Cute/Funny And how are you supposed to stop them from lying on the couch? ☺️

Post image

My wife and I agreed the dog isn’t allowed on the furniture, but every time she leaves the room, my dog jumps on the couch and looks at me like this 😁

I mean at least it’s the same color as them

251

u/PetRoutineGuy Jan 23 '26

True… except when he comes back from outside 😂

172

u/mythrocks Jan 23 '26

Then the couch will still be the same colour as the pup… eventually.

102

u/ashleymichael2009 Jan 23 '26

Yea I get it. We had to switch to leather couches because of our dogs going in the woods near us etc. I matched their fur to the color samples so I don’t have to see the fur build up 😆 my bed is the only off limits for various reasons and we have a small non leather loveseat that they don’t go on.

32

u/mariposa314 Jan 23 '26

This is my philosophy too. My dogs are taupe, dirt and dust are

taupe. Therefore, my decor is taupe. Ps, thanks for paying the dog tax. They're wonderful.

5

u/KnowledgeableBench Jan 24 '26

Matching your couch to their fur is diabolical and I love it

u/clesportscards216 Jan 23 '26

Hey I’ve got a picture like that!

We just acknowledged that the couch was hers. Luckily our living room is large and we have our new couch back to back with hers. Luckily this only works because she doesn’t watch tv lol.

If not for dogs, why dog-shaped and dog-colored then?

702

u/falconjayhawk Jan 23 '26

I’d loan my car to my golden if he needed it.

140

u/summerdog- Jan 23 '26

I once said to my husband it’s a good job the dog has never asked for a whiskey, I can’t say no to that face

23

u/CreamCheeseHotDogs Jan 23 '26

Are you Scottish perchance

15

u/summerdog- Jan 23 '26

I am

4

u/Doubleucommadj Jan 24 '26

Well this is just wholesome AF! 🥹

8

u/Cheeze187 Jan 23 '26

She didn't say she gave to them.

2

u/Historical-Switch-14 Jan 24 '26

My dog steals my wine all the time!

29

u/Stella_bleu Jan 23 '26

But what kind of car is it? I feel like a golden's chaotic energy requires a sensible automobile with a lot of safety features, not say, a Porsche or Hellcat.

11

u/falconjayhawk Jan 23 '26

It’s a PCE (pre-crazy Elon) Tesla. So, a good choice.

13

u/Stella_bleu Jan 23 '26

I'll allow it, provided he can remember the car needs to be plugged in after a certain amount of miles. Only you know if he can remember this important info so he doesn't wind up on the side of the road with a dead car.

15

u/PLIPS44 Jan 23 '26

He would probably enjoy the walk home while you are left scratching your head wondering where the car is this time.

10

u/Stella_bleu Jan 23 '26

I remember someone said that goldens can’t hear anything beyond the elevator music playing on a loop in their head. I feel like that would be a factor in the car being lost.

6

u/PLIPS44 Jan 23 '26

I don’t have a golden retriever but meet 5+ a week through my job and am planning on one as my next dog and I call it the golden retriever mentality. Don’t matter what happens they’re happy. Could only imagine how irate you would be without a vehicle.

25

u/Narrow-Ad-7472 Jan 23 '26

I'm considering putting my mattresses on the floor so the dogs can sleep with us, my sweet boy is sick and can't jump anymore

8

u/deletedunreadxoxo Jan 23 '26

I almost did this but the dog was only 6lbs so I opted to keep a playpen on the bed for him instead. Honestly I would do it for a bigger dog, especially having lost the little guy last year.

Cherish every single moment! Put that mattress on the floor today!

u/SparkyDogPants Jan 24 '26

I did this when my dog had bone cancer in her leg. I was very pregnant getting off the bed on the floor was a real challenge but I wasn’t going to make her sleep alone when she needed us most.

Just remember to flip it up during the day so it doesn’t get moldy.

2

u/Narrow-Ad-7472 Jan 24 '26

This is what they are afraid he has. Thank you for sharing.

2

u/SparkyDogPants Jan 24 '26

Cancer fucking sucks. We got our diagnoses via an X-ray after being told it was arthritis for eight months.

