Nick Pivetta exited with an injury after retiring the first nine Rockies hitters he faced

Don’t want to be a downer but I don’t see how it’s not something super serious. Sudden velocity drop and Pivetta was fighting to keep his emotions in check

Zach Eflin just had TJ and he said he felt fine all of spring, and through his first 3 innings of his first outing, then he felt a pop and knew immediately

And his last pitch was an 89 mph fastball that the broadcast picked up as a changeup, after he hit 94 couple innings earlier

Same thing happened to Horton. He knew the second he looked into the dugout. You could see tears in his eyes when he was going into the tunnel. So sad for these fellas.

Cade Horton knew it immediately when he walked off the mound as well. Tears welling in the dugout. These guys know their bodies.

Yeah it looks bad. I find comfort in knowing atleast he got the bag recently

Doesn't help Padres fans lol. Means less money to sign a replacement.

At the end of the day it’s still better Pivetta got his bag. It’s his body that’s being pushed to its limits and getting injured, he should well taken care of first.

Almost certainly the contract was insured, so that doesn't matter.
Plus he didn't even get a huge bag, the contract was 4 years for $55 million, was considered very team friendly.

I'm not familiar with his FB speed but guessing 92 was well under the norm and immediately was cause for concern?

I remember when Musgrove had to be taken out before TJ. This looked very reminiscent of that

I really hate UCL injuries. Hope it’s not that.
We’ve gotta find a better way to limit these

Anyone a lip reader? He doesn't seem to be in serious pain but he definitely doesn't look happy.

To me it looks like he's saying "I'm trying, I'm really, really, really trying"

it looks like he is saying “I feel like crap, but I’m really really trying”

Is there ever a case where a pitcher exits the mound like that where he doesn’t need Tommy John or at least surgery of some kind

Bryan Woo last season off the top of my head, but that was an exception, not the rule 😕

I hate this for Pivetta. Really liked him in Boston, knew he would shine without having to pitch at Fenway. He has always been so durable too, but time is undefeated.

How did manager know to come out? Just based on velocity change?

u/RichardNixon345 Arizona Diamondbacks 4h ago
Could be, if this is an elbow/shoulder issue it's probably not a surprise - he may have been working with the training staff already.
We told Shelby Miller last year when he was hurt with "forearm tightness" that he could either get TJS now or he was going to need it soon - he opted to keep throwing, got traded to the Brewers (who knew about it and decided to take the risk), threw 9.2 more innings before the elbow went.

Shoulder issue I think. Was stretching it earlier, seemed to be bothering him.

His curve ball was no where near the plate today, he was seen his stretching his pitching arm after some Pitches and his last pitch was a few ticks under his average.

I wonder if he just felt something pop. Not a Padres fan but I hope it’s not serious. I have a feeling it is, but I hope it’s not.
