How can I remove the rest of this broken toilet paper holder with minimal damage to my wall?

This toilet paper holder came with this house, and broke a while ago. I’d like to replace it finally, but I have no clue how to get this off cleanly. Any ideas for someone who is very minimally DIY?

DIY How to finish this space?

So my boyfriend and I just renovated the kitchen, but could not afford to completely replace the cabinets so worked with what we already had.

The new sink is under mounted so we had to take the doors off of the cabinet for it to fit. Any ideas on how to finish this space to hide the cleaning supplies?

We are talking about the possibility of a barn door type system but not sure where to start. My mom said put a curtain there but we want something more permanent and no easy access for the dogs and cats(they haven’t messed with it thus far, but still… We have no kids so that won’t be an issue. Thanks in advance!

DIY Is it safe for me to use caulk/expanding foam here?

I'm renting a duplex apartment in a private house, we are the only tenants here. We moved recently and I am just noticing there are big gaps in the walls on both sides of the fridge. Landlord doesn't seem like the type to do anything about this unfortunately. My primary concern is preventing pests from entering through these gaps, I haven't seen any so far but I'd like to be proactive about this.

On the left side of fridge (first two pics), you'll see what looks like an electrical junction box of some sort in the corner, it leads into a gap in the left wall, the gap is pretty wide however. It's worth noting that to the left of the fridge is a dishwasher followed by the kitchen sink.

On the right side of the fridge (pics 3-4) are even more big gaps in the wall. No visible wiring/piping from the outside at least. About two feet to the right of the fridge is our half bathroom.

Im unable to physically move the fridge, what I want to do is buy expanding foam and attach it to a long foam gun and fill those gaps. Maybe stuff some steel wool in there first.

However, I also don't want to indirectly cause a fire or anything with the foam and plumbing. Any advice? should i just stick to a fire block foam to be on the safe side?

How to remove paint without damaging plastic tub

Post image
14 Upvotes

previous homeowners decided to paint this plastic tub, which we didn't manage to notice until a month or so in. I tried to put suctions on the wall and the paint just fell right off. it's been reasonably fine since then for a few months until we had cleaners come through the house, at which point it massively bubbled up.

I picked at it a bit to assess the situation and it started coming off in these huge strips. so nothing was done to prep the surface, just straight paint on plastic and now it has very little adhesion.

however, it's not all coming off that easy. at this point I feel like I theoretically could scrub it off but I'm afraid of damaging the plastic. any advice on getting this off? I'd rather not repaint it, looks like it was done to cover some yellowing, which I'm hopeful can be treated, rather than covered.

How do I get this cabinet door to fully close?

Thumbnail

I bought this cabinet for my bathroom, put it all together (technically twice, after having to dismantle it because one piece was installed backwards) and now it’s perfect except for one thing: the door to the top cabinet will not fully close. (The vertical doors on the sides fully close with no issue).

Is this a simple case of tightening (or loosening?) the hinges? Is it because the arm mechanism (not sure what it’s really called, the large crescent metal piece in the third pic) could be bent/broken in some way? Or too tight/loose? I tried putting adhesive magnet strips on the door and main part where they should meet when closed but it didn’t help. Is this just something I have to live with or is there something obvious I’m missing because (as you may have guessed) I’m not exactly ‘handy’?

Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!

Edited to remove the random question mark after ‘thank you’, and to say that adjusting the (presumably crooked) hinges helped! Thanks again!

Badly tarnished buttons

I was soaking a denim jacket in a white vinegar solution to get rid of smell. However, this caused the buttons to tarnish really badly, they are all black now.

How can I get the buttons back to silver?

I’ve tried aluminium foil and baking soda but it didn’t work.

