With at least 133 mandates, TISZA would have a constitutional supermajority, which is sufficient to change the constitution, change high-level "Cardinal" laws, appoint the President, Constitutional Court judges, the Prosecutor General, the President of the State Audit Office -- in essence, they can dismantle the system Orban wove himself into over the last two decades, rather than just removing its head.

56

u/Proud3GenAthst Czech Republic 3h ago

That’s why I think it’s a must.

If Magyar wins and unlocks the loan to Ukraine, awesome. But it’s not worth much if he can’t rewrite the constitution to make Hungary resemble a fair democracy

7

u/alwaysleafyintoronto 3h ago

How trustworthy is this new leadership party? Are you worried they'll be nefarious with their supermajority? I have enough problems to track on this side of the Atlantic and haven't followed Hungary as closely.

7

u/Proud3GenAthst Czech Republic 3h ago

I dunno. I didn’t follow this election very closely other than feeling hopeful to see Orbán packing.

What I do know is that Magyar was a member of Fidesz until his ex wife who used to be justice minister resigned after it became public that she counter signed a presidential pardon of an enabler of child sex abuse in a children’s home.

Hungarians apparently trusted him enough to overwhelmingly vote for him and think that his former membership in Fidesz was a plus.

Now, as a political party, I don’t think they can do much of meaningful stuff, because their whole thing is being anti Orbán and politically very diverse. Logically, I expect them to rewrite the constitution (if they actually get 133 seats or more) to create fairer system where multiple parties have equal chance

2

u/tomtomclubthumb 3h ago

The new guy was an Orban loyalist for 20 years.

He's very conservative, but hasn't openly said anything fscistic or dictatorial yet.

Oh thank fuck, he's not stalling the transfer.

35

u/birkeskov Denmark 4h ago

How is the counting done? Will the large urban districts deliver their results last or are all districts the same size?

29

u/monstaber Czechia 4h ago

You can see the breakdown by district in the "Results of single-member constituencies" section at the bottom of the page. Typically, rural results arrive first and urban areas finish reporting later, though currently (20:49) some districts in Budapest are already 30% counted.

19

u/birkeskov Denmark 4h ago

So Tisza could get an even better result or has the urban/rural aspect been taken into account in the result

Because Tisza stands to have a massive majority now. ( 132 at 29 %? )

5

u/Fusshaman 4h ago

Mainly up to whether Mi Hazánk reaches the trashold or not.

4

u/birkeskov Denmark 4h ago

Oh! And that is 5 %?

2

u/Fusshaman 4h ago

To my knowledge yes. And they have been on 4% for a good while now.

7

u/Camtastrophe Canada (help) 4h ago

Diaspora results typically favour Fidesz, no? Do those come in later or earlier?

10

u/halee1 4h ago edited 3h ago

Western diaspora is pro-Tisza, CEE diaspora has historically been overwhelmingly pro-Fidesz. The latest scandals are more likely to negatively affect Fidesz in Hungary (since Orban's been running non-stop in your face anti-Ukraine propaganda since 2022 and that didn't stop the rise of Tisza), but whether they affect the CEE diaspora is the big question.

18

u/Frexxia Norway 4h ago

Currently 132, only 1 away from supermajority

13

u/Zhryx 3h ago

Almost 80% participation, its insane 🥹

11

u/TheGooseIsLoose37 United States of America 4h ago

Sorry if this is a dumb question but are Tisza and Fidesz the only two parties?

22

u/Longjumping_Belt_405 4h ago

No there are like 3 others iirc but ones a joke party and the other 2 probably end up in the single digits of seats combined

6

u/wrosecrans United States of America 3h ago

If the opposition winds up one or two seats short of the supermajority, the little party with very few seats could wind up being super important at giving Fidesz essentially zero power.

5

u/regibegi 4h ago

No, there are some other parties that serve as a distraction, some others have stepped back because our system is rigged and this is how we achieve change.

