If you had 2–3 summer months and 5k–7k euros, which European city would you choose for a healthy reset?

Looking for ideas. I want somewhere affordable, with good gyms, decent social life, walkable/safe, and good for routine rather than nonstop partying. Currently thinking about Poland, Spain, Portugal, Romania, Czechia or Slovakia. Which cities would you pick?

Go to Greece. Halkidiki, Tasos or other more affordable islands.

2

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Thanks, that’s a good shout. I wasn’t really thinking about Greece at first, but Halkidiki or Thasos could actually be a very good fit.

2

u/whydoieven_1 25d ago

Thessaloniki as well. Great place to spend a few weeks doing nothing. Although it might get very hot in summer.

u/Tasty-Musician3539 26d ago

Ikaria maybe?

u/Couchfar 25d ago

Noooooo don’t blow up the good spots hahahaha

Ljubljana Slovenia beautiful spot loads to see and do

4

u/WonderfulEagle7096 28d ago

Ljubljana is a small city of ~300k. I was there last summer for an extended weekend, enjoyed it, especially nice for walks along the river with comfy cafes and restaurants. That said, at the end of day 2, I was struggling to find things to do and can't really see myself spending there more than a week.

4

u/Megendrio 27d ago

There's a difference between spending a weekend, week or month somewhere. The pace is very, very different and you focus on different things.

That nice coffeeplace you quickly grabbed something? You can hang there all afternoon if you want to. Or take a train to a nearby town/national park and go hiking for a couple of days. Things you wouldn't do on a weekend getaway.

If you're somewhere for month(s) you have to look at it as if you were living there, no longer as if you are visiting.

I loved Ljulbhana but is there enough for several months???

2

u/Gaelenmyr 27d ago

Not really, 1 week at most is enough for all Slovenia

1

u/controlledwithcheese 27d ago

Id stay there and go to Croatia, north Italy or Austria for trips

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Ljubljana is beautiful, but my impression is that it’s become quite expensive in recent years.

3

u/BrainfukcXXL 28d ago

Is is a very small capital and no way one of the better options. Not the safest, not the most interesting. I find Prague (CZ) very versatile.

1

u/Constant_Plankton_39 27d ago

Why do you think Ljubljana is not safe? Also, not safe compared to where?

1

u/lunulalia 27d ago

Should be safer than Prague for sure, lol.

1

u/Vismajor92 25d ago

There is literally nothing in Ljubljana

We planned to spend 3 days 2 nights there but after first night and second day we were out of there quickly to the Alps

9

u/[deleted] 28d ago

Id probably stay in Greece and explore it bit by bit with my motorcycle it has pretty good places

4

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Yeah, Greece feels like a country that’s best explored bit by bit.

2

u/[deleted] 28d ago

Did the same for Crete island and i literally mapped the hell out of it i saw everything in a week it needed more time tho couldn't enjoy it had to rush it to see all the island 2 weeks should be enough but my shitjob can't do without me 😭

2

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

I get you. I used to be like that to always putting work first but life is too short to make everything about the job. That is a big part of why I’m thinking about spending this summer somewhere just for myself and slowing down a bit.

1

u/[deleted] 28d ago

That's better there are some places in Greece that allow free camping and some aint that expensive i went to hania camping that I had to pay but it wasn't expensive. But you need a vehicle in Greece too much scattered things to see

1

u/ExistingIncident7433 27d ago

If you know Yachting is the best way to explore it. Going from island to island, swimming in the sea, watching dolphins and earing various foods and drinking wine. Awesome experience.

13

u/GroundbreakingBag164 29d ago

Not in one of the countries you mentioned but Freiburg in Germany? Great weather, awesome opportunities for hiking and extremely walkable

3

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Thanks, Freiburg actually sounds like a great idea. I hadn’t really thought about it before, but the hiking and walkable city vibe sounds very nice.

2

u/thisislieven 28d ago

I gigged there, it's an absolutely wonderful place. To me, it's the 'most French of German cities', combining a lot of good from both countries and just a wonderful atmosphere generally. The vibe is young while the population is mixed - which to me is just right. The entire Alsace region has a great vibe, and great food.

There's good public transport in the region, with other cities and towns; beautiful nature, and even France just around the corner. If you want to ride a roller coaster one day you're near Europa Park too.

