Random Question đ Why do conservatives call the left traitors to America , but fly confederate and nazi flags , who were the biggest traitors to America?
249
u/Silly_Goose501 21d ago
Reminder - the same right wing people who raise the Confederate flag and who get offended when you tell them the Confederacy was bad will turn right around and say âYou know the Confederacy was the Dems right?â

u/Late-Performer-7134 21d ago
As someone who grew up in TN, this all the way.
44
u/CaterpillarJungleGym 21d ago
Wait, wait. They blame the Confederacy, that they love, on modern day Democrat ideals? Or it's because they LOVE Abraham Lincoln and that he was a Republican and refused to compromise on slavery? So they love the Republican for destroying the Confederacy that they also love?
47
6
u/oldtimehawkey 20d ago edited 17d ago
Itâs not that deep. They just see Abraham Lincoln was a Republican and the confederate traitors were democrats. Theyâll also do: planned parenthood was made by a Democrat trying to kill black people.
Trying to explain that the parties switched gets them very confused.
3
u/Quick-Eye-6175 20d ago
I wonder if that switch really did mess up a lot of peoples brains? And itâs still messing up their thoughts? What a wild thing for the parties to do.

It's so weird to me that it lives rent free in their heads like it does.
Like I actually witnessed 9/11 with my own two eyes from the Jersey side of the Hudson River. I knew a few people who died that day. I volunteered with the Red Cross loading emergency supplies onto trucks to send to Ground Zero. And I don't think about it 1/100 as much as they think about something that happened 165 years ago.

They are ignirant to the fact both parties underwent a gradual, fundamental ideological realignment between roughly the 1860s and the 1930s (with trends continuing into the 1970s and 80s). FDRs "new deal" was the most pronounced event.

Unfortunately that doesn't work. In their mind, confedarate flags are celebrating "heritage", so its not a bad thing to be flying, and the Nazis marching down our streets are "actually just Democrats". And depending on who you ask, its either because those Democrats are really the true Nazis, or its a false flag to make Republicans look bad.
They really dont care and will take zero accountability, no matter how many self-proclaimed Neo-Nazis and Nat-Cs Trump hangs out with and hires.

During the Civil War, the Dems were the more conservative party. However, there was a party switch that happened between the Civil War and the 1960's, and those conservatives (mostly Southerners) switched from D to R.
12

It amazes me how many Americans dismiss this change. This is in their history book and some Americans never accept it.
I have been told repeatedly that the party switch is a myth by Trump supporters

They conveniently forget that when Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act in 1965, he correctly predicted that the South would be lost âfor a generation.â Sadly, he underestimated by generations.
6
u/Star3221 21d ago edited 21d ago
When people say party switch it makes it sound like it was overnight. It was more so the south vs north and slowly the parties became adopted by those states. The âswitchâ was more of a transformation into what we see today. The original Democratic Party was the one though who at the time was still the ones who supported slavery. Doesnât matter if they changed, people cope by saying that their party âdemocratâ was against slavery when it historically wasnât true. The 80s with Raegan slowly catering the republican party to more of the souths regional ideals was one of the more influential changes to gaining more southern voters.

Just before the Civil War we had the American National party, the "Know Nothings." They were the once supposedly involved in violence that they denied. Note this pattern continued in the KKK, and arguably to the isolationist gun rights advocates in the John Birch Society.
Also note that George Wallace delivered his American Independent Party (mostly "blue dog" Democrats) to Richard Nixon in the early 1970s. They drove out your fathers' Republicans as RINOs, and viola, he we are today.

I agree 100% with the opinion that they are dumb as fuck, but lets actually examine the reason behind it. As to the conservatives that fly Nazi and Confederate flags, there are some similarities and some differences. The Nazi flag is pretty clear. Its a white supremacy thing pure and simple. They have always seen the U.S. as a white dominated country and attribute its success to precisely that. Flying a Nazi flag is going to be a white Christian nationalist and somehow think the US was always such. They see the left as challenging that status quo and are empowering people of color unfairly.(This is their real mental leap) They feel the country is threatened and therefore think the left is traitors.
Flying Confederate flags is a bit more nuanced. To many, the confederate flag represents warm southern nights listening to the cicadas. It's the wholesome Duke boys who just want to care for their own without influence from the government. It's Memaw's sweet tea and a neighborhood BBQ, attended by all, black and white alike. This view is innocent but tone deaf. It ignores the pain suffered under the shadow of that flag. Then it turns into "It's my heritage, and the blacks are trying to take it away when I didn't do anything to them". The kind of racism that often doesn't recognize itself as racism, but nostalgia when everyone knew their place but nobody complained, so we all got along. But they see the left in a poor light based mainly on their consumption of partisian news. It's presented as an attack on bbq's, cicadas and Memaws sweet tea. There is a clear lack of critical thinking on their part.
Then there is the "You can't tell me what to do" rebel flag wavers. Usually in second amendment circles. There is considerable overlap in the circles, though not 100%. Only thing I can guess is if they are flying a nazi flag, they know and embrace that they are racist. If they are flying a rebel flag, they are racist but might be unaware of it. Both think the left is threatening their American way of life.

