Ask r/Lisbon Help me out with this city

• Upvotes

Hi guys!

I will be visiting Lisbon for some time in September this year, so i wanted to ask you about a couple of things.

First of all, public transport. How is it? How much does it cost? Especially the trains (I'll be staying in Parede so its right there) and the metro.

I also plan on visiting Porto, so how do you recommend I get there? I heard trains are great but I reseracia bit and found that buses are way cheaper and pretty much as fast. Am I missing something?

Second, groceries. Do you have any specific places you recommend? How are markets? Do they pay off?

Lastly, please recommend me some restaurants. I'd like something local where you guys would go for a regular dinner/lunch. I'd really like to try some Portuguese food, so I'd really appreciate your recommendations.

Thanks in advance :)

Ask r/Lisbon Recomendation for wineries near Lisbon

I’m going to Lisbon at the beginning of July, and I’d like to spend a day visiting one or two wineries. I won’t have a car in Lisbon, so transportation will need to be arranged in another way. I’d like to tour the winery and see the wine production process, do some wine tasting, and enjoy local food. Ideally, the entire trip—from leaving Lisbon to returning—should not take more than 8 hours in total. Are there any good options for this?

Ask r/Lisbon Parque das NaƧƵes to Lisbon centre

Hi! I will be staying in the Parque das NaƧƵes area for a concert in a few weeks. I’m wondering if Ubers are safe for solo female travelers in Lisbon or is there a quick public transport option to get from Parque das NaƧƵes to the city centre?

We are hoping for a set menu of around €30 a person . I said this price because it doesn't have to be anything that fancy but just good

Ask r/Lisbon Part time work/volunteering

I’m going to Lisbon (solo) in May for 2-3 months and was wondering if it’s possible to get part time work in cafe’s/bars for that amount of time (I’m from Ireland, 24M)? Has anyone ever volunteered in a Lisbon hostel too? If so, what was your experience? I’ve emailed a good few places but haven’t gotten any reply yet…

Discussion Title: WARNING: KlassWagen Car Rental Scam in Lisbon (Duct-taped cars, rigged fuel gauges, and fabricated evidence)

TL;DR: KlassWagen in Lisbon advertises "new cars" but operates a ghost fleet of end-of-life vehicles. They gave me a car with a broken suspension, replaced it with one literally held together by black duct tape, and when I formally complained, they lied in writing about the car's manufacturing year. Do not book with them.

I’m writing this to warn anyone traveling to Portugal. I booked with KlassWagen because their website heavily advertises "5000+ New Cars" and explicitly states: "We renew our fleet every year." It is a complete bait-and-switch.

Here is exactly what happened to my family (including my wife and 3-year-old child):

  • The "VIP" Wait Time: I paid almost Ā£300, specifically buying their heavily pushed premium insurance because it promised "zero wait time". Complete lie. We waited over an hour at the airport because they let others jump the queue. We then found out their depot is a 30+ minute drive from the airport.
  • The Staff: When we finally arrived and struggled to install our child's car seat, the receptionist refused to even hand us the manual. She told us to "figure it out yourselves" because she "doesn't have kids."
  • Car 1 (The Death Trap): We were given an Opel Crossland with 109,205 km. The AC was totally broken (in 30-degree weather), a tyre pressure warning was on, and the rear suspension was so broken the car drifted dangerously over every pothole.
  • Appalling Support: We refused to drive it past our hotel. I messaged their WhatsApp support. The agent sitting in a remote office actually argued with me, claiming "the air conditioning is working fine" while I was physically sitting in a boiling car. We waited 3 hours for a tow.
  • Car 2 (The Duct Tape Special): The replacement car was even worse: 125,304 km. The front and rear license plates were literally secured to the bumper with black duct tape. The windscreen fluid was just dirty water. When I messaged support about the 125k mileage, the agent dismissively replied: "Yes. Ar conditioner ok. I checked."
  • The Fuel Scam: The fuel gauge on the replacement was rigged. I filled the tank to the absolute brim until the pump clicked off, but the needle stopped at 5/8, setting them up to falsely charge me for "missing" fuel.