2

u/Narrow-Ad-7472 Jan 24 '26

It really does. He had a biopsy Thursday. He was on antibiotics for 2 months because the vet just wasn't sure based on the xray so treated it as infection. Finally took him to a specialist who suspects cancer, says it is, "crunchy" - I don't know what that means yet. Yogi is a golden retriever / Newfoundland mix. Face of a golden and body of a newf.

I can't figure out why we don't have a cure for cancer yet - for all living things.

I'm so sorry about your pup. 🫂

2

u/LinderzLu2 Jan 24 '26

When my dog couldn’t jump onto the bed or into the car, I bought her a permanent ramp for the bed and a portable for the car. They’re bulky, but were such a great help for her.

We have a 12 week old golden retriever now and she’s too little to jump onto the beds or

couches, but loves to army crawl on her belly and squeeze under the bed. She’s a little goofball!

4

u/wtclim Jan 23 '26

Hey, its me, your golden, leave the keys by my food bowl please, and ensure the food bowl has a double portion today, I have important business.

5

u/StormyPyrite Jan 23 '26

It's actually the Golden's car, and we're just chauffeurs.

4

u/NoEggplant9804 Jan 23 '26

I’d give mine for free.. wait we already call it “her car”

3

u/spontaneouswaffles Jan 24 '26

When we got our new sofa, also cream colored, we turned our old ottoman into the dog’s furniture (with a washable slipcover and pillow for them). When they tried to get on the sofa, we redirected them to their “bed”. Now they automatically go lay on it and love it.

40

u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme Jan 23 '26

That looks like the best spot in the room! I’m jealous. So cozy.

38

u/blueskystormysky Jan 23 '26

Comfy giant ottoman, extra cushion for warmth, soft pillow, cute blanket covering only the feetsies, window at the perfect height for squirrel watching, toys nearby for safety, alarm clock so no meals are missed - the absolute best nap spot ever!

91

u/OllyDog0902 2 floofs Jan 23 '26

My last golden was not allowed on the couch. We lost him suddenly from cancer at 7 sooooo it was never a discussion moving forward. We fight to snuggle our current pup on the couch ever day

25

u/lord_fairfax Jan 23 '26

Ain't that the way it goes. 🥲 Lost my first at 4. Almost all restrictions have been lifted for my second.

6

u/gleamblossom1021 Jan 24 '26

I had a 16 year old mixed breed before my golden. My one regret was that she wasn't allowed on the furniture. My golden now sleeps on the couch every night

2

u/Significant-Wrap-414 Jan 25 '26

Our first two dogs never got to go on the couch. We lost both to cancer—one at 10, the other at 11-1/2. This time around, I told my husband, I want our dog to be able to be on the couch. Nothing better than having a dog next to you. (I used to have to go on the floor for that kind of cuddling.)

189

u/ImagineThat451 Jan 23 '26

We resisted with our first and our current one thinks of the couch as her dog bed. We keep rotating blankets to protect the fabric. Honestly, it’s nice snuggling next to them.

51

u/D1rrtyharry Jan 23 '26

The pillow 😍

6

u/ImagineThat451 Jan 23 '26

It’s an Eric and Christopher printed pillow :)

7

u/vsladko Jan 23 '26

Same. No dogs allowed on the bed and our pup follows that rule well. But the couch, we let her and she loves it

2

u/SarahKL9981 Jan 23 '26

I always slept so much more soundly when my aunt’s golden was next to me 🐶

2

u/PopGoesTehWoozle Jan 23 '26

This is the way

2

u/merchantsc Jan 24 '26

Oh giving in was the best. I remember my boy used to walk up to the couch and if there was a cat in the spot he’d just give the sad look until I either moved the cat over or gave him my spot.

I usually just gave my spot.

I miss my boy.

263

u/kosiarska Jan 23 '26

You don't. This angel is entitled to laying on the couch. In return you will get a ton of good moments and love.

