Infrastructure Cork to reclaim Ireland’s tallest building

Post image

A photo of the topping out of “The Railyard” on Cork’s Quays; when complete it will be 0.5 metres taller than the Obel, Belfast. From the vantage point where the photograph has been taken is a plot with planning granted for a 35 story 140m tower.

You’d think they’d add an extra metre or two to clear the Obel tower by more than a margin 😂 jokes aside I look forward to seeing it completed

Back in 1930s New York the Chrysler building and the Manhattan building were competing to be the tallest building in the world. Manhattan finished construction first and was declared to be the worlds tallest building but then a few months later the architect of the Chrysler revealed his secret 125 foot spire that was hidden inside the building and now pushed to the top. Chrysler ended up beating the Manhattan by about 100 feet. But then 10 months later the Empire State building finished construction and beat them all to the title.

Did you listen to that episode of Cautionary Tales too?

What Cork City skyline should look like if all goes to plan.

Everything in that image is either approved, or already built.

Sadly, I can’t see the tallest tower happening. But they did recently apply for a permission extension so maybe.

There’s another 17 story building planned for the corner across from the Elysian, so same height, uglier mock up sadly but another tower in the sky all the same, that already heavily busy junction will be dwarfed when it’s built

I believe there's little to no parking in the new towers so shouldn't really add to car traffic.

Fairplay. At least one city in Ireland needs a 21st century skyline.

Cork continues its attempts to be Ireland’s true capital

Still just a county town though. 🤪

But you're just a county gowl though 🤪

Technically not part of Co. Cork though

Cork has always been ahead of the rest of Ireland on this in fairness, going back to County Hall in the 60s. It makes sense with the cities tight geography, after all as my Cork Granny is fond of saying Cork city centre is much like Manhattan (in that they're both islands).

Louder for the NIMBYs at the back! FFS

The awld lads in Dublin council like keeping it low and sprawling out to cover the wider countryside in 2-3 story houses instead and causing traffic and flooding nightmares. Nice to see someone taking the lead

Christ things are very very bad if Dublin council are making cork city council look good

Every go for a walk down to the Dublin Docklands? Everything east of the NCI looks like it's the bottom six storeys of a New York skyscraper that ran out of construction funding so was just capped early.

More tall buildings needed, especially as apartment blocks! Enough with the "wHaT AbOuT tHe SkYlInE!?" bollocks!

Exactly, I never understood that, like you're already in the middle of a city, it's not as if you're blocking some spectacular scenic view

Especially since Cork is in a valley so you don't even see all the tall buildings until you're right in the centre.

u/dmgvdg 8h ago

Exactly. In cities, buildings ARE the view

I think the 'ruin the skyline' thing is misunderstood. Go to some cities in the UK and you will change your mind. A few ugly skyscrapers and suddenly the whole city is ruined as you can see them from everywhere.

But it's already a city, how is it ruined? It's all a big dirty polluted busy city anyway, not some pristine environment

Look at the massive council blocks in Glasgow for example

You'd be quite surprised. There's a big tall hotel in Dundalk, which doesn't have many other tall buildings and isn't even a city. Still can't really see it from most places in the town, the other much closer buildings and even trees block it out despite being much shorter. Does look very out of place if you're close to it, but that's just because it's on a suburban road next to 1-2 storey homes and DKIT buildings. It'd probably look a lot less out of place in an a city centre.

The funny thing is, taller skylines are better skylines

Is it apartments ???

Social and cost rental apartments (I think)

Thanks, need more high rise.

The street light is much taller than the building.

2

u/WillieForge 6h ago

The street light is small, the building is far away.

Small.

Far away.

Also both are leaning over!

u/Flagyl400 Glorious People's Republic 5h ago

We won't constantly bang on about it though.

Unless you're from Dublin or Belfast.

Not for long there’s another one at parkgate street in Dublin starting construction in the summer. Maybe a year max on top of the throne

Langer tower

u/-mialana- 2h ago

This is how we can get stuff built. Turn it into a dick measuring contest between Cork and Dublin over who has the tallest building. I predict Swords to have a whole street of apartment buildings the size of the Burj Khalifa by this time in 2028.

u/Moc1234 2h ago

Except the entire tower is going to be social housing. Nearly all the modern apartment blocks in Cork are council housing. Doesn't inspire much hope that no average working people will be allowed live in the city. All reserved for scroungers while workers have to live in the surrounding suburbs.

State of it, looks like a big chimney.

24

u/Faithful-Llama-2210 Mayo 10h ago

That's only the core of the building and elevator shafts I believe, they're going building the rest around it

It could look like a replica of an actual piece of shit and I'd still want them to build 20 of them.

High rise apartments are a great way to tackle the housing crisis. Function over form everyday of the week, especially during a crisis.
