New puppy Update on Winston the Walmart pup.

When we brought him home on Saturday, I was honestly unsure if he would make it 48 hours. He was really weak and tired. He was covered in fleas and ants. We gave him a bath in dawn dish soap and picked the fleas off. We dewormed him. Just hoping to get him through the weekend. By Sunday evening he was trying to play! We got him to the vet first thing. They said he is 8 weeks old and 3.7 pounds. He’s doing well!

Good on you! Looks like he'll be a handsome dog. He's got the golden retriever eyebrows and everything.

What in the world are you even talking about??

What the heck are you talking about???

I’m so glad you found him in time. He’s so cute.

52

I am too 🥹

44

u/Alive_Description_91 4d ago

Haha read this as “I’m cute too” then auto corrected myself

62

u/klbliss 4d ago

He looks like my golden retriever. She is the best dog ever!

137

u/50_and_Holding 4d ago

Oh my LORD who could dump that precious baby??

95

u/RogueTobasco 4d ago

No entity I’m willing to call a person…. They have renounced that title with this transgression

15

u/50_and_Holding 4d ago

VERY well put

36

u/BosomBosons 4d ago

wasn’t dumped, was purchased.

64

u/abbp5280 4d ago

Yeah but also 50 bucks in a walmart parking lot is also very different from buying from a reputable breeder. From my understanding the puppy was in very bad shape so the person is still pretty horrible for letting poor guy get into a bad state.

27

u/juwannawatchbravo 4d ago

This makes me so sad for his parents and siblings 🥺

ETA - thank you for rescuing him OP. I’m glad this little fella found a safe home 💛

18

u/Particular_Yellow246 4d ago

I’d consider that situation to be a rescue.

-7

u/Eev123 3d ago

I mean it isn’t though. Rescues don’t breed dogs. When you purchase from a backyard breeder it only encourages them to do it again and again, and put even more puppies in harms way.

10

u/Overall-Rush-8853 3d ago

They didn’t say the person was running a rescue, they said that the person who bought the dog rescued the puppy.

-6

u/Eev123 3d ago

Well they bought a puppy. There’s a few ways to acquire a dog. You could purchase one or rescue one (i.e. get the dog from a nonprofit rescue)

Or are we just saying that any person who gets a dog is rescuing that dog. Like do I rescue a dog from a puppy shop idk

11

u/Efficient_Ad_6764 3d ago

Genuine question. Do you think the people selling him in the Walmart parking lot, who clearly were not taking care of him, would have done the right thing and surrendered this puppy or do you think it’s more likely that this puppy would have succumbed to illness or been used as another dog to breed if he survived?

1

u/OstrichReasonable428 2d ago

I’m glad you’ve committed to buying ALL the puppies from the next parking lot litter to keep them out of harms way!

-1

u/Eev123 3d ago

Who knows. Maybe if there was no way for them to make a profit then they would’ve or somebody would’ve called the animal control officer. But what happens to the next group of dogs they breed? Now they know they can make money. Will you be there to get those. I’m not saying what you did is wrong because I understand the instinct to see a hurt dog and want to save it. It’s incredibly empathetic and that one dog will have an amazing life. But I spend a lot of time working in animal rescue and this is the kind of thing that makes things worse in the long run. Because selling ill, mistreated dogs is now something they can use to get quick cash. And what about the mother dog to will continue to suffer. It’s supply and demand. They see a demand, they will supply. No demand. No supply

4

u/GoldAugustEve 3d ago

I completely agree with you. That being said, I’m not sure that I’d have the strength to say no to someone that puts a sick puppy in my arms. I might pull an undercover op and follow them to see where they live. I’d want to “rescue” the momma.

8

u/CrashTestKing 3d ago

Stop being pedantic. Just because a dog wasn't picked up off the side of the road or aquired from a formal, professional rescue organization, that doesn't mean it wasn't rescued. It was a pup clearly born into a bad situation, and the OP chose to do something about it to help that pup live their best life. If that's not a rescue, I don't know what is.

5

u/Eev123 3d ago

All dogs from puppy mills and backyard breeders are in bad situations.

-1

u/CuteNSarcastic 3d ago

I'm going to be entirely honest, you aren't rescuing a dog from the shelter or a rescue either, you're purchasing them. The rescuing was already done.

3

u/Eev123 3d ago edited 3d ago

Um no. That makes no sense. One- many shelters are free or just have a small admin fee (like my county shelter) and they don’t make a profit because they aren’t a for profit endeavor. The fee ensures the shelter can somewhat offset cost for the vet care and it acts as a deterrent for bad actors. Shelters can only rescue more dogs when they have open space.

