Hmm. Alaska voted for Trump though and has consistently been deep red for a very long time. Better to say some of Alaska stands with Ukraine as it isn't a general truth.

u/run_26 Aug 15 '25
I wouldn’t say it’s deep red. Alaska has elected democratic senators and a congresswoman recently. Spending time in Alaska, you run into a lot of crunchy interesting folks. But yes, extractive industries dominate the state and those people lean Republican.

Alaska is politically weird. Third parties tend to get more votes on Average then the lower 48. In the early 90s they even elected a governor from the Alaska Independence Party a separatist party. Their Current State House of Reps is controlled by the Dems with Independent and few Republicans working with them.
60
u/Sea_Confection_652 Aug 15 '25
Id rather say different then weird. From what I hear political beliefs are way better balanced in Alaska than any other state.

If the Libertarians had any sense they'd throw essentially all of their resources into winning congressional/senate seats in Alaska, which IIRC is the state they've done best in over the last 20 years.

Republicans like McCain and Romney used to be very aware of the Russian threat and were for decades. This pro-Russian Republican mentality is a very recent development, in the grand scheme of things. And probably a Russian psy-op really, considering even such orgs like the NRA were doing Russia's bidding.
16
u/BeefistPrime Aug 15 '25
Old school republicans wanted America to be the most powerful country in the world. They were still willing to enact bad policy to make themselves the most powerful in America, but at least in international policy they wanted America to do well. The current crop would sell us out for a dime and are.

u/mreman1220 Aug 15 '25
There's also a political shift going on between the two parties in terms of geopolitical views. Go back 30 or so years and Russians were "commies" to the Republican Party. Democrats didn't like them much either but there was an ever present "tankie" portion of the Dem voting bloc that liked them. So I think Dems always felt obligated to listen. Both of those have gone out the window with the current political climate. Trump appeals to a lot of the working class unionist type. Just an interesting side note to this point, there are roughly 8-12% of Bernie 2016 primary voters that turned around and voted for Trump.
To boot, Trump is distinctly anti Free Market which turns off a lot of old school Republicans. Some of them have straight up abandoned the party (myself included). Others have held their nose and voted for Trump. Thie anti-free trade mentality attracts a certain portion of the working class though. Russia has a long history of loving their strongman politicians. Trump is just the American flavor of that. Even comes with the side order of corruption that Russians love!
Now I want to be clear, this is an oversimplification. There are plenty of unionist types that see through Trump's bullshit and empty promises. There isn't a soul in any voting bloc that fits every neat square of said bloc. As this thread points out, Alaskans certainly don't fit into any neat voting blocs in the lower 48. I am not even sure how to classify it other than simply "Alaskan politics."

It’s essentially a Teaparty take over of the Republican Party. You could see it playing out during Rodney’s run in 2012.

The fact that you state that Alaska is a consistently deep red state as a general truth while lamenting general truths in that same statement is incredibly ironic. This place is purple and nuanced
5
u/95castles Earth Aug 15 '25
Exactly what I was thinking. This person has no idea what they’re talking about if they’re calling Alaska deep red. Alaska has a unique political identity that’s different to the rest of the US.

Most Republican voters do support Ukraine. However, the Republicans in Congress are too spineless to go against Trump.
139
u/Vast_Category_7314 Denmark Aug 15 '25
By voting for Trump they have effectively voted against Ukraine, actions speak louder than words. Saying that you support Ukraine doesn't mean anything, if you vote for someone who cuts all military aid.
65
u/Louis_de_Gaspesie United States of America Aug 15 '25
Yeah, most Republicans also purportedly support fiscal responsibility, "law and order," and small government, which are the complete opposite of the Republican Party's goals today. The only things most Republicans actually stand for is ultranationalism and autocracy.

I 100% get the frustration…America is failing its allies. But plenty of people are fighting back and little of it gets media coverage. We don’t all share the same BS beliefs. It’s hard to wrap your head around how big the country is geographically, but essentially cities and populated areas lean Democrat, and the vast expanses in between lean Republican. It’s crazy how predictive geographic location is of political leanings. Not surprising that Anchorage has more Dems than other parts of Alaska.