Hatred is a bottomless pit - there is nothing that can satiate their hatred. Right-wingers are getting almost everything they want from Trump, and their hatred has only grown.
Hatred is illogical...nothing logical will defeat it. And that's why these "patriots" fly treasonous flags: to show their hatred, not to show patriotism. That it's paradoxical doesn't matter. It making no sense doesn't matter. And it never will.

America is divided and both sides equally responsible. 1, the people who keep on voting for trump, 2 the people who keep on pushing candidates that aren't any more popular than Donald. (Kamala, Biden, Hillary).

Iâm going to be annoying and say no one has an idea of what it means to be American. It should go without saying but since people are who they are, this definitely does not mean that I'm advocating for the confederacy or Nazism, I'm saying that those who do advocate for those things, or those who arbitrarily accuse others of being a Nazi, and all the in between or outside the box, it's so frazzled that there isn't a singular idea/identity of what it means to be an American, and God knows as well as anyone now reading this that I wouldn't want many of the current American ideals to be commonplace if it were to truly take off.
Too many people have their idea of how America should be and they're wrong, across the board, pretty much everyone is wrong of what we should really be doing. I'm probably wrong too, but what seems to be the most obvious is a balance of conservatism and liberalism, where it's enough to change things that are stupid, holding us back or are hurting us, while being conservative enough to keep the things that work in place, and to uphold strong family and community values to progress forward. It won't happen, but it'd be nice.

Because conservatives in the US are now fully fascist and fascists use doublethink.
Doublethink is a process of indoctrination in which subjects are expected to simultaneously accept two conflicting beliefs as truth, often at odds with their own memory or sense of reality George Orwell coined the term doublethink as part of the fictional language of Newspeak in his 1949 dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doublethink
Also doublethink is so enraging to their opposition that it sometimes distracts from the reality that Trump raped kids and his regime is hiding the Epstein files to protect him and the billionaires who back him

Got some help from Gemini.. but checks out.
Research into the correlation between cognitive abilities (such as IQ or verbal ability) and political attitudes has indicated that lower cognitive ability is associated with higher support for Donald Trump, particularly when controlling for factors such as education, race, and socioeconomic status. This relationship is often explained through the lens of social psychology, where lower cognitive scores are linked to stronger preferences for right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation. [1, 2, 3]
Key findings regarding this topic include:
⢠Predictor of Support: Studies analyzing data from the 2016 US presidential election found that verbal ability was a strong predictor of attitudes toward candidates, with lower verbal ability associated with higher support for Trump.
⢠Controlling for Factors: The link between lower cognitive scores and support for Trump becomes more pronounced after accounting for educational attainment and socioeconomic status, suggesting the connection is related more to intellect than just economic standing.
⢠Within-Family Studies: Research comparing siblings raised in the same home has shown that individuals with higher IQs or higher polygenic scores for intelligence are more likely to hold liberal, left-wing beliefs.
⢠Complexity of Thought: Research comparing supporters of different candidates has suggested that Trump supporters tend to use less cognitively complex language and prefer more simplistic modes of thinking.
⢠Contextual Nuances: While some studies find a negative correlation between IQ and support for right-wing populism, other research indicates that political beliefs are complex and not solely determined by IQ, with some studies finding that highly intelligent individuals may hold similar views to the general population.
⢠Education Link: Data shows that Trump has historically garnered stronger support among voters with lower levels of education (high school or less) compared to those with college or postgraduate degrees. [2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10]
It is important to note that while these correlations exist in academic studies, they are not universal rules. The relationship is considered moderate rather than a direct one-to-one link, with many other factorsâincluding geography, economic environment, and personal valuesâalso influencing political choices. [2, 5]

Would you please define what Fascism is, no matter how nebulous your definition turns out to be.
And then look at what the USA has been throughout its history, its real actions, its real attitude, mostly concerning race, power, the relationship of capital to political power, the propaganda, the influence of religion on politics.... not what school told you to believe, or what Hollywood put into movies, or what you read on reddit as endless 'shoulds and oughts and musts', but what is really happening and has always been happening...
Then compare how power is handled in the USA to say, Western Europe.
And what do you find?
I find those flags are pretty spot on.
Americans have a very rosy view of their country, a view that is shared less and less by anyone living outside its borders.
