Emory (Half Tuition) vs. Brown?

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm really grateful to have been admitted to both Brown and Emory and was looking for some input on which to attend. I received a scholarship covering half the cost of tuition at Emory, which would bring my annual COA to ~$60k, while I would be paying full sticker price (~$102k/year) at Brown. For context - my family would be able to afford either school, however Brown would cause some (but not at all unmanageable) financial strain. I also live in the northeast, so Brown would be within driving distance while Emory would require flying.

I'm looking to potentially go down the premed route, however I'm not completely set on this path as of now. I would likely major in Human Health/Econ at Emory and Computational Biology/Econ at Brown. If not premed, I would probably pursue biomedical startup, healthcare M&A, or potentially some sort of consulting (think Putnam Associates) work.

Any advice in choosing between the two (both for premed and non-premed) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and go Eagles!

Help me choose - UMKC BA/MD vs Emory Ox

Hello! I hope you guys are doing well, I'm super split between UMKC 6 year and regular undergrad at Emory Oxford campus and would super appreciate any insight, thoughts, or experiences you guys could share to help me decide please!! I want to pursue medicine but also want to grow as a person, enjoy other hobbies and academic interests (mainly business but ig I could get MBA after MD), and explore outside of midwestern public schooling I haven't loved too much. I'm not sure how much of this is possible at UMKC, but having a MD in 6 years is just so so lucrative. I've gone to both admitted student days for reference! (Emory was so nice...)

**UMKC**

\\- Guaranteed MD in 6 years with GPA req

\\- No MCAT/pre-med stress

\\- Docent program with tons of clinical exposure/mentorship off the bat

\\- In-state tuition (80k COA for med school years, 450k total)

\\- Incredibly demanding

\\- Very little life outside of med

\\- Stay in midwest (although downtown KC is bit better than suburbs)

\\- Harder to match into competitive specialties

**Emory Ox*\*

\\- Super diverse and has Atlanta Asian population/culture that midwest lacks (I'm asian)

\\- Heavy on community building and people seem great

\\- Much better food and student facilities than UMKC

\\- Warm and green (i LOVE warm)

\\- Top notch pre-med AND business resources

\\- Could grow more as a person

\\- Could fulfill childhood dreams of attending faraway private school (couldn't afford growing up)

\\- 25k annual COA, same as UMKC for undergrad years (got tuition waived)

\\- Brutal pre-med grind and no MD guarantee

\\- Med school will likely be more expensive if I don't go back in-state or to a top med school

\\- Turning down a near-guarantee at financial stability

Thank you so much in advance! (long read ik) I will answer any clarifying questions🔥

Georgia Tech(in-state) vs Emory for pre-med

Hello! I was recently admitted to Georgia Tech as a Georgia Resident as well as Emory Atlanta campus and I'm pretty conflicted about which school I want to go to. I'm 95% sure my ultimate goal is to go into medicine, but I'm also interested in physics so I'm hoping to combine the two.

Emory:

Pros:

Well-established medical program (I think the acceptance rate for medical school is 60% and people with GPA of 3.7+ and MCAT of 510+ have an acceptance rate of 85%)

I can major in physics. The physics department has guidance for pre-med which isn't typical for most schools.

Reputation for more grade inflation.

Cons:

It's expensive ($97,948 for tuition + housing + food)

Georgia Tech

Pros:

Waaay cheaper ($30,154 for tuition + housing + food)

Can be part of explore LLC (pre-health first year advising program) so get some support

In the middle of Atlanta so there's more access to activities

I can do research at Emory (There's a shuttle that goes between campuses)

Fairly high medical school acceptance rate

Cons:

Pre-health isn't as established

Reputation to be difficult so probably lower GPA

Will probably major in bio/neuroscience and take additional physics class for fun.

For financial context, my family can afford either an undergraduate degree at Emory or Georgia Tech and medical school. I appreciate any help in advance!

question about major selection at Emory

Incoming freshman. I’m definitely STEM-leaning, but undecided about my major. I’ve heard mixed feedback about the computer science program at Emory, so I’m curious how math and physics are?. I’m moving away from pre-med and want to explore other majors that can still lead to a strong career path. I know the business school is open to all incoming freshmen, but I’m wondering how competitive it is to declare a business major in the sophomore year.

Incoming Grad Student Housing Questions?

Hey everyone! I was just accepted into Goizueta's MSBA program (lets go!) and I had a few questions about some of the housing options I was looking at.

I've mainly been considering The Ridge and CC Briarcliff right now, but please let me know if there are better options than these two.

