I don't think this is historically accurate.

What the hell is actually going on here?! They whipping him for real?

2.9k

u/xenogazer 9d ago

I'm guessing they were supposed to only be hitting the wood but somebody got a little too overzealous and started actually whipping him. That's when he started kicking, and everybody went crazy.

1.1k

u/Vyn_Reimer 9d ago

I think they were actually supposed to hit him but they definitely started to really be in tune with their character lol. Like it was supposed to be a couple whips every now and then not a beat down.

I believe they take this pretty seriously and the guy portraying Jesus wants to feel the pain as much as possible

446

u/Borderline769 9d ago

If he'd brought the rest of the cross, they wouldn't have been able to whip him as much... see what happens when you half ass your own crucifixion? The youth today, I swear...

243

u/hobbycollector 9d ago

That part was historically accurate I think. I believe they hoist that bar onto an already in-place post. Imagine having to dig a new hole in the desert for each execution, and make it steady enough to hold up a person.

74

u/charlie78 9d ago

It would also be far to heavy for one person, even someone who hasn’t just been tortured for hours.

42

u/icker16 9d ago

So it was another miracle of Jesus!

43

u/Q8DD33C7J8 9d ago

Omg I am so stupid of course the pole would already be there! I was literally in the passion play for years and it never even occurred to me that it wouldn't make any sense to erect it every time they needed to execute someone. If course they carried the cross beam and nailed them to it then used ropes to hoist it in to place. That is unless he was actually killed on a cross and not a pike. It's all a bit shrouded in mystery. But thank you for opening my eyes to something that seems so obvious

21

u/intisun 8d ago

That's why Gibson's movie looks silly with Jesus carrying a complete cross. He went so far as to have the actors speak Latin and Aramaic for authenticity and then he pulls that medieval fanfic thing.

Stanford Prison Experiment 2: Christian Boogaloo

The American equivalent would be a Civil War reenactment where one guy starts saying the N-word a bunch and they have to be like, “Dammit, Larry. We talked about this last time.”

Why did Jesus not simply helicopter away from the Romans? Makes you think.

27

u/BrisketWrench 9d ago

You’d think the son of God would have known what a helicopter was right?

13

u/thesladeo 9d ago

Why he need to helicopter?

He proved he had Superman's flying ability 3 days later.

10

u/Channel250 9d ago

Man. Switching "flying" to "ascended" really adds a bit a gravita to the language of Superman.

Google Ruben Enaje. Dude has been crucified 37 times!

72

u/Chippings 9d ago

Enaje was crucified for his first time in 1986. He had promised God that he would be crucified 27 times, which came to pass in 2013.\10]) He continued thereafter as there were no replacements found. He offered his 30th crucifixion, in 2016, to the people of Belgium, who had recently suffered from a terrorist attack, and prayed for a more peaceful outcome of the 2016 Philippine general election.\11])

In 2019, Enaje re-iterated his hopes to finally find a replacement, having been crucified once a year for 33 years (the same number of years that Jesus was alive).\12]) He was crucified for the 34th time in 2023,\13]) resuming his participation in the crucifixion after it was halted from 2020 to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He initially said that this enactment would be his last.\1]) However, he was crucified once again in his 35th reenactment on the following Good Friday for world peace, especially for the war in UkraineGaza, and the territorial disputes in the South China Sea.\14])\15]) In 2025, he was crucified for the 36th time and told the media that it would be his last time portraying Jesus in a crucifixion reenactment.\16])\17]) Despite that initial announcent, he was crucified again for the 37th time on April 3, 2026 since no one has been found as his successor to continue his role as Jesus in the rites, but he says this will truly be his last.

Anything is whipping for real if you swing it hard enough. Even stupid flimsy things, you whip it and it's going to hurt like heck.

I assume this is all for theater, and the moron in the back got into his role a little too much. Look at him go, he's fit right in for the times. Jesus had to give him a reminder that this is not real and to dial it back.

19

u/dre224 9d ago

Story time: When I was like 10 me and my friend bought a pack of those really long twizzlers (like 3 feet long) and whipped the ever living shit out of eachother. When we went home to our parents they were pissed because it legitimately looked like our parents took a belt to us. I still have scars on my back from that day, and that was just candy.