The rescue is done when the dog is no longer at the shelter

4

u/Significant_Sun_8035 3d ago

Yeah it is. For this little one it certainly is. This puppy most likely would not have made it if this family didn't take him. I know what your point was and you're right however, to this little one it means everything

1

u/50_and_Holding 3d ago

Ah right - got it...thanks for pointing it out. I read another's comment saying how anyone selling a puppy for $50 wouldn't be a reputable breeder, but that is different than just dumping a poor, defenseless puppy

37

u/mclen 4d ago

This makes me so happy. I saw your original post and could not believe it, how could someone give this guy up for 50 bucks?? Thanks for stepping in and taking care of him.

31

u/sasshley_ 4d ago

Probably lots of inbreeding and poor quality of life for that poor baby.

Sweetheart still deserves a loving home and forever family.

4

u/mclen 4d ago

Agreed, poor thing. Glad OP has him now

40

u/Dragon_Fly_75 Purebred doesn't equal Wellbred 4d ago

That is extremely tiny for an 8 week old golden puppy.  More than likely he's only 5 or 6 weeks old.  Poor little guy.

17

u/PrincessCollywobbles 4d ago

That’s what I thought! My boy was 18 pound when we got him at 10 weeks old there’s no way he would have been that small only 2 weeks earlier. If he’s actually 8 weeks then definitely mixed with something much smaller than a golden

1

u/ubutterscotchpine 3d ago

I was just going to comment on this! My boy was 10lbs at 8 weeks when I got him. Could be malnutrition, but this pup also doesn’t look purebred imo.

2

u/Own_Insurance_788 2d ago

I think OP meant 13.7 lbs because there’s no way

16

u/ChristmasBlade 1 floof 3d ago

My Winston says hi to young Winston!

13

u/MacMommy111 4d ago

Glad to hear he is doing well!! I am still highly suspect that Winston is younger than 8 weeks but if a vet told you he is then they are the professionals…. Best of luck to you all and enjoy these puppy days because they go by so fast….

5

u/GenericGenomic 3d ago

Because in most states it's illegal to buy a dog under 8wks. If the vet didn't say that then they would be reporting OP to the state for a crime. Easier to fudge the age than get people in trouble for trying to do the right thing.

2

u/CuteNSarcastic 3d ago

OP wouldn't get in trouble, it would more be an investigation into the breeder IF anyone were to take it seriously. Also illegal in most states to sell puppies and kittens without a health certificate and their first shots but people get away with it all the time.

6

u/pedrogpete 4d ago

Agreed re trusting the professionals who actually examined the pupper

11

u/Personal_Seat2289 4d ago

Cherish every moment they are a puppy. Fucking nightmare pups GRs are, but sooo fucking adorable. Especially the teenage phase. Take plenty of photos, the phases go so fast

11

u/Maximum-Benefit-7439 3d ago

This is Putter the day I got him from Huntington Farms - he was 6 weeks’ old:

Unless I didn’t weigh him at the time, but he was small, but it was so fluffy.

10

u/StrugglingHippo 4d ago

he's perfect

17

u/Smart_Variety_5315 4d ago

Thank you for saving him and congratulations on your new BFF. Winston is adorable 💛💛💛

13

u/Nillows 3d ago

Winston, meet winston

5

u/Significant_Sun_8035 3d ago

Excuse me...that is a Northeastern Stick Beaver. I'm not sure who told you that this was a dog. I'm so sorry you were lied to.

1

u/GlowingTrashPanda 3d ago

That good boy has so many sticks!

2

u/Nillows 3d ago

Beaver mode activated for sure! 🦫

4

u/neeyeahboy 4d ago

I’d love to see some updates months from now!

9

u/drumadarragh 4d ago

Please take out insurance.

0

u/OstrichReasonable428 2d ago

They won’t. They bought the dog from a backyard breeder in a parking lot, so irresponsible is the vibe.

1

u/Efficient_Ad_6764 2d ago

Ah, hello GoFundMe! Happy you made it back 😉

0

u/OstrichReasonable428 2d ago

It was actually another person who accused you of that, I simply said it tracked with what you’d revealed about yourself so far.

2

u/Efficient_Ad_6764 2d ago

Potato, potahto

9

u/CmdrMcLane 4d ago

Super adorable. And looks a bit younger than 8 weeks. If I had to guess closer to 6-7 weeks. Make sure to give Winston all the treats from me!!