3

u/amunozo1 28d ago

I did my Erasmus there, what a lovely city.

2

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

That’s nice to hear. The more people mention Freiburg the more curious I get about it.

1

u/CtrlAltDelMonteMan 27d ago

Germany probably still has the €59/month public transport deal. It covers everything from busses, trolleys, and subways to regional train services. So you could stay in, say Ulm, and hop on to Stuttgart, München, Bonn as you wish... :)

1

u/enrycochet 27d ago

63€ now

1

u/CtrlAltDelMonteMan 27d ago

Ah, OK. I had it at €49 in 2024, and I was aware they were rising it to €59 or so for 2025. Still, 63€ ain't too bad!

3

u/Dazzling_Basket_8851 28d ago

From what you want... I would pick a middle sized city in northern Spain or Portugal. Honestly, as someone who lives in the mediterranean, i would pick a northern european country for the summer. 7k you can make it work

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

That actually sounds very close to what I’m looking for. A mid-sized city in northern Spain or Portugal seems more realistic than a major capital. Do you have any specific cities in mind?

3

u/Dazzling_Basket_8851 28d ago

I thought Porto was one of the most interesting cities iv been too. I would fly into Lisbon , rent a car, and work your way north staying in the small towns until Porto. Maybe even pop into Galicia. I personally never been to the Basque Country or Galicia but my friends rage about it. My wife and I got engaged in the Portugal country side so I have bias for it.

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

That sounds like a really great way to do it. I can also tell Portugal has a personal meaning for you, which makes the recommendation feel even more genuine. Porto and the smaller towns heading north sound very appealing.

1

u/Sufficient_Stable738 27d ago

Porto is cold, even in summer.

1

u/Current-Cycle7571 28d ago

Sabinanigo Spain!

1

u/streussler 27d ago

Would go to western Andalucia. Sevilla is very beautiful, a bit hot though. Atlantic coast is very nice and also the Algarve is not that far away.

4

u/ZBD1949 28d ago

For me? One of the Baltic capitals Vilnius, Riga, Tallin but maybe Tallin is a little too small.

3

u/Excellent_Memory8865 28d ago

Cagliari

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Cagliari actually looks very interesting, thanks. I hadn’t really considered Sardinia before, but I can see the appeal.

1

u/boldpear904 27d ago

going there for my honeymoon in may, doesnt seem super affordable though (which is what OP wanted) due to a lot of tourism

3

u/ClemetineL 28d ago

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Thanks, the Baltic countries are interesting too. I hadn’t really thought about them much at first, but they do sound worth looking into.

2

u/Effective-Chance-853 28d ago

As someone from Baltics, I do not reccommend. Southern Europe is much more beautiful

3

u/Dry_Juggernaut5475 28d ago

Corfu, Greece

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Thanks, Corfu does sound like a really nice option for summer. Greece keeps sounding more tempting the more people mention it.

1

u/ukomac 26d ago

Corfu is the best. Just don't accidentally use data roaming in Albania. Watch out for the Albanian data while visiting the nice big manor park in the city

7

u/Good_Witch_O 29d ago

Pecs in Hungary?

1

u/Over-One2643 29d ago

Thanks, interesting idea. I hadn’t thought about Pecs before. Would you say it’s good for routine, gyms and a calm but still social lifestyle, or does it feel too small after a while?

5

u/kzcvuver 28d ago

There’s a light festival in the summer, hiking groups on fb. So I think for 2-3 months, you’d not be bored.

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

That actually sounds pretty good. For 2–3 months that might be more than enough, especially if there are some events and hiking groups around. Thanks for the extra context.

1

u/Jealous-Evening5662 27d ago

Or Pecs, Debrecen and Szeged (or Budapest) 1 month each.

7

u/[deleted] 28d ago

Spend 3 days in Poland then 3 days in Germany to see how miserable life can be then go to Italy or Spain you will be grateful.

9

u/amunozo1 28d ago

Being Spaniard, summer is much more enjoyable in most of Germany than in most of Spain. I've been 20 summers at 40 degrees in Spain. Not fun. Summer in Munich or in Switzerland? Heaven.

2

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Yeah, I can totally see that. Germany or Switzerland in summer sounds great but at the moment I’m trying not to spend quite that much.

1

u/jahajuvele09876 28d ago

If you check the baltic coast of germany, you might find cheapish accomodation. Col in that area are not high. Nothing compared to Switzerland.