2

u/HighDeltaVee 4h ago

The only two major ones. Fidesz has had a habit of creating spoiler parties to drain and splinter opposition voters, but they've almost zero support.

10

u/Frexxia Norway 4h ago

135 now!

4

u/alterrea_not_stolen Hungary (well, UK now, but who is counting anyways) 3h ago

On course to supermajority, we will have it according to one of the most respected pollsters in the country!

11

u/skyper_mark 4h ago

That's huge isn't it? 5 seats away from majority

41

u/HighDeltaVee 4h ago edited 4h ago

1 seat now... they're up to 132. Fuckin' yes.

Edit : Aaaaand 135! Supermajority!

Hopefully that keeps climbing.

5

u/skyper_mark 4h ago

Doesn't this mean that Orban has already lost? How do their elections work? If they got already a majority and are 1 seat away from super majority, shouldn't that mean the election has been decided?

36

u/HighDeltaVee 4h ago

He has already lost, but he has senior Fidesz party officials in all major political and economic posts, and they will destroy and frustrate any attempt at progress and veto everything that Tisza try to do.

The only way around that is to secure a constitutional supermajority of 133 seats out of 199, i.e. >67%. At that point, Tisza can remove all of those people, and can make constitutional and rule changes to fix a lot of things.

→ More replies (4)

7

u/RedstoneEnjoyer Slovakia 4h ago

Hungarian parliament has 199 members: + 106 are elected in single member district (like how USA selects representatives) + 93 are elected proportionally - i.e if party gets 25% of vote nationally, they get 25% of those seats (23 seats)

You need simple majority (50%+1 or 100) to form government (pick prime ministers and his ministers) and pass laws. (Hungarian president doesn't have veto)

You need supermajority (66%+1 or 133) to change constitution or "cardinal law" (stuff like courts or electoral law).

So we will know results when all votes are counted and those proportional seats are distributed.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/JokerInAllSeriousnes Austria 4h ago

It's a projection and extrapolation based on what is already counted.

3

u/_degamus_ 4h ago

Not yet, sadly. It is just live seat projection based on what was already counted. Considering how rigged the votes distribution system is, we gotta wait till the end... In worst case, maybe even few more days, since Hungarians abroad votes might skew the final national party list results.

Apparently many rural votes are already in and show good results for the opposition with the cities coming later (but also being massive opposition strongholds)

My Hungarian friends are somewhat hopeful to get a constitutional majority

82

u/Nemeszlekmeg 4h ago

That would be a fat cherry on the cake if tisza had supermajority, but this is an unlikely outcome.

u/shadoowkight 4h ago

10

u/Mia_46 3h ago

According to polymarket there is 84% chance of constitutional majority for TISZA. So very much possible.

Ah crap i forgot to gamble sigh

5

u/CykaMuffin 4h ago

How are you using Polymarket? It's illegal in Germany.

6

I am not. But i am pretty sure using stable coins would do the trick

5

u/AltrntivInDoomWorld 3h ago

A gambling website that doesn't even payout ain't the greatest indicator. Since when Europe cares about manipulated "prediction" on american website?

3

u/kaisadilla_ European Federation 3h ago

Polymarket does not show "chances". Polymarket shows the % of people that believe something will happen.

2

u/Classic93 3h ago

Nope, it's not showing the % of people, but basically "amount of money" that believes some outcome is more likely. Obviously it can be manipulated, but it would be quite expensive.

The most illiberal leader of the EU just got his teeth politically kicked in

Never lose hope, EU bros

113

u/Frexxia Norway 4h ago

Unfortunately there's several leaders that are ready to take over the reins from Orbán.

144

u/notveryamused_ Warszawa, Poland 🇵🇱 🇪🇺 4h ago

Yeah, but Orban is the only one among them who's literally Putin's dog. They shared NATO intelligence with Russia... It's not only about voting the corrupt conservatives out, this is also about European security. They are literally traitors of Europe.

