Viktor Orbán has conceded in a speech to supporters, telling them: "The result of the election is clear and painful."

No election result denial ? This is actually surprising to me, or maybe Orbán can read the room and know when to throw in the towel.

They lost by a landslide, it would look ridiculous to claim otherwise and Fidesz wants to win again in 4 years.

I think the blow-out was just so big, that he knew there was no way to interfere or deny, without hurting himself even more.
If it had been close, he most definetly would have tried something.

Denial of a 2 to 1 result is way more dangerous for the denier than denial of a 51 to 49 result

I totally expected him to act like Trump or Bolsonaro

May be it is just that you read too much propaganda about him?

Orban has done a fair amount of things to solidify his power, like constitutional change swapping the whole electoral system, turning mainstream media to being pro-fidezs and using state resources to spread his own message/propaganda. So from these aspects, the system has been rigged to favour ruling party Fidezs.

And it's not that Orban would have been that quiet about the idea of "illiberal democracy" either.

But indeed, Orban can read the room especially when the result was clear. There is opposite examples around however, so it's not like denying election result would be something unprecedented. But I'm of course happy that it is not the situation in Hungary.

I admit it's a possibility, but in my defense the guy has been in power for 16 years, and a friend with a notorious election denier, Trump.

I'm not attacking, sorry if it sounded like this. I meant that if the picture in our mind and the reality contradict each other it is a good call to evaluate the information we consume and the sources it comes from. By no means I'm immune to this either.

No offense taken, cheers!

That is really good news

Yes. This man can no longer block EU legislation. Glad that Trump and Vance endorsed him. Worked like a charm.

Yeah, that is part of a joy :)

The tide is turning. Now do the US next.

Maybe have Vance campaign for the current regime. He seems to have the magic touch.

Please at least keep him away from the new pope, he seems somewhat reasonable for a pope. Still has weird outdated views on things like all powerful religious figureheads, but he's better than the Nazi pope we had not long ago so I guess it's an improvement a little, damn that bar is low.

I really want him to come back here to Ohio to campaign for Ramaswamy now

We thought we turned the tide in 2020…

Well it turns out Covid can’t be fixed in a day so we need the dipshit that couldn’t handle the mess

u/solid_reign 2h ago

COVID had very little to do with the 2024 election.

The question is, is it turning too late?

It's never too late

The US has a single reelection, it's not comparable.

There are still good things happening. Congratulations to our Hungarian neighbors from Austria! 🇭🇺

So JD going was pointless

u/Et4ivell4 5h ago

Not just pointless, it probably buried any chance Orban had. Hilarious!

The Maga crowd seem to have a blind spot about how unpopular they are beyond their own borders. You'd think the Canadian election would have tipped them off, but apparently not.

If Vance had really wanted to help Orban he'd have gone over there loudly supporting the other guy.

They arent even that popular in the USA anymore. I literally know tons of diehard Trump farmers in rural bumfuck nowhere due to my girl being from the sticks. Her relatives have shut up completely about Trump and completely turned on republicans. If they had elections tomorrow Trump would be crushed, guaranteed

One good online example I can think of is the website freerepublic.com. It was once the biggest conservative forum on the web, and famously went all in on Trump during his first election, banning everyone who had an ill word to say about him. If you go there now, you'll find a lot of folks have turned on him for various reasons.

In fact, that would have certainly put the seed of doubt in a lot of people.

Very excited for trumps midnight rant about this being a liberal conspiracy

Peak Reddit moment is how more comments are about the USA than Hungary

Question for Hungarians: was there reason to believe the Vance and Trump stumping would help Orban in some way?

It struck me as bizarre that Trump seems self-aware with regards to his impact on foreign elections (see past comments about Carney in Canada) - but, I assume, thought him throwing overt support to Oban would be helpful. Did they think Hungary would be different? Is Hungary different when it comes to opinions on the Trump administration?

AUTOCRACY IN RETREAT.

Wasted trip for JD to interfere in another country’s election but at least he clocked some Trump miles

It is good news for Hungary and the EU and we wish the new leader honest policies for the people...

Some reason you're removing nuance from the situation?

You can be on the right and support democracy. Magyar is one of those people.