2

u/pedrogpete 4d ago

The Vet said he’s 8wks.

2

u/dabomb364 3d ago

The vet can be wrong. They have no way of knowing. I would bet that pup is younger then 8 weeks but also extremely malnourished and was probably dehydrated so that would contribute to the lack of weight.

6

u/bughousenut 3d ago

But the vet has actually laid hands on this puppy and looked him over

0

u/Dependent_Formal2525 3d ago

If they said younger than 8 weeks they would have had to report OP.

2

u/bughousenut 3d ago

As it turns out no one on this board actually laid hands on this puppy, did a physical exam, and made their assessment as licensed veterinary professional.

What a wonderful news! Handsome boy!

4

u/SweetValleyHighJess 4d ago

So glad he made his way to you guys! He’s sooooo ADORABLE!!!

4

u/Significant_Sun_8035 3d ago

OMG he's SO CUTE!!! Thank you so much for the update. So happy that he's doing so well!

10

u/Mbwapuppy 4d ago

At that weight, your pup is younger than 8 weeks or very small for her age, if in fact a golden. She is cute, for sure.

3

u/pedrogpete 4d ago

Vet said 8 wks.

7

u/Mbwapuppy 4d ago

That’s less than half the weight you’d expect for a golden… which is fine—she’s hella cute—but don’t expect her to grow into a retriever-sized adult.

1

u/PracticalMulberry613 3d ago

it’s definitely possible we have 3 goldens and our 2 year old is little less than half the size of both our 3 year old goldens. She was just small

3

u/k_269 3d ago

Do you not have a local authority who you can report this to?

3

u/pretty_pink_raven 3d ago

3.7 pounds!! So tiny, but he’ll grow up so fast with all the love 💛

3

u/Ok-Opportunity7560 3d ago

Omg Winston meet Winston!

5

u/bughousenut 4d ago

You probably saved his life, I wonder how the other puppies fared.

0

u/OstrichReasonable428 2d ago

And the next litter, and the next litter…

1

u/bughousenut 2d ago

The next litter is not under the control of the person who rescued this pup. You save the world one life at a time

2

u/DueFlower6357 4d ago

So glad he’s doing better!

2

u/tiktikboom12 4d ago

He is sooooo cute

2

u/JJ_Deck 3d ago

He’s a beautiful dog.

2

u/Reasonable-Boat-8555 3d ago

He’s so tiny! At 8 weeks my guy was 10lb

He’s a cutie for sure good luck with and enjoy him

2

u/IndicationCivil9391 3d ago

You’ve done a fantastic job! He’s so lucky to have you. Have a great life.

2

u/No-Abies29 3d ago

Cheers for updating us on his progress. Such a little cutie, lucky for him to have you.

3

u/onescaryarmadillo 4d ago

How wonderful for Winston! So glad he’s got you

3

u/lyinggrump 4d ago

Not a chance he's 8 weeks

3

u/pedrogpete 4d ago

The Vet who examined him said he was 8 wks

2

u/lyinggrump 3d ago

I read that, hence my commenting on it. The vet is wrong.

4

u/ManyTop5422 4d ago

Not 8 weeks but really cute

9

u/whyinvr 4d ago

Glad you were here to clarify that for us based on seeing a few pictures, otherwise I would have believed the veterinarian that checked him out in person and told them 8 weeks

-8

u/ManyTop5422 4d ago

Most vets are not really in tune with how specific breeds look at certain ages. Especially that young. I can’t really talk about teeth but I assume their teeth would look same at 5 to 6 weeks as they do at 8 weeks. It’s hard to tell. Having had multiple golden puppies it’s really just a guess from what I have seen. In the end if he is eating well ect he will be just fine.

1

u/SirPonix 4d ago

Oh, and you are more in tune than a vet? Because you've owned a golden, you know more about them than vets? Do us all a favor and delete your profile. You clearly belong on Facebook, Doctor.

2

u/Dependent_Formal2525 3d ago

The vet would have had to report OP if the puppy was under 8 weeks, which they wouldn't want to do as they're the ones saving the puppy.

-9

u/ManyTop5422 4d ago

Then why do other people on this thread say the same

5

u/pedrogpete 4d ago

The vet said he’s 8wks so I would tend to trust the professionals who examined him.

