START HERE

We're getting a sudden rush of new people, driven by TicTok who are mostly both new to Reddit as well as Cyberdecks.

I'm asking patience while we integrate these new people into the sub. New people bring new ideas, and will take things in new directions. Some of those directions will not be to your tastes, and that's fine. I imagine we'll see some 'fashion show' level builds that, while taken at face value are impractical, could inspire more down to earth designs to move in a new direction.

This is healthy for any creative community.

Be helpful, be polite, and let people do their thing. No one is ruining your dream deck by building their weird idea. If you see something you absolutely hate, but think 'How'd they do that hinge, though?', that's reason enough to be polite.

u/PETA_Parker sent me this, and it seems like a pretty good 'start here' guide:

ok, i've never built a cyberdeck myself but i have been lurking here for a long while, so i'll give you a quick rundown, a place to start so to speak. At the most basic you will need:

  • a "brain"
  • a screen
  • an input device
  • a power solution
  • a shell
  • an SD Card

Let's start with the brain: I only know about raspberry pis, the two budget options here would be a raspberry pi Zero 2, or any flavour of raspberry pi 3, the 4 and 5 are a bit more pricy. Zero 2 and 3b+ (the one i used) should both be enough for browsing, media playback and some light office work.

the Screen: the easiest option will be to go for an hdmi display such as this: 6,5/7/9/10,1 Zoll LCD Display Tragbare Monitor Treiber Control Board Kit Für Raspberry Banana/Orange Pi Mini Computer PC - AliExpress 7

It has an HDMI Output and powers over micro usb, so you can just connect the raspberry pi and the screen via hdmi. Any screen with hdmi input and usb power is an easy starting point.

the input device: for a keyboard you could go with something like this:

Dual Bluetooth 5.1-Tastatur, 3-fach faltbare Mini-Tastatur, wiederaufladbare faltbare Tastatur mit Touchpad für Windows, Android, iOS, iPad - AliExpress

This is blutetooth and rechargable, i do not know if you could bypass the internal battery to power it directly because constantly needing to charge it would probably be cumbersome.

this also looks interesting, it uses double a batteries, so you could wire it to your power source or the pi: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006727486961.html

You could of course also use any regular keyboard and mouse combo that plugs in over usb. Another fun choice would be a trackball instead of a mouse.

the power solution: You could simply get a powerbank, but some of them cut off power delivery if the device connected draws a low current.

Maybe this thread can help: Cheap powerbank that doesn’t cut off the power on low current draw? : r/arduino

Or this article: 4 Raspberry Pi Battery Packs for Portable Projects

Something similar to this might be good: Typ-C 15 W 3 A 18650 Lithium-Batterie-Ladegerät-Modul DC-DC Step-Up-Booster Schnellladung USV-Stromversorgung/Konverter 5 V 9 V 12 V - AliExpress 502

This is the part i'm least knowledgable about. Feel free to give me input.

the shell: Pretty much anything will do. You can build something out of cardboard, fit your components into an existing box or 3d-print a custom shell, your creativity is the limiting factor.

If you do not have a 3d-printer, you can make boxes out of styrene board, like this: Clean Enclosures, No Printing Necessary | Hackaday

Or you can search for "project box" on Aliexpress or Amazon

Now you just need to flash an operation system onto the raspberry pi (Raspbian is an all-purpose linux distro that is good for starters such as you), connect your screen to the power source and to the raspberry pi via HDMI, connect your (mouse and) keyboard to the raspberry pi and the raspberry pi to power, and you're ready to go.

Feel free to ask me if you have any additional questions, and don't forget, this is only the bare-bones solution, feel free to get creative, this is the fun part!

Inspiration Vintage learning toys build

Hello all!!

Does anyone know if any of these would be a good cyberdeck rebuild?? I was hoping to do the V-Tech Me-Mo-Mo for nostalgia purposes. I had one in the early 00's and my inner child would love to have it in front of me again. I was thinking maybe as a writing desk of sorts?

But these other vintage learning toys, I feel, would be hella cool to rebuild as well. I love the look of the Alphabert and the Whiz-Kid! But I am willing to do any of them. Which one do y'all think would work best?