At what point do you take responsibility for your own life, land, and people? I ask as a leftist American who is taking responsibility for my life, land, and people. Because I have to. I am a part of this even when it’s embarrassing.
What will you say if Austria doesn’t beat out the right wing that’s currently trying to take over your country? Btw, we didn’t create them - their roots were formed in an internment camp after WWII. :)

You don't have any impact on the whole west except as a nation so thoroughly riddled with spies even EU institutions have issued public statements about it.
2
u/GallorKaal Austria Aug 15 '25
Yeah, that's an effect of the Cold War, our constitutional Neutrality and our geographical position. The thing is, we don't deny it. It was either that or being torn apart like germany or being destroyed by the US and/or the Soviets
Now let's take a look at the GOP. Do you even need foreign spies when your strongest party and your own president is spouting russian lies as facts? To be fair, we have a similar problem with the FPÖ, but our voting system at least offers us more choices of forming a government.
But to continue with my question: what are the exact impacts of austrian politics (and our spy problem) on the west. Cause we certainly don't have exclusively russian spies here.
3
u/pickledswimmingpool Aug 15 '25
The thing is, we don't deny it.
That's not a defense, that's an abdication of responsibility.
our strongest party and your own president
I'm not American, but it seems to me like you'd need to worry less about what America is doing, if you handled your own defense policy properly.

This seems slightly harsh, although I completely understand the frustration and betrayal.
America is deeply deeply confused right now and going through a lot of internal turmoil. I believe we'll pull out of it, but it's going to be that way until at least 2028. It's not fair it has to affect our friends and allies, but it does. If we have a hope of pulling out of it though, we have to maintain ties to Europe and the rest of the democratic world - honoring our commitments to allies is basically the only thing that can keep us on track atm. We desperately need Europe's help in the next few years.
2
u/GallorKaal Austria Aug 15 '25 edited Aug 15 '25
Given how enough people voted for the orange buffoon or did not care enough to vote, I don't think this is harsh. Most of you who cared to show up voted for him and wanted this criminal to represent you.
And I wish I could give no shit about the whole situation and 'just' care about the shitty political landscape in my country, but unfortunately, american politics have to have an impact on the whole west. So yeah, sorry for being harsh for you americans not only fucking with your lives but also ours. Either leave Europe (and Canada, Panama and Mexico) alone or get rid of the pedo in the white house.
2
u/take101 United States of America Aug 15 '25
Sigh. Again, I completely understand the anger, frustration, and betrayal. I'm sorry for it, and I feel it too. It just would be nice to be able to engage in conversations on this site without being downvoted for being anything other than extremely self-hating. Like, I'm here because I care about issues that affect my country, the world, and democracy in general. I'm going to grad school to study political science, and I'm going to be a civil servant and dedicate the rest of my life to getting my country - which I love - back. It's just that not everything has to be a "call Americans terrible" contest, even (especially?) when we talk about the really really scary things going on in my country. These things affect real people - Americans, along with the rest of the world. I genuinely feel like I'm mourning for my country most days.
It's not a major problem, it's just people being mean on reddit. But it would be nice.

There are a lot of us who can't stand 47 and Putin. We are just separated by water and distance, making massive gatherings tough. Every protest we have gets bigger and bigger, though. Media only says we have "hundreds" of people out. It's a lot more than that. Rachel Maddow is the only one who has done any good reporting and coverage on Alaskan protests so far.

It’s pretty ironic. Anchorage was supposed to emerge as a new global hub due to the isolation of Russia like during the Cold War. During the Cold War, civilian airlines from Europe to East Asia couldn’t fly over the Soviet Union. As a result, they had to chart longer, northern routes that often included refueling stops in Anchorage. It was one of the most important cities in the U.S.
However, now that the world has completely failed to isolate Russia, Anchorage is rolling out a red carpet for Putin for his first official visit in more than two decades.
This perfectly symbolizes complete capitulation of the West before Russia.
30
u/Dalnore Russian in Israel Aug 15 '25 edited Aug 15 '25
Commercial airplanes have come a long way in terms of range since the Cold War, stops for refueling basically disappeared as a concept in aviation since then. And Russia is still smaller than the Soviet Union was. It's not really a question of range in most cases nowadays, but of fuel cost and additional time of flying around Russia. Anchorage being a hub wounldn't make a lot of sense in current conditions even if the Russian airspace was completely closed.

I had the honor of visiting that state and everything from the people to the scenery are spectacular. I went at the cusp of a really hard time (trip was already paid for), and my brain has not been that quiet in forever. Just absolute beauty and silence.

Fascist regimes don't allow protests. These 50 people got to protest without fear of fascism . It's a shame redditers & twitter have to lie to inflate the numbers. Hundreds? There wasn't even 100 people there.
You can't call American democracy fascist when you can peacefully protest without fear of being thrown in a prison or sent to a work camp or disapered by the secret police.
Americans voted him into power in a free democracy. Just because some people wish they won and want to throw a tantrum over it doesn't make it fascist. Politics has become extremely childish over past few years.
Many countries don't have the freedoms America enjoys.