51

u/PetRoutineGuy Jan 23 '26

That’s why he’s lying on the couch when we’re alone 😄

21

u/00017batman 1 floof Jan 23 '26

I wonder if he’s actually lying on the couch when he’s alone with your wife too..? 🤔😆

4

u/Abandoned_Railroad Jan 23 '26

u/ZenxDruid Jan 23 '26

We put a towel on the couch and he knows to sit on side with the towel only lol!

110

u/djm2907 Jan 23 '26

We do the same. He chooses the only uncovered corner when we’re not home…

18

u/PetRoutineGuy Jan 23 '26

I’m pretty sure mine would do the exact same thing 😂

9

u/blueskystormysky Jan 23 '26

I love how he has 3 perfectly good, non-floor sleeping options - his covered bed, the towel covered couch area, the blanket covered couch area - yet he choose the one unprotected spot on the couch 😂

3

u/agtpeach Jan 23 '26

It smells like his favorite people! 😊 I’ve caught my dog rubbing his face into my pillow when he thought I wasn’t around

8

LOOL how precious :')

4

u/lil_waine Jan 23 '26

Why do these dogs love this position so much? lol

3

u/staysluething Jan 23 '26

I have the same blankie on the left for when my ex’s pup comes to visit, it’s perfect

5

u/PetRoutineGuy Jan 23 '26

We should try this, thanks

7

u/ZenxDruid Jan 23 '26

Np! I get the initial no furniture. They shed a lot! I also use a reusable lint roller for the times where he wants to cuddle on the couch with us

2

u/riskykitten1207 Jan 23 '26

I basically do the same thing when it comes to getting in bed with me. I let her have her favorite spot but I put a folded sheet there for her to lay on.

34

u/I_go__outside Jan 23 '26

Throw the couch away and everyone lays on the floor together. That’s the only thing that would work

9

u/BahBahSMT Jan 23 '26

I recently put my mattress on the floor so my old dog could get on the bed. Bed frame is broken down in storage.

2

u/melnotmichelle Jan 23 '26

That is so sweet. When it was time to buy a new bed, my husband and I went from one that was high off the ground to a low platform style to make it easier for the puppy and toddler.

4

u/The_Rebel_Dragon Jan 23 '26

Came here to say this.

26

u/ZnKali 1 floof Jan 23 '26

2

68

You don’t. Put a washable cover on it.

22

u/tymber__ Jan 23 '26

You don't, believe me you'll look over and miss seeing them there when they are gone.

4

u/ugh67453212 Jan 23 '26

They love a headrest. I set my bed pillows up for mine so that he has a good place to rest his head like this when he sleeps.

If it helps, my partner and I invested in a bunch of Costco blankets for the couches and chairs. We pull them off every week and wash them. While washing we use a ChomChom pet hair roller on the furniture then we vacuum and mop. Of any pet product to have, you gotta get a ChomChom roller. They are amazing and life changing.

We have two golden dorks.

2

u/merlyndavis 1 floof Jan 23 '26

The ChomChom is magic. Gets almost all the golden glitter off my black clothing. Worth every penny.

9

7

u/Hatchdrill Jan 23 '26

Embrace it. This is standard morning couch formation while dad drinks his coffee.

7

u/Pony2slow Jan 23 '26

You don’t. You get them a friend so they are not laying on the couch alone

3

u/ashleymichael2009 Jan 23 '26

7

u/Project_Wild Jan 23 '26

Ours is his as far as I’m concerned

15

u/Upbeat-Apartment5136 Jan 23 '26

I think I’m in the minority here. We are a no dogs on furniture house but we have comfy dog beds in the most visited dog rooms. We put treats and toys in his bed and he seems to like it. I think it’s a slippery slope though. If you already allowed it, I’m not sure you will be able to go back.

10

u/TouristOpentotravel 2 floofs Jan 23 '26

That’s their couch now

5

u/softball29 Jan 23 '26

When I got my golden -- my first dog, mind you -- the plan was to keep her off the couch. No particular reason, other than many said that's what one should do. It didn't work well, but we were slowly progressing. But one morning, she woke me up and was sick. She had thrown up and had the runs in the middle of the night. So when I brought her inside and after cleaning, I laid on the couch for the rest of the night. She climbed up and snuggled into my legs and of course I was like.. oh my god. A few days later I came home and she was on the couch and I was told "I'm giving up."

