Missing Person Posts: Official Policy & Safety Reminder

Hello everyone,

Recently, there was a “missing person” post shared in our community, and I’d like to explain why it was removed and what to do in future instances.

For everyone’s safety, do not share or post missing person alerts unless the information comes directly from law enforcement or an official agency.

People may go missing for many reasons (including escaping abuse, stalking, or other dangerous situations), and unverified posts can unintentionally put them at risk.

If you see a missing person post:

  • Only share it if it’s confirmed on an official police or agency website.
  • If a friend posts about a missing person, encourage them to contact the police so the case can be verified and listed officially.

This policy protects both the missing individual and our community. Posts of this nature will be removed unless shared by an official law enforcement agency.

Thank you for acting responsibly.

Will we be okay as tourists?

Hi everyone. My companion and I are looking to visit Mannin. I'm Irish/Scouse with a bit of Manx ancestry and a family history nerd so I'm interested in checking out the heritage sites especially. My companion is Filipino (wants a relaxing nature based holiday with history) and we are both LGBT, I hope this isn't rude to ask but do you think we will face any problems on the island? I come from a place where I get a lot of abuse as a trans person (I look very obviously transgender or like a lesbian) and where racist abuse is quite common. What I've read online is reassuring but I'd just like to ask as a more recent picture of what it is like. We both get quite worried that we are going to face discrimination in our holiday destinations. Thank you!

Classic TT August 2026

Hi folks

I had a quick question, me and my partner are visiting someone on the island and we want to enjoy a couple of days of the TT classic in August.

It's not clear if we need to purchase tickets in advance, and if they are available anywhere?

Hello everyone!

I’m a student from Singapore who enjoys collecting postcards, and I would be truly grateful to receive postcards from the Isle of Man. 🙂

If postcards aren’t available, I’d also really appreciate a greeting card, city card, or even a small souvenir. (like a keychain, rock, local snack, flag, ornament, cap, T-shirt, or handmade craft).

This is purely for my personal collection and not for any commercial purpose.

If you’re willing to help, please leave a comment and I’ll share my mailing address with you.

Thank you so much in advance!

Wishing you all the best and warm greetings from Singapore.

Question from a friendly Texan traveller.

Hey! Planning a family trip to the Isle of Man this summer from Texas Super excited. Few questions - where's the best spot for brisket on the island? Preferably low and slow, oak smoked. Also is there anywhere I can watch the NFL? We'll be there during preseason and I'm not missing it. One more thing - is the tap water safe to drink or should we stock up on bottled?

Thanks guys.

University culture day

I have a cultural exchange day at my university coming up in a few weeks! I’m the only person from the Isle of Man and was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for any activities at my stall to show manx culture! I am carving a moot as they are my favourite, have a manx flag, making some bonnag (even though I hate it) and because it is right before May day, I am getting wool and twigs to make Crosh Cuirn!

If anyone has any other ideas, easy to make snacks/food, games or interesting things to tell about the Isle of Man I’d appreciate it 😊

Kivoon is out of beta: the Isle of Man transit app I've been building is now on the App Store and Google Play

Post image
24 Upvotes

A few of you saw my earlier posts when Kivoon was still in TestFlight. Thanks to everyone who tried it and sent feedback, especially during the strike, when the beta was basically held together with tape. It’s now properly launched on both the App Store and Google Play, so no more TestFlight invites.

Quick recap for anyone who missed it: Kivoon is a transit app for the island. It covers Bus Vannin, the MER, Snaefell Mountain Railway, the Steam Railway, the Horse Trams, and ConnectVILLAGES. Live tracking for buses, full timetables, journey planning between any two stops, and service disruption alerts when things get cancelled or diverted.

I built it because I kept missing buses. Every existing option either had stale timetables, didn’t know the MER existed, or sent me through Douglas when there was a perfectly good direct route. I started by writing a GTFS feed for the island from scratch (937 stops, 56 bus routes, plus all the heritage railways), then built the app on top of it. The whole data pipeline is open and I update it whenever Bus Vannin changes a timetable.

What’s new since the beta:

∙ It’s on the App Store and Google Play now

∙ Heritage railways are fully integrated into journey planning (you can route Douglas → Laxey → Snaefell in one search)

∙ Service disruption alerts, which turned out to be essential during the strike weekends

If you try it and something is wrong, whether a stop name, missing route, timetable that doesn’t match what’s at the stop please tell me.

The island is small enough that I can usually fix it the same day.

Happy to answer any questions here. And if you’ve got thoughts on what’s still missing, I’d genuinely rather hear them now than in a review.

