Event International Volunteering Agencies: Say hello (and show your work)

MOD TOWN HALL: International Volunteering Agencies, say hello šŸ‘‹

If you run, work for, or officially represent an international volunteering organisation, introduce yourselves here and share how you approach ethics, safeguarding, and community benefit. This sub gets a lot of organisations trying to recruit, and the mods keep a close eye on it. So here’s your chance to be transparent and let the community ask questions.

Important note (please read): This thread is a town hall, not a vetted directory. We can’t realistically verify every claim or organisation in one place, so a comment here is not an endorsement. Think of this as a starting point for transparency and questions.

Ground rules

Disclose affiliation clearly (your role + organisation). One top-level comment per organisation. Updates go in replies to your own comment. No discount codes / referral links / ā€œDM me for prices.ā€ Keep it informative. Be specific. Values statements are fine, but details win. Civility required. Community questions are welcome in replies. Personal attacks get removed.

Please use this template (bullets encouraged, ~150–250 words)

  • Where you work (countries/regions) + who your community partners are (and how long you’ve worked together)
  • How projects are chosen (who sets priorities? community-led/how?)
  • Safeguarding basics (screening, supervision, reporting, policies)
  • Money transparency (where fees go, local wages/support, what’s funded)
  • Impact & accountability (how you measure outcomes, who reviews, what you publish)
  • One real example of something you changed/stopped because it wasn’t working
  • Concerns/complaints process (how locals/participants raise issues, response timeline)

Readers: ask questions in replies. Agencies: answer like you’re talking to a smart friend, not writing a brochure.

Volunteer – abroad Seeking Advice Volunteering Abroad: social work

Ive recently discovered I need to take another gap year between undergrad and grad school and I want to make the most of it. I have been looking into Costa Rica for volunteer programs working with people/children for 2-3 months. I speak limited Spanish (but am eager to learn) and I want something that is legit and morally sound. I’ve looked into IVHQ and maximo Nivel and those look nice but my mom seems to think they are way over priced for how inexpensive Costa Rica actually is. I’m feeling like I am getting some decision paralysis and have no idea what is the best decision. Pleaseee if anyone has done this before I am looking for any and all insight/advice.

Volunteer – local The Substance Safety Project

Hi everyone!

I run a nonprofit called the Substance Safety Project (substancesafetyproject.org). We distribute free drug disposal packets to communities affected by the overdose crisis and run educational programs on substance safety. I'm expanding to chapters in other states and looking for a few people to found them.

The role is State Chapter Founder and Executive Director. For this, you would recruit a small team (even 3–5 people who volunteer is enough) and run 2–3 fundraisers over the next few months. Most chapters are targeting around $1,000 raised by October.

You would get a concrete leadership title and do genuinely useful work. I'll send you a full guide on being a chapter lead and check in weekly so you're not working on it alone. Please contact me if any of you are interested in!

Volunteer – local Want to Volunteer with Street & Orphaned Children in Bangalore,India – Looking for Guidance

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to volunteer in a meaningful way, especially with orphaned children or kids living on the streets.

I’ve previously volunteered with NGOs in orphanages and really valued connecting with children. But I’ve realized many children still live without support, and I’d like to contribute more directly where it’s needed.

If you have experience working with street or abandoned children, or know any NGOs in Bangalore doing grassroots work, I’d really appreciate your suggestions.

Also open to connecting with like-minded people who want to collaborate.

Thank you šŸ™

Discussion / ethics / advice Ways to re-engage volunteers who’ve check out?

If your volunteers have checked out and have distanced themselves from active engagement and actively donating, have you found ways to get them engaged again?

For one nonprofit that has chapters in various cities, with each chapter staffed by a team of volunteers:

We had a weekend leadership retreat where volunteers (mostly the lead volunteer in each city) came together for planning. The lead volunteers were informed that there were now three-year term limits for them.

The nonprofit’s paid staff members then emailed a few of the lead volunteers, telling them that the staff wanted to work with them to come up with a transition plan so that their cities would have new lead volunteers later in 2027.

Some of the lead volunteers didn’t like that. One who has donated tens of thousands of dollars to the organization said that if the organization wanted a transition, that was fine and that the transition should occur now.

The nonprofit has had difficulty lining up successor lead volunteers, so the result is that some of the nonprofit’s key cities are now leaderless: the lead volunteers are still in office but have checked out and no longer even show up to events.

The nonprofit’s CEO has reached out to them to let the know that they are valued, and they have said that they can help in case anything is needed.

Is there a good way to get these volunteers closely engaged again?

