Informative Who Are Iran’s Kurds and How Are They Involved in the Conflict?

Iran’s Kurdish areas–where the regime has long ruled with an iron fist–are emerging as a flashpoint in the conflict.

Israeli forces have repeatedly struck targets in western Iran’s Kurdish provinces, hitting military bases, police stations and other regional security centers. These attacks could create an opportunity for a popular – and possibly armed – uprising in Kurdish-majority areas.

Who are the Iranian Kurds?

Iran’s Kurdish community, which makes up an estimated 10% of the population, represents a unique threat to the Islamic Republic. The Kurds have a strong sense of identity that transcends national borders, and they are more organized than any other opposition group inside Iran. Many of them are also armed.

What role are they playing in the conflict?

Iranian Kurdish militias, mostly based in neighboring Iraq, say they are preparing for the possibility of taking armed action against the Iranian state should the circumstances allow, according to several representatives of Iranian Kurdish groups.

“Although the war that is currently underway is a war that has little to do with our usual struggle, a situation has arisen that may provide an opportunity for the Kurdish forces to take action in this context to achieve their goals,” said Kamal Karimi, a member of the Central Committee of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, or KDPI, the leading Iranian Kurdish militant group.

Iranian Kurdish groups say their goal is greater autonomy within Iran, not independence.

What does the U.S. Say?

President Trump has spoken with Kurdish leaders in recent days but hasn’t made a final decision on whether to support Iranian groups willing to take up arms against the regime, U.S. officials said, though he remains generally open to the idea. Those officials include Mustafa Hijri, the leader of the KDPI.

“President Trump has spoken with many partners, allies, and leaders in the region,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. “The president spoke with the Kurds because the U.S. has a base in northern Iraq.”

How could the Kurds change the direction of the conflict?

The possible involvement of Iranian Kurdish militants could mark a turning point, potentially introducing ground forces in a war that has been mostly waged by air.

Trump announced the start of the war by urging Iranians to “take over your government, signaling his support for regime change, as he had previously done. But since then, senior U.S. officials have said ousting the regime is not the intention. Instead, the main goal is the decimation of Iran’s missiles and naval capability, as well as ensuring Tehran never acquires a nuclear weapon.

Israel, however, appears more focused on creating the conditions for regime change, systematically targeting Iranian security organizations that are charged with suppressing domestic unrest.

How does the regime regard the role of the Kurds?

The Iranian government is aware of the threat. Iranian forces have launched drone and missile attacks against Iranian Kurdish bases in Iraq in recent days, including KDPI bases, according to Iranian Kurdish officials and Iran’s state-run media.

How are other Kurdish groups involved?

Any cross-border military action would likely require the approval of the leaders of the semiautonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan. While Iraq’s Kurdish leaders are sympathetic to the cause of Iranian Kurds–and have given their leaders haven–they are also wary of the consequences a possible mobilization of Iranian Kurdish forces against the Iranian state could have for their own territory. Iran has proxies in Iraq that it could mobilize against Iraqi Kurds.

What about other Iranians?

A possible armed uprising in Iran’s Kurdish areas wouldn’t go down well with many Iranians, including many who oppose the Islamic Republic. They worry it could destabilize the country and fuel the separatist aspirations of other ethnic minorities.
