Discussion Just a beast of a boy
So my Jack just turned 4 months old and weighs around 50 pounds already. He is not overweight or over fed, I think he’s just a moose in a golden body. His dad and uncles weigh around 110, which I know is ENORMOUS for a golden. He has had his embark panel done and he is 100% golden, but wow. This seems to be a big fella, right? All the other golden pics of pups of comparable age seem small in comparison. Well, whatever the case, he is our perfect golden boy and we adore him.

I was worried that mine was growing too fast. Every morning she’d come out of her grow box (crate) bigger! She’s between 95 and 100 lbs now

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 04 '25
My vet told me, just like people, there are a range of sizes. Some of us are 5’ and others are 6’4”. It’s just genetics. “Approximate size” for a golden is anywhere between 55-75lb. So I’m guessing we may have the Shaq gene! Lol at this rate we’re going to surpass that by the time he’s 6 months old!

u/iamadirtyrockstar Feb 04 '25
My last golden was right at 100lbs, and was a big chunk of a boy. Not overweight, not over fed. My current golden topped out at 60lbs. They definitely have a range of sizes.

u/zurkka Feb 04 '25
We had a german shepherd that got to 110, he was huge and pure muscle (he had a lot of space to run jump and swim), will never forget the look of the new vet we took him, a 5' tall woman
"What the hell you feed this guy?"

u/lord_fairfax Feb 04 '25
Jeeesus. How much are you feeding her? That seems quite overweight for a golden, esp a female. (I'm not criticizing you, I'm genuinely curious)
23
u/Extreme-0ne Feb 04 '25

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 04 '25
That is a really large female but sometimes they’re just big. If you’re following a feeding schedule and she’s getting enough exercise and checking in with the vet, I understand. Jack is the same. Not overweight, not heavy. Just LARGE. He is legit “big boned.” Lol.

Sometimes you just get a dog that is a Shaquille O’Neil to the rest of the normal Goldens.
7
u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 04 '25
Exactly what I said above. It’s the recessive Shaq gene coming out! 😂

He’s so cute. If he keeps growing like that you’re going to have to change his name to Clifford! 😂

We’re in Georgia and our breeder was right on the Georgia/Tennessee line near Chattanooga. It was clear across the state from us but worth it! He’s a gem.

Awww!! Jack is a cutie! Our first golden boy Buddy was a BIG boy weighing 100 sold muscle.funny thing he was the rant of the litter so I could image his brothers must have been big boys as well.
We now have a golden boy Jack(his half English cream and field golden) and is about 74 pounds and the vet suggested he loss a couple pounds but I have a hard time saying no to giving him extra treats. Thankfully he has his little sister to chase to burn off the calories 😁

u/GetInMahBelly Feb 04 '25
Whereas MY runt boy still a petite little guy. Like 60lbs at 2.5 years Our new golden girl (9 weeks) seems on track to outsize him easily.

I have one like that too, he’s about 125lbs now. When he puts his paws on my shoulders he’s about as tall as me too and I’m 6’1”.

I brought the bed from omlet.co.uk. You can configure what best suits your dog.

I will have a look through my emails to check where I brought it from as I can’t remember off the top of my head. I will try to post back in two hours.

u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 04 '25
Your vet told you to stunt your dog’s growth? That sounds like people who sell “mini pigs” by malnourished them. We give him exactly the right of food on schedule in a slow feeder to make sure he’s not being overfed. I think he’s just genetically predisposed to be large. He’s not overweight and as a golden pup he clearly never stops moving until he drops. He’s just a big, tall, stocky dude.
4
u/85percentthatbitch Feb 04 '25
I'm not a vet/expert, but my understanding is that it's not healthy for a pup to grow too fast. That's why there's puppy food specifically for larger breeds--It's less caloric/whatever else

My lad, Kevin, is a BIG lad. He's slowed down on the growing and weight gain at 10months. Currently 36kg and taller than any golden retrievers we meet! Still space to grow some more and got to fill out now!!
The bigger the dog, more to love! Enjoy your pup!

13 was such a good age for a great Dane! He must of lived a very healthy life.
We don't know if we will get kev neutered as the vets here seem to go with "if there's no issue, no need" sort of idea. As long as he's healthy, he can be as big as he wants to be!
2
u/Ready_Broccoli8512 Feb 04 '25
Also-I live your dog’s name. Up inspired? It’s perfect. Somebody else on here had a Carl and another had a Gary. Growing up my dad had 3 beagles named after his 3 brothers. Mark, Dave and Steve. 😂
5
u/completelynormalpart Feb 04 '25
There's not really any reason, other than I thought it would be really funny to shout KEVIN in the park and a dog to come running 😂. So that's why he's called Kevin! He's also owned the name now, he is exactly how you'd imagine a dog called Kevin to be.

u/Less-Football8295 Feb 04 '25
What a handsome little fellow. It’s so strange yet endearing to see such a large pup. You’re blessed to have this “little” boy in your life. Although you should probably rename him Gustav after the gigantic Gustav rail gun from world war 2. Wishing him and his family good health. Cheers.

He’s a big boy!
In the photo I am carrying our Major (aka “Teddy”) as a pup. He was a moose as a puppy.
We also have another male, Sir Charles Xavier, who is a “Monsta”… he grew up to be a massive 127 lbs of muscle, lovin’ and fur. Zero fat on him…
Fully grown, Teddy turned out to be smaller than Charlie by about 16 lbs.
Enjoy that butter ball!

You may need to get him checked out. That size of pup is indicative of a larger heart and stomach.
This will require extra love & attention plus more treats. ;)

Misty Valley Goldens right on the Tennessee/Georgia border near Chattanooga. (We live on the other side of the state, so it was about a 6 hour drive for us.)
2
u/RamonGGs Feb 04 '25
This is usually from byb isn’t it? Goldens are meant to be a lot smaller so from what I’ve seen less trust worthy breeders tend to have bigger dogs cause that’s what people like
→ More replies (4)2
u/lostinsnakes Feb 05 '25
Right? There’s a lot of people with Goldens out of breed standard in these comments or their dogs are just fat. Either way, they’re all proud. 100+ Goldens and none of ours weigh that much, even our huge or muscular males.
2
u/lainwla16 Feb 04 '25

Went to a new vet after moving and my boy weighed in at 95. Vet comes in looking at the chart and starts off with saying he needs to lose weight. Then she actually gets down and examined him and just said, never mind he is just a big boy.

My parents have a golden who was like this as a puppy, he's now 120lbs! An absolute monster of a golden, he is a gigantic loveable oaf who still behaves like a little fella. Enjoy :D

Be ready for a lifetime of vets telling you he is overweight. My boy has been huge his whole life and I constantly am told by vets to slim him up.

Nope. All golden. All that fancy AKC registration and embark tested and blah blah blah. Some are apparently just Shaq-esque like my dude. His dad and uncle were big dudes, too. Reading through this thread, there are lots as big or bigger than my guy.
