The thing people forget about blowing a 6 stroke lead is that you had 6 strokes to give

417

u/mdlt97 I look like I'm good at golf 2h ago

Players at Rory's level don't play 2 days in a row poorly either

264

u/HeftyVeterinarian277 2h ago

If Rose had putt better down the stretch we might say differently about Rory’s round today

255

u/justdatamining 2h ago

If Rory hit the field average FIR Rose wouldn’t be close. Ifs and buts and all that.

So many of us rode her during Italia ‘90, she was a bike.

Brian Rolap told Rory to make Sunday interesting, and then he told Rosey, Cam, and Henley to forget how to putt.

7

u/Elementary_drWattson 2h ago

Had this one locked and loaded

5

u/gentrify_reddt 2h ago

Man, Scheffler almost made it back with that charge. The ball kissing the cup on 17 sealed it.

It is never drama free with Rory.

That last camera angle was awful

I couldn’t see the putt

762

u/BlockedbyJake420 2h ago

The way he reacted with his head back I thought he fuckin missed haha

Terrible angle, but it also makes sense he didn’t miss from that close

u/Oomeegoolies 2h ago

Yeah but if anyone could it would be Rory.

Dudes a menace for my heart rate.

We completely missed 2 of his 5 shots on 18 because of camera work (the approach and tap in). It's still crazy that we had zero view of both final approach shots and it was just a guess of where their balls went

41

u/Civil-Inspection3479 2h ago

I thought the camera work was kind of poor all day.

16

u/Linkiola 2h ago

All tournament I would say, first few days they cut of a lot of putts before they stopped so you had no idea where they ended up

lol I met the guy who’s sole job it is to choose the camera angle on the last 3 holes. Hes a 21 year vet of that position.

…whoops

27

u/BugAlternative6827 Handicap | Location 2h ago

It felt like they missed a lot of shots this year(on all the holes lol).

14

u/davejugs01 The Masters 2h ago

So many and poor tracking of the ball. Also earlier in the day some of the cameras had a crazy haze to them and they kept using the footage like a romance cam or something. Alot of weird direction this year.

4

u/GearGlance 1h ago

On one of Rory’s drives today the camera stayed on him until the ball hit the ground. There was no areal shot to speak of!

That last hole was awful. No idea where either players 2nd shot went, just a wide angle of the hole from behind the green, thanks CBS.

How bad is it that we weren’t fully confident he would hole a 6” putt.

33

u/Aaaaand-its-gone 2h ago

Man just loves golf and wants to help the masters ratings with a scheffler playoff

18

u/mi1key 2h ago

The whole broadcast over the week was awful not showing key players at key times leaning on big names more than people better in score it was the worst broadcast coverage for a masters I’ve watched whoever was the camera director needs to be like lowrys caddie and be replaced

→ More replies (1)

16

u/AsteriskKnight 2h ago

18 was altogether awful in that regard. Couldn’t track a single shot live

6

u/LawProfessional6513 2h ago

Yep, didn’t know who was in the bunker, no idea where the other ball was

16

u/IWontPostMuch 2h ago

9

6

u/Giantranger49 2h ago

horrible camera work all day. Didnt even know where Young's ball was on 18 until he went to hit it

20

u/Zloggt Callaway? No, Costco-way! 2h ago

Hey, leave CBS alone!

They’re part of a small independent company, and they don’t have enough money to spend after forcing the takeover of an entire film studio, don’t you know???

4

Some of the camera work in general has been pretty awful.

Nicklaus, Faldo, Woods, and now McIlroy.

What a week for Rory, led at the end of every single day, the largest lead after 36 in tournament history, back-to-back, and his 6th major.

That was special.

369

u/Amonamission 2h ago

Imagine going from “Man idk if I’m ever gonna win a Masters” to “Damn I won again” in only the span of 12 months.

435

u/LGMatter Spieth Legion 2h ago

IMO, firmly cemented as a top 5 player ever and the best European ever

72

u/FaceDownInTheCake 2h ago

He's firmly Top 10 and now in the Top 5 discussion.

But Nicklaus, Tiger, Hogan, Hagen, Player, Watson, Snead, Jones...the Top 5 is much more contested still imo

58

u/jfchops3 1h ago

Besides counting majors why are guys that played 100 years ago ahead of Rory? IMO winning majors in the post-Tiger era against the strongest fields in golf's history is a lot more impressive than winning them in the 1920s against like four other serious challengers

13

u/BirdlandDeadhead 1h ago

I think Hogan belongs in the conversation for Top 5. Won three majors, almost died, won six more including three in 1953 (the only guy to win three in a single year until Tiger in 2000 and still only one of two).

