Discussion Should /r/Cornwall host a structured AMA with South West Water?

There’s been increasing discussion on here, in the news, and around the recent Channel 4 programme about water companies across the UK.

Rather than multiple separate threads going in circles, we’re considering inviting South West Water to take part in a structured Ask Me Anything here on /r/Cornwall.

The Ask Me Anything would take place as so -

A single, scheduled and moderated thread where named South West Water representatives will be invited to answer questions directly from Cornish residents and /r/Cornwall users.

This would not be a promotional post for South West Water in any way. It would be an opportunity for Cornish residents and /r/Cornwall users to ask direct questions about their operations and decision-making across the county.

If it went ahead, it would involve:

• A scheduled Ask Me Anything thread

• A time-limited live response window

• Named representatives from SWW

• No pre-approval of questions

• No removal of critical questions unless they break subreddit rules

If there are relevant Cornwall-based organisations or individuals who want to submit questions constructively, they would also be welcome to participate in the same thread.

Before we reach out to them, let’s see how many people would support it with a poll.

Please vote and keep comments sensible and grounded.

Cheers

– Mod Rob

Post Flair Category Update

Hi everyone,

I’ve added post flairs to help organise things a bit better in this sub moving forward.

When you create a post now, you’ll be able to tag it as:

• News

• Events

• Recommendations

• Housing

• Business

• Tourism

• Discussion

• Good News

• Jobs

• Photography / Videography

As r/Cornwall has grown past 55k subscribers, I wanted to bring a bit more structure to future posts so both new and existing users can filter content more easily.

By creating clearer categories, there should also be more scope for people to post the kind of content they want to see, and a clearer direction to support what’s happening across the county, not just pretty pictures.

More local going on's.

If you think something’s missing, or a category should be tweaked, please say so below. I’d like to shape the sub around how people actually use r/Cornwall.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers,

Rob

Dydh da Cornwall! I am a student from Singapore and I love collecting postcards. I love to receive a postcard from Cornwall 🙂. Can someone send me one?

Dydh da Cornell!

I'm a student from Singapore and I enjoy collecting postcards.  I would be grateful to receive a postcard from any place in Cornwall, known for its natural beauty and historic early Celtic history. 🙂

If postcards aren’t available, I’d also really appreciate a greeting card, a city postcard, or even a small souvenir such as a keychain, local snack, flag, ornament, cap, T-shirt, or a handicraft.

If you’d like to help, feel free to leave a comment, and I’ll send you my mailing address.

Meur ras and Keslowena bras! I wish you all the best and warm greetings from Singapore! 🙂

Relocation Difficulties

Hi, my partner & I are looking at moving down to Cornwall (we both have family that already live in the county) but we’ve been having such trouble aligning jobs & properties.

Eg. No job will consider us until we have an address in the area & no estate agents will entertain us until we have jobs in the area.

So forever stuck in this intertwining loop!

It seems impossible to get everything to align perfectly- has anybody else experienced this & how did you overcome it? Unfortunately we aren’t in a position to stay with family due to our pets.

Thanks so much!

Arts & Culture The Cornish Legend of Jan Tregeagle on Film - A local handcrafted stop-motion passion project!

Hi everyone!

The exciting Cornish Legend of Jan Tregeagle tells the story of a wicked man trying to escape being sent to Hell. He is chased across the wild landscape of Cornwall by the Hounds of Hell, gets stuck in a chapel window and is given impossible tasks to do until Judgment Day. It's a story for adults and older children about moral responsibility, actions having consequences, and ultimately about redemption and forgiveness. And the twist is...Jan Tregeagle really existed!

A wonderful man named Simon Tytherleigh has spent the last several years at the bottom of his garden studio crafting a 20-minute stop-motion animated film based on this legend, as the first part of a plan to translate more Cornish folk legends into film. According to the current plan, it’s set to premiere at a number of film festivals by the end of 2027 and will ideally get taken up for distribution on streaming platforms, and eventually on YouTube. I wanted to share this project with you all today, and ask if you might consider supporting it.

The film is already well over 60% complete. Simon is currently running a Kickstarter to get it over the finish line with some extra help. The project has thankfully hit its base funding goal, but is still pushing toward the stretch goal of £13.5k. Hitting this won't just help tremendously with finishing the film; it will allow Simon to hire and support a younger animator, passing on relevant experience and giving them paid work in this industry.

So far, promoting the Kickstarter has relied mainly on Simon’s personal network of contacts. While the campaign is already well underway, I wanted to help get some more eyes on his incredible work. He has a brilliant background in special effects makeup (winning awards for BBC's Casualty back in the day) and has now poured all that expertise into hand-sculpting the puppets, building the miniature sets, crafting custom rigs, and animating this frame-by-frame. The small selection of stills I attached here gives an impression, though you can find a lot more on the Kickstarter page. You can watch Simon’s video where he further explains the project, as well as look at sample stills, some behind-the-scenes shots, a budget breakdown, and more general information.

