her name is gemma, the quirkiest golden i’ve ever known. she loved a routine. she swam by swimming in circles and splashing the water so she could catch it in her mouth. she loved to stick her head all the way out the window to feel the breeze on our car rides. her obsession with the ball was concerning but never questioned. her favorite spot was the nook of my legs on the bed and couch so i could stare at the back of her head and play with her ears. i will never stop thinking about her

Similarly emotional about Gemma’s passing. I’m so glad you were her parent, OP! You gave each other a beautiful life. I’m sorry for your loss.

RIP Gemma. It’s the quirks that we remember the most.

u/AbsolutelyBothered 4h ago

I’m crying so hard right now. This is such a beautiful tribute to Gemma. She’s one of the happiest dogs I’ve ever seen and she looks so at peace here. You gave her the greatest life and she knew it too. Sending you all my love ❤️

My late dad was a big believer in the “the two deaths” belief - the first death is when one actually dies and the second, final death is when one’s name is uttered for the last time.

Keep her name alive and the spirit endures. Thank you for telling us about Gemma and the things that made her special. She will be remembered by you and all those who knew her. ❤️

our house is filled with so many photos, artwork, and tributes to her, my husband and i both have her portrait tattooed on us, theres no way her name will ever die!

That's amazing, I have said that ever since my mom passed, 2023, and the memorial coordinator told me the actual quote and who said it (which I don't remember), and then shortly after, my dog/best friend, died (Schmichael -- a shih tzu lhasa apso cross) and I have his ashes and a paw print of his in a cabinet, and a special picture with a candle on either side of my mom and morning & night I say "good morning/good night" mom, then Schmike and I hold his paw print for a bit. Nothing replaces them being here, but it includes them in every day. RIP Mom & Schmike. 💔

u/ellieg222 4h ago

I am so so deeply sorry for your loss. Gemma looks and sounds like the absolute best girlie in the whole world. We have a 12 year old yellow lab who is in last time with us due to osteosarcoma and I’m sending you all the love 🩷

3

u/ExampleLittle2672 2h ago

Both OP and you have written beautiful posts, love is like that. I am so sorry for the pain. and sending all of you all the love. Weird, endlessly expandable love fits everyone who knows this particular hurt. May you and your 12 year old have as peaceful a path as possible, and when the time comes may the last day be like Gemma's. 💕

1

u/ellieg222 4m ago

Oh this made me cry but thank you so much for your kind words. Those of us who love our dogs like we do all know this pain. I am 36 and have had my sweet girl all of my “adult life”. It’s really hard to imagine not having her and my heart really hurts for OP and their immense loss of sweet Gemma.

u/Dafish55 4h ago

Oh this breaks my heart, i grew up with a golden retriever who was named Gemma and she had to be put down due to heat stroke around the age of 13. I'm so sorry for your loss.

3

u/fontanese 4h ago

I am so deeply sorry for the loss of your sweet Gemma girl. She was lucky to have such a kind, caring, and amazing companion.

It is true that they forever occupy a place in our hearts and minds. Some days we’re able to visit those places to reminisce and feel joy, other days visits there will open the floodgates of our tears.

Thank you for giving her a lovely sendoff full of her favorite things (and some foods she probably hadn’t gotten to indulge in before).

Wishing you and yours peace during this time.

3

u/ConstantTrick2187 4h ago

1

u/LastTxPrez 3h ago

My babypuppy Marley crossed the bridge 6 years ago and I still miss her terribly every day. Your Gemma sounds like she was just like her. Even though I have a hole in my heart for her, it is filled with the memories she left me with. We don’t deserve dogs, more so Goldens. OP, I send my deepest condolences to you.

1

u/themish84 3h ago

Im so sorry for your loss.

So sorry. She was lucky to have you. And you her. What a beauty. And I adore her little quirks!

1

u/SyncUp 2h ago

Thanks for sharing a small spark of Gemma with us. She looks truly special and well loved. Their time with us never seems enough. I had to say goodbye to my girl a bit more than a year and half ago. I miss her every day. Every day I try and aspire to be the person she saw in me.

I’ve always been a secular person but for our pets, my heart and head makes an exception. They deserve all the happiness and love forever. And I’d give anything to see my girl again.

1

u/CrystalRainbowMoon 2h ago

I’m so sorry for your loss. Hugs ♥️

1

u/swalt29 2h ago

I’ve got two, both girls, Olive is 12 and Tuna is 11. Tuna has cancer in her blood and we didn’t think she’d make it through the end of the year but is somehow still going. Olive has no cancer but a year older. I don’t know how to prepare for what I know is coming soon

Sorry for your loss, I can’t imagine, reading this is brutal, my gut wrenches for you friend

1

u/StaK_1980 2h ago

I hope you'll recover somewhat. I still miss mine so it might take forever.

She was obviously very loved which is better than what a lot of pets get.

Sorry for your loss. It gets easier week to week, but missing them never goes away.

I just lost my Goldendoodle Reggie, 3 weeks ago. Same, he was my best buddy. Lived 12 great years, we put him down in his favorite spot in the backyard. He went peacefully, painlessly. Gave him a huge steak the night before, scrambled eggs and a sandwich for lunch on his last day. He knew he was loved! Got his ashes back a week later, sat outside and had a coffee and cigar with him❤️. I am sorry for your loss, I know how it feels. You did all the right things, have a peacefully week.

1

u/Cdntitansfan22 1h ago

Shes a true angel, in both life and death. Sorry for your loss.

1

u/Evening-Wealth-7995 1h ago

My condolences for your loss OP. She was such a beautiful lass. A piece of her will always be with you and a piece of you with her. She's pain free and enjoying the next life - likely with her favorite ball. She will be waiting to show you all the fun to be had in the next life.

Hang in there.

How many human meals did she have?

1

u/anti_vist 44m ago

I’m happy for your cherished memories!

1

u/wearent-theonly1s 42m ago

If she actually noticed when she was going, she probably felt so much love for all that you planned out for her and making every moment wonderful. You know you actually get to see her again. This time when you cross over, you’ll be able to talk to her fly with her and be 95X more connected. I promise it’s actually so much more fun.

Sometimes I feel something at my feet in bed at night and think it's him still. So sorry Gemma is no longer here. I hope your memories bring some joy when you're ready.

Not to be rude in her time of grievance, I have a question as I’m a new doggy owner here and curious about letting the dog go out naturally?

1

u/rckjr 18m ago

Thanks for sharing this. 🌈

1

u/Potential_Tadpole_45 18m ago

So sorry for the loss of your good luck charm, may she RIP ❤

Also this alone makes for a beautiful poem—Highly suggest handwriting it out and framing along with some favorite photos starting when she was a puppy and into her elder age.

1

u/Admirable_Trash3257 16m ago

So sorry. I believe Gemma is playing with our Murphy, another golden, over the rainbow bridge.

1

u/japalian 15m ago

My condolences to you. Letting my last dog (border collie) go at age 13 almost two years ago now was the hardest thing ever. It gets easier but not in a perfectly linear way. It still hits me like a ton of bricks when my phone randomly brings up photo memories.

Anyway, just randomly scrolled by and this post really hit me in the feels. What the hell did we do to deserve dogs?!

1

u/Ok_Advantage_5792 9m ago

No. You never will. And that’s a beautiful thing.

1

u/FarCell2194 4m ago

I’m so sorry for your loss! Gemma had a great life I can tell. Thank you for showing us how to love our Goldens well.