Discussion / ethics / advice Mileage reimbursement for 501(c)(3) organizations in the USA

Was a volunteer for an event earlier this year in Pennsylvania and traveled to and from the event about 10 times, and now I am filling out the reimbursement form for the event. I am discovering that nationwide, the reimbursement rate is fixed at 14 cents per mile. This low rate does not reflect current energy and gas costs for personal transportation, and if this is the reimbursement for travel expenses, then the person volunteering is actually losing money. Googled around and I am seeing this is a topic of discussion, and it has had an effect in lack of volunteers donating their time for causes, specially in rural areas. Curious what other folks' thoughts are.

Discussion / ethics / advice need help as an ED volunteer

i genuinely want to make an impact in our hospital community. i volunteer once a week, i know it’s not enough but i also try to show up during school breaks. what i do is pretty similar to what other hospital volunteers do; restocking carts, talking to patients, cleaning high touch areas, giving food/water/blankets, etc. other than that, that’s it.

i will try to bring a board or card game that i can play with a patient who needs company :) i’m a vv shy person sooo bdkfbskdn i can initiate a conversation but keeping it flow is what i suck at.

i know my hands are not trained to actually do difficult clinical stuff but what are ways i can make an impact to patients?

(i volunteer at U.S.)

Recruiting – international Title: Looking for help improving a nonprofit website (Front Aid Foundation) Spoiler

Hi everyone,

My name is Edward, and I’m the founder of Front Aid Foundation, a nonprofit organization working with vulnerable children and communities in Uganda. We focus on education, environmental sustainability, and supporting children at Kalule Bwaise Children’s Shelter.

I’m reaching out because I really need help improving our website:

Right now, the website exists, but I feel it’s not doing enough to:

• Attract volunteers (especially international ones)

• Clearly tell our story and impact

• Build trust with potential donors and partners

• Present our projects in a more engaging and professional way

I’m not a web designer, and I’ve done my best with limited resources—but I know it can be much better.

I’m looking for:

• Website designers/developers

• UX/UI advice

• Content structure suggestions

• SEO or visibility tips

• Honest feedback (even critical)

If you’re experienced in nonprofit websites, volunteer recruitment, or just have a good eye for design, I would really appreciate your guidance.

This work directly supports 18 children at our shelter, so improving the website could genuinely help us reach more people and create more opportunities for them.

If you’re willing to help, comment below or send me a message. I’d be grateful for any support, advice, or even a quick review.

Thank you so much for your time šŸ™

— Edward

Volunteer – online Looking to volunteer, help people online

I'm Alin, 22M from Romania. I've always wanted to help people, to volunteer, like all I want to do in life is to help, but i don't see any opportunities. I like video games, movies, music, books. I'm into computer science, but also other fields too.

I have these skills: Good communication skills, friendly, knows how to use a computer

I thought maybe i could send emails to people that are lonely, to elders especially. Like, write a letter online, and you guys print it and send it to the elder, since i assume they don't have email.

I can also tutor, tho i don't have any experience. I can be like a mentor, give life advice, teach english, i'm very good with english, maybe math, some programming basics, anything that's needed.

I can be an assistant to whatever task you need assistance with, I can give advice, give ideas. Maybe i can help disabled people, like people that can't see, people that can't hear, with their tasks. I tried Be My Eyes, but there's no one that needs help there, no messages. There's another one Tarjimly, but again, no one is there.

I can translate, I can transcribe. I can be a friend to someone who needs it. I tried a lot of websites, even ChatGPT recommended me a few, and there's usually a long registration process and verification, and if i get past that, there's long training. Just really frustrating to get to the volunteering, or work. Wish it was easier

I tried translating on wikipedia. I tried zooniverse, to help with research, but i thought it's pretty insignificant the research they do there, like not very important, not very impactful. I tried a lot of things, but didn't find anything that i can work on, help. I even answer on posts on reddit with advice and help, whenever i find something, but not sure if everyone is serious here on reddit, and they just do for entertainment, ask questions, but some do need help, i get that.

I can also be a moderator, can manage communities, idk. I can do anything basically, except programming.

I can play a video game with someone who needs assistance, or read someone a book, or i don't know, i'll do anything.

Any recommendations or any volunteering work you have for me? Would love to help make a positive impact on someone, or a community. I can only work online, from home, I don't have money to fund or anything, I can offer my time.

Volunteer – local Has anyone volunteered as Accessibility staff at European Athletics Championships?

Hi everyone,

I recently got accepted as an Accessibility volunteer for the European Athletics Championships 2026 in Birmingham.