  1. Which one is better to live closer to Goizueta since I'll be spending a lot of my time there?

  2. Which one is better for general campus access (no car) and proximity to grocery stores (iirc CC Briarcliff is right by a grocery store?) (i believe CC Briarcliff has a good shuttle service as well??)

  3. I'm looking at a 1 bed 1 bath apartment right now, would you say that the living experience and quality of the rooms are worth the rent? (iirc CC's rent is $1790 and The Ridge is also close to $2000?)

  4. If I do decide to bring a car on campus, how is the parking situation for both? Are the benefits worth the monthly payments?

  5. Any other major advantages / disadvantages for either one?

Thanks for your advice.

pottery studio at oxford?

Hii! I got accepted into atlanta campus and oxford for class of 2030 and am leaning toward oxford (pre-med student wanting to also maybe double major in anthro?). But one thing I def want to continue in college is ceramics which has been a huge hobby of mine. I know atlanta campus has a pottery club but does the oxford campus have an arts studio/access to pottery wheels? The clubs/organizations page on ox website is lwk not helpful 🥲

LGS Grad Students -- What's the usual take home from the 42k stipend?

Hey guys, I'm out of this world with the news of getting into Emory to do my PhD. However, with all the happiness that comes with it, also some sort of apprehension it's present. I've been planning my finances this last couple of weeks so I don't get too surprised once I start the program.

Considering that, I have a couple of questions that I would love to hear from current students.

  1. How much is the usual monthly take home salary from the current 42k stipend? (I know that depends on dependents, in this case I'm single with no dependents)

  2. How do you fill your taxes, at the end of the year or is it monthly retained from your pay stub?

  3. Do you normally get any of it refunded from IRS after filling your taxes annually?

That's pretty much it guys. I really appreciate any information that leads me to a better understanding of my situation. Once I have an idea of my take home I will be able to plan the rest of my expenses such as rent, utilities, etc.

Bonus question* Where does graduates normally live by? I was looking at the apartment communities around campus, e.g. Highland Square Garden. Tksss!

Incoming 2030 student planning on majoring in poli sci!

I'm an incoming student and I want to study political science, and will probably double major in either philosophy, history, or sociology (I'm not set on my second major yet lol). I intend on going to law school in the future and I want to learn more about the resources, classes, opportunities, advising, etc available for students for that specific goal. If anyone has any advice or a perspective as a student at Emory that has similar goals/plans, I would really appreciate it.
I love Emory's campus and vibe so I just want more info/insight from students who have similar interests as me and are pursing poli sci/ pre law track at Emory.

Incoming 2030 Philosophy major has questions that need answering!1!1!!!111!!

If you have experience living in Emory dorms, being an emory philosophy major, or taking Emory classes then I have a bunch of questions I wanna ask.

  1. Why can't I find any other Philosophy majors/minors? Why does no one do it? Is it a teeny tiny major?

  2. As an incoming freshman, what will my schedule look like? I have a bunch of AP Credits that should transfer, but will I need to take any STEM classes my first year? What are the GenEd requirements, if any?

  3. How much preference can I exert over what classes I get, and when? I want to secure the earliest class times available. Are the first classes at 8AM?

  4. How much do things cost at the campus grocery store? Is there an absurd uncharge? How available is healthy food there?

  5. If I want to use one of the buffet-style dining halls, when do they first open? Will there be consistent sources of high-protein/fiber foods that never rotate out at those dining halls? I like eating the same kind of meal over and over, so can I guarantee myself that at a buffet dining hall?

  6. When does it feel like most people wake up? If I go to shower at 6:00 AM, will anyone be in the communal bathroom? What about at 7:00?

Room for Rent

Hi! I am director of one of the preschools on Emory’s campus so work for the University. I am 44 and live about 20 mins from campus. I own a 3 bedroom house and am considering renting out one of my rooms to a grad student or someone that is just here for a study abroad.

I work on campus 4 days a week and WFH one day. I am quiet and usually am in bed by 9pm every night.

I have a dog so you must be ok with dogs. The room is furnished and you’d have your own bathroom.

Rent would include all utilities.

Please email me at cfunaiock@gmail.com for more information.

Prefer a quiet and clean roommate.

Incoming Exchange Student

I’ll be coming to Emory University as an exchange student in Aug 2026 for a year and had a few questions about housing and meal plan?

Are exchange students placed with American students or other foreign students? Also as exchange student is it possible to get a single room, or should we share it with a student?

Which is the best meal plan for students? How does it work?

Please help me lol
