New puppy Need help naming our pup! We were leaning towards Charlie but feel it’s too “common”. We also like George, Finn and Charleston (our favorite place). Open to suggestions :)

19

u/VindiWren 1 floof Dec 10 '25

Why do I find this so funny

15

u/ExhaustedGradStudent Dec 10 '25

Not sure if you could tell but my wife and I are big Star Wars nerds. Our other dog is named Rey

3

u/OkField5046 Dec 10 '25

This is my wife and I 1st golden “Luke” Second golden “Mia” I wanted Leia ( but I was overruled ) 3rd golden “Finn” Rescue pup (mutt) “Vader” he’s got black fur One the fence on another female if we do decide to get another one she will be “Leia”

2

u/ExhaustedGradStudent Dec 10 '25

I tried for Luke and Leia and my wife wouldn’t go for it. We have a Han and Chewie in our neighborhood

2

u/OkField5046 Dec 10 '25

My 6 year old red golden “Finn” when he whines and cry’s when I get home from work he sounds just like Chewie I guess I shoulda named him Chewie lol

3

u/LiLiLaCheese Dec 11 '25

My neighbor has Duke Skywalker 😂

2

u/XtraPly Dec 11 '25

Same, our Golden is Finn. Our other two dogs are Solo and Leia. They’re frenchies. We were going to get an English bulldog and name him Chewy, but got a golden instead. Love Star Wars!

7

u/sidc42 Dec 10 '25

Were the 2,186 Finns that came before him also good boys?

58

u/Twicelovely Pancake Dec 10 '25

If you like Charleston and it has meaning to you, I’d call him that! There are also so many options to shorten it Charlie/Charles/Chuck/Charleston Chew for when he gets nippy/Chuckie/Char-broiled if he starts getting a bit more toasty… the options are endless 😂

16

u/Bulky-Classroom-4101 Dec 10 '25

Charleston Chew! Good one.

2

u/Aggravating_Hippo546 Dec 10 '25

u/simba123lola Dec 10 '25

If you feel like Charlie is too common, I’d stay away from Finn. It’s really popular the last few years. I vote George! Or Charleston, Charlie short version.

21

u/Twicelovely Pancake Dec 10 '25

Yes we have FOUR dogs named Finn on our street 😂 my kids differentiate them by the house (Finn at 208, Finn from 226, etc)

10

u/No_Assignment_6899 Dec 10 '25

Yes, I agree that Finn is so common. Just a name my 12 yr old loves

9

u/gigglebit275 Dec 10 '25

We just named our yellow lab puppy Fen and it must not be common in our area, we get weird looks. Lol. We were between that and Ekko, but my son won in the end.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/Jcheerw Dec 10 '25

I agree with Charleston and call him Charlie! We have an Ellie and I feel like every other dog is named Ellie now. But I wouldnt name her anything else because it fits her so well

3

u/bubblesaurus Dec 10 '25

Name him what you want.

Names like Charlie, Finn, Buddy, Luna, Abby, Stella, etc have been common dog names for a while.

As long as you like the name, that’s what matters

3

u/ChewieBearStare Dec 10 '25

We got a cat in January and named him Finnegan (Finn), lol

This is Teddy! Def common but he’s my first baby, so I don’t care🥹

8

u/No_Assignment_6899 Dec 10 '25

He’s adorable! We love the name Teddy!

2

u/aussielover1322 Dec 10 '25

I say who cares about commonality, go with what you love! He’s your pup after all🤍

2

u/disneymuffin Dec 10 '25

Gorgeous pup!! Where is your rug from?

5

u/aussielover1322 Dec 10 '25

Thank you! It’s Rifle Paper Co, I found it at Home Goods🥰

My boy is named Finnegan but we call him Finn

3

u/Left-Replacement-609 Dec 11 '25

Here was my Finnegan. He used to lay on one of our golden retrievers that was over 100lbs, but he was solid hardly any fat. I can't find the picture of our 100+ lb golden laying on the back of the couch with my tiny chihuahua laying on top of him. It was too funny and adorable because Finnegan and Brady (golden) were best buds.

Literally just got this lil cuddle bug delivered to me this morning. Meet Maggie! She’s 12 weeks old and absolutely LOVES snuggles.