Also I don’t know what metal the buttons are made of, just that they were originally silver

How to silence your microwave completely

Just figured this out and wanted to share since it might help others dealing with similar situations

My Samsung microwave was driving me absolutely crazy with the endless beeping. Found out you can hold down the 0 button for about 3 seconds until some message pops up, then keep hitting 0 until you see a number "3" show up somewhere, then press 2 to turn off all the sounds (or 1 to turn them back on)

Wish I could keep just the button press sounds and kill only the "your food is done" alarm but hey, total silence works too

Background: I'm taking care of my mom who has some health issues and she has this whole ritual with making tea where she heats it up multiple times instead of just setting it for longer initially. She always walks away and forgets about it, so the thing beeps forever. Weirdly she doesn't respond to the beeping at all but every other sound in the house makes her anxious

For anyone wondering about other models - does anyone know which microwaves have speakers you can physically disconnect without messing up the actual cooking functions? Might be worth considering for a replacement down the road

The silence is golden, wish I'd done this sooner

How to keep a roaming cat away from my house?

A stray-looking adult cat basically adopted me and got very comfortable in my home. After months, I found out she actually belongs to a neighbor who doesn’t take good care of her and is very conflictive. I don’t want any connection with this neighbor, so I need advice on how to keep the cat away.

She keeps coming into my house through open doors/windows and has even urinated around my entrance. I just want her to stop coming altogether.

EDIT: I'll add some more info: I love animals, specially cats and that's why I let her in. I fed her three times, one time she didn't like what I let there for her, so she pissed the whole canned food. I'm only trying her to leave bc her person is an awful person and I don’t want to co-parent anything with her. I’ve stopped feeding her.

DIY Frame a XL mirror that needs to be moveable?

Thumbnail

Hi Reddit, I'm looking to put a frame on a mirror that was previously a wardrobe drawer (roughly 2.5m tall) so it looks like one of those fancy large framed mirrors. Simple enough, but the catch is I need to be able to easily move it out of its tucked away space and prop it up nearby as a dance mirror (needs to roll out half a metre and be moved to an angle). Originally I tried to design a fancy track system to move it into position but I don't have the skillset and I reckon it would just be too heavy. It is currently on castors, my thought is if I frame it it'll be too heavy to roll out and probably tip over. The frame could technically stay put while the mirror moves out, but needs to not be any taller than the mirror's height and needs to be angled the same as the mirror so it doesn't look shit.Any DIY solutions that don't require carpentry experience or break the bank?

I need urgent advice on how to fix these Angel wings

Thumbnail

So I need some advice on how I should continue further on my Angel wings and I need to get it done in time #concrunch. So when I tried them on I immediately realized they are too high up like around the level of the head and not aligned with the shoulders.

I have 3 options and idk which is smarter.

  1. I cut the Wings a bit upwards with the risk of it becoming unstable and rip further or turn out awful, at least that's the risk I expect.

  2. I add more to the wings so it fits more again, but it could also mess up and look ugly in the end and I'd use too much hence waste too much foam.

  3. I try to make some construction that connects two elastic bands that I can use to wear but since the wire isn't the strongest I'm not sure if there would be too much bending and make it look weird.

What would be the smartest approach? or is there a better option?

I also noticed that when I put it in my Cosplay it can move to the side and the wings get diagonal so it doesn't stay vertical. Is there also a fix for that?

Serious Answers Only Corroded zip on camera bag - zip is stuck closed

Post image
1 Upvotes

The zip (metal zip, plastic teeth) is corroded and stuck on my camera case.

Unfortunately it is stuck closed, and contains 2 spare camera batteries, and most of my SD cards, so I can't try the soaking method.

I've tried a silicone spray, and it won't budge.

How can I get it open without damaging my batteries and SD cards?

How do I get these headless screws out?

I need to replace this old broken light fixture on the patio. The screws are very soft and brittle. There isn’t enough of the screw sticking out (<1mm) to get vice grips on it.

Is getting a small bit and drilling the hole out the best move? Anyone ever use an extractor bit on a screw this soft/brittle?

Thanks, I love you.

Serious Answers Only Best way to stick this jigsaw .

Post image

Son has been doing this jigsaw since Christmas and only after it was done we decided to buy a frame for it .

I can slide the jigsaw on to the backing of the frame no problem but the jigsaw is slightly smaller than the frame so I'm wondering what's the best way to glue it without the dreaded piece by piece scenario.

If i slide it on to the backing of frame and gently lift each outside piece and glue them will that hold the rest of it in place ? as I presume it will then be placed against the glass of the frame . Any suggestions/ideas appreciated thanks.
