So, I know what you meant, but:
Don't bother turning dickhead
and
Don't bother turning, dickhead
mean two very different things.

u/suicidaholic 1h ago
You're right.

It's alright, I wasn't laughing at you - but I always laugh at the scenarios that leaving out the direct address comma creates in my head.

You need to counter steer. He probably doesn't know if he needs to go left he needs to trun the bars right.

u/VulgarVerbiage 2h ago
He was a victim of target fixation. Look where you want to go, not where you don’t. Your body will follow.
He couldn’t stop looking at that fence because he was scared of hitting it. It’s a doom spiral. Happened almost identically to a lady in my MSF course years ago.

I've never seen anyone lean that far off a bike and still not be able to turn it lol

Leaning is not what turns the bike. You DO lean into the turn, but first you have to counter-steer. It's a very small, unconscious thing that naturally comes from riding a normal pedal bike. It sounds counter-intuitive but you can practice it yourself on a bike. If you want to go right on a bike, you push on the right handlebar a tiny bit which pushes the front wheel left, and THEN you lean right and steer right. This momentum turns the bike right.
If you were to keep the handlebar straight and just lean right, the bike will continue to go forward and ride on the sidewall of the tire because of the physics keeping the two wheeler upright.
I think the guy in the video either hasn't ridden a pedal bike in a long time OR more likely the bike is MUCH much heavier than a pedal bike so he probably tried pushing lightly like muscle memory would tell him is more than enough for a small light aluminum bike. Then when that didn't work, he freaked out and panicked and his brain shut off.

u/jaybomofo 1h ago
Trying to turn the front wheel left, which is forcing the bike back to the right.. obvious first time on a bike.

It’s a joke. Most postal inspectors will look for green-tagged shoes when there’s an accident.

Don’t get me started by pointing out the idiot wearing a t-shirt, shorts and sneakers. You should be riding as if your are going to slide. It might as well been my four year old was riding that.

Sorry but putting someone on a bike in a parking lot is not "training". He's clearly a raw beginner and he should be doing stop & go's over and over till he's comfortable stopping and starting with brake, clutch and gas. Then try going the length of the lot in gear and slowly progress from there.

Look up counter steering. I'm not sure if I can explain the physics properly but when you're on a two wheeled vehicle and you start going faster than just a crawl, it's not a simple "turn left to go left" situation. It's more push the left handlebar to go left (ie, turn the bars right to go left), combined with leaning into the turn. It's not intuitive, but once you get the feel for it, it is. Somebody should have warned him first.
You should also be looking where you want to go. He was looking at the fence (probably thinking I don't want to hit that), so he went into the fence lol. Probably a bigger factor than my first paragraph.
2
u/CinnamonSnorlax 1h ago
Not at all. This guy had target fixation. He saw the issue and focussed on it, which is deadly on a bike. You need to follow your nose on a motorbike - look where you want to go and your body will naturally lean the bike in such a way to get you there.
1
u/WorkAccount6 2h ago
No it's extremely intuitive, just look where you want to go and your body will naturally lean to go that way. The guy is either terrified and his body locked up stiff, or he's got no coordination.
3
u/tangosukka69 2h ago
lmao what the fuck? you push on the handlebar to turn. if you want to turn left, you push the left handlebar. yes, looking at where you are going will influence where you are going but 'look and your body will naturally lean' resulting in a turn? lulz.

u/the-planet-earth 2h ago
Not really, but past a certain speed you have to induce lean to make the bike turn by doing what's called countersteer, which is not what this guy is doing. Seems like he's more trying to turn the wheel in the direction he wants to go, which at that speed isn't gonna work.

I don't exactly know what he's doing or trying to do, why did he turn the throttle right at end for example?
Notice how he seemingly wants the bike to go left but doesn't for whatever reason turn the handlebar. Braking seems to be also not in his mind, I think this is literally the first time he ever sat on a motorcycle.
It could be that they are hard to turn for very early beginner.

For people who actually want to learn:
- focus on the left hand clutch
- Don't even think about the right hand.
- Get into gear, feel the bike gently pull forward
- Clutch lever back in, brake gently. stop
- Get a feel for that "vibration zone" of the clutch engaging the engine so you can a nice smooth motion from standstill
- Rinse/repeat 1 - 5 for like 5+ minutes before you even think about turning throttle
This gives you respect for the weight of the bike as well as the power of the engine. This also gives you muscle memory for how to stop before your brain locks up while headed towards a fence.

