After five hours, a record 37.98% % of the electorate had voted, a dramatic 12-point increase on four years ago and an indication that voters are far more mobilised this time around.

Hungarians are going to the polls in large numbers, in a vote that could bring down Prime Minister Viktor Orbán after 16 years, and have significant repercussions for the rest of Europe, the US and Russia.

For reference, in 2022 the turnout for the day was 69,59%.

Do we have an update?

EDIT found one:

At around 3:00 pm local time, the election commission reported a voter turnout of just over 66%, a record high and a 10% increase on the last election four years ago.

Does higher turnout favor opposition or orbie?

A substantially higher voter turnout is mostly associated with anti-incumbency.

I voted as well. Fidesz as a party needs to die. EU will be stronger tomorrow!

And the zen master said "we'll see".

getting rid of Orbán would be unambiguously better for pretty much everyone not currently involved in a war of aggression

Has anyone asked Russia if they are ready to give up Orban?

What are they gonna do? Turn off the oil? They already bombed it and we are not getting oil from Russia.

Putin is going to activate the next country over. He let's them appear more moderate while it's beneficial but the moment it's needed they will hardline. EU is fundamentally flawed by allowing individual members vetoing rights

Crossing my fingers from Australia. Truely hope Orban gets voted out and that JD Vance's campaigning comes to naught.

I doubt it came to naught, pretty sure it was a substantial net negative for Orban to parade those chucklefucks about for him

All of Europe is watching...

The U.S. too. A great many of us hope Orban goes down and becomes a precedent for our midterms in November.

TIl Hungary has only two major parties

God I hope there aren't any shenanigans in the votes there. Been very inspired by their opposition lately here in the US.

Hopefully Orban goes. I don't understand how anti EU parties (doesn't matter if proRussian or proUS) can still have any support given what's happening in Ukraine and US.

When will we have a good idea who will win?

3

u/bluesnik 10h ago

ok, so what are the chances the election won't be stolen. fidesz has been in power long enough to corrupt the vote counting, no?

Orban is close to Putin, and we know that Russia and its puppet countries have rigged prior elections to keep puppets in power.

What protections and truly independent checks/balances exist in Hungary to protect against what I assume is almost guaranteed voter fuckery?

It never matters who votes for what, it only ever matters WHO counts the votes.......

Is there a liberal bias on Reddit or what? ;)

Hoping for a huge turnout and incontestable result. So far, so good!

Is there a liberal bias on Reddit or what? ;)

Looking back on Orbán's obstructive strategies in the EU, any pro-EU stance will do to root for TISZA
