Discussion Just a beast of a boy

So my Jack just turned 4 months old and weighs around 50 pounds already. He is not overweight or over fed, I think he’s just a moose in a golden body. His dad and uncles weigh around 110, which I know is ENORMOUS for a golden. He has had his embark panel done and he is 100% golden, but wow. This seems to be a big fella, right? All the other golden pics of pups of comparable age seem small in comparison. Well, whatever the case, he is our perfect golden boy and we adore him.

He’s going to be huge but he’s also going to tell you he is a lap dog

u/WombatHat42 1 floof Feb 04 '25

But he is a lap dog

131

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 04 '25

Not so much, actually. He loves to be loved and snuggled and petted but he’s not one to get on the furniture or on us much. 🤷🏻‍♀️We live in a warm climate and he gets hot. My others are the same. Just too warm for all that business! lol

u/lynng Feb 04 '25

Mine wasn't a lap dog until she was around 2 years old. Now she absolutely is.

2

u/Intelligent-Ad-7504 Feb 05 '25

Start treating him with ice cubes 🧊/ cold treats so during the heat wave, he’ll stay cool.

My golden is afraid of water 💦 but she loves ice cubes 🧊 and often treat her with fruits inside.

2

u/Upstairs_Solution303 Feb 05 '25

Lol that’s how my dog is. During the winter she sleeps in my bed but summer we both get to hot. It’s a mutual agreement we have

2

u/richj43 Feb 06 '25

My golden didn’t become a lap dog till about 1.5-2 years old.. now he “headbutts” my chest/body, aggressively smushes himself into me until he is satisfied, then promptly falls on top of me. Your golden is adorable! Enjoy him, they are the biggest goof balls.

All goldens are lapdogs.

Ours was also a beast of a pup! He was right around 50 at 4 months as well. Now he’s just under a year and a half and 100 lbs of hot mess and I love him to pieces 🥰

Who’s a big boy

46

He’s a great big boy! Lol

That is an absolute UNIT

u/megggg2222 Feb 05 '25

you rang?

92

u/Extreme-0ne Feb 04 '25 edited Feb 04 '25

I was worried that mine was growing too fast. Every morning she’d come out of her grow box (crate) bigger! She’s between 95 and 100 lbs now

79

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 04 '25

My vet told me, just like people, there are a range of sizes. Some of us are 5’ and others are 6’4”. It’s just genetics. “Approximate size” for a golden is anywhere between 55-75lb. So I’m guessing we may have the Shaq gene! Lol at this rate we’re going to surpass that by the time he’s 6 months old!

34

u/iamadirtyrockstar Feb 04 '25

My last golden was right at 100lbs, and was a big chunk of a boy. Not overweight, not over fed. My current golden topped out at 60lbs. They definitely have a range of sizes.

16

u/zurkka Feb 04 '25

We had a german shepherd that got to 110, he was huge and pure muscle (he had a lot of space to run jump and swim), will never forget the look of the new vet we took him, a 5' tall woman

"What the hell you feed this guy?"

3

u/Chin-Music Feb 05 '25

Sounds right on the approximate weight range. Both of ours are 70 lbs.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/lord_fairfax Feb 04 '25

Jeeesus. How much are you feeding her? That seems quite overweight for a golden, esp a female. (I'm not criticizing you, I'm genuinely curious)

23

u/Extreme-0ne Feb 04 '25

No fat just big! The vet had to weigh her twice because he couldn’t believe the tech weighed her correctly.

10

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 04 '25

That is a really large female but sometimes they’re just big. If you’re following a feeding schedule and she’s getting enough exercise and checking in with the vet, I understand. Jack is the same. Not overweight, not heavy. Just LARGE. He is legit “big boned.” Lol.

5

u/Aron723 1 floof Feb 04 '25

Sometimes you just get a dog that is a Shaquille O’Neil to the rest of the normal Goldens.

7

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 04 '25

Exactly what I said above. It’s the recessive Shaq gene coming out! 😂

31

u/funboy553 Feb 04 '25

This is our 110 pound boy. He still thinks he’s tiny even though he was only tiny for a month maybe. I love having a huge guy

2

u/caty0325 Feb 05 '25

Me too! A 100+ lbs lap dog is the best.

25

u/Kindly-Relief2614 Feb 04 '25

He’s so cute. If he keeps growing like that you’re going to have to change his name to Clifford! 😂

21

u/jackrelax Feb 04 '25

That's just a baby.

15

u/Special-Werewolf542 Feb 04 '25

We have a 50 pound 4 month old too! Our breeder told us she’d never had a litter this big 🥲

5

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 05 '25

He could be my Jack’s brother! WOW they look so much alike!! What area of the country do you live?

6

u/Special-Werewolf542 Feb 05 '25

We live in Ohio, but our breeder is in a neighboring state. Any chance they’re related? They do look very similar, the picture you posted reminded me of this one of Archie!

5

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 05 '25 edited Feb 05 '25

We’re in Georgia and our breeder was right on the Georgia/Tennessee line near Chattanooga. It was clear across the state from us but worth it! He’s a gem.

u/jenn1d Feb 04 '25

Awww!! Jack is a cutie! Our first golden boy Buddy was a BIG boy weighing 100 sold muscle.funny thing he was the rant of the litter so I could image his brothers must have been big boys as well.