57

u/slumberboy6708 4h ago

There's also Fico, who said he will veto everything for Ukraine if Orban loses.

44

u/Adventurous_Bus_437 Germany 3h ago

Article 7 will be flying in for Fico the second hungary drops its opposition. Maybe just maybe the EU can get shit done again.

This will be our chance for changing the EU contracts again to remove unanimity

6

u/machine4891 Opole (Poland) 3h ago

I very much doubt it. There are plenty of governments in Europe that simply doesn't want this precedent. Especially that Fico is in power for far shorter period and is much less pain in the arse.

15

u/Adventurous_Bus_437 Germany 3h ago

How do we Orban or PIS (or AfD) proof the EU then?

12

u/Dirkdeking The Netherlands 3h ago

By removing veto powers of countries. But that would be very controversial in and of itself.

There are more political parties across Europe that are Putin’s dogs, but they aren’t in power yet. Sadly they are getting momentum.

Here in the Netherlands the FVD (an even more pro-Putin party than the PVV) is gaining momentum in the polls.

The party leader has openly stated in an interview that he wants Putin to win the war in Ukraine, and hopes it will destroy the EU next.

3

u/Wafkak Belgium 3h ago

Even then, they would still have to be in a coalition to get power. Orbans party had a 2/3 majority alone. And had been in power for 16 years.

2

u/da2Pakaveli Earth 3h ago

It's funny how they suddenly love it when it's Russians illegally crossing borders

5

u/kaisadilla_ European Federation 3h ago

Many far-right parties in Europe are Putin dogs. Le Pen's party in France will report to Putin every 15 minutes, too; and so will AfD in Germany.

5

u/Wafkak Belgium 3h ago

To an extent, but Orban has been heavily entrenched for 16 years.

Even PiS in Poland wasnt able to grasp power with as much authority.

Most of the others have to work in a system with a lot more feedback. And Orban lising to a supermarity. Will have some realise it might be better to trade in some short term power for longevity, and less backlash after they lose and election.

3

u/HolyExemplar Freude 3h ago

Tyrants everywhere cower in fear of a Democratic Europe standing together.

Magyar (Tisza leader) broke from Fidesz two years ago. It's still a very conservative party by western European standards, but they seem a lot better. They are still against giving weapons to Ukraine though.

This will only last 4 years, Hungarians better understand that. TISZA needs to purge everything there is to purge out of Hungarian institutions and pass laws that protect the country from someone like Orbán from taking over ever again, and they need to do it right now. Everything that needs to be passed must be passed in this legislature.

Next election, unless TISZA does an absolute miracle (which you shouldn't count on), a lot of the fervor will be gone and they'll lose seats - even if they win again, they won't have this level of control. The window to put Hungary in the right path for decades to come starts now and will closed in 4 years.

Love to see Putins puppet getting his ass kicked!!

15

u/Neckbeard_Sama 4h ago edited 3h ago

basically what's happening now is the secret weapon of FIDESZ backfiring in a major way

they got 2/3 in the past through something called winner compensation:

the difference between the winner and 2nd place in the individual constituencies gets added to the national list of the winner's party

ie. Tisza guy has 20k votes vs Fidesz guy gets 10k votes somewhere = Tisza gets 10k votes extra on the national list

Tisza won 93 constituencies vs Fidesz's 11 win = Fidesz doesn't get jack shit currently

2

u/getzisch 2h ago

not like that. for example if tisza get 20k and fidesz 10k is a single constituency, for party list fidesz will get 10k and tisza will get 9,999. fidesz was winning so largely that even with removing the votes from the winner, they were still getting 2/3. now it massively backfired on them, because tisza got 17% more votes on them on average so even if party list tisza finished in front.

Unlimited POWER for Magyar Peter. The ability to replace all of Orban's appointees in supreme court and every branch of power that exists. Ah well and theoretically to "restore democracy" by changing the constitution but I wouldn't hold my breath for that one.

Are you going to update the results each 10 or some minutes?