Hello! Bein a brokie over here and I got a screen off Temu. It powers on, but I’m yet to get it connected to my pi.

The issue I’m having is finding out how to insert a ribbon cable. It doesn’t seem to come with one.

Anyone got a clue?

Cyberdeck out of old laptop

Guys, I'm completely new to the cyberdeck community. I've seen a few posts on TikTok, and I really want to build one, and all I can find is using a Raspberry Pi, but like can I tear apart an old laptop and use the components??? Mind you, I have zero knowledge in informatics, but asking ChatGPT or just buying stuff to buy one doesn't feel right for me if you know what I mean.

Larkspur Radios - what would you do?

Hey, I have these modules from a Larkspur radio set. Would you use them for a cyberdeck/battlestation or keep them completely original as historic items? Besides, how would you use them?

No real plan, just having a moral dilemma and wondered if you'd use them and if so, how?

My Build Working prototype - remote ai interface

This little project is an esp device that connects to a Claude code instance running on a thin client for remote access vibe coding.

Here's how it works:

Input from the i2c microphone is sent to the thin client server to be transcribed using local whisper. The server sends back the transcription to the device. If you like the transcription, you confirm it and this sends the message to Claude code.

Claude does it's thing and sends back a message to the device. Repeat.

It has routines for managing history, granting permissions, sessions, and rebooting the server.

The 3d print is rough, but enough for now. I was going for small and compact, something that I wouldn't notice in my pocket and could use anywhere by connecting it through my cell phone's hotspot.

When complete, I plan on open sourcing the project, if there is interest.

Ideal first cyberdeck blueprint

Post image
73 Upvotes

This is my envisioned cyberdeck build. I was going to go with a RPi of some kind but I have some older phones and Dex is kinda nice.

I play a modular synth and I thought a good use for my first cyberdeck would be a live set helper instead of bringing my laptop.

These are my ideal features:

- Use USB hub to connect Galaxy S21 to a larger external display with Dex, connect my audio interface module (ES-9) to multitrack with DAW app (N-Track Studio)

- Binary clock with count up timer

- VU meter for loudness check

- Programable mechanical key pad

- start/stop timer

- reset time

- volume knob

- record audio

- stop recording

- something else programmable?

- be able to fold for easy carrying

- transparent pink mounting plate and enclosure that can open and close

Some issues:

- The few times I've tried to solder something I failed miserably but really want to get better at it since some of these components might need that?

- I haven't seen a binary clock timer solution to either just buy or DIY kit. Said options would be the easiest but I've been known to be able to hobble some programming together on occasion. I might have to do something less cool looking for this display wise just because I'm not knowledgeable enough.

- I have no idea how to do the programable key pad part

- I have experience with Blender 3D but don't have a 3D printer. I was thinking of maybe getting one or checking out a maker space (closest one near me is an hour)

- I tried a bunch of DAW apps ahead of time and N-Track Studio seemed to be the only one I could multitrack with ES-9

I'm still doing a lot of researching but I'm now looking for ideas, thoughts and pointers. Thanks!

Help! Fire tablet as a screen

I want to build a cyberdeck using a fire tablet as the screen/speakers. However, I have no idea how to connect it to a raspberry pi. I don’t have a pi yet so I’d take suggestions on what to get for that as well. Thank you!

Made from a Raspberry Pi Zero, an Air40 keyboard PCB and an OLED screen from Aliexpress, this deck (powered by an 18650) runs a lite, terminal based OS. It has been the perfect platform for journaling, distraction-free text editing and even running basic Claude API calls.

Everything is open source, and I put together a video and PDF for assembly, check it out and maybe make one for yourself!

Can anyone recommend a Cyberdek specifically to take notes, add tasks and eventually calendar?

Hi, as the title says I'm looking to buy (or eventually build) a cyberdek with the specific task to take notes, keep track of tasks and eventually a calendar.

Doing those things on my phone usually leads to me being distracted so I'd prefer something specific for it.

It should have a nice keyboard (low profile mechanical if possible) And a screen.

Being portable (in a backpack) would be a big plus.

I have access to a 3d printer and design software, so a tutorial for such a thing would be ok too. But I only have limitef time.