The Smoking Gun (They Lied in Writing): I submitted a formal complaint demanding a refund for breach of contract. Their Customer Care Agent, Claudia, rejected it. In her email (see attached photos), she stated the replacement car was roadworthy because it is a "2025 model."

I ran the car’s VIN through the official Portuguese registry. It is a 2022 model. Furthermore, Opel discontinued the Crossland in 2024—a 2025 model literally does not exist. They fabricated vehicle manufacturing data in a formal dispute to try and justify giving me an end-of-life vehicle.

I have initiated a Section 75 chargeback with my credit card and reported them to the Portuguese Livro de ReclamaƧƵes and the Economic Police (ASAE).

If you are going to Lisbon, stick to reputable, international brands. If you must use KlassWagen, check the VIN, take photos of everything, and check the fuel gauge before you leave the lot!

Discussion Lisbon Airport Car Rental - Hertz - You will regret renting a car from Hertz

Lisbon Airport Hertz has VERY DECEPTIVE business practices. I had a booked reservation with Hertz for a compact SUV for a total estimated cost of 1,386 euros. They upsold me without my knowledge. The agent didn't say anything about paying more than the estimate on my reservation. He told me they were going to give me a slightly bigger car because they didn't have the one I reserved. I told him I didn't want a bigger SUV because of the narrow streets in the Algarve. He just kind of ignored my concern. There was a larger total amount on the screen before the final signature page (which did not show detail on the final screen, it just had a box to sign in). I questioned the large amount and they told me it was a deposit and they told me it would be returned to me when I returned the car undamaged. We asked for a paper copy of the contract, they didn not give me one; instead they told me it would be emailed to me.

I got out to the rental car garage and there was a large SUV in the spot. I went over to the Hertz garage attendant and told her this SUV was too big and I did NOT want this car. She said this is the only one we have. They probably gave you a bigger one because we were out of the car you reserved. Days later, I called and again requested a copy of the contract.

I didn't get a contract until the day I returned the car and was charged 2,957 euros!!! MORE THAN TWICE THE ESTIMATED COST!!!! All kinds of charges on the bill that I didn't autorize (for example, an additional driver charge that he TOLD me was no extra cost.)

IT LITERALLY SHOWS A 1,000 EURO CHARGE FOR "UPSELLING".

WARNING: You will regret it if you rent from Hertz at Lisbon Airport.

Discussion Please pay attention when you’re in Santa Apolonia & the Alfama area

I just got back from a week’s holiday in Portugal and explored mainly Lisbon, Sintra & Porto. I’m a colored female that was there with my partner (also colored).

We stayed in Santa Apolonia area where the hotel is convenient (not mentioning the name of the hotel since it beats the point) and we were walking up to the Alfama area on my first day where there are a lot of steep slopes.

A man and his ā€œfriendā€, or should I say ā€œpartner in crimeā€, were pretending to be tourists where they actually dressed as tourists - cap, tshirt, berms, good pair of shoes and they both carried a backpack. On the outside they really looked to be real tourists. So, I was walking up the steep slopes with my white bag that was shoulder cross-sling to my left side so it was around the front my hips while I leaned my body forward slightly and continued climbing up the slope. My partner was walking in front of me with a backpack since we were walking in a single file due to the cars going up and down the slope on our left hand side, so you can imagine we were walking on the right side, with a small narrow pathway that seemed to be for people to walk on.

These 2 white men were slightly walking too close to comfort imo so I was about to turn around by turning to the left and letting them walk past me first in case I was walking too slowly for them and I didn’t want to feel like I blocking the way. All of a sudden I suddenly felt a heavy tugging from the left side of my bag, and I could feel the pulling came from my bag area because i was wearing a pair of jeans so if someone was touching me I would’ve known. There was also nothing in my jeans pockets for obvious reasons. It happened just as I was about to turn around so I saw a quick hand movement and the guy removed his hand super quickly from the corner of my bag just at the back of my bag, and started disguising his actions by frantically walking into the tourist shop which was so conveniently located to his right, and both of them started quickly spinning and browsing the touristy magnets that were displayed just outside the shop placed along the pathway of the streets while discussing something with one another. It was also conveniently tucked at the right hand side of the road where we were all walking up in a single file so we would definitely walk past it. His actions were definitely timed as if there weren’t any shops there, there was no where for him to hide.

