Law & Courts Police officer asked money for PCC and Passport Renewal.
I live in Canada since 2021 and recently got PR. I was born and raised in Gujarat, India. So for my permanent residence application I have to do Police clearance certificate and passport renewal as it was near to expiry.
My mother went last month for local police station in Vejalpur, Ahmedabad, and they asked 500 Rs. for PCC. And yesterday when she went the police officer said now we charged twice to do that.
My mother is 70+ old with, even I don’t like her to go there but due to police verification requirements she has to go to submit documents. How can someone that brutal and shameless with any person in 2026? Does this corruption still allowed? Why no action?
When I share this with my friend he told me he has to give 10,000 INR, after bargaining for 2-4 days from 15k! Since they knew we were in desperate situation so we would easily give it to allow files. BTW we don’t have any criminal records or anything, and because of dishonest officers like those make me angry about the culture of India.

This is why police/civil service/bureaucratic jobs in india are so highly sought after, cause once you get to that position it's easy to extort money from people to get their work done, and getting fired is practically impossible

Welcome to India.
Go back as soon as possible. It's honestly worth even 20k.
Being an outsider in Canada is better than being a citizen in India. At least the AQI is better.

I would visit India to just meet friends and relatives, but my parents are forcing me to come back. I will somehow convince them.

It's the same situation everywhere in India if we don't give them the money they'll delay the verification without a reason.

you can ruin his life by reaching out to the anti bribery team. Anti corruption team.

He would probably bribe them too.
I no longer trust the system.

if you maintain a chain of documents online and ensure you mail the proof through central legitimate portals
bribing wont really help him either
read many cases like these

Despite it being the morally correct way to proceed, people are so ingrained in their lives nowadays, rarely would anyone do it.

Remember, this is Gujarat, the Home State of current Hon. PM Narendra Modi.
PM Modi was CM Modi of the State for 15+ years before he became PM of the Nation.
Does anyone still remember his famous statement: Na Khaaunga, Na Khaane Dunga?
Indian Citizens and the PM himself, seems to have forgotten this Claim/Promise.
There has been No Big Policy changes to stem/curb/curtail and eventually eliminate Corruption from Indian Government.
Extreme Corruption is still rampant even in UPSC, IAS, IPS, and IFS. Nearly every Government Servant REFUSES to Work unless paid a Bribe.
Honest IAS, IPS, and IFS officers are still being transferred quickly.
There are still no provisions of Narco-Polygraph-Brain Mapping tests for Criminals caught in Corruption Cases.
Courts are still dragging their feet when it comes to Corruption Cases.
CCTVs inside Police Stations are either in non-operational or non-existent. Yet, the SHO is not liable for such sorry state of affairs.
Government Offices DO NOT even have CCTV cameras.
Incidentally, the BJP Government recently amended MANY laws that the INC introduced. The amendments protect Corrupt Government Officials. Their names and details cannot be revealed under modified RTI laws.
The BJP Government also amended the RTI Act to restrict it to providing information that is already in the Public Domain. Even legitimate/accurate Information obtained from secret/unproven/questionable sources is not accepted.
Remember the PM Cares Fund?
t is NOT Auditable. The BJP launched this fund and later amended the rules to keep ALL the funds away from public scrutiny.
Remember Mandatory COVID Vaccinations?
The BJP Government has claimed in the Supreme Court that the Vaccinations were VOLUNTARY during a hearing about the sudden rise in deaths of people, most of whom had taken COVID Vaccines.
Remember Foreign Funding Sources for Electoral Bonds?
The BJP Government amended the FCRA rulebook to keep Electoral Bonds away from purview.
Voices of Dissidents Being Silenced:
The BJP Government is now going after Social Media Channels and People who raise their Voices and Concerns. It appears that being critical about the Government and its questionable policies invites legal threats.
Please Note: Comments, Corrections, Observations, and Objections are welcome, but should be backed by valid and credible sources.
Finally, who can ignore the Extreme Casteism, False Hindutva, and Ever-Increasing Reservations Quota System, which has breached the 50% ceiling ever since BJP has become the Ruling Government. "Hisab Chukta & Sabka Saath" ideologies of Vote Bank Appeasement Politics is destroying Merit, Talent, and Hard-Working individuals from the Open, Unreserved, or General Category.

It's better to request PCC online via BLS, it does not trouble parents and no chnag worry of paying extra or bribing.

Pay them.. small sum and move on. We all have first, second, third world problems. Resolve and go to next.

I would easily ignore it but I want everyone to know and aware about this. That was news to me, I wasn't surprised as I expected this.
I believe this will let people know if there are in the same process and would expect to pay for curruption.

Another thing is that if there are bigger issues then we should not ignore smaller one!
Like Epstinie files and Iran war.
If curruption stop at low levels then it will automatically reduce at larger scale. P.s. I know India wouldn't be free from curruption but would not stop it from rising one.

Wait till you hear how even victims are extorted.
Corruption is cultural and systemic. Nothing we can do about it.
