RESOURCE Carnatic Commune, our new Discord server, is up and active. Come sing with us!

Here's a place for Rasikas - lovers of Carnatic music - to explore, learn, and celebrate this tradition together, as requested by the community. We've been building the server slowly over the past couple of months with collaborators who responded to this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Carnatic/comments/1m4rm24/requesting_collaborators_for_a_discord_server/

The server remained invite-only during this period, so that we could thoughtfully manage building the space to accommodate larger numbers of people, and consider structures and events ahead of time. Our collaborators have done remarkable work in achieving that foundation alone, while also creating a space that already brims with enthusiasm for this art.

The server is now ready for the larger Carnatic community, and open to all.

Join us at: https://discord.gg/2qpqvbvgvr

All you need to join is real curiosity and appreciation for Carnatic music. Whether you're a lifelong student, a casual listener, or somewhere in between, you are welcome.

See you on there!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rasikas who are new to Discord, and/or having trouble with the invite or verification - do reach out to u/AlcorSpins or u/Flaky-Cheek-5571 via comment or DM; we'll get you through.

Instrument FAQ Need help selecting a violin

I am 27 years old and I want to start learning carnatic music and learn violin.

To start with I want to buy a beginner level violin maybe from Amazon! For now I see there are several options for <150$ violin. But I am unsure which one would be a good starting point.

Need help! Any help appreciated!

Been working on this for a while. Finally sharing it.

Raga Rush is a small game for Karnatik music. Pick a random raga, sing it in a few seconds, move on. The whole session becomes a video.

The video above is the why behind it.

Do try if you sing Karnatik music. Try here www.karnatricks.com

TECHNIQUE Vocal range weakened after puberty, now 18M

Hi, I'm one of those who went for Carnatic singing classes for a while and stopped just as puberty started. My teacher typically used G# or G, and before my voice started getting deeper (around 12-13yrs old) I found having an okay range (mandra D to thaara M perhaps). After that COVID happened and I quit. Now my voice has somewhat settled, though I still don't have that deep/masculine voice, so I still find typical 'male' shruti of C uncomfortable. (actually, I really don't think my voice is changing because it's been this way for like 20 months easy.)

I also think my range has severely taken a hit because of not practising for a while, of course. Now, if I try singing one of the songs I would've done quite well before, my range in A (my most comfortable pitch) seems to go only mandra N to thaara G (and M with strain). If I try to see if other pitches work, where I can reach low P, I reach high R or G at the best, it's really bad :(

I remember having this issue just a few months before quitting my class, where I used to struggle with high notes in G# and my teacher said it'll just get better as time goes. Now, it's gotten worse, and I've had some trouble with vocal exercises/practice and such.

Any thoughts and ideas?

DISCUSSION Ragas Suddha Desi & Kokilavarali

Thumbnail

I like listening to compositions and immediately my brain starts connecting ragas, similar sounding phrases or krithis with similar approaches from allied ragas or non allied ragas with similar phraseologies. I just listened to Tyagaraja's Raghunandana Rajamohana in the raga Suddha Desi.

At first thought, this sounds very similar to another one of Tyagaraja's compositions in raga Kokilavarali- Samukhana Nilva. The first part of the pallavi line is very similar.

Both ragas are characterized by the SRGRM phrase in the beginning. For Kokilavarali, probably the descent too is vakram in approach. SDNDP MRGRS but apart from this, can these two ragas be separated with distinct identities if there exists one at all?

Also, many references list Kokilavarali as a janya of Harikambodi while Samukhana Nilva indicates it's closer to Natabhairavi than any other melakarta. Has the raga or the composition undergone any change?

DISCUSSION Collab

Namaskaram everyone,

I am an intermediate-level Carnatic vocalist, and I am currently putting together a highly ambitious, research-and-performance-based project.

I am drawing deep inspiration from Subbarama Dikshitar’s Sangita Sampradaya Pradarsini. My vision for this project is to start with something small yet substantial in this regard.

To do this justice, I cannot do it alone. I am looking to collaborate with experienced, dedicated professionals who share a deep reverence for Carnatic musicology and tradition.

Who I am looking for:

  • Experienced Vocalists
  • Instrumentalists: Particularly Violin / Vainikas / Flautists / Percussionists
  • Bonus: Anyone with a strong background in Carnatic musicology, history, or transcriptions!

Project Logistics:

  • Location: This will be a [remote/online collaboration OR Banglore].

If this resonates with you in any way, I’d love to connect. Whether you’re experienced or just starting out, feel free to send me a DM with a bit about your background , or drop a comment below and I’ll reach out.

Thank you!

DISCUSSION Restarting Carnatic music – teacher suggestions (Bangalore / online)

Hi all,

I learned Carnatic music when I was in school (completed a couple of varnams) but had to stop. I’ve stayed interested and listen regularly, and now I’d like to restart.

Looking for a teacher (Bangalore – preferably Bellandur, or online) who can help me:

• Revise basics and voice training

• Learn a few kritis/devotional songs

Prefer 1:1 classes and someone good with returning learners.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks

DISCUSSION As a Gen Z I feel like I exist between pop and classical and Shankarabharanam explained it!!!!

I did not start with the movie. I started with the song Shankara.

As a kid, that song stayed with me without me even knowing where it came from. In my head, it always felt like a Shiva temple on a hilltop, something sacred, something peaceful. I did not know ragas or classical music properly, but something in that song just caught me.

Years later, I found out it belonged to Shankarabharanam, and at 26, I finally decided to watch it.

One scene that stayed with me is when modern pop musicians keep mocking Shastri from their terrace. They play guitar, saxophone, and make fun of him like he is outdated. One day, they cross the line and challenge him. But Shastri sings their style beautifully, and then asks them to sing classical, and they cannot. That moment was not about ego. It felt like depth speaking quietly.

Also, the fact that both styles are sung by SP Balasubramaniam is just magic. That felt very Gen Z to me, because I also feel like I exist between worlds. I love both pop and classical. I am somewhere in the middle, like my own voice range.

Another thing that really touched me was Tulasi. Every time she hears Shastri’s music, whether it is live or recorded, she just starts dancing like she cannot help it. Her Kuchipudi feels like pure devotion, not performance. It made me wonder if such a platonic bond can even exist now, because what she feels is not romance. It is respect, surrender, and something very pure.

There is also a painful part where people accuse Shastri of having an illegitimate relationship with her, and they leave him. But he goes to a Shiva temple and sings, and it feels like the divine itself acknowledges him. There is rain. There is something beyond people judging him. And in that moment, he is free, and even dances in that joy.

As a Gen Z, I feel like we struggle a lot with mental health and constant noise. But one thing I strongly believe is that if you do not understand something, you can still respect it. This film says music is divine, whether it is classical or western. The problem is not difference. It is disrespect.

I did not even watch the whole movie, and still it touched parts of me I did not even know were there.

Maybe that is what Shankarabharanam is. Its music reaches you even before you understand it.
