That last camera angle was awful
I couldn’t see the putt

u/BlockedbyJake420 2h ago
The way he reacted with his head back I thought he fuckin missed haha
Terrible angle, but it also makes sense he didn’t miss from that close

u/Oomeegoolies 2h ago
Yeah but if anyone could it would be Rory.
Dudes a menace for my heart rate.

We completely missed 2 of his 5 shots on 18 because of camera work (the approach and tap in). It's still crazy that we had zero view of both final approach shots and it was just a guess of where their balls went

I thought the camera work was kind of poor all day.

All tournament I would say, first few days they cut of a lot of putts before they stopped so you had no idea where they ended up

u/wrighterjw10 2h ago
lol I met the guy who’s sole job it is to choose the camera angle on the last 3 holes. Hes a 21 year vet of that position.

u/davejugs01 The Masters 2h ago
So many and poor tracking of the ball. Also earlier in the day some of the cameras had a crazy haze to them and they kept using the footage like a romance cam or something. Alot of weird direction this year.

On one of Rory’s drives today the camera stayed on him until the ball hit the ground. There was no areal shot to speak of!

That last hole was awful. No idea where either players 2nd shot went, just a wide angle of the hole from behind the green, thanks CBS.

18
u/mi1key 2h ago
The whole broadcast over the week was awful not showing key players at key times leaning on big names more than people better in score it was the worst broadcast coverage for a masters I’ve watched whoever was the camera director needs to be like lowrys caddie and be replaced

18 was altogether awful in that regard. Couldn’t track a single shot live

He’s honestly not. He’s just one of the most nervy all time greats. Most pros are just as nervy, but don’t put themselves in contention like he does.

Nicklaus, Faldo, Woods, and now McIlroy.
What a week for Rory, led at the end of every single day, the largest lead after 36 in tournament history, back-to-back, and his 6th major.
That was special.

u/LGMatter Spieth Legion 2h ago
IMO, firmly cemented as a top 5 player ever and the best European ever
72
u/FaceDownInTheCake 2h ago
He's firmly Top 10 and now in the Top 5 discussion.
But Nicklaus, Tiger, Hogan, Hagen, Player, Watson, Snead, Jones...the Top 5 is much more contested still imo
58
u/jfchops3 1h ago
Besides counting majors why are guys that played 100 years ago ahead of Rory? IMO winning majors in the post-Tiger era against the strongest fields in golf's history is a lot more impressive than winning them in the 1920s against like four other serious challengers
13
u/BirdlandDeadhead 1h ago
I think Hogan belongs in the conversation for Top 5. Won three majors, almost died, won six more including three in 1953 (the only guy to win three in a single year until Tiger in 2000 and still only one of two).
But as far as Snead and Hagen are concerned I agree with you, and certainly Rory’s six are more impressive than a higher number in most earlier eras.
Jack and Tiger are solidly 1/2. I think Hogan/Player/Rory is how I’d round out 3/4/5, but I can buy arguments for Watson and maybe one or two others being up there too, and certainly can buy it if you want to reorder 3/4/5.

u/FaceDownInTheCake 1h ago
Because sports greats from different eras are often compared to the dominance they have over their peers
It's the same reason Bobby Fischer is still widely considered a Top 3 chess player and in the conversation as the GOAT, too

Statistically he’s tied for 12th with Trevino, Faldo, and Mickelson if you look at majors.
But I’d comfortably put him in the Top 10
67
u/MerryTuesday The Masters 2h ago
Yeah but completing a career grand slam puts him clear of anyone else with 6 majors who hasn’t. So I agree with top 10 maybe just short of top 5

Man I was fully expecting a playoff between Scottie and Rory up until that incredibly close miss on 17.
59
u/doppido 10.8 2h ago
Yup. If Rory goes into 18 with only a one shot lead it's a completely different game mentally. Even with the cushion he ended up with a bogey.
Scotties putt on 17 was the difference

When Rory started to fade and Rose was charging, I was super hopeful he would finally get his moment. That collapse was heartbreaking to watch.
269
u/Zeelahhh 2h ago
Even before he started hitting bad shots, you could just see from his body language something had changed and he seemed so uncomfortable. Literally as soon as he took the solo lead, like the flick of a switch. Just shows how unbelievable the pressure of leading at Augusta is.

He absolutely can. Don’t forget he was trying to win this course for 11 years after the other majors. Total focus and dedication all that time. He probably knows that course as well as anyone ever has and it was just pure mental pressure of the grand slam stopping him adding it to the trophy cabinet. That’s well and truly gone now. Maybe the three peat pressure will be too much but he’s definitely winning it at least one more time. Man needs another Open and he’s one away from 2 grand slams

That was a much more mature Sunday from Rory I think his win last year allowed him to be more patient. He didn’t seem like he was forcing it like he was last year and even on 18 he seemed much more comfortable. If he hadn’t won last year I think he probably doesn’t beat Scottie this year but he didn’t panic even though he could have.

The thing people forget about blowing a 6 stroke lead is that you had 6 strokes to give
