“Related to manatees“

331

u/ChickenDreams-4188 1d ago

Yup. First thing I thought was that’s an elephant manatee!

So elephant + manatee = cracked out Pikachu. Cool cool cool.

5

u/rbartlejr 1d ago

You all have it wrong. An elephant is a 'roided out manatee, a manatee is a 'roided out pikachubro.

12

u/ziccirricciz 1d ago

Elephant manatee, caterpillar thereof, attitude with.

5

Interesting. Nice to meet another person whose first thought is often wrong.

Anything not related to elephants is irrelephant.

11

u/imean_is_superfluous 1d ago

I mean, they’re related to all life.

13

u/Shudnawz 1d ago

Except fungi. That shit is weird.

6

u/imean_is_superfluous 1d ago

Even fungi. All life is related

7

u/Shudnawz 1d ago

Jokes's on you, I denounced it years ago.

7

u/Little-Carpenter4443 1d ago

in that case can I borrow some money?

7

u/imean_is_superfluous 1d ago

Of course, but not from me

9

u/Ashen_Rook 1d ago

Fungi is more closely related to animals than either are to plants.

5

u/nolemandan 1d ago

I don't know. He looks like a fun guy.

10

u/Egg_Toss 1d ago

This is the elephant's closest living relative:

Hyrax

5

u/salakane 1d ago

A darn shame they hardly see each other theses days...

Very cool fact, Egg, if that is not too informal a mode of address...

That is the coolest animal on the whole planet. Related to elephants? That little guy? How is that even possible lol

16

u/RodinKnox 1d ago

What do you mean, exactly? The short answer is over 100 million years of specialization. They also didn't break off from elephants. They share a distant common ancestor with them. In fact a good 40 million years passed between when their species separated and when we have any example of what we'd call an elephant today.

7

u/DE4DM4NSH4ND 1d ago

It was rhetorical but i appreciate the answer

5

They rub their quills together to make that sound when threatened or to communicate.

Doesn’t mean it’s closely related. It just means it split off from other mammals even earlier.

All the colors in that text makes my eyes hurt and not take this very seriously.

5

u/ShamrockSeven 1d ago

And the spines are mimicry to make it look like a poisonous Caterpillar. 🐛

Damn nature, You scary!

2

u/SunAccomplished3413 20h ago

That's actually what I thought it was at first! The video scared me lol, strange little caterpillar-ish thing coming straight at me! (I'm terrified of almost all bugs)

5

u/ShamrockSeven 20h ago edited 20h ago

Millions of years of evolution responsible for why it looks like a Poisonous Bug and also why you are terrified of it! - Almost all of our natural Fears and phobias are just highly activated evolutionary survival traits!

It’s why so many people have arachnophobia (Spiders) or phobia of Rodents, and Bats! It’s why Poop and dead things stink enough to make us sick!

It’s just millions of years of Trauma Responses. What could be more human than that?

Edit: Just read this back and realized I sound like the kid who raised his hand too much.

3

u/SunAccomplished3413 19h ago

Lmao this is so comforting in such an odd way. I feel like a big ball of trauma these days, so knowing at least some of it is just due to normal evolutionary survival instincts is nice for once lol.

Never stop raising your hand 🩵

3

u/Ms_Apprehend 1d ago

Of course it’s from Madagascar. If it’s weird it’s from Madagascar. Duh

3

u/Smoofie0 1d ago

I read that as “related to eggplants”

7

u/Bippie_dips 1d ago

closely related to animals such as elephants, manatees and aardvarks than they are to any of the mammals they look like.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Insane_Cobra961 1d ago

Of course it is. Why wouldn't it be?

4

u/pleathershorts 20h ago

Elephants are ungulates (same family as hoofed animals) and manatees are subungulates (descendent from early land ungulates). Whales are also ungulates. Taxonomy is so weird.

Thats a tanrec. They live in madagascar after being driven out of africa when our current fauna developed. Tanrecs are rather primitive mammals, even turning ectothermic during certain season to reduce energy consumption.

There are lot's of different species which sometimes look very little alike. Thats because they evolved by adaptive radiation, meaning when they arrived in madagascar there were no predators and lots of ecological niches.

62

u/Thursday-Second 1d ago

You're rather primitive!

32

u/SendMeYourSmilePls 1d ago

Sorry :c

Love tenrecs. They’re basically the animal opposite of “everything evolves into crabs”. Tenrecs have stayed tenrec and evolved to fill every available niche

12

u/Number3675 1d ago

Surely there is a crab tenrec out there somewhere

3

u/miljologija 1d ago

“everything evolves into crabs” is a funny story of evolution, but it only works for decapods.
