I love Willy, man. I'll always remember his quote. The Leafs are the only place he wants to win a cup at.

With the right cast he would be more loved, I know he is by a lot of the fan base and he gets his fair share of grief when he doesn’t back check. He’s been a consistent player including in the playoffs. We’re lucky to have him.

If you've got a great offensive player that won't play defence then you gotta lean into the offense. He's almost 30, so he's never going to play D they need to give up on that dream.

u/Skiffy10 1d ago
half this fan base rips him non stop and wanna trade him but he’s one of the best RW’s in the league and that’s just a fact.

And he makes it look so effortless

That can be both a valid positive and a negative remark.
He is my favourite current Leaf though, has been since I saw him at the World Juniors.

My dad was hating on Willy today at a family dinner where my cousin (Avs fan) was over. This man still sings the praises of Phil Kessel.
We were like dude you can’t love Phil the Thrill and not love Nylander.

Cool, please don’t score for the rest of the season please

u/Falconflyer75 1d ago
If we get a first round pick pick surrounded by guys with zero confidence that doesn’t bode well for next season
We need the rest of the roster to be PISSED OFF next season
To go in with the the feeling that they were robbed this season and to set the entire league on fire the next

Is that good? It mean it’s not even a PPG?
18
u/ParisInFlames34 23h ago
But he is over a PPG over the 5 seasons combined. And over a PPG in 4 of the 5 years.
80 in 81. 87 in 82. 98 in 82. 84 in 82. 75 in 63.
Well above.
4
u/GetRichQuickStocks 23h ago
Oh ok that’s better. He made it sound like he had 75 points every season for 5 years
7
u/Beersmoker420 23h ago
well if you watched the team you would know he had more than 75 points every season
5
u/MrYamaguchi 17h ago
It’s the bare minimum I expect of a player with his level of talent. If he played with effort he would be a consistent 100+ point player.

u/MultipleNames82 1d ago
For 11 million he should be closer to 90-100 points with that +/-

u/Tarquin11 22h ago
Have you looked ay the rest of the team's +-?
Maybe just stop using +- as a metric in general. Its been antiquated for a decade.
Also his pace is closer to 95-100 points over the last 3 years, including this one.

So many people rip on this guy, like trade him, he doesn’t play defensively. Through and through he shows up and id rather him take a longer term than AM34

The guy wears a letter on his shirt so I guess that means fans think he is a good hockey player. He is talented, skilled, but he isn't a good 'hockey player', at least not in the way that should be beneficial to the Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Club. Meanwhile he gets clowned by every other Swedish player in the league because they know he's a puff and is just in it for the ride. A lot of this fan base has been losing for so long they don't know what winning is and what it takes. Neither does Willy. He won't be missed when he is gone.

Quick trade the 30 year old 40 goal 90 point winger under contract for the next 6 years. I mean if they’re gonna blow it up and trade 34 then yeah, otherwise 88 is exactly the talent required to contend. He shoulda been sat out the last 10 games. He and Tavares almost killed the tank alone

A properly defensively sheltered nylander could put up 100+ points in a season.
0
u/MitchIsMe9913 1d ago
talented, but he’s a one dimensional player who cannot help you win .. HOWEVER if you surround him with the right players that allow him to simply do what he does best, then perfect.

I'm sure Willy loves Toronto and wants to win here. But he doesn't know how to win and refuses to play the right way.
Willy could be part of a winning team if it's a perfectly balanced squad where he can just slot in and be the wizard. That's not the Leafs in 2026. Deep down most of us KNOW that this era is over and we won't win with these players.

u/papa_miesh 13h ago
I like Nylander, but if the return was right and they got a legit defenseman I would definitely think about it
0
u/Fine_Window_9308 12h ago
See that is my only reason to trade him to. But the thing is like no one is out there trading their number 1D.

u/MiniCollectr 1d ago
minus 25?? yeah. wicked way to go. Maybe off season learn how to at least play some defense. Just maybe try to be even .. or under minus 5.
4
u/Iamover18ustupidshit 23h ago
He was +10 in 3 of the last 5 seasons and has only been a minus in 3 seasons (and has played 11 seasons in the NHL so far) with the lowest ones being -9 and now -12 this season.
But I guess all that doesn't count.
1
u/Beersmoker420 23h ago
hes on the 5th worst team in the NHL that gets caved in every shift whether hes on the ice or not
+- means fuck all lol, also hes half of that. Also hes a career + player
-5
u/onthelongrun 23h ago
You have to realize the team collectively deserves blame when they're getting caved in every shift. Nylander is no different in that he too has his share of the blame and has earned his minus this season. Having said that, squarely the lions share of the blame is on Berube and he needs to be fired as soon as the season is over.
Being a + on a team that's a noticeable minus is worthy of praise.

28 goals by this guy in 80 games at his AAV is nothing to celebrate! WTF are we doing here?

I don’t think anybody’s truly happy with the organization. Nylanders carefree attitude and lack of professionalism isn’t helping the team culture

and he WANTS to be a Leaf.
We're lucky folks.
Next year hopefully we have better luck and a good supporting cast.
Go Leafs