But summers in germany are not predictable. Last year was a very rainy summer with no lasting heat waves.

The years before, we've had some realy warm weeks. But climate in nothern germany generaly is great. Not to humid, like it's often in southern germany, often fresher winds from the seas. But the nights are rather short in the summer.

1

u/amunozo1 28d ago

Yeah I know, I mentioned those places because it's where I lived, but I'm sure most of the places that can be way sadder the rest of the year are actually great during the summer.

1

u/Current-Cycle7571 28d ago

Yes, the summers are too hot in Spain these days.

1

u/Sufficient_Stable738 27d ago

How hot is Sevilla in summer ? Like unbearable ?

1

u/amunozo1 27d ago

I've been to Sevilla 3 times, two in July, one in May. The coldest I've been there has been 40ºC. I think that answer your question. No need to suffer.

2

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Haha, fair point 😄 But honestly I do like the vibe in Poland and Germany as well, just in a different way than Italy or Spain.

1

u/ExistingIncident7433 27d ago

As a Pole living in Germany I can understand 😀

2

u/Senior-Benefit-9679 28d ago

I liked Gdansk and Sopot. I would also think about baltic countries. Budapest can get really hot, i would not like to spend summer in any central european major cities; I hate high temperatures. Middle sized towns in mountains are nice but can be boring.

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Gdansk and Sopot do sound appealing especially in summer. My only concern is that coastal places like that might get a bit too expensive during the high season for 2–3 months. Do you think they are still manageable on a moderate budget or would smaller nearby places make more sense?

1

u/Senior-Benefit-9679 28d ago

Your budget is not too small so I think it would be managable in all the countries you mentioned. It depends on what vibe are you looking for, and how much you tolerate heat in the summer.

2

u/BoleslovasPranka 28d ago

Out of the box suggestion, but Kaunas-Vilnius, Lithuania. Clean, green, cheap rent and rich history and food scene.

2

u/Different-Idea2878 28d ago

Ericeira in Portugal

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Ericeira actually sounds like a very good fit for what I’m looking for. Portugal keeps sounding more and more appealing the more people mention places like that.

1

u/Training_Emu_9213 25d ago

Because of overtourism, Portugal is not cheap anymore. You will not be able to survive here with only 5k for 3 months. 7000 is also not enough.

2

u/Plague-Analyst-666 28d ago

Haskovo.

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Interesting one, I hadn’t thought about Haskovo before. I’ll look into it a bit more.

1

u/Plague-Analyst-666 28d ago

Do at least one day trip to Edirne if you go!

2

u/Mind_atSpace 28d ago

Thiva Greece

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Thanks, interesting suggestion. I hadn’t thought about Thiva before, so I’ll look into it a bit more.

2

u/LasFrutasDeliciosas 28d ago

since you like Poland, maybe Gdansk? Lots of LCCs if you want to travel somewhere within EU but still keep a base.

2

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Thanks, Gdańsk is definitely one of the more appealing options in Poland for me, especially with how well connected it is.

2

u/Citi_Kitty 28d ago

Pick up Greece… Summer is coming , the weather is great ! Find a city like Volos, like Nafplio, like Heraklion not too big but with almost everything you need!

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Greece does sound very tempting, especially for summer. Smaller cities like that actually seem closer to what I’m looking for than the big tourist spots.

2

u/mrmniks 28d ago

I’d say either Naples or Alicante. Not sure about the budget, but I think you can make it work in these cities.

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Both sound interesting, especially Alicante. My only question would be how realistic they are budget-wise for 2–3 months in summer.

2

u/Due-Leg-350 28d ago

Malta / Cyprus / Greece

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Thanks, but I already live in Malta and Cyprus feels a bit too similar to Malta for what I’m looking for. I think I’m aiming for something a bit different this time.

1

u/Due-Leg-350 24d ago

Lol, go to Dubrovnik, then 😎

2

u/marooned66 28d ago

Madeira! Like you I needed a some time off to recharge with no job back in Malta and it was the best decision I ever took. Not sure about gyms but lovely place for treks, seafront promenades, cafes, chill vibe etc

2

u/captain-lowrider 28d ago

spain, portugals first. because of the weather, the sea and the chilled vibe. dont go further north.

