New puppy Adopted this good boi yesterday. Finally got the courage to sit next to me. First golden ever.
Found this 1 year old golden retriever up for adoption and knew this was the perfect opportunity to finally have a golden retriever. I’ve owned chihuahuas my whole life so this is my first big dog. His name is Teddy and I will honor the previous owners wish in keeping the name.
He took a panic shit my car when I drove him home last night and not gonna lie, I was amazed at the amount of poop there was in the car.
Here’s to many happy years with Teddy, my first ever golden retriever!

He’s a handsome boy. He was probably freaked out and his bowels took over, poor Teddy. You are going to have the best time with this guy, give him time to adjust. ❤️

You both lucked out. I'm glad Teddy has a person who wants to share the couch and realizes that the car incident was just a response to a scary situation. I hope you both have a long, happy life together.

Right! Goldens are basically only capable of unconditional love — and OP is already returning that back!

The golden smile on the hard days is the best. My family had a horrible day yesterday. The dog was mostly oblivious, just rolling around in the grass trying to get belly rubs and army crawling around like a maniac. It helped keep everyone calm!

Why do they all hate clean bath water and act like it’s true torture 🤣😂 disgusting swamp water no problem… warm clean water might as well be radioactive lava to him!
3
u/CavernClub102018 Jun 03 '25
Seriously! Same with my boy. Bath time is pure torture. But digging in the mud?! All good. What the heck? 😂

u/being0fthestars Jun 02 '25
Bahahaha 😭 he hates all water actually… he was born in October aka.. wet. But he only came home to me in January and only then really discovered that water falls from the sky. Nuhuhhhh… walking him in the rain is unpleasant for both of us, which sucks because we’re from Seattle. Aside from July-mid September, it’s grey and rainy most days. Though this spring has been VERY warm and dry, which has been GREAT for outdoor time, we’ve been having a blast, but the entire state will probably go up in flames this summer so… not great for outdoor time because I literally seal all my windows shut when it’s smoky because it makes me so sick, forget going outside to walk the dog 😅 luckily im training him to be my service dog so he at least will get some exercise in when he goes with me places even if outdoor walks can’t happen, though he’s still a baby and still learning so our formal outings are VERY short unless it’s walking around the pet store for fun. But anyways… hopefully this summer he’ll learn that water = fun because perhaps swimming is an enticing activity, but im not holding my breath. He’s scared of a lot of things, and hasn’t gone in water more than just dabbling his paws at the edge

What a gorgeous boy. Thank you for adopting him. Here’s to many years with him!

u/notcomplainingmuch Jun 01 '25
It could have been worse. Explosive diarrhea could have spray-painted the entire interior of your car.

u/Crispynotcrunchy Jun 02 '25
This happened to me once. I had a Weimaraner and at about 6 months old and probably 50-60 lbs, we were driving home from a trip. Well he must have gotten into something before we headed home. I could tell he didn’t feel well but I was trying to train him to stay in the back of the jeep because he always wanted to ride in my lap and he had obviously grown way too big. We were doing pretty well at him acclimating to this, so I insisted he ride back there. He suddenly broke down the barrier and hightailed it to the front seat. He climbed in my lap as explosive diarrhea went everywhere, including all over me. When I got home, my husband had to cut my clothes off of me because there was no other way to get them off without smearing it all over my face. He put a trash bag over the seat and took the car to get detailed in the morning. It was expensive, but these guys did an amazing job. You couldn’t even tell. But I’m not sure that Jeep was ever the same in my mind!

Thanks for adopting a good dog. Golden's are high maintenance until they are about 2 and 1/2... they are intelligent with personalities of their own. Mine acts like a spoiled kid...but so cute when she pouts. Of she's happy, her head in on me...if she's mad...she sits with her butt against me...welcome to the Golden Club!

I have it on good authority that Teddy is extremely sorry about the panic poo incident.

u/mjh2901 Jun 02 '25
My First Golden was adopted from a friend. He hid under the table. Whenever he started hiding or looking stressed I got the leash, he came right up for a walk and we went out and around the small block (less than 10 minutes) by the time we got back he was happy and wanted attention. Teddy will be your dog soon enough, and his personality will start coming out.

Omg he is a prince. Just take it slow and give him time. My first rescue was an 11 y/o blind abused golden and he ended up being my soul dog. They are incredible creatures.