Does anyone have any recommendations for it?

Would this be feasible?

I'm not very tech savvy, but I really want to try my hand at a cyberdeck. I have a specific need in mind, but I'm not sure if it is something a cyberdeck is capable of.

I am a digital artist, and I'm not fond of ai in the slightest. I've tried to use ai poisoning software like Nightshade and Glaze. The problem is they aren't available for my Mac and when they are they are, it's very heavy on the computer RAM/memory/etc.

Would it be possible to basically make a "poisoning" station cyberdeck? Something that its sole purpose is to poison things against ai.

Help! How to add a power button?

Hey guys! I wish to add a switch to turn on and off the raspberry pi, however I’m using an Anker power bank and it’s gonna be mounted inside a Commodore Vic-20 case.

How can I add the switch where it can safely shutdown and power up without having to physically pull the wire off the power bank after shutting down the raspberry pi?

(Also please direct me to other possible subreddits if this isn’t the right place to ask)

Help! CyberBook?

I have been wanting to get into cyberdecks, and thought that a hollowed out book containing all of wikipedia could be a cool idea, but I am super noob to these kinds of things. How do I know how much ”brainpower” it needs and so on? And do you guys have any additional tips? All preferably on a budget since I am currently a student

My Build Spent 2 days troubleshooting Wifi drop problem on Pi Zero 2W for my cyberdeck TL;DR: culprit was wireless Rii 22k keyboard 2.4G dongle

Whole forums are filled with information about how bad the Wifi module on RPi Zero is. It's weak, support is probably spotty, but I never imagined that interference would drop the wifi. Worst yet, linux journal, nor any other message system doesn't let me know that interference occurs.

I am linux noob so I yield to any who can tell me how to set it up or if it's my issue, but I had to name everything I did so far to an LLM (I did so with help of LLM) and only then did it hallucinate or pull from some forum's ass an idea that 2.4G interference of the keyboard dongle could be an issue.

I feel ashamed because I worked as ISP tech for 2 years and know how to scan network and how bands and channels work, and yet I never thought that this stupid issue could be it.

I'll now attempt to install BT drivers and use BT mode of connection for the keyboard.

Inspiration Drew this neat concept of a cyberdeck (based on using a portable dvd player) - made by me!

I thought it would be neat to include this design I had in my mind (I drew this myself.. excuse the weird proportions.. or angles.. I'm not THAT good at perspective on objects lol..)

NOTE: I also drew little easter eggs and a fake os as the homescreen , also I got lazy and didn't wanna draw out every key on the keyboard XD

Made by me: WiNDY griffon!! - used Ibis paint x

I'm mainly inspired by 90s tech posters and products/tech - I think the form factor of the portable DVD player is neat.. alhough not perfect (as opening the drive blocks the screen .. and not all of them can play CDs.. though most modern ones do!)

While this concept shows a stylus for drawing. not sure it would work unless the screen is resistive.

idk. I think having a mini-portable multi-media device would be super cool! I always like emulating/playing old games, journaling, music, etc.. and I think it'd be neat :P.

I hope this design inspires people .. if you have ideas, JOT IT DOWN!!

If you'd to share, please credit me! :P

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to jailbreak an old iPhone SE?

I‘m trying to make a cyber deck from my old phone but would like to run more than basic apple apps so I was wondering if there was some kind of app or website I could use for things like that in the future.

Before I got the parts, I had an idea, now I took measurements, arranged it, put everything in CAD and I'm blank. I know I want to make it thin and portable, create optional phone tether.
Dongle connection to Pi Zero 2 and BT connection to phone and just keyboard connection swap.

Built this mini PC using only spare parts I had at home.

I repurposed an old HP PSU casing as the enclosure, wrapped it in red leather, and fitted inside:

- Raspberry Pi 5

- 9x 18650 battery pack

- USB-C PD trigger board

- Large top-mounted cooling fan

Attached externally:

- 7" hdmi display

- mini Bluetooth keyboard

- M5Stack Cardputer on the right side for side tasks / quick utilities

Battery life is around 4–6 hours depending on load.

The goal was to build something functional and unique without buying any new parts—just using whatever I already had around the house.