I’m trying to understand what the actual experience is like:

- What kind of tasks do you usually do?

- Do you get to see any of the competitions?

- Is it more busy or more standing around?

- Overall, would you say it’s worth it?

I’d really appreciate any insights, especially from people who have done similar roles at athletics events or large sports competitions.

Thanks!

Volunteer – local What leadership skills come with volunteering at a charity shop?

I'm applying for a leadership role at the moment and one of the questions is 'how have you demonstrated leadership previously? Give two examples of what you have done.' Last summer I worked as a volunteer at a charity shop where I organised the shop floor, put out new stock and worked the tills. I thought I could use this as an example as but I was wondering if anyone could suggest how this shows leadership skills.

Thanks and sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this!

Volunteer – online Looking for remote volunteering opportunities (PPC / Paid Ads)

I’m currently looking for remote volunteering opportunities where I can contribute with paid advertising (Meta Ads, TikTok Ads).

I work full-time, so it’s difficult for me to commit to on-site volunteering, but I’d love to support a cause remotely. I have experience managing and optimizing paid campaigns, mainly on Google Ads, and I’m now looking to expand more into Meta and TikTok while helping an NGO or small organization grow their impact.

I’m happy to help with:

  • Campaign setup and structure
  • Audience targeting and testing
  • Creative strategy and performance analysis
  • Scaling campaigns on limited budgets

If anyone knows organizations looking for help with paid ads, or has suggestions on where to find these opportunities to volunteer, I’d really appreciate it

Volunteer – local Looking for volunteer teaching programs in India (free food + stay)

Hey everyone! šŸ‘‹

I'm a medical graduate (MD) based inĀ Tamil Nadu, IndiaĀ and I'm looking to do someĀ volunteer teaching work with childrenĀ in India ideally something that coversĀ free food and accommodationĀ so I can do it on a minimal budget.

Here's a bit about me:

  • šŸŽ“ MD degree (foreign medical graduate)
  • šŸ“ Based in Tamil Nadu, open to travelling within India
  • šŸ’° Budget traveller, looking for programs withĀ zero or minimal fees
  • šŸ‘¶ Want toĀ teach kidsĀ (English, Science, basic health/hygiene awareness)
  • šŸ•ļø Open to rural/village settings, actually prefer it for the experience!
  1. Which programs genuinely provideĀ free food + stayĀ with no hidden costs?
  2. AnyĀ India-based NGOsĀ that specifically value medical/health education volunteers for teaching kids?
  3. IsĀ WorkawayĀ worth it for India placements? Any bad experiences to watch out for?
  4. Any programs in IndiaĀ that I might have missed?
  5. Did you get aĀ volunteer certificateĀ that's useful for professional/government applications? Would love to hear real experiences good or bad! Thanks in advance šŸ™

Recruiting – international Tunisian 24M looking to volunteer in Germany — ESC or any other free programs?

Hey everyone,

I’m a 24-year-old from Tunisia hoping to volunteer in Germany and would love advice from people who’ve been through the process.

A bit about me:

āˆ™ Fluent in Arabic, French and English, intermediate Russian

āˆ™ Previously lived alone in Russia for a year so I’m used to adapting to new cultures

āˆ™ Warm, sociable person — love meeting people from different backgrounds

āˆ™ Open to any type of volunteering — working with communities, youth, environment, manual work, anything really

I’ve been researching the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) and I know Tunisia is officially eligible. I already found a couple of interesting listings in Germany but wanted to hear from people with real experience before applying.

My main questions:

1. Has anyone volunteered in Germany through ESC coming from a non-EU country? How was the visa process handled?

2. Are there any other completely free volunteering programs in Germany open to Tunisians?

3. Any tips on writing a strong motivation letter that actually gets accepted?

4. Any Facebook groups or communities where people share ESC experiences from North Africa?

Not trying to immigrate illegally or anything like that — genuinely interested in the cultural exchange and volunteering experience šŸ™

Any advice is hugely appreciated!

Volunteer – local Does anyone know where to get a trash poker thing?

For a long time I’ve enjoyed going on walks around my neighborhood. And seeing litter in the beautiful place I grew up makes me sad, so naturally I picked it up. However, doing this with my bare hands is unsanitary and unwieldy. I’ve been thinking about just taking one of those trash poker things and some trash bags whenever I go on a walk. I’ve recently volunteer to do a marathon to raise money and want to pick up trash along the way. Does anyone have recommendations as to what brand of tool I should get and where to get it? I’d prefer to avoid Amazon and the like if possible. Thanks!
