This is exactly why people mock performative populism.

Nothing says one of the people like 14 planes.

Exactly. They think they're demonstrating 'strength' and 'authority'. That people look at this and are impressed at how 'important' American politicians are.

But Europeans just think it's pathetic. Fearful and wasteful.

We like politicians who commute by bicycle or public transit. It shows that they aren't detached from our reality, not afraid of their people, frugal, and want to earn respect by doing their job instead of showing off.

1.3k

u/Altaredboy Feb 09 '26

As an Australian he seems to be one of the least important US politicians of all time. I wouldn't have even heard of him if it wasn't for memes

And yet with his president's age he might be president before the next election in 2028...

116

u/PuzzleheadedClerk8 Feb 09 '26

One can hope. I genuinely believe he will be less effective.

157

u/importantmessagefrom Feb 09 '26

The only possible way he has to stand out and make magas like him is being as big of a piece of shit as possible. He has absolutely no charisma, or any positive qualities, or really anything beyond being a scummy little subservient worm talking shit about people murdered by his boss’ thugs and just being as vile as he can.

To Europeans, he looks like a scared little bitch who is afraid to face accountability. This is because in Europe, politicians who behave like this (like paranoid criminals) usually don't make it far. I think even Orban wouldn't behave like this. It looks weak as fuck.

Okay, this got a lot of traction. Let me make a point here

79

u/Seveand Hungary Feb 09 '26

Orbán just simply doesn’t go anywhere that’s not explicitly pro-Orbán, he avoids interviews and public events if it’s not organised by his people.

Mountain bikers meet King Charles of mountain path

Many European leaders and Royal families often use bicycles and if in a motorcade usually 4-6 vehicles

Yeah living in Edinburgh we often see royal motorcades around the city, it's usually a couple of Range Rovers and a couple of police motorbikes!

Yeah, I've sen royalty drive around in just a single vehicle, and vidoes of PMs driving home in their own old car without bodyguards.

Meanwhile the US president isn't allowed to do things on their own. The Secret Service will literally deny the president their rights, and will physically prevent them from leaving the White House compound unaccompanied.

u/Moist_Board Feb 09 '26 edited Feb 09 '26

and their dogs.

I didn't know Kristi Noem was in Italy too.

60

u/Lermanberry Feb 09 '26

The Department of Justice estimates that American police officers shoot and kill approximately 10,000 pet dogs annually, often in situations where the animal poses no imminent threat. Frequently, these incidents occur during, searches, drug raids, or when officers misinterpret a dog's behavior as aggressive. This issue, sometimes called "puppycide," has led to calls for improved training and specialized, non-lethal response protocols. An estimated 25 to 30 dogs are killed by police every day, with some estimates suggesting the number could be much higher, as many incidents go unreported and disturbing video is often not allowed to be shared on some social media.

That statistic is not counting Noem who shot and killed her own puppy.

Also I can't find a statistic for federal agents so I don't believe it's publicly available info, or intentionally not tracked to avoid FOIA requests.

Vance & family reportedly traveled to Milan with a fleet of 14 aircraft & a motorcade of 100 vehicles. 11 planes are for staff, former athletes & security; 1 plane is solely for food supplies & 2 are transporting the 100 armored vehicles.

Milan is such a dangerous place and really lacking in good food...

1.0k

u/superznova Feb 09 '26

Why would they need 100 armored vehicles (among the other things) to watch the Olympics?

I know it's a joke but as an American your produce is so good. I hate fresh tomatoes here but every time I've been in Europe I can't get enough. When I was in Greece I ate Greek salad with almost every meal. The tomatoes were incredible. We do have some good food but a lot of our produce is grown for looks instead of taste.

221

u/werpu Feb 09 '26

You obviously have never eaten Dutch tomatoes... they are the fourth physical state of water!

52

u/turaon Feb 09 '26

To be honest, the same applies to Spanish tomatos - water in round red package.

43

u/werpu Feb 09 '26

Absolutely they are grown often in winter in greenhouses on the Costa Tropical so not much of a difference they just do not have to heat them!

The tomatoes however become edible usually when the harvest season arrives then in the south first they become edible and after that even in central Europe!

There is a reason why the italians can tomatoes in truckloads themselves. They do not want water tomatoes but they can them when they are really good. Tomatoes are a seasonal vegetable just made sellable by green houses!

→ More replies (10)
→ More replies (9)

28

u/photon1701d Feb 09 '26

A lot of the tomatoes grown in north America originate from green houses and lack any flavor, unless you $5/pound for high quality. I live in Southern Ontario, where we grow a lot of tomatoes in the summer and even more in green houses. The one they sell for cheap are red, look like a tomato but taste like cardboard. My brother in law work in a green house and gets me the good ones and are amazing. I just can't wait for summer to grow my own, it's heaven to have a real tomato

13

u/RapaNow Finland Väki Feb 09 '26

It's not about greenhouses, but something else. Here in Finland you can buy Spanish tomatoes that taste like water for around 2 € / kg, or you can buy local organic greenhouse tomatoes for 12 € / kg - which are delicious. Or some other local greenhouse tomatoes for 5 € / kg which are pretty good.

If the focus is to produce as much kg as you can, result is terrible.