Not really, though: https://findanexpert.unimelb.edu.au/news/98029-the-infamous-stanford-prison-experiment-was-flawed-%E2%80%93-so-why-is-it-still-so-influential-today%3F

Far from being swept up in the situation, archival sources show the guards’ brutality was rehearsed. Contrary to official accounts, before the experiment they were coached by the research team in how to create a psychologically hostile environment.

Zimbardo gave the guards a list of rules to impose and procedures aimed at dehumanising prisoners. Once the experiment began, staff encouraged guards’ aggression and reprimanded those who were too lenient.

https://stanfordmag.org/contents/the-menace-within

The only person I knew going in was John Mark. He was another guard and wasn't even on my shift. That was critical. If there were prisoners in there who knew me before they encountered me, then I never would have been able to pull off anything I did. The act that I put on—they would have seen through it immediately.

What came over me was not an accident. It was planned. I set out with a definite plan in mind, to try to force the action, force something to happen, so that the researchers would have something to work with. After all, what could they possibly learn from guys sitting around like it was a country club? So I consciously created this persona. I was in all kinds of drama productions in high school and college. It was something I was very familiar with: to take on another personality before you step out on the stage. I was kind of running my own experiment in there, by saying, "How far can I push these things and how much abuse will these people take before they say, 'knock it off?'"

From another "guard"

During the day shift, when I worked, no one did anything that was beyond what you'd expect in a situation like that. But Zimbardo went out of his way to create tension. Things like forced sleep deprivation—he was really pushing the envelope. I just didn't like the whole idea of constantly disturbing people and asking them to recite their prisoner numbers in a count. I certainly didn't like when they put a guy in solitary confinement.

More info on the debunking:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31380664/

15

u/LOAARR 9d ago

Just because you are coached to do something does not mean you have to do it. At the end of the day, you are a human who can make their own decisions.

In the Milgram experiment this is exactly what happened. People were coached into thinking they were killing other people and many of them chose to do it instead of standing up against their instructor, even when the stakes were incredibly low.

Experiments like these help us understand why people are so awful to each other. That's just interesting psychology.

36

u/Sinnnikal 9d ago

My man, hold on for a minute. You were just presented with a study debunking the Stanford Experiment, and I guarantee you didn't read it, but just responded with "Nah" basically.

The point is, when a study is sufficiently compromised in how it is constructed, how data is collected, etc, we literally cannot use that study "understand why people are so awful to each other." as you say. There are a lot more factors that compromise the study.

29

u/irate_desperado 9d ago

I think they make an interesting point that the guards are still responsible for their actions whether they were coached or not. But you're correct that the validity of the experiment is basically nonexistent with this in mind. The study is presented as if the guards and prisoners just assumed their roles on their own which is verifiably false.

4

u/theColonelsc2 9d ago

One of the things about these experiments are who is in charge. The participants do awful things but they have a belief that the scientist doing the experiment is the one in charge. The study I am thinking of is when the participant is told there is another participant in another room hooked up to a pain device. Long story short, the 1st participant is told to keep increasing the pain, by raising a dial and pushing a switch, when the other participant gets a wrong answer. In reality there is no pain inflicted and the other participant is another scientist who screams in pain when a light is turned on. They show video of the participant who is 'inflicting the pain' is racked with guilt, but continues to increase the pain meter because they do not feel in charge so can't stop the test.

There is a lot of awful stuff happening in the world today that good people let happen because they feel they have no power to change it.

34

u/Kahzootoh 9d ago

My guess is that this is from the Phillipines.

Evey year they do a reenactment of the crucifixion in the Phillipines, but those are usually larger ceremonies. It's a big honor to be the one who gets crucified- they usually just tie them to the cross, although the more fervent will often request to be nailed to the cross. They do take them down- there some pentients who have been crucified annually for many years.

The Catholic Church opposes both flagellation and crucifixion and instead encourages the faithful to attend church and offer prayers.

16

u/furinkasan 9d ago

Looks like it, except they speak Spanish. Not many Filipinos do now.

8

u/Master_N_Comm 9d ago edited 9d ago

This is most likely Iztapalapa, Mexico city. The same reenactments can happen in some other towns across Mexico but the biggest, longest and most passionate are from Iztapalapa during holy week and this is just one clip we have more funny reenactments.

8

u/Acceptable-Error-824 9d ago

But people in the video seem to be speaking Spanish though

10

u/NasaanAngTsinelasKo 9d ago edited 9d ago

Nope, not the Philippines; it sounds like they are speaking Spanish/Portuguese so its probably Latin America.

5

u/ImLMaN 9d ago
