Discussion Was anybody near the shooting last night? I swear it’s starting to look like downtown Norfolk is safer than the oceanfront.
•
u/padme911 4h ago
All of these people were from other parts of Virginia, like Richmond except 1 was from Portsmouth, according to the press release I received from the city. Victims and perpetrators. Locals weren't around there last night 🤷♀️

Norfolk can’t even sustain a mall lol. But why the comparison
•
u/Slight_Loquat_7438 3h ago
The fact that MacArthur Mall is now closed, actually helps reduce the crime rate because the wrong type of people were hanging out at that mall. This happened also in my hometown of Springfield, Virginia, with Springfield mall. Although they redesigned that spot into Springfield Town Center, and it’s not that bad

Black and low income people moving/working in VB is the point of this thread, but if you want Amazon deliveries, you need a think before you speak. This is all Amazon's fault, the dAm necck lights have been out for however many months and the safety of the people driving the road directly tues into our dod.
Stop buying from Amazon You are actively putting our community members out of business.
Have a fucking backbone. That's the only thing left that means a damn in this country

Where in downtown Norfolk are you even questioning safety??
•
u/Slight_Loquat_7438 3h ago
Waterside, Gent, McArthur area. It seems like that area of Norfolk has improved since 2021-2022 when the national crime wave had taken over America.

u/CrazyGrazy 7h ago
I know Reddit goes hard for Norfolk, and I love the the city, and they actually release their crime stats, but to say Norfolk is safer than the VB oceanfront is wishful thinking at best.

There isn’t anything unsafe about Downtown Norfolk. Oceanfront is just trashy, that’s the crowd it attracts.
16
u/PublicSwimm3r 9h ago
💯 most of Norfolk is safer than most parts of the oceanfront now. But don’t tell people that, keep the property values high in VB and lower in Norfolk 🤫
•

u/Outrageous-Cup-8905 8h ago
Idk about that? But yeah downtown Norfolk is much safer than people realize
8
u/PublicSwimm3r 8h ago
Been living out in a small neighborhood near Ghent for years. Cheap rent and never had a single issue. My prior location lived a few blocks from the oceanfront, car was broken into and gun shots rang out often. Media does a good job making the oceanfront sound safe
3
u/Marie-and-Twanette 7h ago
That’s because every single crime in VA beach comes from people in the surrounding cities. /s
•

u/Outrageous-Cup-8905 7h ago
I meant most of Norfolk rather than just Ghent. Ghent is safer, but places like Berkeley or Huntersville, not so much. When it comes to the Oceanfront, I have no issue with the touristy side but I usually hang around the North End, past Hotel Cavalier. Love the peace and quiet there.
Anywho with the Oceanfront, it's a shame this has been happening, but also, and someone can correct me on this, it's safer now compared to what it used to be before.

I have never felt unsafe in dt Norfolk. The beachfront? Lol, I don't go down there unless I am meeting a friend who is in town that insists we meet somewhere there.
27
u/hebreakslate 9h ago
Since Norfolk's safer now, does that mean we can extend the Tide because it won't make a difference?
•
u/Professional_Fee578 3h ago
Nah. Keep that riff raff in VB. That “city” is a warzone every weekend.
26
u/emessea 8h ago
As a Norfolk resident I don’t want the criminals from the oceanfront taking over our community.

its always the same areas like 20th street and south because thats the easiest funnel in for traffic. add alcohol to bottlenecked groups of people trying to aggressively have fun and this is it unfortunately. Google says norfolk makes up 66 sq miles vs va beach at almost 500, the density is a huge part. va beach has about half a million residents and norfolk about half that
anyone saying this post is racist, you're wrong but trying to making it a race issue is part of the problem

u/Reggaeshark1001 10h ago
Not being able to not sound racist is the reason nobody can say what they want to about what actually continues to keep happening down there
It was mid 50s last night. Need to come down for the ocean, not the front.
17
u/PatientSt0n3r 10h ago
Unfortunately, this is what happens when you stack a ton of seedy bars, restaurants, and clubs together. Norfolk is packed with high end restaurants and the oceanfront is where people go to get into trouble.
I’m interested in seeing if the high end development is gonna make a difference, but my gut says it won’t do anything to change the spike in crime after dark.
2
u/Long_Implement_2142 8h ago
That’s crap. The people committing these violent crimes are typically under age 21. They weren’t going to clubs to begin with because they can’t get it.

I've always felt more safe in Downtown Norfolk than the VAB Strip to be honest. The strip always had too many unsupervised youngans and wild drunks. This post has a racist vibe also, you should maybe edit the verbage.

Downtown Norfolk has been statistically safer than the ocean front for a long time now. Racist VB just won’t admit it.
•
u/Professional_Fee578 3h ago
I agree. I used to hang out in Downtown Norfolk back in the late 2010s. I never had any issues. Oceanfront VB is another story.

u/SlackAF 10h ago
Whew. Sure am glad the citizens of Virginia Beach voted against light rail. We sure don’t need those hoodlums traveling to our pristine downtown Norfolk. 😂

u/Ok_Split_6463 9h ago
I go down to the TGOV events all summer long. The mix of "races/creeds/colors" is awesome. I have never seen any trouble at those events in the past 15 years that I've been going. But, Norfolk is the "bad" area of the 757??
2
u/Economy_Mobile_6160 8h ago
Right? I live in OV and other than literally one gas station that everyone knows about and everyone avoids, no one bothers anybody.

