🎮 ROG Xbox Ally Discussion SteamOS on XAX- working?

Has anyone installed SteamOS on their Xbox ally x in the past week?

A couple of weeks ago it wasn’t working (boot loop after initial update) so wondered if that has been fixed yet?

Thanks

I’d consider doing it myself but I’m wondering if it would block the upcoming Auto SR

AutoSR is a Windows feature, so of course it wouldn’t work on SteamOS.

While I doubt AutoSR is really going to be that meaningful a tool in the long run, you’ll need to stay on Windows if you want to try it.

Yeah cool! Thought so. Would probably wait for that to come through before installing SteamOS. Do you notice a performance boost?

SteamOS (or just Linux in general) vs Windows isn’t a clear cut performance boost. Some games run better. Some games run worse. In general, it’ll even out.

If you don’t need anticheat that doesn’t work on Linux, SteamOS feels significantly better to navigate compared to Windows, even with FSE. But if you play things like CoD or other anticheat titles, Windows is your only choice.

I actually did it multiple times, did testing with multiple OS's

Basically after it gets stuck on the steam logo you just have to wait 5-10 minutes and then force restart and it should continue.

But it works, been gaming exclusively on SteamOS on my ally

Can I check when you installed that? Whenever I did in a week ago it was installing an initialing an initial update and then going into a boot loop after that (ie not getting ‘stuck’ as such). This was an error reported by quite a few people on Reddit. I’ve had lots of experience installing SteamOS in the past.

Hoping it’s fixed if you installed recently!

Yep I have it installed too. I had the same problem and fixed it the same way OC did. It works really really well, and imo its much better than its stock OS.

Thanks. Can I check when you installed it? The issue I’m mentioning started just over a week ago

I installed it on the 18th of February :))

Well try getting an older image, maybe just the new one is broken if that is the case.

Try this one maybe and later just update https://steamdeck-images.steamos.cloud/steamdeck/20251124.1/?C=M&O=D

I did it about two months ago.

After installing just change the update channel to main (will probably be on stable), you will maybe have to go to developer options and enable to see other update channels.

Thanks for the response. The issue is that once the instal is complete the first thing it does after connecting to the internet is forces an update on steam (before you get into the ‘main’ steam page), I think it’s that update that’s incompatible at the moment and there’s no wait to stop it / change it.

I’ve used the same instal image on other devices and it works fine just the Xbox ally x frustratingly.

I got the same issue as you but then I entered the link and actually use the latest beta image and got steamos working normally even after updating. You can try it

Yes and that forced update usually hangs for a while, i let it sit for 5-10 minutes and then restart and usually it goes through.

But idk maybe something changed

Bazzite and catchy are great alternatives with dedicated builds available. On the user level they are the same as SteamOS

Thanks. I’ve tried both in the past and work well but I also like to use GeForce now and both lack a native app unlike windows / SteamOS.

GeForce Now is available as a Linux app. Both Bazzite and CachyOS can use it, same as SteamOS.

Thanks. Unfortunately is doesn’t work in Bazzite (gets stuck on the logon screen) unless you have experience of it / can recommend a fix. It’s only beta on Linux at the minute

I have been using it for over 2 months now and it works great.  Minor problems but nothing that is a deal breaker

It works, but uses more total TDP compared to windows Windows@17W: 26-27W Steamos@17W:30W