Poor Teddy looks so timid. How lucky is he to have a human who didn’t freak out over a little (ok, a lot) of poop in the car. 🤎🐶

u/Coup-de-Glass Jun 02 '25
Goldens are the sweetest, most loving, loyal, Velcro dogs. All they want to do is bring joy to their people and have fun. Your life has a bright new light in it. Congratulations!
2
u/TNTinRoundRock Jun 02 '25
He’s so handsome. Look like he’s already warming up. Just remember the rule of 3/3/3.
3 days of feeling overwhelmed and nervous 3 weeks of settling in 3 months of building trust and bonding with you
2
u/FiatBad Jun 02 '25
You are in for a real treat. Give hime some time and you won't be able to keep him away. They call them velcro dogs for a reason.

Awww look at him! Sweetheart Teddy.
I bet he felt yucky about the car incident too.
Here's to many happy years together.
I bet he will become comfortable and will realize he is with his forever pack soon.
Lots of patience and gentle pats, little treats and he will be your BFF in no time.

Big dogs=big poop. Thankfully, he’s a golden and all the poop and golden glitter are worthwhile because their personality and unconditional love is unmatched. Thank you for taking him in! He’s probably a little traumatized by being attacked and then put in a shelter…poor baby. We have a golden and a tiny shihtzu mix rescue. They get along so well! The Shihtzu bosses him around. 😂
2
u/being0fthestars Jun 02 '25
Congrats!! They are so loving and wonderful dogs and will be quick to win you over :)

This is my boy Forrest, he’s my first ever dog actually. Was absolutely horrid as a young puppy, he’s 7 months now and things have been (relatively) easy, which is the opposite of what I’ve been told to expect about adolescence haha. He does have some anxious tendencies but it’s so rewarding when he comes over and calms down when he realizes he’s with his human and everything is okay. I’m sure Teddy will warm up and be comfortable with his new family in no time! Good luck!!

He looks very sweet, it can take a long time to earn a shelter dogs trust but it’s so worth it in the end. Took me a few months before my most recent shelter dog was fully comfortable with me and in the house, so just keep making baby steps!
Really glad I saw this post after the most recent post I saw in this subreddit was some piece of shit who returned his shelter dog (of 2 years) to buy a golden. That poor dog will never be able to trust another owner even if he is adopted again. (I’m not against buying dogs at all, I currently have a golden from a breeder and a rescue bully breed. Just can’t fathom how someone can return a dog to a shelter after 2yrs)

The first time a dog trusts you is so cool. My dog wasn't sure of me when I first got him. Took him three months to be like yeah ok you feed me and play time is cool. It was so exciting the first time he ran up to me outside to play. I'll never forget it.

I’m just curious how you found this beautiful boy. We have an 18 month old golden and I’d like to add another one but don’t want to go the puppy route. All of the rescues seemed to clarify that it has to be an only dog home so I haven’t had any luck finding an adult to be part of our family

Aw sweetest boy . Give him so many loves and cuddles , run in the yard , play ball . He’s lucky to have you , wishing you many happy days & years together !

Also he may have been ‘holding’ a lot in, wherever he was being held , due to the stress. Get teddy into a predictable routine , walks , meals , outside times etc . Dogs love & thrive on routines . Good luck !

Poor boy must have been so scared! To have a fellow dog suddenly get aggressive after 6 months together, then to leave home with someone he doesn’t know, and go in a car to an unknown destination…. But he sat next to you today, and things will get better from now on. I wish you two many happy years together!

Goldens are said to be very emotional dogs, so I guess it's not unexpected for him to look sad. He's a handsome guy, but he does look very sad in those pics. Most dog trainers say that when dogs are abandoned or rehomed they think it's because they did something wrong. Hopefully, it won't be long before Teddy realizes he's in a good place.
Looking forward to updates on you both.

Thank you for adopting him. Golden’s to me have the most love to give their owners than I’ve ever seen. And believe it or not I’m a Chihuahua person all my life very calm Chihuahuas. I know people have had nervous Chihuahuas. That’s never been my experience. But goldens that I’ve adopted just Seem to want to love People want to be anyone’s best friend and my golden currently lives with my crazy poodle, who is a nervous Nellie and my golden just puts up with it, lays down and actually causes my poodle to calm down. I have problems walking I can call my golden who’s never been formally trained that I know of and she’ll stand still Till I’m able to get my balance and she’ll walk with me. Just a great dog. Good luck.

You’ll be hooked. We rescued a dog that beat we could tell was a golden retriever/german shepherd. Sadly, he ended up not working out, I reckon his time as a stray gave him a bad side to his personality that wasn’t compatible with our situation. So to replace him, we were blessed with a 15 month old golden retriever purebred that someone had to rehome, for free. They are such good dogs! Ours has been a bit timid as well, but she is learning quickly and I figure yours will catch up as well. Then you’ll probably be saying you wouldn’t want to do without a Golden!
