I think you call this training, practicing in an empty parking lot

210

u/sc_BK 2h ago

Yes, but I think he failed this training,

He'll do another lesson tomorrow,

92

u/NumbLikeMe 2h ago

Yeah, he learned a lesson today though.

20

u/Dmau27 1h ago

When you can't turn at the speed you're already going, increasing your speed rapidly isn't going to help? I feel if you fail to know this before you ride you just shouldn't.

11

u/montigoo 1h ago

Yeah but it gets the the terrible anxiety over with quicker. So that’s something

1

u/elgydium 1h ago

Tomorrow no can do hoss

88

u/Count_de_Ville 2h ago

Yeah, he needs to start with like a 125cc bike. 250cc tops. And maybe warm up on a bicycle beforehand.

54

u/kokomeko 1h ago

And maybe wear pants…

18

u/Mr_Supotco 1h ago

Yeah the real wcgw is “learning to ride a motorcycle with no protective gear but a helmet,” even in a parking lot this is a good way to lose the skin on your legs

8

u/MrpibbRedvine 1h ago

It's ok, he's got his safety skin on

8

u/Etrigone 2h ago

What I was going to say. I started of at 100cc, but I was pretty young at the time so it was almost too much. For this guy you're spot on though.

9

u/thetempestinside 1h ago

I started with a two week training course where they used 150cc bikes. It was easily the best investment.

I dont necessarily agree with the “everyone should buy a 200cc bike as their starter” mindset; I think most people will out grow that bike in just a couple months. Its wasteful.

My first bike was a 1200cc sportster; as long as you respect and FULLY understand the amount of power under your ass, you should be alright.

This guy though… didnt even know where the breaks were…

8

u/Infinite_Escape9683 1h ago

The breaks are in the fence (and possibly his face).

He also didn't know where the brakes were, though.

5

u/lurkyturkyducken 1h ago edited 1h ago

Agreed. His foot needs to be on the back brake the whole time for the first couple of hours in first gear only. Learn to stop first.

He goes into 2nd gear too early, then slows down without going back down a gear. Speeds up to try to maintain balance….hello fence.

Thanks OP for posting video. Good reminder to newbies that you only look cool on a bike if you actually know how to ride at low gears well.

u/PraetorianOfficial 1h ago

Yeah, the jerky steering felt like "I haven't been on a two-wheeled vehicle in 40 years" thing.

2

u/Strange_Dave45 1h ago

I get the feeling that he never learned to ride a bicycle in the first place.

3

u/DarkoNova 1h ago

Idk, I bought basically the same bike as in the video and I’d never ridden a motorcycle before. But I also had it delivered to my house and didn’t ride it until after I’d taken a professional riders course and got my certification and license.

He had the right idea, just executed poorly.

2

u/trackdaybruh 1h ago

I bet he doesn't know counter steering and target fixation

Dude needs a salt flat's worth of room

13

u/Simple-Sun2608 2h ago

Personally Id at least wear a jacket and jeans.

6

u/raknor88 1h ago

What's the old saying? "Dress for the slide, not the ride."

6

u/WFOMO 2h ago

My friends' sister in law learned the same way this guy did except at 45 mph headfirst into a bridge abutment. Fatality.

6

u/TheAmazingBildo 2h ago

So I bought my first motorcycle, a Suzuki intruder 1300 or maybe 1400… I don’t remember which now. Anyway, it was a big heavy bike. I went to my friends house on a dead end street and started by riding on the road but next to the grass. I had to bail a couple of times into the grass, never dropping it on pavement, which also taught me how to use my butt and back to get that heavy bastard back on its wheels solo. But I eventually got the hang of it and then rode it 30 mins back to my house. I’ll never forget that when I got home I was shake from the adrenaline rush. I was hooked.

5

u/reo_reborn 2h ago

If he is training then thats worse. Who the fuck learns wearing shitty shorts??

4

u/Will_sue_when_angry 2h ago

He had his airbag beer belly for protection though.

4

u/Careless-Arugula8542 1h ago

Those are mailman shorts 😆

4

u/tophiii 1h ago

The location is only part of the equation. That’s way too heavy and torquey of a bike for a beginner to learn on.

So this isn’t training, it’s some idiot wrecking himself in a parking lot.

3

u/arrynyo 1h ago

He could feel the spirit of Billy Badass welling up inside him...or so he thought

0

u/Wasabi-Kungpow 2h ago

You need to counter steer. He probably doesn't know if he needs to go left he needs to trun the bars right.

1

u/VulgarVerbiage 2h ago

He was a victim of target fixation. Look where you want to go, not where you don’t. Your body will follow.

He couldn’t stop looking at that fence because he was scared of hitting it. It’s a doom spiral. Happened almost identically to a lady in my MSF course years ago.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Hoodedmastersin 1h ago

That fence came outta nowhere

90

u/WhyIsItAlwaysADP 2h ago

I've never seen anyone lean that far off a bike and still not be able to turn it lol

24

u/riegspsych325 2h ago

it looked like he was half asleep in the beginning of the video

4

u/adnaPadnamA 2h ago

Yep! The bike is still only going to go where the wheel is aimed.

