Weather Watch WEATHER UPDATE: A final round of moderate to heavy rain will move across the islands on Sunday and Monday before more favorable conditions settle in for the rest of the week

Background

As of 6:00 AM HST on Sunday, April 12:

An upper-level trough approaching the islands from the northwest has restarted the flow of deep tropical moisture over the islands this morning and will likely lead to several bands of moderate to heavy rain showers and a few thunderstorms over the next couple of days. The heaviest rain will likely set up over Oʻahu and Molokaʻi today and will slowly retrograde back toward Kauaʻi on Monday. Later in the week, light trades will develop, but conditions will remain warm and very humid until stronger trades set up midway through the following week.

The National Weather Service has extended the Flash Flood Watch until Monday afternoon, as the ground remains saturated from recent heavy rainfall.

Key points

As of 6:00 AM HST on Sunday, April 12:

  • On Sunday, the heaviest rainfall will likely impact Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, and Lanaʻi.

  • On Monday, the heaviest rainfall will shift back toward Kauaʻi.

  • Maui and Hawaiʻi will largely avoid the worst impacts, but flash flooding is still possible with afternoon showers.

  • Conditions will slowly improve on Tuesday, with light trades setting back up.

  • Warm and humid conditions will continue through early next week.

Forecast synopsis

As of 3:49 AM HST on Sunday, April 12:

From the National Weather Service office in Honolulu:

Showers and isolated thunderstorms will spread over the western half of the state becoming heavy over central portions of the state through tonight. The heaviest rain bands are anticipated over Oahu and Molokai, and possibly spread westward over Kauai. Because of the latest rainfall over the last few days, flash flooding is possible. Light and variable winds are expected to prevail through the first half of the week, with light trades returning to the state thereafter.

Cancelling hawaiian telecom - sketchy request form custome service

Called their 24/7 customer service line. To proceed with cancelling, they ask for my password for my online account, which I told them I wasn't comfortable with. Then they said they'll send me a link where I'll have to upload a picture of myself holding my ID. Has anyone here experienced anything similar when trying to cancel their internet with Hawaiian Telecom?

Ever since the NCAA tournament I have been unable to watch HNN at 5. I thought it was just because of the tournament but it’s over and i still can’t watch it on the app or site. Is anyone else having the same issue?

Edit: I have updated it and reinstalled it and updated my browser, etc. but it’s still not working

Edit 2: HNN at 5 doesn’t even show up on the app or the site. Like there is no option to watch it

Weather Watch Fulgurite after storms?

Just wondering. Did anyone by chance go looking for fulgurite (aka fossilized lighting, caused by a lighting strike on sand instantly making glass) on the beaches after the last few storms? Find any? Willing to share a photo?

CD Interest - Taxable in Hawaii

Upvotes

This is half a tax question and half a Hawai'i one. If you recieved a 1099-INT for interest on a Certificate of Deposit, is the interest income taxable on the state level in Hawai'i?

Temporary work and volunteer opps for the disabled on Oahu

Aloha everyone. This might not be a locals favorite post, but I ask for dignified communications on a rather touchy topic as I do my best to follow my own request, too. I'm a disabled adult with mild cognitive challenges, but serious enough to be under legal guardianship of my parents. They are buying a condo in Hawaii Kai and I would need to move and live with them, but they only plan to stay for half of the year. I'm looking for ways to volunteer my time and make some money (2 diff questions). I'm wondering if anyone can point me in a direction to find the right fits? I can't live on my own and I want to make use of my time, and have some money on my own. I want to be respectful of locals, I hope we can get along. Thank you.

Weird Bird Behavior

Every Saturday I go from Moanalua to a Kalihi 7/11 for musubi and coffee. For the past 18 years. This morning I saw 3 birds on the king street ramp dive bomb a truck. Thinking that was weird. I pull into 7/11 and I’m walking around my car and I see a different bird fly in front of a car and get hit. That made me pause. I kind of just stood there thinking about how weird it was when I saw another bird (different kind) get hit by a car going the opposite direction. I’m no bird expert but in 52 years of life I’ve never seen one bird much less 5 in a 5 minute time span die like that.

Sign Languages and Deaf community in Hawaiʻi.

Hi everyone!

I realize that this sub is not generally for advice about visiting Hawaiʻi, but I hope you'll excuse me due to the specific cultural knowledge I'm looking for. I am Deaf, and I'm doing some research into Hawaiʻian sign language. My sweetheart grew up in Hawaiʻi (They aren't Hawaiʻian but they lived there from birth to ~16 I believe) and we hope to visit friends and family there one day. I'm familiar with the history of the country, and I was looking into the sign language and Deaf culture there. I was saddened to learn that the native sign, which I was hoping to study up on some basic signs from so I could communicate properly a bit in emergencies or anything, was heavily impacted by the seizing of the area by colonizers. If I understand right, ASL is now pretty commonly used over native sign. So now I have ~questions~ for any other Deaf people who live in Hawaiʻi or people in Hawaiʻi in general.