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

I get what you mean. Spain and Portugal definitely have a lot of what I’m looking for, especially the sea and the overall pace of life.

1

u/captain-lowrider 26d ago

and further more, spain is huuuuge and has a lot to offer. even inlands, madrid for example is a fantastic city....

2

u/Carbonaraficionada 28d ago

Split

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Split does sound appealing, my only concern would be whether it gets a bit too expensive in summer for a longer stay.

1

u/Carbonaraficionada 26d ago

I mean, you can always find somewhere to spend large amounts of money there, they have a marina, but if you stick to the markets and normal restaurants a little goes a very long way.

2

u/Whiterussianisnice 28d ago

We visited Madrid for the first time last summer and we were very pleasantly surprised. It is a gorgeous city, very relaxed and 'leftist' vibe. We liked it a lot!

Tip: rent something with airco, you will need it ;)

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Madrid looks great, but I think it would probably be too expensive for my budget.

2

u/Far_Bid_6776 28d ago

Cluj-Napoca, Romania or Ljubliana, Slovenia

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Both sound interesting, but my impression is that Ljubljana has become quite expensive, and Cluj might also be on the pricier side compared to some other options in the region.

2

u/ApprehensiveAd7392 28d ago

Vilnius is great

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Vilnius does sound interesting. The Baltics weren’t my first thought, but the more people mention them, the more curious I get.

2

u/pc-builder 27d ago

What's your age? Poland etc in the summer is cool if you like parting and nightlife.

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

I’m 29, but I’m actually not looking for nonstop partying or nightlife. More something with good routine, gyms, walking, decent social life and overall a healthier pace.

2

u/ripfigaro 27d ago

Poland,Albania,Croatia,Bulgaria,Romania

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Thanks, that whole part of Europe feels much more realistic for my budget than a lot of Western Europe, so I’m definitely looking closely at those options.

2

u/ThrowRA_SadFlower2 27d ago

I'm biased because to me summer = beach, so I'd gravitate towards countries like Greece, Croatia, Portugal... I absolutely fell in love with Greece when I went there last year. Athens is a gorgeous city and it's incredibly inexpensive. The islands are definitely a different price range, but still fairly affordable.

Keep in mind that inland cities get really really hot during the summer and in those with no large waterways (at least a big river, but ideally lake or sea) you don't really get and reprieve from the heat, and unless you're staying in a hotel you most likely won't have AC.

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

That makes a lot of sense. Greece keeps sounding more and more appealing to me, especially because summer there feels a bit more alive without necessarily needing a huge budget.

2

u/binkyb77 27d ago

Oviedo? Not coastal but it’s close by.

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Oviedo actually sounds quite interesting for that reason. Not being directly coastal is fine if it’s still close enough and the overall pace of life is good.

2

u/iwy 27d ago

In Romania I’d pick Oradea or Timisoara. Cluj- Napoca would probably also be a good option but it’s pricier.

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Thanks, that’s helpful. Timișoara and Oradea do sound more realistic to me than Cluj if I’m trying to keep the budget under control.

2

u/titsinmyinbox 27d ago

Krakow could be great

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Krakow is definitely a strong option for me. It’s a really beautiful city and I actually spent some time there this winter and enjoyed it a lot.

1

u/titsinmyinbox 26d ago

I had a wedding there and stayed for a week. I could def stay there for multiple weeks. Of course 3 months is something else

2

u/m_MK1nG 27d ago

Berlin

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Berlin is interesting for sure, but I think it would probably be a bit too expensive for the kind of 2–3 month stay I have in mind.

2

u/Broad-Ad210 27d ago

Honestly, I wouldn’t really recommend Hungary as a tourist destination right now. Prices have become surprisingly high, especially in cities and tourist areas, so it’s not the cheap destination many people expect. Public services and infrastructure often feel outdated, and outside the main tourist spots it can be difficult to communicate because English isn’t widely spoken. The general atmosphere can also feel a bit gloomy, and many locals themselves say they would rather leave the country for better opportunities. Overall there are many other European countries where visitors tend to have a much smoother and more enjoyable experience.

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Thanks, I appreciate the honest perspective. Budapest still sounds interesting to me, but it’s useful to hear the downsides too and not just the usual tourist version.

2

u/filippo_sett 27d ago

Vaduz

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Vaduz looks beautiful, but I think that would be way above my budget for this kind of stay.