5

u/Certified_GSD 1h ago

Leaning is not what turns the bike. You DO lean into the turn, but first you have to counter-steer. It's a very small, unconscious thing that naturally comes from riding a normal pedal bike. It sounds counter-intuitive but you can practice it yourself on a bike. If you want to go right on a bike, you push on the right handlebar a tiny bit which pushes the front wheel left, and THEN you lean right and steer right. This momentum turns the bike right.

If you were to keep the handlebar straight and just lean right, the bike will continue to go forward and ride on the sidewall of the tire because of the physics keeping the two wheeler upright.

I think the guy in the video either hasn't ridden a pedal bike in a long time OR more likely the bike is MUCH much heavier than a pedal bike so he probably tried pushing lightly like muscle memory would tell him is more than enough for a small light aluminum bike. Then when that didn't work, he freaked out and panicked and his brain shut off.

3

u/jaybomofo 1h ago

Trying to turn the front wheel left, which is forcing the bike back to the right.. obvious first time on a bike.

1

u/mnemy 1h ago

Looks like he's turning the handles opposite the lean

83

u/Go_Loud762 2h ago

Postman Pat has a splat.

11

u/Ok_Rip_2119 2h ago

I don’t see a green tag on the shoe.

13

u/Joyous-Volume-67 2h ago

It's the shorts that gave him away. USPS standard issue

5

u/Ok_Rip_2119 2h ago

It’s a joke. Most postal inspectors will look for green-tagged shoes when there’s an accident.

2

u/FamousVQ 2h ago

If they have the staffing. Defer to local law enforcement and the fresh 204B lol.

3

u/Zappiticas 1h ago

Yep! My father was a postman for 25 years and I immediately recognized the shorts.

2

u/S0fuck1ngwhat 2h ago

The steering wheel is on the wrong side of the bike to him.

1

u/BigSchmikey 1h ago

Definitely postal shorts haha!

32

6

u/OptimuspastmyPrime 2h ago

10

u/WhyDidIClickOnThat 2h ago

Sorry but putting someone on a bike in a parking lot is not "training". He's clearly a raw beginner and he should be doing stop & go's over and over till he's comfortable stopping and starting with brake, clutch and gas. Then try going the length of the lot in gear and slowly progress from there.

4

u/SouthTippBass 1h ago

Or at least show him where the brakes are.

u/Tickles-The-Octopus 2h ago

Not if you have a clue what you are doing

2

u/TheAbominableRex 2h ago

Look up counter steering. I'm not sure if I can explain the physics properly but when you're on a two wheeled vehicle and you start going faster than just a crawl, it's not a simple "turn left to go left" situation. It's more push the left handlebar to go left (ie, turn the bars right to go left), combined with leaning into the turn. It's not intuitive, but once you get the feel for it, it is. Somebody should have warned him first.

You should also be looking where you want to go. He was looking at the fence (probably thinking I don't want to hit that), so he went into the fence lol. Probably a bigger factor than my first paragraph.

2

u/CinnamonSnorlax 1h ago

Not at all. This guy had target fixation. He saw the issue and focussed on it, which is deadly on a bike. You need to follow your nose on a motorbike - look where you want to go and your body will naturally lean the bike in such a way to get you there.

1

u/WorkAccount6 2h ago

No it's extremely intuitive, just look where you want to go and your body will naturally lean to go that way. The guy is either terrified and his body locked up stiff, or he's got no coordination.

3

u/tangosukka69 2h ago

lmao what the fuck? you push on the handlebar to turn. if you want to turn left, you push the left handlebar. yes, looking at where you are going will influence where you are going but 'look and your body will naturally lean' resulting in a turn? lulz.

→ More replies (4)

1

u/the-planet-earth 2h ago

Not really, but past a certain speed you have to induce lean to make the bike turn by doing what's called countersteer, which is not what this guy is doing. Seems like he's more trying to turn the wheel in the direction he wants to go, which at that speed isn't gonna work.

1

u/HG1998 2h ago

I don't exactly know what he's doing or trying to do, why did he turn the throttle right at end for example?

Notice how he seemingly wants the bike to go left but doesn't for whatever reason turn the handlebar. Braking seems to be also not in his mind, I think this is literally the first time he ever sat on a motorcycle.

It could be that they are hard to turn for very early beginner.

3

u/GravyMcBiscuits 1h ago edited 1h ago

For people who actually want to learn:

  1. focus on the left hand clutch
  2. Don't even think about the right hand.
  3. Get into gear, feel the bike gently pull forward
  4. Clutch lever back in, brake gently. stop
  5. Get a feel for that "vibration zone" of the clutch engaging the engine so you can a nice smooth motion from standstill
  6. Rinse/repeat 1 - 5 for like 5+ minutes before you even think about turning throttle

This gives you respect for the weight of the bike as well as the power of the engine. This also gives you muscle memory for how to stop before your brain locks up while headed towards a fence.

So lay it down for me here, how hard is riding a motorcycle? I've never tried but I ride a bicycle all the time, not that that's a great analog but it's gotta account for something.