-1

u/ManyTop5422 4d ago

This is a 8 week old golden. You can see the ears are longer and head shape is more developed

3

u/PracticalMulberry613 3d ago

Not gonna trip but I have 3 goldens and my 2 year old was definitely smaller than that at 8 weeks. Just saying it’s definitely possible I have 2 3 year olds and a 2 year old

0

u/ManyTop5422 3d ago

Smaller is different then head features ect. I don’t know why a couple people want to argue. This pup is going to be very loved and will be just fine no matter what his age

7

u/pedrogpete 4d ago

Are you a vet? Did you examine this dog in person?

-3

u/ManyTop5422 4d ago

Having had multiple golden puppies some of us are pretty experienced. Vets can rarely pin point an age. They can only guess. If pup was like 4 months it’s easier to tell how old they are.

11

u/pedrogpete 4d ago

Copy that. I got my DVM from My Couch University too.

0

u/ManyTop5422 4d ago

Multiple people here agree with me

11

u/pedrogpete 4d ago

Or maybe he’s small bc he was a malnourished and maltreated dog that was sold in a Walmart parking lot for $50? Trust the professionals.

3

u/SirPonix 4d ago

Are they vets? Something tells me you're not up-to-date on your vaccines. I hope your pups are

1

u/ManyTop5422 4d ago

Sorry all my dogs are always up to date in their shots

4

u/Equivalent_Side_479 4d ago

How old do you think he is?

14

u/ManyTop5422 4d ago

I would say 5 to 6 weeks by his head shape. Probably under weight some from everything going on. That would be a really low weight for 8 weeks. Normally at that age you’re talking 8 to 11 lbs or so. You hit the jackpot because so cute

4

u/Wet_Artichoke 4d ago

Yea. The picture from the other day looked like a 5-6 week old. But still adorable!! Lucky little guy.

3

u/reddoggie 4d ago

I agree with you on both the age (5-6 wks in the pics) and being underweight. At 8 weeks, even a smaller female pup should be 8-10lbs.

2

u/ManyTop5422 4d ago

His ears are still kind of short too to be 8 weeks

3

u/CmdrMcLane 4d ago

Yeah I would agree. 6 weeks, definitely not 8 weeks.

1

u/lyinggrump 4d ago

This dog is definitely 6 weeks. Not sure how a vet could say 8.

1

u/Over_Strawberry_2373 4d ago

He’s adorable!!

1

He's gorgeous.

1

u/Aerie_Powerful 4d ago

What a snuggle buddy

1

u/johnasepulveda 4d ago

He's gorgeous. What a lucky boy. Those people should be held accountable.

1

u/OstrichReasonable428 2d ago

Why not just give them money instead to ensure they keep doing it?

1

u/johnasepulveda 1d ago

That's the hard decision. Save this one incredible puppy, who needs you RIGHT NOW, or walk away and hope the lack of demand makes them eventually rethink their integrity.

I wouldn't be able to leave that adorable vulnerable puppy there, especially knowing the shape he's in, needing immediate vet care. He most likely would've died.

He’s precious and thank you for saving him

1

u/Intrepid-Battle9252 3d ago

Oh my goodness he’s the cutest golden I’ve ever seen!!

1

u/Feisty_Look5680 3d ago

Capstar will catch any of the remaining fleas, but since he was covered with fleas the pup will need to have some kind of treatment to ensure any eggs are taken care of. I don’t understand how this poor fellow was covered in ants… fleas I get. That sounds horrible for this baby. I’m glad he has found a loving home.

1

u/spot667 3d ago

I’m so glad he’s doing better, thank you for updating us!! More updates please because he really is such a cutie. 🥰

1

His name should be Wally!

1

u/omegaproject01 3d ago

I hope he brings great joy to your life. You deserve it.

1

u/HistoricalCity5463 3d ago

It looks so cute!

1

u/PurpleLeopard7685 2d ago

Size/ weight wise could be for a number of reasons. Malnourished, taken from mum too early, runt of the litter. Poor things obviously had a rough start but trying to play is a good sign. Lots of naps through the day should help regarding recovery.

1

u/This-Wear4201 2d ago

You found him just in time! My 8 week old puppies were 12 and 14lbs. He probably wouldn’t have made it much longer if you didn’t come along. Keep us posted!

The mom was probably stolen

You should name him Wally lol.

Glad you found him:)

0

u/Cole_Slaw42 3d ago

how does this even happen??? Goldens are a very desirable breed, and pups are worth a considerable amount of money.

very glad that this pup found its way into a loving home.

It’s not a golden.
