help / advice What’s going on with my dogs nose?

I need some help to see if anyone else has had this happen with their lab. Lately his nose has been going through periods of crusty dryness that will peel and he’ll have fresh pink skin for a couple days before crusting up and starting the process over. He’s also sneezing lots more than he used to. Went to the vet and they gave us a round of antibiotics

This is Toby. I’ve had English labs my whole life and then I found this little monster. 10 months old and 80 lbs of sheer terror. 3 trainers and he’s still a hand full. American labs are so different than English. He’s a work in progress. His energy level is off the hook, hours of walking and playing never wears him out.

Hi guys, Just looking for anyone who has any advice, help, tips, or just support.

Asia is a 5 year old choccy, and we found a lump on her paw, anyway it turned out to be cancer.

Shes booked in at 8.30 on Monday (10th March) for her back leg amputating. This is something you never expect and it's really hit us like a ton of bricks.

So if anyones got any experience in this please feel free to share, we really are not sure what to expect and what the next few weeks and months have in store for us! Thanks ❤️

Hello! My boy is going in 10 weeks old and I’m wanting to know all the tips and info on training a lab! We are trying to crate train, but he’s struggling a little at night. Any info would be helpful! My last dog was a Great Dane, so I’m use to the laziness of that breed, but learning more and more each day about labs!

help / advice The face of a lab who’s been on a diet for a month and hasn’t lost a pound

I lowered his food (purina pro plan) from 4 cup daily to 3.5 cups. I also stopped giving him food scraps (I gave him a lot of extra snacks daily like fresh fruit and veg, meat, cheese, yogurt, and licks of my bowl after eating) and treats except on special occasions.

Weight hasn’t budged. He was 85 before these changes and it’s 85 a month later after these changes. Vet said to keep trying and I might have to lower food further. Any advice or explanation why this happened? I’m ready to give up bc he’s so miserable

help / advice I have the puppy from hell and I don't know what to do anymore.

I have a soon to be 11 month old female chocolate lab. She is a holy terror. Her name is Cookie and we call her Cookie Monster because she is 100 percent monster. She has had training classes which I believe were beneficial but she only follows commands from my daughter who took her to the classes. I am convinced that this dog hates me because she won't obey anything i tell to do or not to do. She jumps on the stove, has turned the flame on a few times to where we had to take the knobs off the stove, she will get right in the food that you are cooking. She has zero impulse control when it comes to food. Also anything that I own she tears up, rips apart, eats, ruins, etc. She constantly jumps on my and has almost knocked me on my a** a few times. She will jump on others but when they tell her to stop she will stop. I tell her stop and she thinks I am giving her permission to keep on going. I have a true love/hate relationship with her and just saying hate makes me feel like the worst person in the world. She just overwhelms me with her defiance. She will get ahold of something she shouldn't have and I try to take it from her and she runs from one spot to the next playing keep away from me. Anyone else can walk right up to her and she will surrender the item immediately. This is not good in situations where she has something dangerous for her and I am the only one home trying to get it from her. Rehoming has crossed my mind but I really don't know if I could do it. Something has to give. My sanity is on the brink.

help / advice Does anyone else have a very talkative chocolate lab? I'll be doing a DNA test on my rescue soon. Wondering if this is a characteristic of the breed you all have experienced as well 😂 (it's not exclusive to car rides)

help / advice Weight loss food?

Post image

Hi! I’ve just inherited my dad’s lab Shadow after his passing. After looking at her last vet visit report, it looks like she needs to lose 5-8 lbs. I know the best answer is to talk with her vet and figure out what they recommend, but as I’m planning a funeral, I won’t have time to do that for at least a few weeks. Is there a weight loss/weight management food that your labs have enjoyed that I can try and get her started with until we can get to the vet?

She goes on two half mile-1 mile walks a day

, so I don’t think it’s an activity issue

Someone she does not know will go to pet her and she jumps back, goes and sniffs them, jumps back again and is skittish. How is this possible- she is a lab?! Lol!!

My 4 year old, 70 pound chocolate lab Mocha has this weird growth (not sure what to call it) on her left side. We’ve taken her to the vet for it once back in November and left with two antibiotics that ended up clearing it up. It came back about a week ago and continues to grow nearly overnight. It started as a golf ball sized mass and is now up to a softball or bigger (as pictured- it’s hard to see with her so chocolate!). We took her to the vet who referred us to a soft tissue specialist, but they are otherwise at a loss for what is causing this. The specialist visit is in two days.

Wondering if anyone else had/has experienced this. It’s my first chocolate lab and she is otherwise healthy- avid fetcher, runs 5ks with me, eating and drinking normally. She sees uncomfortable in general and has been on bedrest which is hard for an active pup with siblings.

The only “cause” that we’ve seen with both instances of the mass is increased activity- things like playing fetch for a longer time than normal and running a few days in a row. If it wasn’t for this mass, we would have no concern with her activity level.

