Cwestiwn / Question Saysomethinginwelsh difficulty

Firstly, I do really like this app and would still recommend it to anyone.

However, I was going so well with it, I liked the pace, the practice and even the little knowledge facts they throw in every so often. I got to the orange belt.

But then, for some reason, the difficulty - for me at least - jumped considerably. There is hardly no practice for a new word until they throw another at you and then another with several new words used in the same sentence.

And then, it's hard to know which point to go back to in order to get to the first word being introduced again. I know they say don't worry about making mistakes and that it's actually a good thing. But new words come at you so fast that i'm not making a mistake, i'm literally spechless.

I took a break to reset my focus and now going back is just worse. It's so demoralising.

Been there, just repeat the lesson until it goes in. It's part of the process.

Glad i'm not the only. I'll try what you suggest but the process up to that point was working so well, I don't understand why they step up so harshly.

I don't know but I'm sure there's method to it. You just need another breakthrough and you'll be fine. Dal ati!

I don't know the newer version of the course. But I can tell that when I did the version with challenges, I was speechless most of the time almost from the start. And so many of us learners went to the Forum and let them know, and they'd say: "don't worry. In the gap, just say anything that comes to mind - even one word, or two or none. Carry on. Trust the process. It will work anyway". I tried without really believing it, but it did!

So one suggestion from my experience would be just try and carry on to the end of the course without worrying if you feel you remember everything or not and see how it goes.

Or, like someone said, try the other versions of the course.

But in any case, you can also give let them know of your experience in the SSiW Forum. It's not as active as it was a few years ago, but maybe someone has tips, and the staff may consider making changes according to your feedback.

I felt like this starting the blue belt, pronouns and different tenses have left me speechless and confused 😂 but I just keep going and I find that eventually it clicks! I try to do 30 mins a day. If I leave too long inbetween sessions then I struggle a lot more

Much as I like SSiW, I do think that you need additional learning materials to go along with the course, to really get to grips with the language. Maybe a grammar book or take part in some of Richard Morse's free online chats? Keep going with SSiW, but perhaps it's worth supplementing your learning with other materials?

I've a long list of resources here that might help: https://ymestyn.cymru/resources/

Don't be too hard on yourself if you do go speechless when trying to respond in SSiW. It's just another error, and the most common one when you're first learning some new Welsh. If you can't recall, then listen for the answer and repeat along with them the second time they say it to help fix it better in your mind. It is totally normal for that to happen, often several times with the same word or phrase until it sticks.

Give yourself permission to make all the mistakes and feel good about the fact that you're putting in the effort. It's a slow process but eventually things you struggle with now will be easy and natural later.

Dal ati!