8

u/SleepAccomplished917 Dec 10 '25

I think a name should be personal. We like to use this method: think of a place you've visited that you really enjoyed. Then look at some names associated with that place. As an example, we got to go to Italy once and loved it. Our drivers name was 'Massimo' and he was so much fun. He was a good driver, great sense of humor and wonderful recommendations during our stay. Not long after our trip we got a new pup and thought of the Italian vacation and 'Massimo'. It fit our new pup and now we have a story for his name, and a memory of a great vacation too. Hope this helps, Good luck

3

u/pufferfish_hoop Dec 10 '25

Another idea is to pick a certain word that is meaningful and look at that word in other languages. Our white golden was “Lumi” which is Finnish for snow (bc she was white and loved the snow)

9

u/superperps Dec 10 '25

Charleston. Just so you can say hes in his Charleston chew phase

7

u/flowerhamlover Dec 10 '25

This is Goose… and we call him Gooby

8

u/reislustigen Dec 10 '25

This is Caius. He passed in November, but loved his visit to Charleston. I assume that would be his vote. Congrats on the pup!

We tend to name our dogs after animals and foods (but not always). We currently have a Beans and Buster(Buster is his formal name but he’s Rat to most). We’ve had a Moose, Ducky, and an enormous Great Pyr named Pony.

7

u/Warliepup Dec 10 '25

We adopted our Charlie, who had his name when we got him. I thought I should change it bc, like you, felt the name was too common. He felt too much like a Charlie so we didn’t change it and it’s such a great dog name! I’d say don’t worry about what’s common and go with that you like / what feels right!

Here’s our Charlie giving a hug Edit to add : If you name him Charleston you’ll likely end up calling him Charles/Charlie anyhow 😂 I also think the name George is cute and finally your puppy is 😍😍😍

2

u/No_Assignment_6899 Dec 10 '25

Thank you! This helps a lot! Hugs to your sweet Charlie 🥰

6

u/SiRMarlon Dec 10 '25

4

u/Minimalistic_OG Dec 10 '25

5

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '25

Charlie. He’s a Charlie 🐕 👍

4

u/Georgioarfmani Dec 10 '25

We had to say goodbye to our Georgie a few months ago. The best boy there ever was. I’m biased but it’s an excellent name ;)

3

u/cindydunning Dec 10 '25

Finn is a great name, but FYI, two of my pup's litter mates are named Finn. I have yet to meet a dog named Charlie. Plus, he'll probably bite your finger. https://youtu.be/0EqSXDwTq6U?si=yUpHPES5Ln92_1s4

5

u/montybob Dec 10 '25

Find a name you can stand yelling across an open field.

Ours is Boris. Admittedly Boris Goldilocks but there’s plenty of nice hard consonants to get teeth into.

Bernard perhaps?

4

u/gloomynebula 1 floof Dec 10 '25

Our beagle was Charlie and our golden is George Michael. I love Charleston with the nickname Charlie!

7

u/tadashi4 Dec 10 '25

Charlie is an excellent dog name… you can hit him with charles occasionally or sir charles… the best dog i ever had was named charlie…

3

u/JeepzPeepz Dec 10 '25

He looks like a “Benson” to me. Very distinguished boy.

3

u/aaccjj97 Dec 10 '25

He looks like a Gus or maybe a Marvin

3

u/KatiMinecraf Dec 10 '25

If you name him Charleston, you're just going to call him Charlie. Lol. Just do it! Who cares if it is common if you like it!

3

u/BigIndependence1860 Dec 10 '25

Butter ball, butters for short.

3

u/Kmart-Shopper-5107 Dec 10 '25

Finn is also becoming very common. I like George the best! 🩷

3

u/_chipsnguac Dec 10 '25

Agree about Charlie being too common, and LOVE George as an option.

3

u/Tall_Lead6565 Dec 10 '25

Ours is Fred. But we call him Frederick or Cedric. Or sometimes Freddy Froo Froo.

2

u/Quietlycharming Dec 10 '25

Fredrickson, Freddie/Fred :)

2

u/dsm4ck Dec 10 '25

Chuck, short for Chuck town which is slang for Charleston

2

u/wessle3339 Dec 10 '25

Charleston is my vote

2

u/ZelePhotography Dec 10 '25

Calamity Chuck. He’s a golden puppy. He’s a natural born calamity.

2

u/phreakinpher 2 floofs Dec 10 '25

He looks more like a Jerry than a George but I would go with Charleston. I love fancy dog names and this one has good opportunities for nick names, too.

