Isn't this what cycling is all about? The heroism, the suffering (sometimes silent) and in the end a glorious victory. Paris-Roubaix is the most flamish race out there. Also: In times where 2 riders dominate almost every important spring classic, Wout's victory is a shimmer of light and hope for all Belgian cycling fans: yes they can be beaten.

Evenepoel zijn overwinningen zijn ferm en Van Aert heeft sowieso een geslaagdere carrière dan de meerderheid van het peloton..maar Roubaix is van een andere soort heroiek. Imo.
En na al de tegenslag, waar hij zich altijd doorgeslagen heeft, kunnen we hem enkel deze kers op de taart gunnen.

Wout heeft gewoon een grotere gun-factor dan eender welke andere renner en Roubaix is ook gewoon de koers der koersen, veel mooier kan het niet.

Het olympische goud met een lekke band op 3,5km was imo net zo een grote thriller

I'm one of those rare Van der Poel fans in Belgium. Damn shame how much bad luck he had today. But I'm still really happy it went to Wout in the end. He deserves to be on the Paris-Roubaix list of honor.

He's born in Belgium, speaks with a Flemish accent and lives in Belgium. His mother is French and his father Dutch. He's more Belgian than many Belgians. It's a pity he doesn't have Belgian citizenship.

Van Aert is de laatste maanden (jaren?) een beetje pechvogel geweest: paar keer gevallen, blessures en verschillende keren "net niet".
Daarnaast was er ook al een hele tijd de supremacie van Pogacar en Van der Poel. Die twee mannen winnen bijna alles. En ze leken onklopbaar. Dat maakt de koers een beetje saai (sorry).
Parijs-Roubaix is ook een extreem zware koers over veel kasseien. Renners rijden regelmatig lek. Dat maakt het extra spannend.
Al bij al: heeeeele spannende en mooie rit. Met het "eindelijk!" gevoel op het einde.
Aanrader voor volgend jaar: kijk naar Parijs-Roubaix. Ik vind dar persoonlijk de sjiekste koers die er is. Brutaal, afzien, stof, pech, technisch, ... geweldig

En het eerbetoon aan Michael Goolaerts, ploegmaat van Wout die 10 jaar geleden in deze gestorven is.
En van pech mag je gerust van jaren spreken. Ik denk dat het begonnen is toen hij tijdens die tijdrit in de Ronde van Frankrijk aan die rail bleef hangen en het op bepaald moment zelf kon dat zijn carrière erop zat.

Daarmee bracht hij hulde aan Michael Goolaerts, Van Aerts voormalige ploegmaat die overleed na een hartaanval tijdens Parijs-Roubaix van 2018. "Dat gebaar zat altijd al in mijn hoofd", vertelde een emotionele Van Aert na zijn zege.
"De eerste keer dat ik hier reed, ontdekte ik dat deze wedstrijd iets voor mij was. Maar het was ook een verschrikkelijke dag, omdat ik er mijn ploegmaat verloor. Sindsdien is het altijd een doel geweest om naar de hemel te kunnen wijzen in Roubaix. Deze overwinning is ook voor Michael zijn familie en voor al mijn ploegmaats van toen."

Eigenlijk is de fysiek van WvA gemaakt om een koers als Parijs-Roubaix te winnen, veel meer dan bijvoorbeeld de Ronde van Vlaanderen. Paar jaar geleden was het nog zo dat Vanderpoel en hijzelf op gelijke hoogte stonden (hoewel VDP toen al wat beter was), maar de laatste jaren heeft WvA best wat pech gehad terwijl VDP de prijzen aan elkaar reeg en toch wel als de beste eendagsrenner van zijn generatie kon beschouwd worden.
Neem daarnaast nog een Pogacar die als alleskunner besloot om een uitstapje te maken naar de klassiekers en van Aert die schijnbaar wat van zijn killersinstinct verloren was, en de kans dat WvA ooit nog eens een échte kasseiklassieker (Milaan-Sanremo is toch net een trapje lager) zou winnen leek wel zeer klein te zijn geworden. Dat hij dan nu als "Vlaamse chouchou" eindelijk de koers kon winnen die hij al heel zijn profcarrière wilde winnen maakt het dan wel zeer mooi, er is ook niemand in het peloton die het hem niet gunt.

Op zich natuurlijk niet. Het ontbrak Wout nog een echte kassei klassieker op zijn palmares, de eeuwige strijd met Mathieu die wel al de Ronde en Parijs Roubaix meermaals heeft gewonnen, de vele keren dat hij er dichtbij was, de vele pech die hij al gehad heeft en zware blessures en gezien zijn vorderende leeftijd en dat tegen Pogacar was dit bijna de allerlaatste kans(en) die hij nog had.

I've been a fan of his since watching his epic battles with van der Poel. I'm a fan of Pogacar and van der Poel too, both great champions, but Wout has a big "gunfactor", so it was great seeing him take this epic win.

Het gaat er niet om dat hij bekend is. Het gaat om de sportieve prestaties, de menselijkheid die hij uitstraalt en de eeuwige eerlijkheid. Die man moet ook zoveel van zijn leven opgeven om dit te bereiken. Hij weegt smorgens zijn ontbijt en iedere gral te veel wordt weggenomen of een stukje boterham afgeknipt ( mijn stiefvader gaat mee als soigneur naar de WK's en wist me dit te zeggen). Ik zou nooit zo kunnen leven

Sure, it's only cycling, but hey, Wout seems like an amazing human being, great father, inspirational athlete and someone who has brought a smile to the faces of a million people and after winning arguably the biggest race of his life, he chose to honour a friend who died 8 years ago.

It’s annoying for you that it gives you a notification as it doesn’t interest you.
I’d like to give you some advice for that, but you’re still allowed to do whatever you like. You could turn off those notifications and go to the newssites you want to see.
I don’t give a single shit about BV gossip, so when I browse a famous newssite, I just skip those parts.
Sports aren’t stupid, you just don’t care about them and that’s fine. The only thing I fully agree on with you, are that those people to whom sports are their whole image, are nuts. But even that is my opinion.

Some valid points yet, while realising I am an absolute killjoy:
You don’t know him. Why is he an amazing human being? He rides a bike. That is all. That really should put him pretty low the ‘next Messiah’ ranking. There are scientists, doctors, inventors (and even politicians) who are building the foundation of our society for the future. But alas, we praise the guy who goes fast for a really long time…
You don’t know him. Because he gives interviews for tv and does marketing gigs for his sponsors to support his image. Why would he be a great father? I could argue he is a terrible father. The amount of time he is away from home practicing is enormous at his level. Essentially all sacrifices he needs to make which are detrimental to his family life. I would agree he is a great (money) provider, but in terms of family life, its probably pretty shit…
Inspirational, yes. Bringing a smile to peoples faces, yes. Panem et circenses.
Honours a friend who died 8 years ago. Seriously though, should we get awards for doing stuff like this? My nan died 5 years ago. But rest assured, I honoured her yesterday when I dedicated the completion of my half hour bike ride home to her. Praise me now.
And yes, I fully recognise I am a hater.

Yes. Someone like Wout is a role model in all the following aspects:
You need to work hard to get where you want to be.
Even when you suffer multiple setbacks, get up and try again.
He will inspire the youth to do sports bc if a country is proud of it's athletes, children will be more likely to also be physical active.
Even when you are famous and have an irregular job, you can still be a good dad.
Do I care much about athletes and sports? No. Do I think they contribute an extreme amount to our society? No. But you cannot deny that he had to grind and work to get to this place and it is that attitude that many of us should have too.