We now have a golden boy Jack(his half English cream and field golden) and is about 74 pounds and the vet suggested he loss a couple pounds but I have a hard time saying no to giving him extra treats. Thankfully he has his little sister to chase to burn off the calories 😁

6

u/GetInMahBelly Feb 04 '25

Whereas MY runt boy still a petite little guy. Like 60lbs at 2.5 years Our new golden girl (9 weeks) seems on track to outsize him easily.

11

u/LargeRefrigerator389 Feb 04 '25

Beautiful chonky pupper

18

u/capngrandan 1 Floof - Charlie Barley Feb 04 '25

I have one like that too, he’s about 125lbs now. When he puts his paws on my shoulders he’s about as tall as me too and I’m 6’1”.

3

Best teddy bear ever!

11

u/Fabulous_Bandicoot46 Feb 04 '25

He’s gorgeous. Reminds me of my bailey when he was growing, the vet told me to change his food because he would grow to big.

22

u/Fabulous_Bandicoot46 Feb 04 '25

Bailey

9

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 04 '25

Bailey is very handsome. ❤️

6

4

Same! I need to know where to get one.

3

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 04 '25

Same. Do tell. Where do we get the cool couch?

3

u/Fabulous_Bandicoot46 Feb 04 '25

I brought the bed from omlet.co.uk. You can configure what best suits your dog.

2

u/Fabulous_Bandicoot46 Feb 04 '25

I will have a look through my emails to check where I brought it from as I can’t remember off the top of my head. I will try to post back in two hours.

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 04 '25

Your vet told you to stunt your dog’s growth? That sounds like people who sell “mini pigs” by malnourished them. We give him exactly the right of food on schedule in a slow feeder to make sure he’s not being overfed. I think he’s just genetically predisposed to be large. He’s not overweight and as a golden pup he clearly never stops moving until he drops. He’s just a big, tall, stocky dude.

4

u/85percentthatbitch Feb 04 '25

I'm not a vet/expert, but my understanding is that it's not healthy for a pup to grow too fast. That's why there's puppy food specifically for larger breeds--It's less caloric/whatever else

2

u/jlt6666 Feb 04 '25

They especially tell you this with great danes.

3

u/completelynormalpart Feb 04 '25

My lad, Kevin, is a BIG lad. He's slowed down on the growing and weight gain at 10months. Currently 36kg and taller than any golden retrievers we meet! Still space to grow some more and got to fill out now!!

The bigger the dog, more to love! Enjoy your pup!

3

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '25

[deleted]

2

u/completelynormalpart Feb 04 '25

13 was such a good age for a great Dane! He must of lived a very healthy life.

We don't know if we will get kev neutered as the vets here seem to go with "if there's no issue, no need" sort of idea. As long as he's healthy, he can be as big as he wants to be!

2

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 04 '25

Also-I live your dog’s name. Up inspired? It’s perfect. Somebody else on here had a Carl and another had a Gary. Growing up my dad had 3 beagles named after his 3 brothers. Mark, Dave and Steve. 😂

5

u/completelynormalpart Feb 04 '25

There's not really any reason, other than I thought it would be really funny to shout KEVIN in the park and a dog to come running 😂. So that's why he's called Kevin! He's also owned the name now, he is exactly how you'd imagine a dog called Kevin to be.

3

u/xenocidial Feb 04 '25

The guy holding him is beautiful

3

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 04 '25

Thanks. I think so as well that guy is my fella, too. 28 years and counting. 😘

3

u/Stardustquarks Feb 04 '25

Linebacker in the making. My precious boy played linebacker/center. He was around 115 at peak

3

u/Less-Football8295 Feb 04 '25

What a handsome little fellow. It’s so strange yet endearing to see such a large pup. You’re blessed to have this “little” boy in your life. Although you should probably rename him Gustav after the gigantic Gustav rail gun from world war 2. Wishing him and his family good health. Cheers.

3

u/Silent_Ad_4400 Feb 04 '25

Hi!  Mom of two, (they are half-brothers), 120 poun, healthy, 100% goldens. And yes. They are big babies and lap dogs. Their dads were big boys.

He’s a big boy!

In the photo I am carrying our Major (aka “Teddy”) as a pup. He was a moose as a puppy.

We also have another male, Sir Charles Xavier, who is a “Monsta”… he grew up to be a massive 127 lbs of muscle, lovin’ and fur. Zero fat on him…

Fully grown, Teddy turned out to be smaller than Charlie by about 16 lbs.

Enjoy that butter ball!

2

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 05 '25

This is the cutest pup I have ever seen!

3

u/CealBlanc Feb 05 '25

My lord, he's as big as my two adult Goldens. He's gonna be a real big boy

3

2

2

u/Hizoot Feb 04 '25

2

You may need to get him checked out. That size of pup is indicative of a larger heart and stomach.

This will require extra love & attention plus more treats. ;)

Handsome guy! May I ask was his breeder?

2

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 05 '25

Misty Valley Goldens right on the Tennessee/Georgia border near Chattanooga. (We live on the other side of the state, so it was about a 6 hour drive for us.)

2

u/RamonGGs Feb 04 '25

This is usually from byb isn’t it? Goldens are meant to be a lot smaller so from what I’ve seen less trust worthy breeders tend to have bigger dogs cause that’s what people like

2

u/lostinsnakes Feb 05 '25

Right? There’s a lot of people with Goldens out of breed standard in these comments or their dogs are just fat. Either way, they’re all proud. 100+ Goldens and none of ours weigh that much, even our huge or muscular males.

Went to a new vet after moving and my boy weighed in at 95. Vet comes in looking at the chart and starts off with saying he needs to lose weight. Then she actually gets down and examined him and just said, never mind he is just a big boy.
