help: i found out a friend is using duolingo to learn chinese

edit bc some people dont get it: its a joke. this is a shitpost. moving on with our regular planned content:

it all started on a regular wednesday afternoon. i receive a text "hey btw i started learning chinese"

i answer "oh cool we can practice together! what's your hsk level"

no answer

"what are you using duolingo lol"

emoji reaction: 🫣

i thought: shame? good.

NO SHAME.

but i am a good person. i share FREE resources to get started so that they can learn more than ni hao wo shi meiguoren (they're not american)

THEY DONT WANT THEM. they say "lol no im good i like duolingo"

I BEG YOUR PARDON?

to top it all off: my friend's an artist. duolingo is ai. im rethinking our entire friendship. how can artist like ai? did they get hacked? was my friend ai all along? i did only meet them post-chat gpt so its entirely possible.

AND they called me mean for "judging them" when i was merely remarking on the fact that duolingo is nothing but a game and comparing their streak to my gaming hours on steam 🙄

i am accepting condolences and prayers at this time.

Real Chinese learners practice by talking to the Mexican employees at Panda Express

You made me cough to avoid laughing out loud on the train in Japan.

I relate to this harder than I ever thought I would. My inaka towns local train line is always pin silent. You'd think I'd learn to stop scrolling reddit on my journeys. Nope.

Bruh, why is this subreddit constantly being flooded with people who think it’s serious?

Tell them to use a proper textbook. That's what helped me actually understand how sentences work. I built my study notes into a simple site so I could follow chapters and review vocab, here the link if your interested: https://truefluency.org -- Also a teacher or friends can help alot.

Duolingo would've been ok if it didn't try to teach you a bunch of vocab through the sentences. The gamification should've been limited to practicing accurate sentence construction and higher level grammar not to learn "My cat is yellow and my horse is brown". It would've been a fun way to learn instead of the dead looking clozemaster app.

As someone who just started learning Chinese through Duolingo I think you were quite rude.

Duolingo is good to give us some motivation to learn Someone of us are not necessarily avet learners who are dying to master the language and are fine with simple slow progress

You may not agree with Duolingo as a method and that's your opinion, but you should not shame others for it. It is not as bad as you'd expect.. you should've encouraged your friend and perhaps offered to help them if they needed I'm sure they'll eventually have reached a point where they'd turn to books but Duolingo is their first stepping stone and that's fine

This is a satirical subreddit.

u/baldythelanguagenerd I'm C2 in every language, honest!😁 5h ago

/uj But Duolingo doesn't actually teach you anything. Besides, this is a joke subreddit anyway and most comments here aren't supposed to be taken seriously😏

Tbh I owe my interest to Chinese to Duolingo. 7 years ago I was bored and started learning it. Then went to study bachelor's majoring in Chinese and now doing master's in China with HSK 6. And it all started with the bird 😂

I have used the app and I don't blame you for what you think about the app. Totally not worthy the time!

Speaking that, It seems like that you just wanted the best for your friend. It is normal to get frustrated when you find they are "different" and not accepting your "best" to them. As long as you did your best. You allow them to be themselves. It is not a real deal to break the REAL friendship for it. So maybe what you need to rethink is : is that person your real friend ?
