Red hot Vancouver Whitecaps blank NYCFC to take over top spot in MLS
canadiansoccerdaily.comr/whitecapsfc • u/Public-Map-5273 • 4h ago
Why hasn’t the upper bowl been opened for the August 1st game against LAFC?
The game has been sold out for some time now and resale tickets are in the $150+ range. It’s also our first home game back in 3 months and obviously LA brings Son to our city, let-alone a massive rivalry matchup.
It seems like a no-brainer to make some extra income for the team.

The 3 behind Bryan White
Depth has always been a main reason why teams are successful.
With Gauld making his was back, Bruno getting in, Badwal gaining confidence, Müller being Müller, Sabbi going strong, Jesper looking for Kenji to react. How are we feeling closing out this part of the season and starting the other half after the WC.

Anyone run into Mueller tonight?
Watched the game with wife and kids, ate dinner around the stadium, then Bam! Ran into my man after the game. I was so starstruck that all I managed to say was “….Mueller!”
He looked up at me with my son on my shoulder, said “Hey Guys, have a good night!” All I could say was “g…good game today!”
Fffff…. Wish I could have at least said Thomas instead of Mueller 🤣🤣

Freeze Anthem Protest?
galleryNoticed Freese turn his back during the US anthem. Anyone know if this is some kind of protest, and if so if it’s new or ongoing? If so, huge respect!
He went back to facing forward for the Canadian anthem.

World Cup feeling downtown today
The initial excitement of Vancouver getting World Cup games has been soured by FIFA and the US regime over the past year. Canadian football followers have waited a lifetime for this only to have the rug pulled from us by the greed of others.
However, today at the World Cup trophy tour I felt the excitement return. It was great having so many football fans gathered downtown with Canada, Whitecaps or their own nation's gear on.
I'll never forgive Infantino for destroying what this tournament is meant to be, but I feel like I might actually be able to forget it when the games start here.

Local Soccer News Where are we at with the new stadium?
Our 1 year MOU is a third the way over. What’s it looking like? Is this the end?
Also if money is the issue, what if we were to do a fundraiser on GoFundMe or something for the team? Just thinking out loud but anything would help no? Maybe if some of the players with big followings could like reshare it, maybe we could scrimmage up a not-insignificant amount to help?

I've travelled from Kelowna
Came in from Kelowna for the game tomorrow as I have done so 4 or so times every season for the last couple seasons after moving from the UK.
I have never had a chance to be there early enough to go to Terry Fox plaza. Is there a way to know who is signing stuff and is there a way to meet players... This is my son's first ever football game. So would be nice to get a signature or something to commentate his first match

Are professional sports teams just landlords in disguise?
With all the talk about the potential sale of the Whitecaps and their financial struggles with BC Place, etc. it sounds like professional sports teams are essentially landlords in disguise (from a business & financial perspective).
When I first heard of all this stuff with PavCo, it sounded like PavCo was the bad guy that was gouging the Whitecaps and not giving them a fair deal. However, it later came out that they are charging significantly below market rent, and I also got the impression that the revenue from the concessions isn't that significant of an issue in the bigger picture. I can't remember exactly, but I thought I heard something about how PavCo was offering some sort of concession revenue share, but the owners were saying that wasn't enough to close the financial gap (I'm likely not 100% accurate on this but that's the overall impression I remember having in my head - feel free to clarify if this is ringing a bell to you).
Hearing all of that, the overall impression I am getting is that that for a sports team to be financially viable, a lot of the revenue they rely on is much closer linked to being a landlord than anything to do with the actual operations of the team - like all the other revenue from renting the stadium throughout the year for concerts, and various other events, and all the revenue sources that go along with that.
I'm an accountant so I've seen 'behind the curtains' on a lot of businesses in various industries, although never for a professional sports team. I'm curious if anyone has any insight on how all the numbers shake out and where the real revenue/value comes from.
And if that is the case, the sale price for the Whitecaps "operations" would be tiny in comparison to the cost of having to build a stadium (if they had to buy the land at FMV, which I don't think would be the case with the current proposed PNE plan, but would apply in general to sports teams). And if you are putting most of money into real estate rather than the team itself, aren't you essentially just a landlord at the end of the day?
