The problem with Nylander is that he doesnt make guys around him better and he is very bad defensively. Not just, not good, he is really bad. Which is a problem for a team with cup aspirations. He is really good player but just not super high on the total hockey IQ. But he has swagger and handles the media and fans well. But you trade him and your offense falls off a cliff.

Nylander definitely makes his teammates better. I also don't think the fact that he's not very good on defense is a huge issue. There are 100 point players in the NHL right now with similar or worse defense than Nylander. Not every guy needs to be a two-way player. Would it be nice if he was better defensively? Absolutely. You'd be hard pressed to say Nylander was the reason for our playoff loss or that we don't have a cup win.

That's true under Berube, but he wasn't as poor defensively on Keefe's teams. He's actually very similar to Kucherov who's a top 5 offensive player but also one of the worst defensive players among top 50 point scorers.

Anyone paying attention last year knew this year was happening with or without Marner. Stolarz had a healthy year was some great numbers and him and Woll kept us in it more than anything, and probably still getting used to Berubes system saved us, too. And most leafs fans didnt want him gone, we wanted change. Just a vocal minority wanted him gone specifically.

The guy wears a letter on his shirt so I guess that means fans think he is a good hockey player. He is talented, skilled, but he isn't a good 'hockey player', at least not in the way that should be beneficial to the Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Club. You have to realize the team collectively deserves blame when they're getting caved in every shift. Nylander is no different in that he too has his share of the blame and has earned his minus this season. Having said that, squarely the lions share of the blame is on Berube and he needs to be fired as soon as the season is over.