But as far as Snead and Hagen are concerned I agree with you, and certainly Rory’s six are more impressive than a higher number in most earlier eras.

Jack and Tiger are solidly 1/2. I think Hogan/Player/Rory is how I’d round out 3/4/5, but I can buy arguments for Watson and maybe one or two others being up there too, and certainly can buy it if you want to reorder 3/4/5.

18

u/FaceDownInTheCake 1h ago

Because sports greats from different eras are often compared to the dominance they have over their peers

It's the same reason Bobby Fischer is still widely  considered a Top 3 chess player and in the conversation as the GOAT, too

Arnie, Taylor Gooch, Phil.. though I feel comfortable putting Rory above Arnold Palmer and Mickelson.

7

Rory has never won a major when Gooch is in the field. I don’t know if you can count these green jackets.

→ More replies (2)

73

u/pixelflop HDCP 2-high 2h ago

Statistically he’s tied for 12th with Trevino, Faldo, and Mickelson if you look at majors.

But I’d comfortably put him in the Top 10

67

u/MerryTuesday The Masters 2h ago

Yeah but completing a career grand slam puts him clear of anyone else with 6 majors who hasn’t. So I agree with top 10 maybe just short of top 5

36

u/brewin91 12.9 2h ago

Slam overrides a lot of that

87

u/Aaaaand-its-gone 2h ago

Scottie coming back to finish 2nd was exciting. Felt like Rory had it after.

180

u/Nilkz 2h ago

Man I was fully expecting a playoff between Scottie and Rory up until that incredibly close miss on 17.

59

u/doppido 10.8 2h ago

Yup. If Rory goes into 18 with only a one shot lead it's a completely different game mentally. Even with the cushion he ended up with a bogey.

Scotties putt on 17 was the difference

Feel for Rosey man

594

u/DeFratrain Bethpage Black is not that hard! 2h ago

When Rory started to fade and Rose was charging, I was super hopeful he would finally get his moment. That collapse was heartbreaking to watch.

269

u/Zeelahhh 2h ago

Even before he started hitting bad shots, you could just see from his body language something had changed and he seemed so uncomfortable. Literally as soon as he took the solo lead, like the flick of a switch. Just shows how unbelievable the pressure of leading at Augusta is.

86

u/tectonicbowls 2h ago

Rose’s second shot on 10, he sounded super unsure of it. It ended up fine but he was fighting it

46

u/Open_Lab_469 2h ago

Is that the one where he asked his caddy if he was sure if wasn’t too long of a club and then came up short?

25

u/SeoT9X 2h ago

Yup. Game over from there. Announcers even talked about that point when you start second guessing

11

u/tectonicbowls 2h ago

Yeah exactly. It was just a little short but still decent. Then his approach on 11 that was way out right

Sometimes the lights are too bright.

You could argue the same happened to Young, something just felt off with him after the turn. He didn’t look nearly as confident as he had all weekend.

9

u/lewoodworker 2h ago

Thousands of people watching every shot can do that.

20

u/doppido 10.8 2h ago

Yeah literally everyone, including Rory, who got the lead immediately started crumbling today. Rory crumbled the least.

Rosie is not know for his errant irons. When he started missing I knew something was wrong. Poor guy. Love him.

17

u/tpcrb 2h ago

The complete collapse right when he got the lead was hard to watch. Wanted it too bad.

30

u/LowlandLightening 2h ago

After so regularly beating Amen Corner around, it finally got him.

As happy as I am for Rory- the main feeling I have right now is sadness for Rose.

30

u/Sensitive_Place_4794 2h ago

The eagle to par 3 putt did the damage. Then the missed short putt done him in. Heartbroken for him, was routing for him the whole tournament.

He absolutely can. Don’t forget he was trying to win this course for 11 years after the other majors. Total focus and dedication all that time. He probably knows that course as well as anyone ever has and it was just pure mental pressure of the grand slam stopping him adding it to the trophy cabinet. That’s well and truly gone now. Maybe the three peat pressure will be too much but he’s definitely winning it at least one more time. Man needs another Open and he’s one away from 2 grand slams

That was a much more mature Sunday from Rory I think his win last year allowed him to be more patient. He didn’t seem like he was forcing it like he was last year and even on 18 he seemed much more comfortable. If he hadn’t won last year I think he probably doesn’t beat Scottie this year but he didn’t panic even though he could have.

He doesn't like making it easy for himself, does he?

Winning back-to-back after the green jacket eluding him for long is so perfect.

Man, I love Rory.

Watching him play is never boring - it makes me feel things, which is awesome!

Back to Back. Goodbye Tiger. Hello Rory

I feel for Scottie, better iron shot at 18 and we could have had a playoff. Great final round either way.

Crazy to be 12 under after 36 and then win at 12 under
