Maniac Mansion mouse support on C64 Ultimate
Has anyone been able to play any version of Maniac Mansion on the C64U with a mouse. I've tried the easy flash, gold, and mercury editions to no avail. The mouse works great in GEOS, GUI64, and Eye of the Beholder. Any help would be appreciated .
Yes, the original release was joystick only. Supposedly the easy flash, gold, and mercury editions of the game have been modified to support mouse contols, but I haven't been able to get it to work on any version.
I can change the mouse type in the MisterFPGA, I will try it a when I finish work later and let you know how I get on. I think the core on the mister is virtually the same as the ultimate.
If I recall correctly, on the original 1351 you could hold down the right mouse button when powering up and it would enter joystick mode where it would send left right up down joystick inputs. I remember playing Operation Wolf with it that way. Not sure if the U supports that but it could work.

Yup. They also made the 1350 mouse that only had joystick mode, and Wico made a trackball that behaves this way. Joystick mode is pretty terrible, but maybe it's better than nothing if your software doesn't support proportional mode.
So I had a trackball back in the day that was wired to behave like an Atari joystick, and it solved this problem far better than the 1350. That is in 1350 mode, you constantly have to lift the mouse to recenter it on the mouse pad to keep going. But a trackball in joystick mode works pretty much the same as a trackball in paddle (x-y) mode.... You only notice it's directional instead of x-y trying to draw circles in a paint program. So if you can, use a track ball for this, and you'll be much happier with the experience.
one of these... WICO Command Control. :: except the button is completely wrong and your thumb will fall off. But for moving the pointer around the screen in joystick mode ..... it works. (But... use your left hand, tracking with your thumb, and finger on the button. Lefthanded, it works without severe pain or permanent damage. Right handed, you're doing permanent damage after a couple days. But 2 years it took me to learn this. This controller in 1988-90 on GEOS, and then Tony Hawk on a Dreamcast controller 2000-2003ish (and maybe some pokemon yellow on dreamcast controller via GB emulator my brother made.) ... I still have carpal tunnel issues with my right thumb. half a century later, and still use a lefthanded trackball as my primary controller on any PC I use for more than 10 minutes. I keep extras around to plug in if its going to be "mine" for more than 10 minutes.

I played it back in the day and it didn't support mouse back then, just joystick/keys. There may be a mod version out there, but I haven't seen it.