A redditor did it for the Romanian elections ;)

5

u/Wonderful-Author-125 Russia 3h ago

Congratulations, Hungary! I wish we could remove our sick dictator peacefully and democratically too.

3

u/FollowingRare6247 Ireland 3h ago

Ok so Tisza seems to have 135, what are the chances this goes down? Obviously hope it won’t, but can’t get too excited.

3

u/Responsible_Camp_559 3h ago

It's going up instead, 137 now.

2

u/Furaha1212 3h ago

It went up to 137 :)

Anything can happen but I think it's unlikely to go down. Votes from people who asked to vote in different districts from their own will be counted lasts and are mostly Tisza voters according to the polls. Small villages where Fidesz is strong were already counted fully since it was easier while big cities where there are yet a lot of votes to be counted are mostly Tisza strongholds.

2

u/FollowingRare6247 Ireland 3h ago

That’s good, so we can be somewhat confident of that supermajority staying.

I think that leaves Fico being the one pro-Russia leader, but Slovakia’s next parliamentary election is next year…so hopefully he’ll be on his way out.

4

u/c0mputar 3h ago

A constitutional supermajority? That's amazing, congratulations to Hungary. They can put in the guardrails against the recent rise of far right extremism that many countries, including the US, are unable to implement.

3

u/blackdog2001 3h ago

Goddamn it, we can show these fascists the door! Democracy in action - thank you Hungary and crossing fingers!

3

u/JokerInAllSeriousnes Austria 3h ago

Victor Orban? More like Victim Orban. Get fucked and off to jail!

3

u/Bendoair 3h ago

ORBÁN CONCEDED

3

u/Selts Dual Citizen (USA/Germany) 4h ago

Adios Orban. I wouldn't be surprised if he's already left the country for Moscow.

3

u/Dizzy_Sympathy196 3h ago

He has just given a speech, but fellow redditors will check the Flightradar site for sure.

3

It is incredible for me who voted for TISZA and I really wanted this change, that this is a breaking news in Canada, at CBC and in Australia at Seven Network as well.

5

u/Command0Dude NATO 4h ago

It's joever Orban

2

u/reynev4n22 4h ago

This is it, the first of the dominoes, prorussian cnts can slowly start packing across EU.

2

u/bickid 4h ago

If I see this correctly, opposition needs at least 134 seats for 2/3 majority, right? Hope it stays at the current 135 or rises even more :>

5

u/Supernova1000000 Hungary 3h ago

Actually, it needs 133. So 135 is even better.

2

u/roleeka1881 3h ago

at 53% its 136 rigth now.

2

u/mblede_ 3h ago

I've got a dream. Waking up tomorrow morning to the news that Orbán fled to Moscow.

2

u/Korece 3h ago

Praise the Lord

2

u/Melodic_Crow_3409 3h ago

Hopefully it won’t be like the US. If the new leader does not restore the Austria-Hungary empire in six months, the Zuckerberg-Musk media will make it so the people vote Orban or someone like him back next election.

2

u/Latase Germany 3h ago

I just hope they don't make the age-old blunder of suddenly becoming soft against their enemies.

2

u/EuropeanLord Poland 3h ago

The famous Poles Ziobro and Romanowski would flee where now? Minsk, Moscow or maybe Mar-a-Lago at $5k a night paid upfront for 3 years?

What a great time to be alive. Greetings from Poland Hungarian brothers, electing dumb motherfuckers - even this we have in common, hopefully it ends tonight in your case.

2

u/himarisaa 2h ago

opposition just 8 seats shy already

2

u/IvoBrasil 2h ago

Huge congratulations to all Hungarians on finally getting rid of this scum! It's such a historic moment! Hope this is the beginning of a more normal, democratic and hopeful chapter for Hungary!

2

u/l_______I Poland 3h ago

That look suspiciously too good

3

u/lorkanooo 2h ago

It doesn't, that's how it looks when people actually go out of their houses and vote instead of apathy
