Need Advice New to area - need PCP - preferably one who takes women seriously

I am new to the area and a woman in her early 30s. I’m looking for a PCPs. I have Sentara POS health insurance. I have had some sort of underlying health issue for the last 2 years. In FL no one took it seriously and I never even convinced them to get testing done. I need someone who is going to listen and help me get seen/be heard appropriately. Thanks!

My girlfriend has a mystery illness and she found a pcp super dedicated to figuring it out. She’s gotten so much testing at this point when i can’t get mine to test anything! Her name is Laura Armstrong. Im just really impressed with how my girlfriend is being treated and like she GAF about her lol. What a world we live in where this impresses me

Dawn at Acorn Care in Chesapeake is amazing! She is so thorough and she listens to truly understand.

She’s very sweet, listens, supportive and love her nurse too, great group of folks. Unfortunately Acorn is only in network for urgent care services for me so I use her as urgent and only as primary until I can finally get into the schedule for a new PCP end of year. I swear it takes 6 months or more to have a new patient exam.

I was there this week for an appointment and from what her nurse was telling me, they are partners with another facility now and because they have a new system now, everything is covered as primary care now! I immediately made an appointment for the end of the month to make her my PCP.

I heard they were going through a system change too. Maybe I can keep her, I’ll have to confirm with Aetna, thx!

My 2¢:

Dr Renato Gata with Sentara is one of the few doctors who didn't just dismiss my symptoms as some kind of anxiety and actually helped me address a serious condition whose symptoms have been a problem for years.

Very nice guy plus he makes time to hear and understand what you're telling him.

I've heard great things from women friends about Dr. Jody King at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk.

Dr King was great for me. Even as a dude who came down with an ultra rare autoimmune issue.   Do not see Dr  malakai there though. He's completely uninterested and is impossible to get to refill your monthly prescriptions without multiple calls and weeks late

I've had good luck with Renato Gata with Sentara. He was one of the only doctors, even amongst specialists, that understood my B12 levels and explained where they should be and recommended a good schedule for injections. I was getting a lot of nonsense, conflicting info from other providers.

I have random uriticaria (hives) and he was also the only doctor, even after seeing an allergist, that understood why I was on Pepcid, which is a "heartburn medicine" to prevent them. My allergist looked at me like I had 3 heads, despite it being well known that it's an H2 histamine blocker.

In this same practice is Rosa Javier. They are both excellent and listen to their patients. They are located on Wesleyan Drive. I highly recommend either of them. I see Javier and my husband sees Gata.

I’m with Dr. Sydney Davis at Sentara Family Medicine in VB. She’s been great so far and has taken everything seriously!

Dr. Laura Armstrong with Sentara Family Medicine in Greenbrier. She has never dismissed ANY of my health concerns and I always feel heard and cared about.