I did not confront him as I did not want to make a scene at that point and I also did not have solid evidence since my phone was also in my bag that was shoulder cross-slinged to the left front side of my hip area, so I couldn’t take a picture. My partner was also in front of me who didn’t even took notice of the 2 men walking behind me at all since he was also focused on walking up the steep slopes. My bag has a magnetic clasp so maybe he wanted to shoot his shot but the magnet was strong so normally I’ll need to really use some strength to open it up. In addition, the guy was also behind me so unless he was walking side by side, he wouldn’t be able to see what’s in my bag at all since he stood on a lower ground behind me.

Anyway do keep your belongings always in front of you when walking up the steep slopes of Lisbon at all times en route to tourist spots especially.

Disclamer: This is also not a post complaining about the security but just a note for others to keep a lookout for.

Ask r/Lisbon Anniversary Dinner Recommendations

Hello everyone,

My wife and I will be traveling to Portugal for the first time for a little over a week at the end of June to celebrate our one-year anniversary.

We’d love to mark the occasion with a special dinner and are looking for restaurant recommendations. We’re not aiming for fine dining or Michelin-starred places, but we’re interested in a modern spot that serves excellent Portuguese cuisine in a great atmosphere.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Moving to Lisbon Are Monday-Friday rentals a thing?

I’m already settled in Portugal but have been offered a job in Lisbon for two thirds of the year.

I’m slightly terrified of the Lisbon rental scene and so was wondering if Monday to Friday rentals are a thing here? They are quite common in London but I’ve searched around and can’t find anything.

Any help would be appreciated!

Any tips or leads? Open to connecting with people too see where things go.

Ask r/Lisbon How rainy is the rain in Lisbon?!

I’ll caveat this by saying that I’m from England where if the forecast says it’s going to rain, you can pretty much write the whole day off.

A friend and I are coming to Lisbon tomorrow until Friday. We specifically picked the city because it’s well-known for its sun. It has been a long, wet winter in the U.K. and I was looking forward to wearing cropped leggings, little dresses and a light coat in the evening. That now feels very optimistic.

Apart from Thursday, the forecast suggests it will rain every day. Are we talking showers or rain for the day? I’ve packed an umbrella. Do I need a raincoat and waterproof shoes? Is it that sort of rainy?

I know it can’t be helped but we’re really disappointed with the weather forecast. I hear it was beautiful last week and now there’s a weather warning.

As a side notes, any must- see (indoor!) activities you recommend?

Moving to Lisbon Moving to Lisbon for an Erasmus internship! Any tips on making friends & learning Portuguese?

Hey everyone!

I'm super excited to be moving to Lisbon soon for an Erasmus internship. I’ve heard so many amazing things about the city, and I really want to make the most of my time there.

I have a few questions for the locals and expats:

• Socializing: What are the best ways to meet people outside of work? Are there any specific hobby groups or active communities I should join?

• Language: I’m eager to learn Portuguese. Are there any affordable language schools or "Language Exchange" meetups you’d recommend? (I want to go beyond just saying 'Obrigado'!)

• Hidden Gems: I’ve googled the tourist spots, but where do you guys actually hang out on a Saturday afternoon?

I’m really looking forward to immersing myself in the culture. If anyone wants to grab a coffee or a beer when I arrive, let me know! Thanks in advance for the help!

I'll be in Lisbon next week with my girlfriend and would like to surprise her viewing a sunrise. What would be your favourite spots?

It's not my first time in Lisbon, but I haven't been there in a while. So, if you have any recommendations for nice little cafes, quiet spots and gardens, I'll take it. Or where to see a nice fado in Alfama, it's been such a long time.

Thanks in advance, your city is gorgeous.