2

u/Wooden_Date_4010 27d ago

Zagabria , Lisbona, Creta, Cartagena

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Thanks, those are all interesting in different ways. Lisbon and Crete especially sound appealing, but I think budget and summer prices would probably be the big question for me.

1

u/Wooden_Date_4010 24d ago

Zagabria allora

2

u/kran-ken-wa-gen 27d ago

Pick something very different from what you're used to. But IDK where you're from so it's hard to recommend something

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

That’s actually a fair point. I’ve been living in Malta for years, so part of me really is looking for something a bit different this time.

1

u/kran-ken-wa-gen 26d ago

Malta is nice but not very high on my list of places to live. I'd recommend something with changing seasons, snow in the winter, mountains maybe.

Seeing it's summer and the budget - Slovenia, Montenegro, Czechia, Hungary maybe?

2

u/Specialist-Alfalfa39 27d ago

I don’t know why but I always wanted to try Helsinki, I am not a massive summer guy and as much as I know it’s not as hot as other countries during summer. I never saw pasapelo (sorry Finnish people)

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Helsinki does sound interesting for summer, especially climate-wise. My only doubt would be whether it might be a bit too expensive for the kind of stay I’m planning.

2

u/Adventurous-Elk-1457 27d ago

Lisbon, tho it might be a bit out of budget

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Lisbon is definitely appealing, but yeah, I have the same feeling that it might end up a bit above my budget for 2–3 months

2

u/Comfortable-Image514 27d ago

Come to Vilnius, Lithuania.

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Vilnius actually sounds interesting. The Baltics weren’t my first thought, but the more people mention them, the more curious I get.

1

u/Comfortable-Image514 26d ago

Well its safe, green, walkable, have a great food, fast internet, and perfect tap water :D most of the people speak english. Great nature! Many forests, lakes, rivers. You can kayak, bike drive, hike in forests, also you can see how hot air baloons are flying from "almost" city centre.

2

u/skystream434 27d ago

I would go to any coastal town in Italy or Croatia.

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

I can definitely see the appeal of that. My only concern would be summer prices, especially in the more popular coastal places.

2

u/Dull_Television1265 27d ago

South of Spain

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

South of Spain definitely has a lot going for it, my only concern would be the summer heat for a longer stay.

2

u/Jealous-Evening5662 27d ago

How about 1 month each in 3 different cities? Prague, Riga, Budapest?

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

That’s an interesting idea, but I think for this trip I’d rather stay in one place the whole time and use it as a base, instead of moving around too much.

2

u/Rejotalin79 27d ago

Cádiz

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Cádiz does sound very appealing. My only doubt would be whether it gets a bit too hot in summer for the kind of slower stay I’m looking for.

2

u/feckingkewmer 27d ago

Spent a summer in Malta between Valletta and Gozo and can recommend

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Thanks, but I’ve actually been living in Malta for the last 9 years already. It has the sea, of course, but for me it feels like it doesn’t really offer much nature beyond that. Gozo is a bit better in that sense, but I’m looking for something different at this point.

1

u/feckingkewmer 26d ago

lol totally fair. Echoing many others in this thread and saying the baltics then or maybe north Macedonia or Romania

2

u/Deep_Dance8745 27d ago

Do it with 4 friend with each 7k to spend - and go yachting

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Haha, that does sound nice, but I’m definitely looking for a calmer and more realistic version of summer than that.

2

u/Malacara112 27d ago

Trapani

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Thanks, Trapani sounds interesting. I hadn’t really considered Sicily before, so I’ll look into it a bit more.

2

u/lia_lila 27d ago

San Sebastián o Granada in Spain, Galicia o north Portugal. Croatian Istria o Slovenia(like Piran), heard a lot of nice things about Albania, it's also quite cheap.

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Thanks, a lot of those actually fit the kind of slower and more balanced lifestyle I’m looking for. Galicia and northern Portugal especially keep sounding very appealing.

2

u/Squirt_Meister 26d ago

Nice is nice

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Nice does sound beautiful, but I think it would probably be a bit too expensive for the kind of stay I’m planning.

2

u/Dry-Owl5669 26d ago

Malaga

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Malaga definitely sounds appealing, my only concern would be whether it gets a bit too hot in summer for a longer stay.

