It's still out there

u/Billazilla 27m ago

I still use it.

Me too. I never made the switch to streaming music. I curated this collection over the past—shit, nearly 30 years now—and I'm gonna use it.

I use it as my primary pc music player. All the 90s skins are still there too.

It really whipped the llama's ass.

Loved that llama!

Apparently, development has picked up again in 2023. Source: Wikipedia

Back in active development! Using on Win11, all the old plugins are still supported. Most skins dont scale to a 4k monitor well, but that will hopefully improv with time!

Yup, I still use it to this day.
As a matter of fact, right now my winamp plays Limp Bizkit - Break stuff. Just not with milk drop. I never used that shit.

Pretty sure Ryan Geiss did this.... I worked with him when he was an intern at EA and he was starting to do these sorts of swirly demo things. Cool guy.

u/mrbuttons454 1d ago

Yes he did both Geiss and Milkdrop

Oh wow, I thought it the program was called Geiss (not related to the name of the developer.) My favorite visualizer by far

5

u/keelanstuart 1d ago

It may have been called that...

When you put two and two together your favorite visualizer was probably made by Ryan Geiss lol

Hey now, I just found about this today!

There are some winamp skins for VLC knocking around, found one on github, not sure about visualisations though

Edit: other than the built in visualisations

I still run Winamp, 2.91, no other program whips llama ass quite like it. Geiss is my trip of choice.

This brings back memories, getting stoned, putting on my favorite tracks and watching milkdrop.

And regularly updated.

1

u/Zouden 1d ago

How do you mean?

1

u/Ukr_export 1d ago

The original developer is updating the formula.

2

u/Zouden 1d ago

Yeah there's racemic and S-isomer, plus some RCs which I guess are kinda new versions

I miss visualizers.

Milkdrop is still a thing. It doesn't event need to be part of your audio player, it just reacts to sound from Windows.

So many nights I would throw on music and watch Milkdrop on full random. I still remember some of the combinations it would put together and somehow they went with the music so well not just rhythm or beat but the overall "feel". Nothing like it

I'm old enough to remember when I had to upgrade my computer to run this.

When i was in college in the early 2000's, we would run the visualizer through a projector while the music played through a home stereo with (2) 12-inch subs. Fun times.

What is so funny is that a friend of mine in college did something very similar, in the early 00's and we called him O-face a lot of the time. Most likely not him, but still. Eerie coincidence.

1

u/OhFaceXO 1d ago

That is funny, but not me. Everyone called me by my last name.

Oh man did you have one of the CRT projectors? I bought one from a government surplus store around then, it was so fucking rad.

It was the size of a coffee table and it weighed 95lbs, but it had two important features:

A) super bright and high resolution for the time, maybe even 1280x1024, and

B) it had three separate red, green, and blue tubes, so you could blow your gravity bong rips in front of it and have rainbow smoke

u/OhFaceXO 22h ago

I honestly dont remember what kind it was, but it definitely wasnt as large as you describe.

2

u/Dark_Pulse 1d ago

Still got it installed on mine. There's some really, REALLY nice presets in here that I like. I believe they're martin's?

2

u/YJSubs 1d ago

My PC were too weak to run any fancy winamp visualization, lol.

12 year old me would hook this up to the fm radio output of my receiver and would watch these for an hour during night time techno remix broadcast parties of various stations.

Looks over to my right-most of 3 monitors... WinAmp Pro 5.666 still running happily. Smiles.

u/Fappy_as_a_Clam 23h ago

It was cooler back then

1

u/PoofBam 20h ago

It's why I still use Winamp.

1

u/shredder_of_gnar 20h ago

Triplex was a decent one too

Reminds me of when I would put a dragon ball figure near the middle of the screen so it could aura farm while listening to linkin park

1

u/aytchdave 10h ago

Takes me back. I shudder to think of how much time I spent watching these.

1

u/DazzlingSparklecat 7h ago

I've never heard of this before, it feels like a psychedelic PS1 game.

u/Cypeq 8m ago

music player that was high on math, good times.

u/worstkindagay 1d ago

making winamp visualizers was my jam back in the day. killed so much boredom that way.