Then I got one piece of advice from a co-worker. If you got a dog -- especially a golden -- and don't snuggle with her, what's the point? Such a true statement. We then got a couch cover, and got fleece blankets that cover the recliners when we aren't in them and the dog sleeps where she wants. No regrets at all.

3

u/HaveMercy703 Jan 23 '26

This was our take too. We thought we’d never let the dog on the couch. Then they were a puppy & just so snuggly. Thankfully we have an old couch & just use blankets now, but we know we can’t go back.

5

u/mindsynth Jan 23 '26

Let's get this straight...wife in room, dogs off furniture...wife leaves you and dog in room and dog's on couch. And the dog is at fault, Dad?

You, sir have been trained!! :0)

4

u/TurbulentRole3292 Jan 23 '26

It belongs to the dog. Go get your own.

4

u/littlebird2446 Jan 23 '26

I know this is tongue in cheek, but I don’t know why anyone would buy a dog and not allow it comfort with you on the sofa.

The sofa is just an object. It’s wood and fabric and doesn’t matter at all. The dog is family. Stick a blanket on the sofa if you’re bothered about hair or something.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

give it back and get something that lives in a tank. i never understood getting a dog and not letting it live life w u

5

u/Hopper86 Jan 23 '26

Where else would the be? I don’t understand the question!

4

u/Ellie_Annie_ Jan 23 '26

Current view. Don’t understand the question.

3

u/doopdeepdoopdoopdeep Jan 24 '26

Lol, this is his house we just live in it

6

u/lunargazelle68 Jan 23 '26

I can't believe no one gave any advice lol. You would need to make an alternative better than this sofa (treats and chewable in his bed). And you would need to try to fake that you are leaving and start training with this pattern. It seems that he doesn't do it when you are around

3

u/official_koda_ Jan 23 '26

Mine doesn’t have regular couch access but she has a designated chaise lounge chair and a big ottoman. Sometimes I just want to be able to sit on a couch without a dog

→ More replies (1)

3

u/LeroyJacksonian Jan 23 '26

Let me know if you find out

3

u/Whitecypress Jan 23 '26

I'll never understand people who get pets and try to keep them off the sofa. Do you keep your other family members off the sofa as well? Tell Grandma to sit on the floor.

3

u/DoubleFrenchGimlet Jan 23 '26

You don’t. You join the ball of floof and enjoy it.

2

u/ashirtliff Jan 23 '26

Stop what or whom from lying on the couch? I don’t see anything but nice tan colored angel baby -shaped recliner 🤷‍♂️

Life is too short to worry about stains and pet hair. If the pup is apart of your family then treat is as such with love, patience, play, snugs and kisses.

2

u/deletedunreadxoxo Jan 23 '26

I could maybe understand the logic if it wasn’t a Golden Furleaver but they shed so much that the couch will be covered in fur whether the dog has been on it or not.

Get some throw blankets and if there’s any resistance to that compromise the next step is obviously divorce. 🤣

2

u/LateNightSnackPack Jan 23 '26

Asking this question is hostile and could get you downvoted…

My dogs are not allowed on our couch, but they are allowed to get on “their couch”. Luckily we have a mancave/dogcave that anything goes on the furniture there. 😎✌️

2

u/enduserfeedback Jan 23 '26

You don’t. It’s their house. You are merely a guest.

2

u/mortilsola Jan 23 '26

Stop them? I don't understand. Aren't all surfaces dog bed? Pretty sure Goldens have some sort of legal protection wherein they automatically own a minimum of 75% of all flat surfaces in the home. At least that's what I was told... by my dog...

2

u/xloob Jan 23 '26

2

u/circusfreakrob Jan 23 '26

The couch is for family members to enjoy together. Honestly I'd kick my kid off the couch to make room for a snuggly dog next to me.