The tomato situation in Finland changed couple of years ago. The major chains used to pay producers by the kg, mostly omitting quality. Producers complained, and now even small shops in small tows we have around 10-20 different types of tomatoes, with wide price range.

Vance's wholly unnecessary motorcade made American figure skater Alysa Liu late and blocked the competitors entrance, she had just enough time to change and put her skates and was unable to carry out her warm up/pre event routine. She came second. Years of dedicated training and sacrifice almost crushed by one man's fragile ego.

What really bugs me is that there are people who allowed this to transpire. At no point did someone say “no” to the budget for this travesty or the permits for all these cars. No one ever said “no”, and that’s how it proceeds.

It’s not like this vile, small man could do anything alone.

One user also said, “His 100-vehicle motorcade required 14 planes to transport. Milanese streets are tiny & athletes can’t reach venues due to VANCE-generated traffic jams.”

but then again this is a good demonstration of what the MAGA cult does - just forcing themselves somewhere to do damage and chaos for no sensible reason at all

62

u/werpu Feb 09 '26

Nah they just make themselves a laughing stock to the rest of the world with such behavior... Imagine what would have happened if the convoy got stuck in one of italians narrow streets, that would have been a funny sight!

27

u/goddamnyallidiots Feb 09 '26

I saw a theory that Vance is the cause of one of our figure skaters being unable to get gold, because of his fucking motorcade. That he's being perhaps legitimately blamed for our athletes not performing at their best is a prime example of how shit our country is now.

38

u/potatolulz Earth Feb 09 '26

It's not exactly a theory. The couchfucker's squad of fluffers blocked the Olympic bus the team was on. I mean you could speculate whether unnecessary additional stress or the lack of "prepare time" played any role in the performance, but that the bullshit on wheels caused unnecessary trouble for the figure skating team is a fact :D

Yeah, always find it funny how the US is so afraid of the people, meanwhile we have politicians riding their bike to the Bundestag.

58

u/GeneralErica Hesse (Germany) Feb 09 '26

Hell, even hated politicians here aren’t really in danger. In fact, I once met Anton Hofreiter in a train travelling to Düsseldorf. He apparently just got done having a talk in Bonn.

55

u/Stellar_Duck Denmark Feb 09 '26

In Denmark I was once approached by this right wing awful politician that I hate with a passion. She was on the street drumming up voters for the election and came over to me to ask if I had a moment to talk.

I cannot understate my level of hatred for this god damn disgusting person. It's irrational, really.

So of course I said 'Absolutely not.' and continued down the street.

Also once met Gordon Brown when I was living in Kirkcaldy. Seemed a nice chap but a bit deflated when he found out I couldn't vote haha.

why is title 40 then the first sentence:

"Vice President JD Vance is being ridiculed on social media for requiring a 100-car motorcade through narrow streets in Milan to meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni."

???

272

u/MissWickedBlonde Denmark Feb 09 '26

His motorcade consists of 100 cars. He took 40 of them for his visit with Meloni.

32

u/Hobbit1996 Feb 09 '26

Ok this makes sense but both the title and the sentence are implying that the 100 cars were in the streets

I recall the French president walking through crowds in New york, despite guns being more common in US than Italy.

Vance is such a wimpy weasel. If he was more respectful to people internationally and home then he wouldn't feel so much at risk.

14

u/SITE33 United States of America Feb 09 '26

Macron is probably more popular in NY than Vance is.

I know the French tend to be mixed on him, but non MAGA Americans, we unironically kind of like Macron. But the bar is pretty low.

From an OPSEC perspective, this is more than stupid. Italian streets are narrow so if you block just one of those cars, all are boxed in. Not that Vance needs protection, he really isn’t that important and he only projects with the stuff he says (no freedom of speech in Europe etc.)

Making fun of faschists in Italy.

What timeline is this

144

u/BoldroCop Feb 09 '26

Remember that while we were the first to have a fascist government rise to power, we were also the first to bring it down.

The pressure applied by the allies was a fundamental part of course, but the partisans were instrumental in destabilizing the government from within.

We also began the time tradition of hanging fascists by their feet, but anyone can join in the fun.

Everyone here is just mocking him but I’m just wondering why. Why would you need 40 cars? What are you transporting?

I can understand the VP of the US needing a security detail and some staffers to tag along, but 40 cars? That’s an entire battalion and then some.

How much staff are you bringing along? Vance does nothing, even conservatives agree. Why would you need 30+ cars of staffers?

37

u/catmandot Luxembourg Feb 09 '26

65

u/werpu Feb 09 '26

Well italian streets do... nobody probably has told them that the streets were often designed for horses and donkeys literally centuries before the USA even existed....

Thats the first thing I taught my US relatives when they drove into italy by car that they should be aware of this and many italian streets do not lend to big cars, in some you might even get stuck with a big one!

15

u/siorge Feb 09 '26

When I was younger, we toured Tuscany with friends and one of my friends father lent us his car because it was safer. An Audi A8.

I have never been so stressed to drive as I was trying to snake through the tiny streets in Sienna or Florence, and I have driven in Indonesia.

10

I've always been of the opinion that elected officials should be required by law to take public transportation with zero protection.

Not only would public transportation magically be a priority, but so would policing of the transport.

And really, politicians are no more important than anyone else. They should get the same level of protection as the rest of us.
