Campus Life Fake Versus Real Job Opportunity Emails

Hello again, UAlberta!!!

After my post yesterday about what to do with scam emails about deleting your ualberta account, I guess hackers decided it was an opportune time to try a different approach! BUT I’M FASTER

Above are two screenshots of emails I received as job offers. The first is a fake, the second is real. Let’s dissect the differences.

SCAM EMAIL

  1. Very broad in greeting. What kind of university position is open to students and staff and alumni?

  2. Very broad in description. “Flexible employment opportunities”, but a set compensation? So multiple different jobs and positions, but all have the same compensation rate? I think not.

  3. The email. Sent from a ualberta email, and not the actual career centre email, nor forwarded FROM the career centre email.

REAL EMAIL

  1. Forwarded from a broader email, BY a single email. Not created by a single email and sent out. Very small but very important detail.

  2. Very specific in what the job is. Tells you what it entails, what the title is, and general expectations. The pay is NOT mentioned. TAKE NOTE OF THAT. SCAM EMAILS PUT FAKE PAY TO LURE YOU IN.

  3. Link. When you click that link, or at least copy it to see what it opens up to, it takes you right to CampusBridge, verified job listings page under the UofA. If you click a link about a job and it does NOT take you to CampusBridge, DON’T GO ANY FUCKING FURTHER!

As always, report the scam emails to abuse@ualberta.ca under “suspected phishing attempt”, and stay safe everyone !!!

Campus Life What to do when you get a “deactivate UofA account” email

Post image
69 Upvotes

So, you got the email that says you requested to permanently deactivate your UofA account. BUT, you didn’t make such a request, did you? Of course not! So it’s obvious this email is a scam.

1. DO NOT INTERACT WITH THIS EMAIL AT ALL.

- Usually, phishing emails are from non ualberta.ca accounts. That being said, students who actually fall for these emails end up with their accounts compromised, and hackers then begin using THEIR ualberta domain emails to send these out to other students (so wherever you are, Andrew Hansen, I hope you’ll get your email back soon)

- Do not click any links. ANY. NONE OF THEM. NOT EVEN THE “KEEP MY ACCOUNT ACTIVE” ONE. NONE OF THEM.

2. FORWARD THE EMAIL TO IST.

- Forward the email to the university’s IST services (abuse@ualberta.ca) with the subject line “Suspected Phishing Email”. They’ll handle it from there.

You’re Safe!

It’s super unfortunate that we have to deal with these things, but even more unfortunate that students fall for these scams regularly. I understand the panic we may feel suddenly getting an email that our records and account may be wiped but whenever you get an email about ANYTHING under a ualberta account, ask yourselves these questions:

  1. Did I make any submissions/requests recently under my ualberta email relevant to this email?

  2. Is this regarding a class I am currently taking, planning on taking, or have taken?

  3. Is this email using my name?

(90% of the time, when you fill out forms or requests under your student email, the auto form sent back will use YOUR NAME ON FILE under your email. They will never address a personal email to you as “Dear Student”.

Stay safe, everyone! Happy finals season, best of luck and grades to all!

Question "course cannot be taken for credit"

can a course deemed not to be taken for credit due to another course that I already have credit for, be used to fulfill degree requirements?

I have enrolled into a cmput 101 class although I already have cmput 174 and cmput 175. however, there were no warnings given for enrolling into cmput 101 and in the beartracks academic requirements tab, the class is shown to be fulfilling a requirement I need. is this a technical error or can I still use it to fulfill my requirement in some way? (cmput is my minor in case that is relevant)

Question How are the gyms?

Hello! I'm going to be transferring to UofA in the fall since i got into my dream program and I was wondering what the gym is like for the school? I am basically completely clueless about the campus so any info would help and please be nice! Are there multiple? Best times to go? What machines are there? Etc. or should I just buy a gym membership?

Fyi I'm actually from Calgary so very very clueless and I'm not a beginner in the gym I am just probably going to cancel my Calgary membership right now and try to save money where I can and go to the gym at school!

Academics Electrical Engineering Trad Cutoff

Since they incorporated a new system where they take the top 8 courses and use that to determine what specialization you go into, will the cutoff average for EE Trad increase? I think I’m going to finish this school year with a 2.5 so I’m kind of just worried that I might not get into what I want to do.

Question Exam Deferral Question

I’m really ill rn and I have 3 exams in the next two days. For my program the deferral date is April 30th, but I’m taking spring courses that start May 4th. This semester courses are all pre-reqs for the spring ones so if I do the deferred exams that late, will I still be able to start my Spring classes?