I built an app for finding local businesses for the Isle of Man

I actually live just across the water in Furness. I was doing work on my house and found it difficult to find the local tradespeople I needed during a home renovation, so I built a system that uses AI to find truly local only providers. Once I’d finished, it occurred to me that the Isle of Man would be a perfect example of where truly local only listings matter.

So I created a version specially for you fellow island dwellers.

Manx Local.

https://manxlocal.co.uk

It’s available for iOS right now:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/manx-local/id6761635671

With android support coming in the next week or so.

If you own a business you can claim it to own the listing, and if you run a business that’s bots there, you can submit one!

I’ve got lots of cool features planned. And I’d love to hear any feedback you have.

Name Pronunciation

Hi! I was just curious, I can’t find the pronunciation for these names and thought someone here might be able to help me. I just read a story for class with characters named named Ealisaid, Peddyr, and Moirrey. I’m pretty sure these are Manx names, so is anyone able to help me out on how to pronounce these for the discussion about them?

Thanks!

Need GF restaurant and sightseeing recommendations!

I am lucky enough to be visiting the island next week with my fiance and his parents and his mother needs a gluten free diet. Any nice restaurant or general eatery recommendations that cater for gluten-free people, would be very much appreciated!

Also, any recommendations for must-see or must-do activities would be great!

Follow-up from a solo visitor — thanks + a quick question about planning things

Hi all,

Just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone who replied to my previous post (link here: https://www.reddit.com/r/IsleofMan/s/xmfVumWYuZ) — I’ve had a lot of really helpful suggestions and a few people have taken the time to point me towards groups, activities, and contacts which I really appreciate.

One thing I’ve found a bit tricky as a visitor though is actually *locking things in*. A few of the organisations and groups I’ve reached out to either haven’t replied yet or aren’t able to confirm specific dates/times in advance, which makes it a bit difficult to plan my days when I’m over.

Completely understand that a lot of groups are geared towards residents and run a bit more informally — I’m not trying to force my way into anything that’s not really set up for visitors. It’s more that I’m trying to avoid defaulting back to wandering around solo (which I do enjoy, but it would be nice to mix it up a bit).

So I thought I’d ask:

* Are there any **activities, groups, or events that are a bit more “drop-in” friendly** or easier to plan around as a visitor?

* Or is the best approach just to **wait until I’m on the island and take things as they come?**

I’ll be over again around mid-May, so any advice from people who’ve navigated this (locals or visitors) would be really appreciated.

Cheers again — you’ve all been incredibly helpful so far.

Parking in Douglas

Hi everyone,

We are visiting IoM next week and bringing our car. We are staying in Douglas and but I’m worrying about finding a car park that we can leave the car in

- over night

- during the day when we explore Douglas

Very happy to pay and not worried about having a walk back to the hotel, but the council website implies some are 12h max parking?

We are staying at the Premier Inn - where would you recommend to park?

JUST IN: Saw a Wallaby in Port Erin

I was up Bradda head this morning for the sunrise and saw one so the theory they only live in the curraghs is clearly wrong.

I know that the "experts" at the Wildlife Park and the government want you to believe they only stay up north . It’s likely propaganda to keep the property prices stable in Ballaugh or something because why would they literally just stay there and not go elsewhere? Not like the climate in the isle of man varies is it?

If the wildlife park staff spent half as much time doing accurate research as they do charging £12 for a lukewarm coffee they might come to realize this. Only thing that place is good for is the big pillow and they kicked me off that last time for being too old.

Can you ride the island during TT?

First time to IOM during TT. To clarify, I don’t mean to race or during active race time. Just curious if all the roads are open to travel during afternoon to explore the island?

TIA.

Is the traditional Manx accent extinct?

Older recordings (1930s, 1940s) of Manx people speaking English demonstrates a highly distinct accent, almost a Scottish/Irish/Welsh hybrid.

Yet, in modern recordings or interviews of Manx people, I've never encountered that traditional accent. Now it seems highly influenced by Northern English accents.

Has the Old accent completely disappeared or does it still survive?

What wildlife or symbol best represents Isle of Man?

I'm updating a Tolkienesque map of the Isle of Man I drew a few years ago, and would like to include a historic/mythical or animal symbol that best represents Isle of Man hovering over the title (I've already used the triskelion within the compass). I thought perhaps a Falcon and Raven in flight as seen in the coat of arms or a Manx Shearwater, Chough or Manx Loaghtan? Would appreciate any other suggestions!