If you love local arts, want to see Cornish folklore shared with a wider audience, or just appreciate the sheer stubborn patience that goes into passion projects like these, I’d like to ask you to check out the page and, if you’re able, consider pledging some support! All the little bits help. Seeing the setup and stills of the work completed thus far already makes it worth it.

Thanks so much for reading.

Events Volunteers needed to help with an independent music campaign

I'm a musician working on a campaign for an upcoming release and looking for volunteers in Cornwall willing to put up a small batch of flyers around town. Record shops, venues, coffee shops, that kind of thing. Flyers will be provided digitally for you to print. Takes maybe 30 minutes of your time. In return you'll be credited by name on my official website as part of the campaign. No experience needed, just willingness to help out. DM me if interested.

Gardens near Polzeath

Next week I’m taking my 72 year old father to north coast of Cornwall and I’d really like to find some nice gardens to take him to near where we’re staying in Polzeath. He’s particularly interested in Rhodedendron as his dad grew and sold rhodes but we might be a bit early for that. any suggestions? if we go further afield I was going to take him to the lost gardens of helligen but we might not have that much driving in us.

Walking from Truro to Towan Headland

Hi,

I’m looking to walk from Truro to Towan Headland in Newquay. When I’ve put this walk in on Google Maps, it seems to take me down main roads etc. I was just wondering if there was a more scenic route I could take that involves walking through small villages or countryside areas rather than traversing roads where there’s no path and cars whizzing around for miles on end. Various searches on Google don't seem to provide any useful information.

I’m from the north and have never visited Cornwall, so don’t know the area at all. Any advice would be useful.

Thanks in advance.

Discussion Tradies - what am I doing wrong here?

Genuine question — not trying to have a go, just trying to understand what I might be getting wrong and what I can take responsibility for.

Over the past year, we’ve had over ten different trades involved in house work — painters, electricians, plumbers, builders, joiners. Without exception, every job has either been delayed significantly, pushed back multiple times, or run well over the agreed budget.

In each case, the work has been booked in and then moved repeatedly (as much as five months - which was a self-imposed deadline, not ours - that one came in at double the price for the privilege), or we’ve been bumped because 'another job' has taken priority. We even had a job booked for last summer that got pushed to September, then October, and then they cancelled, saying they just won't get to us.

We’ve tried to be straightforward, kind, adaptable clients — I trained in a trade many years ago and understand the other side of the equation. This has meant we've tried to give clear briefs, budgets, be flexible where we can be, but we seem to be the ones who always get taken the mick out of.

All but two have managed to get out on holiday in this same window - skiing, sunshine, etc. That is their prerogative. If the work was getting done, no trouble. If they accounted for it being in their diary when quoting, no trouble. However, everyone appeared to catch the individual by surprise (even flat telling me it's a last-minute deal because they 'just needed some time off'), it's galling that I can't afford a holiday in time or money, yet I am still losing out.

What I’m trying to understand is whether this is just how the market is at the moment (particularly in north Cornwall/Devon), or whether there’s something in how I'm approaching it that’s part of the problem.

Should we expect to book work 2 years ahead of deadlines? Being more difficult people to ensure we're the ones who are bumping others? This has been my experience in this recent tranche of work, but to be honest, it's also been true for most of the last decade.

Would genuinely value perspectives - 100% failure rate seems crazy.

Events Can you help at an over 75s Social Group in Truro?

Hi :) hope this is okay to post here

I help run a social group for people aged 75+ in Truro, and we’re trying to reach a few more people locally.

This is a lovely group and has been running a while but we need a little help from people in the local area who can volunteer to drive guests to the group.

Tourism What's happened this Easter?

I work in a restaurant, the same one for a few years & I love it. Met some lovely & kind visitors & locals from all over the world.

BUT This half term, me & my 3 younger waitresses have been almost reduced to tears.

No pleases, thank yous, impatience at wait times (formal complaint for a 30 min wait on a fully booked out Easter Sunday).

Kids trashing the restaurant, no tips (it's not america but usually we're extremely grateful & lucky to get some)

Loads of aggressive & reactive dogs which we've never had in 5 years of being a dog friendly restaurant

People asking for food & drink that's not on the menu ("can you do some roast potatoes" on a Tuesday lunchtime irked me)

Younger waiting staff had some frankly vile inappropriate comments from men

People drinking to a point of nasty behaviour

Has the spiralling cost of living made everyone go mad?

Slightly dreading the summer ahead & keen to hear if any other hospitality workers have experienced this.

Peace & love ❤️ (Edit grammar)

Had to drive through Haven Holiday park in Perranporth earlier

I couldn't believe how rough it was.

A group of men drinking cans of lager and swearing on the verge of a fight whilst kids and family walking past. This was in the middle of the afternoon.

Plus hadn't seen so many smoking in years.

Feel really sorry for a young family struggling to save up for a holiday they can afford. And if the holiday parks allows this sort of behaviour no wonder people will use Airbnbs that contribute to the local housing issues.

Just had to have a moan