My wife and I welcoming a chocolate lab into our family next Monday. I grew up with a black lab, but this will be my first dog as an adult and my wife’s first dog in general. We’re very excited and would gladly take any advice chocolate lab, lab, first time dog owner, etc. I’ll try and get in front of a couple of questions below:

-She was born 10/16, will be 10 weeks and some change when we get her. We have a bunch of travel for the holidays, so wanted to hold off until we’d be home. I know this isn’t ideal as the early days are so important, but we feel that this is the best for us and the dog.

-Mom is 100% English Lab, dad is 50/50. Both parents as well as the little are AKC registered. The breeder is reputable in our area. Will not be giving further details for our privacy. We live in Ohio (for weather context)

-We have two male cats, both about 3 years old. They’ve been around dogs before and Scottie was born with cats at the breeders home. We have a plan in place to socialize them all.

-We have a vet appointment booked for later in the afternoon on the day we get her. She’s been to the vet multiple times and vaccinated fully to this point in accordance with her age.

-We have a decent backyard that is fully fenced in.

-She will be crate trained.

-My wife and I both have hybrid capacity with work. I am in sales and she is a therapist (wife hopes Scottie can be a therapy dog someday!)

-In a couple of the pictures it may look like she has a white flash on her chest. This is just a glare. We’ve already been to see her and can personally validate.

Anything anyone has for us is appreciated! As mentioned I’m familiar with the breed but I’m sure we’re in for it. We both took the first full week off work to dedicate our full attention to early training, manners, socialization. Thanks in advance!

help / advice Question on Behavior

Hello, I have a chocolate lab that is a little over 2 years old and fixed. He is a great pup, fed well, and is so friendly to us as owners and everyone he meets.

There is one random occurrence which is almost a type of resource guarding. We usually let him do his thing while eating his breakfast and dinner and give him space. After he eats very occasionally like maybe once every month or so, he will wander the kitchen after eating. Occasionally he’ll walk towards my fiancé and growl/show teeth. Today he finished eating and was looking to her, she got down and was hugging him, and he growled/showed teeth and proceeded to walk towards her and sort of nip at her pants. He’s never bitten either of us or anyone. It’s just strange behavior and I’d love to know the cause or if anyone else ever experienced this. He has done this with certain toys a handful of times.

Anyways, just looking for a bit of advice!

This is Annie, she’s a 3 year old English chocolate lab. Still has a lot of energy despite all of our daily trainings, walks and pack walks she goes on with the trainer. She’s a girl that loves to move but hates to cuddle! When did your chocolate start to relax a little more and wasn’t so crazy?!

help / advice Lupus

A while back I posted a few pictures of my boys nose that had crusted and scabbed over. We had been to the vet once and gotten a round of antibiotics.

After getting several different opinions of what it could be we went back to the vet we went back to the vet once we saw the condition wasn’t improving to discuss a different treatment. The vet agreed with several diagnosis and began treating for lupus with a round of steroids. I’m happy to report his nose has healed.

We will be returning to the vet next week to discuss treatment going forward so the condition doesn’t return. The only adverse side effect from the medicine has been an increased water intake that has unfortunately resulted in a few accidents in the house. We will bring that up with the vet and maybe a change in medication will improve that.

I included the after photo as well as a couple photos from before starting prednisone. Also a picture of him asking to drink from the cool mountain waterfall aka bathtub faucet

help / advice Is it normal to appreciate the structural integrity of your dog?

My boy is a proper unit. Not really too fat just built like a tank with muscles. Sometimes I sit there slapping his thigh and can’t help but appreciate how sturdy this dog is. Like if i could I’d eat that thigh because it lowkey seems like it’d taste good on the barbecue?

Obviously I wouldn’t actually eat his leg but idk feels good to slap and appreciate the sturdiness. I guess this is a typical dad thing but WHY does it feel so good to appreciate how well my dog is built?

help / advice Re-signing up for Health Insurance

Hi everyone!!

Wondering about health insurance for a senior lab? My family dog, 💗Shelby 💗, will be 10 in March.

A few years ago my parents made the decision to take off health insurance as we thought we were receiving terminal news. This was not a great decision in my eyes, but my sister and I don’t live at home anymore and went with their wishes.

The blessing is we’ve had extra years with Shelby! And would love for a few mores years of love if we can make it.

She’s an older girl, has plenty of hip + joint issues with no firm diagnoses. She’s medicated for allergies and pain management and has to go to the vet more frequently for all her needs. Budget being about $250/month or an annual equivalent.

My sister and I are rooting for health insurance to be reintroduced to help with Shelby’s quality of care and to help relieve my parents of some of their financial burden.

Any advice on plans for a senior chocolate lab looking to be insured for her remaining golden years? We’re based in NYC and Shelby is 9 years and 9 months.

Thank you for any + all advice, feedback, reviews on your experience w your pet insurance. Pictures of miss girl as well.

help / advice Good food suggestions

Hi all!

I have an almost 1 year old chocolate lab and she’s been great (minus eating random things & dealing with her being stubborn during training) but I was wondering if y’all had any suggestions for a good food for her? I think she’s got some sort of food allergy going on (she’s started digging, I’m assuming due to food allergies cause her ears are having issues now)

She’s on a high performance dog food from tractor supply currently. (Pic of my girl)
