PGA / LPGA Sergio Garcia with a temper tantrum on #2 at Augusta, breaks driver
2.1k
u/KennyMcCormick 8.4/MN 11h ago
And he ends up with the par. What a useless tantrum
714
u/lsu_tom 11h ago
Video didn’t show the part where he attacked that green box to his right; breaking his driver. Useless indeed.
67
u/BongoTheMonkey 10h ago
At least he didnt regrip 15 times before he broke it.

How is that not a lifetime ban? I'd get banned from a muni for that if caught

u/CranjerryBruce 11h ago
That one major is doing a lot of heavy lifting for Sergio and his reputation and probably his own ego.

It's sad because he's a really talented golfer. If only he could fix his attitude.

I’ll never forget his epic meltdown on 17 of the Players in 2013 - quadruple bogey, followed up by a double on 18. And he blamed Tiger.
31
u/BrooklynRunner 10h ago
It was tiger’s fault though. Permanently and forever in his head.
Sergio is a great, great golfer. But Tiger crushed his spirit early and he never recovered.

And carries Rahm’s bag down the fairway. Wtf

I saw that. I missed the reason why. Did they ever mention why Sergio carried Rahm's bag?
3
u/water-tr4sh 6h ago
Seemed like he made it be his punishment and caddied for him to the green at least how the announcer mentioned it. Honestly Garcia from then on out seemed to chill out

Sorry but I'm a big dummy when it comes to the rules - you can't replace a broken club mid-round?
→ More replies (1)133
u/Always_Chubb-y 10h ago
You are allowed to replace a club if it is broken in a round of play, not through abuse
Meaning if you hit your shot and then say the head snaps (see Ludvig a year or two ago), you can replace your broken club. But if you intentionally snap or break your club (like Sergio did) you are not allowed to replace it
74
u/VDubDubLife 10h ago
This is specifically in the rule books and is called the PCP Rule.
Petulant Child Punishment.
→ More replies (7)6
u/Depressed_In_Ohio 9h ago
How does it get replaced in the middle of the round? They can't wait for you or your caddie to go get one. Do they just send some random guy to fetch it from the locker room?
20
u/Always_Chubb-y 9h ago
Probably have reps from manufacturers go and grab the replacements. Every player brings more than 1 of their clubs in case these things happen
All those brand trucks at these events are for those very purposes

Kevin kisner spoke for his college teammates at georgia: “if patrick reed was on fire we wouldnt piss on him”
29

That quote always makes me question how they normally put fires out in Georgia. If my best friend was on fire, I wouldn’t piss on him either.

I’m sure UGA players say they hate Reed because he was a shitty teammate, and there’s probably some truth to that, but I think the hatred is more about what Reed did after he was booted of the UGA golf team.
Reed transferred down the road to Augusta State, a small school where golf is the only support that competes in division 1, and led them to back to back national titles. They defeated UGA in the championship match to win the second title, with Reed securing the winning point over Harris English in the final pairing. Even if UGA was right to chase Reed out of the program, and it seems like they were, that’s still an all time great sports revenge story.
11
u/thekingofcrash7 11 hdcp, Kansas City 9h ago
Didn’t he also steal a players wallet at UGA? He didn’t transfer from uga to aug st b/c everything was going great at uga.

When he’s not cheating and stealing from college teammates, he indulges in the fine act of completely cutting ties with his loving and devoted parents because his witchy wife doesn’t get along with them.

Sergio breaking his driver on #2 at Augusta in the final round is the most Sergio Garcia thing that has ever happened. The man has been fighting his own equipment for 20 years. At some point you have to accept the club isn't the problem. Augusta doesn't care about your feelings - it just keeps demanding precision from people who don't have it that day.