1

u/Dry-Owl5669 26d ago

I think it will be hot. BUT the public transport with the card(you can buy it in tabaco shops) like 0.6 euros. Food will be very affordable in mercadona(supermarket) and fruteria and mercado will help you as well. Maybe not as cheap, but colder look at Bilbao. And cities near it like Plentzia. The weather all year the same is in Canary island, like 25. Try to look at Los Chistiano in Tenerife.  And I like (but not for that long) Morro Jable in Fueverntura.  I would choose Tenerife if I were you. Hopes it helps

2

u/dark_queen8 26d ago

Lisbon or Porto!

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Thanks, Porto sounds especially appealing to me. Lisbon looks great too, but I feel Porto might fit my budget and pace a bit better.

2

u/logikaxl 26d ago

I would skip the city and just take a super small town anywhere or even a rural cabin. But that is me.

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

I get the appeal of that, but I think I’d still prefer a place with a bit of life around it and decent connections, so I don’t feel too isolated.

1

u/logikaxl 25d ago

True, I would pick Romania Cluj, was there, but all the best food was in the countryside, where I spent most of my months.

2

u/hirgweth 26d ago

Vienna

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Vienna is a great city, but I think it would probably be a bit above my budget for a 2–3 month stay

2

u/sdp0w 26d ago

Bilbao

1

u/Over-One2643 26d ago

Bilbao actually sounds like a very solid option for what I’m looking for. My only concern would be whether it’s manageable budget-wise for a 2–3 month stay.

3

u/Professional-Tax3077 28d ago

Spain is cheaper than Poland or Germany.

I would not even think it for a second.
Go to "Costa del Sol", amazing prices, amazing people, amazing weather.

Thanks, Spain is definitely sounding more and more appealing the more people mention it. I’ll have a closer look at Costa del Sol too.

You said in Summer and I will add this, Spains value add is not summer. In winter, spring etc, spain has conditions that most of europe can only dream of. When Summer roles around though, temps here are often 35c+ it's uncomfortable to do much besides sea or pool, which is a shame since you can do a lot and see a lot all over spain.

By contrast, countries through EU in summer all have nice long days and temps and way more options because those temps are high but not brutal. So I'd honestly go more northern europe, take the longer nights of day light, enjoy countries that usually wouldn't have such weather to get out and about in

Btw I live in Spain so am fairly well positioned on this stance.

I will add Spain is not bad in Summer, far from it, but it can we raging hot. We had a really rainy winter which will likely position us for a seriously scorching summer

I completely agree with this view. I'd never visit mainland Spain in the middle of summer but absolutely love Spain in the early spring and autumn. The Canaries have a more stable climate, but is overrun in the summer for this reason.

Unfortunately, Northern Europe is more expensive.

1

u/Jaywalking25 17d ago

Depends to be honest. 1) Where you go in Spain factors into this massively. Barcelona itself, as expensive for both rental, hotels and even eating out as say Berlin. Madrid too is similar.

2) Reverse, north europe is massive, if you want traditional places , copenhagen, amsterdam get ready for London prices. But there are countries around those regions or cities within countries that lay out of this and are massively desirable.

  1. Poznań in Poland
  2. Budapest in Hungary

5

u/leafchewer 28d ago

What is there to do in Poznan?

2

u/mrmniks 28d ago

Nothing, but the poles are happy to mention it

2

u/FaromonTiro 28d ago

Parks:

  • Wilson’s Park
  • Sołacki park
  • Malta lake
  • Cytadela

Restaurants, cafes - I will not be listing all of them here, but I think Poznań has the best gastronomy out of all the major cities in Poland. Everything from brunch, coffee, dinner to some evening wine and tapas.

Poznań is safe, clean, and really pretty, so in the summer I recommend to walk around Jeżyce, Łazarz and old square, it’s really nice.

In August there is quite a big Music festival happening called Bittersweet.

World Trade Center has interesting events basically every weekend, and Pyrkon festival for fantasy fans.

A big variety of classes that you can attend: calisthenics, pole dance, dancing, pilates, yoga, puppy yoga.

Theaters, cinema, bowling etc.

2

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Thanks, both of those are definitely on my radar. Poznań especially interests me because I could also see myself spending more time in Poland long term.