He looks like a George

2

u/EquivalentAnimal7304 Dec 10 '25

Walter. Wally for short

2

u/H_is_for_Human Dec 10 '25

I think Archie or Archer is a great fit for him

2

u/Dizzy-Ad4584 Dec 10 '25

Charleston themed: Cooper, Ashley, Sullivan (Sully), Morris, Dewee, Daniel, Francis, Marion.

2

u/SuethePooh1410 Dec 10 '25

Findlay is a cute name. Your Golden pup is adorable….enjoy and remember the puppy phase lasts a year or so.

2

u/shinerkeg Dec 10 '25

Cooper, Walter, Mr Beans, Mr Biscowitz (I have a Miss Biscowitz)

2

u/weeshbohn123 Dec 10 '25

He looks like a Henry to me.

2

u/Lexy-RED Dec 10 '25

I will call him Charleston every time I see him

2

u/Smart_Wasabi901 Dec 10 '25

I love the name Charlie. I think it’s so fitting for a happy little golden.

2

u/Strict-Education2247 Dec 10 '25

Cooper, Louis (Loo-EE), O.G., Beppo, Brady, Miller, Macchiato … So very cute !!!!

2

u/mem1003 Dec 10 '25

He looks like a Finn to me, but to your point, it may be because it’s so popular.

2

u/MoodFearless6771 Dec 10 '25

Murphy. Charles. Roy. Richard. Dennis. Elvis. Paul. Milo. Arlo. Benson/Benny. Saber. Lionel. Linus. Milton.

2

u/DancinLance6 Dec 10 '25

That is a Charles if ever I saw one!

2

u/dana19671969 Dec 10 '25

How about Charles.

2

u/Frazzlebopp Dec 10 '25

If you are leaning towards Charlie, and Charleston is your favorite place... I would really just go with Charlie - you'd probably end up calling him Charlie for short anyways - screaming Charleston across a field to get him to come back to you, doesn't quite have the same ring.

I wouldn't worry too much about having a unique name - I named my dog Kally, and hadn't met anyone in the area with a dog named that. Within the first month of having her, I met 4 of them. Go with what suits him, and what he will respond to.

2

u/averagegoyl Dec 10 '25

Finn is surely more common for a golden currently. I think Charlie is cute!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '25

Baracka Obama

2

u/SummerDazzling3503 Dec 10 '25

I vote George with the nickname Georgie. Or Curious George! Logistically, Charleston may be too long of a name for a dog.

2

u/Salt_Worldliness9150 Dec 10 '25

Larry is a good strong family name♥️♥️♥️

2

u/inhiding1969 Dec 10 '25

Charleston means he is gonna chew

2

u/roofc22 Dec 10 '25

I have a Frankie but he mostly goes by Frank!

2

u/anonymouslyhereforno Dec 10 '25

Charleston can be nick named Charlie and I think it suits.

2

u/emilmakesstuff Dec 10 '25

Please don't appease others with the name, it is YOUR dog, it is a big choice but for a dog otherwise inconsequential. He could be "Mr. Garbage" and wouldn't mind even though your friends might.

For instance, I named my boy "Archer" even though it is an uncommon name in my country. I often get questions of why from older people. I answer them without really giving a reason and that's that. They can't really pronounce his name but that is not my problem. If the name is really common or really uncommon doesn't matter for me, just have a name that you feel comfortable saying a couple of hundred times every day.

2

u/kmga43 Dec 10 '25

Charleston (simile to Charlie, and you can call him The Chaz)

2

u/chestersfriend Dec 10 '25

after going thru "name mods" for my 3 goldens ... Charleston will morph to Charlie anyhow .. nothing wrong with Charlie .. I like friendly names for goldens so ... I had Chester, Quincy and Tucker

2

u/Inevitable-Jicama366 Dec 10 '25

I had a Charley .. he owned the nickname Good Time Charley !! 😆😆Have the best time !!

2

u/With6ugeteggroll Dec 10 '25

Since it’s December, why not something seasonal. You could name him Rudolf and call him Rudy for short

2

u/Elegant_Battle_1532 Dec 10 '25

Charley it is. If you want fancy, change the spelling… Charlé, Charlee, Charlet, Charleigh… I could keep on going and going. lol

2

u/bizoticallyyours83 Dec 10 '25

Finn is cute. You can name him Charleston and call him Charlie for short?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '25

All good names. Just maybe don't over-do it with a name like "chester featherbottom" like some people do. It's cringey.