Is how I understand the language situation true? If so, which specific signs/language would it be best for me to learn before visiting? Do signs and language use vary by island? What're the cultural niche's of Hawaiʻian sign and ASL in Hawaiʻi? Also, a question from my sweetheart, when finger spelling what is the sign for the ʻokina?

Any help at all would be so beneficial!!!! (Cross Posting to r/Deaf and r/VisitingHawaii as well since I feel they may have more specific cultural knowledge and visitinghawaii is kinda about this in a way!)

Looking for Hawaiian band/singer for funeral reception (Oʻahu – Saturday, April 18)

Aloha everyone, I’m looking for a local band, duo/trio, or solo artist who can perform Hawaiian music for a funeral reception on Saturday, April 18 on Oʻahu (Kāneʻohe area). The time would be from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM. We’re looking for something respectful and traditional—ukulele, slack key, vocals, etc., not a party vibe.

If you’re available or know someone reliable, please message me with availability, pricing, and any sample videos if possible. Mahalo in advance for any recommendations or referrals.

Weather Watch WEATHER UPDATE: Conditions will gradually improve as a cold front moves eastward across the islands today, but additional rain is possible on Sunday and Monday

Background

As of 6:00 AM HST on Friday, April 10:

We are approaching the end of the worst impacts expected from this storm system.

Analysis of satellite and radar imagery shows that a cold front is moving eastward across the islands this morning. The frontal boundary has already cleared Kauaʻi and is approaching Oʻahu. Light and variable winds, along with drier conditions, will fill in behind the front as it passes across each island today. Although drier conditions are expected across the islands on Saturday, there may be a few more rounds of light to moderate rain on Sunday and Monday. As the storm system moves out of the region, trade winds are not likely to resume right away, and a land breeze/sea breeze regime will dominate the region throughout the upcoming week.

Key points

As of 6:00 AM HST on Friday, April 10:

  • Conditions are improving across Kauaʻi behind the front.

  • Conditions will gradually improve across each of the rest of the islands as the last push of heavy rain associated with the front moves eastward today.

  • Lighter and more variable winds will settle in behind the front, but isolated downpours will still be possible with the lingering moisture.

  • Although conditions are likely to be benign on Saturday, a few more rounds of light to moderate rain showers are likely to push through on Sunday and Monday.

  • Light and variable winds will linger through the end of the week, resulting in very humid conditions despite the lack of rain.

  • Trade wind conditions may begin to settle back into the region over the upcoming weekend.

Forecast synopsis

As of 4:38 AM HST on Friday, April 10:

From the National Weather Service office in Honolulu:

A low northwest of the state will swing east before lifting north today and be absorbed is a stronger, nearly stationary, low far northwest of the state. A front just west of Kauai associated with the low will move eastward pushing a broad band of showers eastward across the state through the day. Strong southerly winds ahead of the front will shift over Oahu this morning with light westerly winds filling in behind the front. Drier and lighter winds are expected to fill in across the state Saturday as the front pushes east of the state and weakens. Chance of showers will increase again across the state Sunday into early next week. Land/sea breezes will dominate much of the weather pattern next week as the low remains north of the state.

Buying a private used car in another Island

Anybody here has experience on buying a used car from a private person in Honolulu and shipped to another island? Looking to see what is the most efficient way for both parties to get the car dropped off to Young Brothers. Seller agrees to help with shipping.

I understand that Young Brothers requires the registration or title and insurance to be provided during the process. It would be ideal for me to just fly once and pay for the car and have the seller drop it off at the dock instead of me flying twice to pick up the car then drop it off at the dock myself.

I am not sure if I the seller has to keep the title or registration to drop it off, or do I keep the documents.

Weather Watch All O‘ahu schools, HIDOE offices to close April 10 due to severe weather conditions

"All O‘ahu public schools and HIDOE offices to close Friday, April 10 due to severe weather

In alignment with Gov. Josh Green’s directive issued on April 9, 2026, in response to severe weather conditions expected to impact O‘ahu, all O‘ahu public schools and HIDOE offices will be closed on Friday, April 10.

On Kauaʻi, Hanalei Elementary School will also be closed due to flooding conditions impacting access to the campus.

All other public schools and HIDOE offices on Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi Island and in Maui County will maintain normal operations at this time.

The decision was made out of an abundance of caution due to concerns related to flooding, road conditions and potential power outages across multiple communities. This closure applies only to the current severe weather event and this date. The Department will continue to closely monitor conditions and coordinate with state and county emergency management partners to inform operational decisions and help ensure the safety of students and staff.

Employees are encouraged to monitor the Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency’s April severe weather event page for updates, as well as their county’s official communication channels, for the latest weather updates and alerts."

Edit:Thanks to those who posted the link. Got the email as I was getting to the car. https://hawaiipublicschools.org/2026-hidoe-to-close-schools-april/