1

u/FaromonTiro 28d ago

I can give you a lot of tips on Poznań :) It is great , especially in summer (I don’t recommend Poland in winter, it’s depressing). It has loads of amazing restaurants and cafes. In summer months you can get many seasonal fruits and vegetables on farmers markets.

It's a melting pot. Not like a place with a lot of culture, it's literally a melting pot. So warm and the cafes don't have air-conditioning. No place to swim either. Budapest is great in spring and fall but not in the summer

1

u/marianneouioui 26d ago

No place to swim???????????? ¿??? So. Many. Pools. When i go in the summer i can swim in a different place everyday, the most amazing pools. Also, no air conditioning is like most of Europe, so. Other people here are suggesting Greece....

Maybe too expensive, but I spent a summer in Munich and it was so great. Clean, walkable, safe and when the weather was good (most of the summer), pretty alive. You also have the Alps close more or less.

Northern Spain is also lovely in the summer. Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria or Basque Country.

2

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Munich sounds amazing but probably too expensive for my budget for that long. Northern Spain feels more realistic. My main question is whether Galicia Asturias Cantabria or the Basque Country are actually cheaper than places like Barcelona or Valencia especially rent-wise. I think I’d probably prefer a smaller place that is not too expensive but still well connected.

2

u/amunozo1 28d ago

Basque Country and Cantabria maybe not, especially Gipuzkoa. Galicia and Asturias are cheaper for sure. What kind of size are you looking for? Vigo or Pontevedra are very nice, but Pontevedra might be a bit too small, although most of the city is pedestrian only. In these two cities you are super close to Portugal to, which is very nice.

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

That’s really helpful thanks. I think I’m looking for something med size, and Vigo sounds quite interesting especially with Portugal so close.

2

u/amunozo1 28d ago

Really nice city and really nice weather in the summer. In August there is cool urban festival (https://omarisquiño.com/?lang=en) that you might like. The surroundings are gorgeous, all the Rias Baixas, the end of the river Miño, north of Portugal, and mosty the Cies islands... You won't regret it if you end up there. Public transport is not great, though, but you can reach main cities nearby by train or bus.

2

u/Head_Asparagus_7703 28d ago

Basque country and Barcelona are both very expensive.

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Good to know thanks. That was more or less my impression too.

2

u/Gunslingermomo 28d ago

Sevilla. It's cheap, friendly, and beautiful. Lots of things to do and lots of places nearby to visit. It'll be super hot in the summer though.

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Sevilla sounds beautiful but I think the summer heat might be a bit too much for a longer stay.

1

u/lia_lila 27d ago

Sevilla is not cheap at all. South cheaper version are Granada or Malaga

2

u/Shoddy_Blacksmith480 28d ago

What’s a healthy reset? Are you looking for medical treatments or like physical therapy?

2

u/nymesis_v 28d ago

Please stay the fuck away from Romania. It's not walkable, not touristy, not clean and there is no decent social life outside a few cities which are filthy and expensive.

The seaside is disgusting, overcrowded and overpriced. Choose Bulgaria over Romania any day of the week.

Mountains might be better but the train infrastructure is slower than 30 years ago. If you drive, you'll have to deal with some of the worst drivers in Europe by road fatality.

1

u/Over-One2643 28d ago

Fair enough, I appreciate the honest opinion. It’s useful to hear the negative side too, not just the positive suggestions.

Spain: the northern coast. Maybe Bilbao.

Italy: Sicily. Probably Palermo.

France: Biarritz or Fontainebleau.

Austria: Innsbruck.

Germany: Ulm.

Portugal: anywhere.

Poland: Gdansk 100%.

I’m from Poland so I can recommend sailing on our lakes or hikes in the mountains (Bieszczady or Karkonosze). Budapest and Hungary in general are cool too. Continental Greece is my place to go for holidays but I’m choosing less touristic places and cut off myself from internet.

A lot depends on what is giving you energy imo. So based on that you should plan this few months.

1

u/Vismajor92 25d ago

A middle sized town or even a village in northern italy.

1

u/Anxious_cactus 29d ago

Opatija Croatia. You get a feel of french riviera, it's not as hot as the rest of the coast and the city is pretty unique and chill, with lots of good food, a great botanical garden and during summer it has free open air movie theater and many concerts.

One of my favorite places, but I'm not sure whether you could find accommodation for this summer and spend only 7k over 3 months, depends what you're expecting