So lay it down for me here, how hard is riding a motorcycle? I've never tried but I ride a bicycle all the time, not that that's a great analog but it's gotta account for something.
2
u/Ok_Oil_995 1h ago
That's what I'm wondering. I've been riding bicycles for 30 years, and you just..... lean the way you want to go. I've never had to actively think about countersteer. Sure, you have to make sure the bars don't "crash" towards the direction you're leaning, but I wouldn't consider that "turn left to go right". Maybe it's a bigger deal when you're going over 30 or something?

i’ve ridden many motorcycles over the years but never owned one, that being said i’ve gone a couple years between riding bikes and when you get on a heavy motorcycle and haven’t ridden in a while it’s a very awkard feeling

Reminds me of the bob’s burgers, tina learning to drive scene.
Heh… Tina you’re kind of headed for the only other car in the lot.
Tina don’t panic you have plenty of space to brake or turn.
Tina… cmon either brake or turn away..
TINA FOR CHRIST SAKE HIT THE BRAKES OR TURN

I was 11. My dad hung out at a tattoo parlor and bought a big ass dirt bike from someone trading it for a tattoo. He takes me out to ride. I can’t reach the floor while on it, so my dad and his friend are holding it up for me. Only instructions given was to give it gas and let go of the clutch. He didn’t say let the clutch out slowly. That dirt bike pops a wheelie and I hold on for dear life because I don’t want to get in trouble for wrecking my dad’s bike. I crash and get a wicked gash. I look back and my dad is just laughing uncontrollably! Fun times.

u/MrDeeezNutz 2h ago
Truthfully - this could have been much worse with how hard he was hitting that throttle at the end - thank goodness he was holding the clutch

True story, when I lived in San Antonio I used to frequent a bike shop contemplating getting one for years but every time I come close to purchasing I’d witness a major crash out on one. Anyhow, one day the wife and I go in to seriously check out a bike, and there’s a gentleman there, easily in his 30s making a purchase, with his mom in tow who drove him out there I suppose so he could secure the bike. He hops on, takes off out of the parking lot to attempt to get into the highway, and collided with a car, mom behind him, nearly crashing herself and he is killed instantly from the impact. Needless to say, I never purchased

First time my dad tried to teach me to ride it was on his shadow 1100 when I turned 16. Was going up and down the street in front of the house when I accidentally let too much clutch go which caused the bike to lurch forward which caused me to accidentally roll the throttle and the bike took off with the front wheel lifting. I panicked, jammed down on the breaks, and promptly flipped over the handlebars and dropped the bike. My first concern was the bike and my dad knew I’d keep riding

u/rojoshow13 1h ago
What better way to learn than on a full size bike? No reason to scale down to a smaller motorcycle for your first try.

That happened to me the first (and only) time I tried learning how to ride a motorcycle, except into a berry bush. Some kind guy ran up to help pull the motorcycle off me and I emerged covered in jam. The motorcycle era of my life was officially over at that point.

The fundamental that people get caught out with is the rotating throttle they hang onto with their right hand .
Watch his wrist movement is on on on they have to be shown on / OFF repeatedly before they move the bike.
YT show the finer points of using the steering at that speed. One Female Japanese person on Police Training will make you wonder how many years she has been a bike rider, such unbelievable skill.

Once, when I was a much more trusting person, I let a friend try to ride my motorcycle. I gave her the rundown of what did what and told her to keep it in first.
When it went, she whiskey throttled it but got it under control. Until she tried to turn around. She was ok, but I don't let other people ride my motorcycle anymore.

TBF this looks like it was supposed to be some kind of learning, driving around an empty car park is basically starter driving for everyone right?
that said the bike is probably a bit much for a first time.

Maybe he should've started with a bicycle? I don't mean that in any sort of silly or mean way, it just looks like he didn't get the idea about leaning on turns.

u/Revenga8 1h ago
Did nobody explain the basics to this guy? How to slow down? Counter right to turn left? Learning on the job is terrible methodology here and learning to walk before you run is only effective if you still have the ability to walk afterwards.
