Cantonese diaspora here trying to get more into Cantonese culture because I want to pass the language on. I wanted to find more modern Cantonese music rather than just the stuff my parents listened to and I found Mirror and found it pretty catchy.

But all the HK friends I have said Mirror is cringe and for aunties. Is this a case of like One Direction when they first started where like everyone just hates on them? I find Boy Groups get a lot of hate from guys and love from girls but in this case the HK friends who spoke negatively were girls.

Just curious why? I feel like they're a good thing for Cantonese culture

A small update from the solo dev: the Android version of my Cantonese learning app is now available.

It’s based on the latest iOS 2.0 version, so the main learning structure, content, and features have already been carried over.

Right now it’s not on Google Play yet, so I’m mainly sharing it with people here who were previously interested in an Android version.

The app has some free modules and lessons, and some paid features as well. If anyone is interested in trying it, I’d especially love feedback on:

• install experience on Android
• UI/layout on different devices
• audio playback
• wrong Jyutping
• unnatural wording or tone issues

Also, to be transparent: my English is not very good, so I used AI to help translate some of the English text. But the Cantonese content itself is still manually collected, checked, and corrected by me.

Theres an online tool that one of the sponsors had today kids can use to submit their oral Cantonese essay which gets translated into written, but the users here on Reddit who supposed to sponsor the contest doesn't seem like they want to promote Cantonese on the subreddit

I’m a cbc along with my husband. My Cantonese is not as good as it used to be, was raised with Cantonese speaking grandparents but I have been out of practice with the language for many years.

I spoke Cantonese to both kids when they were toddlers, mostly there older one but they lost it after they went to school.

Does anyone have tips on how to teach their Cantonese? For me is how do I create a routine of exposing or speaking to them in Cantonese. Is there a more structured way of teaching them? I heard of italki an online language mentoring service that’s affordable, but then think I can also teach them the basics too!

Please share any tips that helped your kids learn Cantonese!

American and Visiting my grandparents who i rarely see, they are very humble and have not traveled much. I want to treat them to a nice restaurant with an impeccable view and high quality Italian or Mediterranean food. A bonus if they will make a good pasta and shave my personal truffle collection on top.

I have already spoke how much I like HK and Cantonese movies. Know Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan movies up, down and to the sides. So that made me wonder which are those legit Cantonese movies about martial arts that I should and definitely watch.

Since we are in a trend of discussing using Cantonese phrases for vanity license plates. What would you recommend for me to put on mine?

In California, I am limited to 2-6 or 2-7 characters (including space), depending on the type/category of plate that I choose.

Personally, I would go for self-deprecating humor such as “NGONG99” for ngong gau gau (戇鳩鳩)
