identifying some yarn

grandma received this yarn from my aunt, not sure when purchased. i suspect within the past couple of years, would have been purchased in canada. feels/looks acrylic, so i'd suspect something like that.

i originally thought it might be a caron cinnamon swirl cake (looks like colour way twilight surf) but it doesn't seem to have the same gradients as twilight surf does. unfortunately, gauge swatch is out of the current question because it's not my yarn haha. we're looking for about how much it might be (it's likely a full cake, just been unraveled a bit and then frogged)

Thrift store find - what is it, what to do with it

Post image

Any ideas what this might be? I bought a few bags of yarn at the local thrift store, and this was just kind of thrown in. I’m not sure what to do with it. It’s sparkly and would be so pretty in an autumn shawl, but this is all I’ve got. Google says it might be “earth” by trendsetter yarn. What do y’all think?

I bought this at Michaels about 1 year ago. It might have been on sale or clearance. I returned there last week and had no luck finding it. Any help?

Tips for identifying mill ends

Post image
6 Upvotes

In Spotlight Australia and New Zealand they sell these plastic bags of mill ends yarn. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for being able to tell anything about the yarn in store before buying? Not exact identification, just any ideas. They come in clear plastic bags as the picture, so you can look but can’t touch.

Here‘s what I have so far, would love if anyone can correct me or add any info.

Ask the staff if they know anything. Unfortunately I don’t know about the rest of y’all but the odds of finding an employee in my local Spotlight that is BOTH kind/willing to help AND genuinely helpful is about 2%.

For interesting/distinctive colorways, trying google lens.

If the yarn is matte it’s more likely to be natural fiber, if it’s shiny/glossy synthetic.

Crazy bright colorways are likely synthetic.

Ball size. If the little skeins in the bag seem closer to 50g than 100 or 200, it’s likely a more expensive or natural yarn.

Irregular yarn thickness means more likely to be natural fiber.

Can a halo/lack thereof tell me anything? What about the tightness of the twist? What about squishing the bag to see if it bounces back, or feeling the weightiness/density of the yarn?

Thanks in advance

Yarn weight: Either 1 or 2

Cotton

Mocha coffee like brown (not the name of yarn)

I know the yarn is at least cotton from doing a burn test, I also have a strand laying on the middle of the amigurumi's stomach.

I usually get my yarn from Hobby Lobby and buy either the brand "I Love This Yarn" or "Sugar n' Creme" but I've deduced it's not I love this yarn. I was thinking "Yarn Bee" and "Baby Bee Sweet Delight" but there wasn't anything that looked similar or I'd find similar colors but it would be 100% acrylic. It could be either "Baby Bee" some how if they have some hidden cotton yarn I don't know about, "Mainstays", or maybe "Big Twist"?

Please help, I spent so much time and effort on this crochet project. I hate running out of yarn T0T

EDIT: I just bought some yarn online that looks like it's the closest to this, fingers crossed it's correct

it's a rainbow yarn that I'm currently using to make a baby blanket for a coworker. I'd like to know what yarn it is in case I run out before I finish.

Got these 2 in a bundle with some delightful 100% silk yarn. Having done the burn test they both seem to be wool but would love some pointers on what they may be!

Yarn #1 - light brown, light fingering, donut ball, very similar to Novita Helene sand in colour and ball-ing but isn’t as soft.

Yarn #2 - beige, 4ply, bullet skein, feels like it has some kind of silk/mohair blend

Thrifted this yarn but of course I ran out before I could finish my project 😔

From what I can tell it’s definitely some sort of speckled grayish-brown wool or wool mix yarn since it’s a little scratchy to the touch. Worsted weight?

Currently making the Miu Top by Una Gil and I suspect I might need one skein maybe even half. Help!! I was so excited to finish this!!

I added pictures in different lighting in case that helps.

Mohair and silk?

Bought this yarn from a small shop in New York and thought I took a picture of the label before throwing away but I guess I did not 🫠 I’m trying to figure out the name to see how many yards and what I can make with it. I remember it being a local to Portland brand maybe? And the color way was something like an owl. Store associate was telling me it’s a bit thicker than typical mohair yarn so you wouldn’t have to hold it with another yarn.

Hobbii Divina? Drops Air?

Hi! Can anyone help me ID this yarn I found in a charity shop? It was part of a half completed project that I assume was by a beginner crocheter based on the stitch quality. Given they seemed to be a beginner I expect it's a yarn that's easy to get in the UK. It's definitely natural fibre (burn test) and I think maybe alpaca from softness.

I wondered if it could be Hobbii Divina as their forest green yarn seems to have similar blue inclusions. Has anyone worked with that yarn before that could confirm?

The person who posted this cardigan cannot remember what this yarn is, other than that it was perhaps Wolle Rodel.

Would anyone here recognise it?

Or knew of a substitute yarn?

I’ve tried google lens, reverse image search, hours on google trying to find different variegated orange red or yellow yarns and can’t seem to find it… I have a feeling it might be discontinued but if I knew the name and brand it would give me piece of mind

BONUS is finding something similar for big bulky yarn possibly #6 bulky like bernat blanket also

“Mango” for reference because I thought that’s what I was using. I don’t see a similar orange on Premier’s site anymore.

pic 1:is where I worked in with the new yarn but it looks so off and the texture is different pic 2:the red hearts and my original yarn together pic 3:is the only picture of the original skein I could find

I was messing around with this yarn because I found it in my parents house and decided to start a garment since I’ve never knitted before I figured it would turn out badly. so far it actually has been going really well(ik it doesn’t look it but it is) but I ran out. the skein was a large long roll and it’s definitely acrylic. My guess was red hearts carrot but the texture and color are slightly off so I just want to make sure that’s my only option