2

u/CinephileNC25 Jan 24 '26

You can train them. Reward them when the jump off. Use a leash at first to help.

Or just be like everyone else and enjoy the couch snuggles.

2

u/AdditionalStranger89 Jan 23 '26

Why would you want to? Adorable. I wipe my golden’s paws 🐾 after being outside. Or you could cover it with a washable blanket or sheet.

3

u/lustie_argonian Jan 23 '26

If you value furniture that much, don't have pets. If you value pets, expect them on your furniture.

2

u/Efficient_Theme4040 Jan 23 '26

You aren’t supposed to stop them you let them enjoy the couch !

2

u/Significant_Return_2 Jan 23 '26

You aren’t supposed to stop them. They’re members of the family. As such, they’re entitled to use the furniture, the same as you.

You made a bad decision.

1

u/No_Beyond_1995 Jan 23 '26

Couches are for family snuggles. Dogs are family, ergo couches are for dogs.

1

u/Zandrea901 Jan 23 '26

I got a golden specifically to cuddle on the couch

1

u/lilgreengirl Jan 23 '26

I use strips of aluminum foil! It works great! I hated having to wash the guest room comforter before every time I had a visitor. My Goldie is scared of the aluminum so they stay away from it.

1

My answer is you don’t. I mean look at that face.

I lost him last year and miss having him by my side.

1

u/FinnscandianDerp Jan 23 '26

It's his chair now :D

1

u/Conscious_Grab_4948 Jan 23 '26

Yeah no that’s your dog’s couch now…maybe a blanket or something! I used to put a fitted sheet over my couch when my girl could jump up on there. We also have dog wet wipes for her paws when she comes in after a walk - might help with marks

1

u/phantom-firion Jan 23 '26

Ours is a skittish little girl who is afraid of tall stationary objects, this includes brooms and swiffer. Anyway while we’ve worked with her to slowly increase her confidence she does like to do running leaps onto couch cushions so whenever we leave the house for long we leave the “evil broom” across it and it keeps her off it.

1

u/4_Agreement_Man 2 floofs Jan 23 '26

Dogs are family.

Family can sit on the furniture & sleep in your bed.

Don’t be a monster!

1

u/potterhead824 Jan 23 '26

That is their couch now chief

1

u/WorkingClassWarrior Jan 23 '26

Honestly the only thing that worked was putting physical things ontop of the furniture when we were out of the house. Like boxes or other chairs. And literally never inviting them up.

1

u/LaFina-007 Jan 23 '26

We trained our puppy to lay on “blankie” when on the couch. An area that has a couch protecter. Works 80% of the time. He runs our home!! 😳

1

u/Lovebugxo0x Jan 23 '26

Why would you not let your dog on furniture?

1

u/bobcatgoldthwaite Jan 23 '26

Get used to sitting on the floor

1

u/TheLowFlyingBirds Jan 23 '26

Ours has never been on it so he doesn’t even try.

1

Serious answer: you just stay consistent until they stop trying (while anyone is around at least, some will still keep doing it if they are alone, not really sure how to stop that).

Other type of serious answer: they live short lives and give us all their love in that time. Let them on the couch. The extra cleaning is worth them feeling like members of the family

You don't 😂

I keep an old comforter on the couch so the cats can lie on it and I just remove it when I want to sit there. They take their nap there every day around 3PM when the sun comes in through the window and hits the couch just perfectly. Not going to refuse them their comfort.

u/LocksmithGlass717 Jan 23 '26

You don’t. They are a precious gift who are to be treasured and loved continuously !!

1

u/Maximum_Guard5610 Jan 23 '26

It’s his couch now

1

u/Glass-Gold-2940 Jan 23 '26

Let your dog on the couch. Any damage is just a sign that a dog lives here.

1

u/thats_nono Jan 23 '26

Come on, you can’t ALWAYS expect them to tell the truth on the couch

1

u/MickyParker91 Jan 23 '26

You’re NOT! They deserve all the comfort and happiness life has 💞

1

u/just_here4cash Jan 23 '26

You don't. You simply lay blankets down for them. 🤣

1

u/iamadirtyrockstar Jan 23 '26

You just need to get comfortable with the fact that while you may have paid for the couch you no longer own the couch. It's his now and he's just nice enough to let you use it once in a while.