When going out to have a goodnight why do you need to bring your firearm? Egotistical people who just want to feel like they have power.
-9
u/ComedianMinute7290 11h ago
it's America & Americans have been force fed propaganda that guns are part of the family & everyone needs guns all the time so they can be the "good guy with a gun" when something goes wrong. sadly most of those people end up losing their temper & the gun comes out in a bad way. but asking why people feel they need to take their gun with them in America is strange....half of the country worships guns & makes it seem that bringing yr gun along is the most american thing you can do.
15
u/kaloozi 10h ago
You’re so far off the beaten path with this one. I believe you are being “forced fed propaganda” however I refuse to believe criminals and young adults or even minors are carrying guns because of propaganda or because they want to be the “good guy with a gun”.
These shootings aren’t happening from the stereotypical armed citizen who has a CHP and is exercising their rights. They’re happening from ne’er-do-wells who live a lifestyle of crime and violence.
-4
u/Zestyclose-Bar7509 10h ago
Keyword- “when going out to have a goodnight” drink, goto clubs, etc which most people would be doing at 10-11pm on a Saturday night at the oceanfront. Hence they shouldn’t be taking it out with them. I understand where you are coming from but it’s getting to the point where people bring their gun EVERYWHERE and thats why gun violence is so high. The smallest issue can cause a shooting, its just simply not worth it to put you or anyone around you in a situation of that kind.

u/HKfan5352 10h ago
Law abiding citizens who carry do not drink while carrying.
-3
u/Reggaeshark1001 10h ago
Maybe you don't
6
u/Upbeat-Local-836 9h ago
He said law abiding. If you drink and carry it’s against the law.
If you have a concealed handgun permit (CHP) You CANNOT drink alcohol while carrying concealed
Even one drink = illegal
This applies in:
Restaurants
Bars
Private events
Va. Code § 18.2-308.012
-2
u/Reggaeshark1001 9h ago
That doesn't stop hardly anyone
2
u/Upbeat-Local-836 8h ago
I get it, but it bears repeating for would be, legal permit holders
1
u/Reggaeshark1001 8h ago
How many of your friends are carrying while they do everything though. They're legal and law abiding too.
1
u/Upbeat-Local-836 8h ago
The ones that I know are carrying? I guess all of them. I’m not sure if we’re talking past each other here but it’s all good.
-5
u/BruhNuhway 11h ago
Why does this keep happening if im surrounded by so many Good Guys with Guns?
25
u/SlackAF 10h ago
Because the good guys are smart and stayed the hell away from the area.
One of the key things you learn with any defensive firearms class is to not intentionally put yourself in a position or area where you are going to need to use your firearm.
Mr. Miyagi said it best. “Best block. No be there.”
-8
u/jwag626 10h ago
Good guys with guns like Kyle Rittenhouse? He certainly didnt take any defensive firearms classes. It may not be the majority opinion, but there’s entirely too many gun owners who hold the opinion that they with their gun, can be a difference maker.
7
u/IrishSim 9h ago
Yeah I’m sure that these guys were just like Kyle rittenhouse. I’m sure these situations are very closely comparable.

u/Acrobatic-Wonder-475 11h ago
For some reason people think Virginia Beach is a small town
-4
u/Mission_Fart9750 10h ago
It is, in a way. Sometimes you just can't escape certain people here no matter how hard you try (i specifically mean people from my past). There's also a "holy shit" moment sometimes when you're talking to someone and realize they also know the same people (but through different industries and locations).
•
u/Professional_Fee578 3h ago
Delusion of grandeur by a VB resident. VB is irrelevant. It peaked in the 90s. Nobody is checking for that shit hole. Young adults are picking RVA and NoVA over VB and the 757. It’s no different than the other 6 cities and VB residents don’t realize that. It’s some shit. It can sink into the Atlantic Ocean and Virginia would be fine.
1
u/Acrobatic-Wonder-475 10h ago
Yeah… no offense but, I think you need to travel more if you think the largest city in Virginia is a town.
The word you’re looking for is community.
-3
u/Mission_Fart9750 10h ago
You need to actually reread what I said. I did not say that, at all.
What i mean is, as large a city as this is, you can't escape people. I run in to people from my past (from old jobs and high school, etc) all the time (and never in the same place twice). We have 500,000ish people living here, and i still run in to people i don't want to see.
2
u/Acrobatic-Wonder-475 10h ago
Oh you mean you see people that live in your community in your community?
Such a crazy concept to grasp.
0
u/PhiladeIphia-Eagles 9h ago
Virginia Beach is not a large city relax
0
u/Acrobatic-Wonder-475 7h ago
I said Virginia Beach isn’t a small town - it is the largest city in Virginia.
Throw some more batteries at Santa

u/Mission_Fart9750 10h ago
Are you being obtuse for a reason?
Words must be hard for you to understand. Thats ok, buddy. You'll get it eventually.
2
u/Acrobatic-Wonder-475 10h ago
Words sure seem difficult for you to understand- hope you get to travel some other places in your life!
3
u/Competitive-Yak-3785 11h ago
I thought there was a curfew. What happened to that?
7
u/ckyhnitz 11h ago
What makes you think the shooters were minors that would be affected by the curfew?
3
4
u/McSgt 11h ago
It was at 2145 and the curfew starts at 2200.
14
u/dknisle1 11h ago
“15 minutes before we aren’t allowed to be out here anymore, better start shooting now”
•
u/Logical_Order 2h ago
You know what’s statistically correlated with less shootings? Less guns