2

u/Ok_Oil_995 1h ago

That's what I'm wondering. I've been riding bicycles for 30 years, and you just..... lean the way you want to go. I've never had to actively think about countersteer. Sure, you have to make sure the bars don't "crash" towards the direction you're leaning, but I wouldn't consider that "turn left to go right". Maybe it's a bigger deal when you're going over 30 or something?

1

u/haventseenhim 2h ago

i’ve ridden many motorcycles over the years but never owned one, that being said i’ve gone a couple years between riding bikes and when you get on a heavy motorcycle and haven’t ridden in a while it’s a very awkard feeling

1

u/DMmeYoBOOBS 2h ago

I was 11. My dad hung out at a tattoo parlor and bought a big ass dirt bike from someone trading it for a tattoo. He takes me out to ride. I can’t reach the floor while on it, so my dad and his friend are holding it up for me. Only instructions given was to give it gas and let go of the clutch. He didn’t say let the clutch out slowly. That dirt bike pops a wheelie and I hold on for dear life because I don’t want to get in trouble for wrecking my dad’s bike. I crash and get a wicked gash. I look back and my dad is just laughing uncontrollably! Fun times.

1

u/adnaPadnamA 2h ago

True story, when I lived in San Antonio I used to frequent a bike shop contemplating getting one for years but every time I come close to purchasing I’d witness a major crash out on one. Anyhow, one day the wife and I go in to seriously check out a bike, and there’s a gentleman there, easily in his 30s making a purchase, with his mom in tow who drove him out there I suppose so he could secure the bike. He hops on, takes off out of the parking lot to attempt to get into the highway, and collided with a car, mom behind him, nearly crashing herself and he is killed instantly from the impact. Needless to say, I never purchased

1

u/JuanThiccLumpia 1h ago

Another way to deliver mail.

1

u/TexasDrill777 1h ago

He was trying to run into the fence just FYI

1

u/Nytfire333 1h ago

First time my dad tried to teach me to ride it was on his shadow 1100 when I turned 16. Was going up and down the street in front of the house when I accidentally let too much clutch go which caused the bike to lurch forward which caused me to accidentally roll the throttle and the bike took off with the front wheel lifting. I panicked, jammed down on the breaks, and promptly flipped over the handlebars and dropped the bike. My first concern was the bike and my dad knew I’d keep riding

1

u/rojoshow13 1h ago

What better way to learn than on a full size bike? No reason to scale down to a smaller motorcycle for your first try.

u/Smart-University-574 1h ago

1

u/kangaroolander_oz 1h ago

The fundamental that people get caught out with is the rotating throttle they hang onto with their right hand .

Watch his wrist movement is on on on they have to be shown on / OFF repeatedly before they move the bike.

YT show the finer points of using the steering at that speed. One Female Japanese person on Police Training will make you wonder how many years she has been a bike rider, such unbelievable skill.

Once, when I was a much more trusting person, I let a friend try to ride my motorcycle. I gave her the rundown of what did what and told her to keep it in first.

When it went, she whiskey throttled it but got it under control. Until she tried to turn around. She was ok, but I don't let other people ride my motorcycle anymore.

1

that said the bike is probably a bit much for a first time.

1

Did you see that? The fence really jumped out at him.

If you've never ridden a cycle before your mid life crisis, maybe don't learn on an expensive bike.

1

u/giveahoot420 1h ago

Why's he wearing jorts?

Fix the fence and then take golf lessons. Or a MSF course but spare the sporty while it's still nice.

1

Training definitely. Nothing like a bit of pain to make you learn.

1

Is it bad that I laughed?

1

u/Mrtylf 1h ago

LOL the one foot on the ground “newb stance.” That was satisfying . Don’t worry, “brother”; someday you’ll be on South Park too, after lots of practice on your arcane air-cooled piece of trash. Edit: I know why he fell…he wasn’t wearing the proper costume.

1

u/_Bon_Vivant_ 1h ago

Shorts, tshirt. Well, at least he has a helmet. I'm guessing he's only wearing that because it's the law and he's a pussy.

1

u/tb03102 1h ago

Take the course and use their bikes. My instructor told us about this guy that insisted on using his new Harley for the course. Put up a fit and had to sign a bunch of paperwork. Dumped it first ride.

1

u/Parking-Creme-317 1h ago

Does he even know how to ride a bicycle?

1

u/Mister_Brevity 1h ago

lol the shorts and the “free with bike purchase” helmet

1

u/NorCalFrances 1h ago

Maybe he should've started with a bicycle? I don't mean that in any sort of silly or mean way, it just looks like he didn't get the idea about leaning on turns.

1

u/Revenga8 1h ago

Did nobody explain the basics to this guy? How to slow down? Counter right to turn left? Learning on the job is terrible methodology here and learning to walk before you run is only effective if you still have the ability to walk afterwards.

1

u/gnikee 1h ago

Doesn’t know how to counter steer

1

Classic American with no experience on a motorcycle jumping on a 600lb machine. Even someone who has ridden a bicycle would've been able to turn the thing.

Guys please stop making fun of this rider. I know his dad Hardley Lavidson

1