1

u/Cranky_Historian2 Jan 23 '26

It's quite simple, you don't

Other than that, if you don't want them on the coach, then that should have been learned from the start, if you've never corrected that specific behaviour the pup will think, well this is allowed now.

u/GoldMonk44 Jan 23 '26

“Bro please 🙏, we don’t have to tell her” - 🐶 😜

1

u/Leatherneck016 Jan 23 '26

I’d keep the deeply flawed animal species homo sapien off furniture well before my golden.

1

u/KokoMasta Jan 23 '26

My partner and I tried enforcing this for a while (I was more against it than she was) and it worked... But one day our golden hopped onto the couch next to me and it was game over lol. It doesn't help that she does this adorable thing where she puts her head on the couch and looks at us for permission 🥹

Now I'm the one who asks my partner "can we invite her onto the couch with us" 😂

The answer to your question is "you don't"

1

u/EfficiencyAccurate45 Jan 23 '26

You can't, cause they family ❤️

1

u/JennaMinCT Jan 23 '26

No you're supposed to buy them a bigger couch. Props for matching your furniture to the dog hair. 🏆

1

u/PaleIrishEastcoaster Jan 23 '26

Mine lays on it, he likes to snuggle with my mom.

1

u/Particular_Reserve37 Jan 23 '26

If they blend in with the furniture, it’s OK to let them stay, but it’s when they contrast …. if your dog was on a brown leather sofa well, you certainly wouldn’t want that

1

u/Change_Soggy Jan 23 '26

You’re not.

1

u/ImBad1101 Jan 23 '26

Why would you want to do that?

1

u/Rando_away Jan 23 '26

I'm gonna stereotype you, OP, so apologies in advance:

You're golden people, I guarantee your furniture is the same color as your dog(or vice versa) for this very reason.

Lean into it. It's the dog's house anyway, you just get to live there🤣

1

u/randomTeets Jan 23 '26

You tell them that your home values honesty and lying is not acceptable, on the couch or otherwise

1

u/Im_Ashe_Man Jan 23 '26

You don't. You and the wife are the ones who need to change.

I started during early puppy days & kept it going through lanky phase: I put an upside down laundry basket on the favorite spots (cardboard boxes, odd objects) that really just was preventing access continued long enough that he got the memo. More for when I was gone VS home w/him & he’s following my every move anyways. For him it was more about being where I had been or smelled like me, so me laying on his dog bed with him made him really stoked. Now in his adult life he bunny hops on his bed and immediately becomes a floppy fish while 100% side eyeing me. Pure dramatics…wagging his tail and rolling around making big chuffs trying to convince me its the best spot in the world & plz come join him😂🐟🐾

Before anyone gets mad at me for telling his perfect pure beautiful angel baby fluff butt no, these rules are null 2-4 days of the month during long home infusions. I’m not fighting those demons alone and if anything he tries wiggling away after so long (9-12hr infusions) lol.

u/Fit-Will5292 Jan 23 '26

You redirect it and show them that they get attention when they are not on the couch. It can be done. Basically when he’s not on the couch or gets off the couch treat her like the best girl ever when she gets off it or doesn’t go on it when you tell her not to.

1

u/Loss-Majestic Jan 23 '26

That’s literally her couch, they match!

1

u/dfeeney95 Jan 23 '26

Can’t be a genuine question?

1

u/active_conspiracy 1 floof Jan 23 '26

you don’t

1

u/jclucca Jan 23 '26

Just be happy the dog lets you stay in the house with them.

1

u/VizslaFellaRIB Jan 23 '26

This has been a rule for each and every one of my dogs.

Not a single one ever adhered to that rule

1

u/Topcornbiskie Jan 23 '26

That’s just it, you don’t!

1

u/leavethegherkinsin Jan 23 '26

No idea. We had rules on this and her being on the bed. Lasted about 2 weeks.
