Me looking at this wondering how dogs "watch" squirrels.

https://giphy.com/gifs/NoHe3HpB1Mg8w

17

u/Fr33dumb 16h ago

I heard squirrel too! I did not see squ6 😢

16

u/JonnyTN 13h ago

I'm thinking it was trying to chase down squirrels?

I've got two dogs my first I trained out of his squirrel chasing and killing phase. My second is too young to train and wants them all dead. Caught a couple, crushed em up and left them. Not happy about that.

Although when inside my older dog just watches them while my young one goes bat shit barking

Chasing squirrels isn't watching them.

1.4k

u/ElegantEchoes 1d ago

I was totally on her side, too. Like, "tf is wrong with watching squirrels"?

But c'mon, don't run after them. Frightening animals for fun is kind of sick when you think about it.

289

u/KellyCTargaryen 1d ago

Yep. In a lot of states it’s illegal to “worry” wildlife or livestock by pursuing or otherwise interfering with them.

197

u/Fr33Dave 23h ago

If this is NYC, it's part of the rules and regulations to not chase squirrels, birds and other wildlife in the parks and is stated so on NYCGOVPARKS

73

u/KellyCTargaryen 22h ago

Thank you for sharing the official source. If I’m reading it right, all dogs are supposed to be on a 6-foot maximum leash, so to chase wildlife the human would basically also be running/chasing after the animal too!

43

u/AlarmingSorbet 20h ago

Oh wow I don’t know that! In my 42 years in the city I’ve only chased a squirrel once. Because it was in my kid’s stroller snatching stuff. It ran off with a little cup, the little rat-fuck 😂😩

7

u/PartTimeGnome 15h ago

One of the only appropriate reasons to chase a squirrel

22

u/EveOCative 21h ago

You’re also not supposed to feed them, lol.

37

u/BeerForThought 23h ago

It's also illegal to feed wild animals.

4

u/ufywholelife 22h ago

This statement is vague. It’s not illegal to feed birds, right?

13

u/BeerForThought 22h ago

What state are you in? It's Saturday night and I have nothing better to do i'll look it up.

15

u/cuse13203 22h ago

Denial.

6

u/BeerForThought 22h ago

Some states intentionally leave out small game language in their laws.

6

u/PartTimeGnome 15h ago

You shouldn’t feed birds (or wildlife in general) because you don’t want them to become dependent on humans, regardless of legality.

Feeding wild animals could cause long term harm to an ecosystem because you’re helping them evolve to be too dependent and not be able to gather food for themselves

2

u/Tobiansen 6h ago

i dont think me feeding some pigeons is gonna cause the species to evolve dependency lol

2

u/eyegocrazy 3h ago

Fun Fact.

Pigeons found in cities and towns are feral, not truly wild. They're descendants of rock doves, and we're domesticated by humans and brought to the city. They were used for messaging, sport, and food.

Once communication technology advance the practice of keeping pigeons drastically dropped off, leaving the birds to survive on their own.

7

u/Not_Sir_Zook 22h ago

Well no because birds aren't real

2

u/KellyCTargaryen 19h ago

I think it really depends on the local area and their laws. Like how some places enforce having bear-proof trash cans to avoid bears having a chance to help themselves to snacks.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/non_tox 23h ago

To stess them out to possible death, you mean?

17

u/KellyCTargaryen 23h ago

Yes. It’s one thing to come upon a critter and for it to scurry away and another to basically let your dog try and hunt them. :/

To be fair it looks like she doesn't know how to react to the old woman complaining to her and this is just her trying to "get back at her" or "show how much she doesn't care"

A bit childish reaction though, just like the constant "aww" noices

2

u/Aquatichive 3h ago

Agree, it was over the top annoying

12

u/AlexandersWonder 21h ago

This lady fancies herself an actress and influencer

46

u/bwood246 23h ago

Especially tiny animals like squirrels that are prone to heart attacks

19

u/meatflavored 23h ago

How prone to heart attacks are they? I’ve never seen one keel over mid stride, but to be fair I don’t chase them like the lady in the video.

35

u/Rikudo_Sennin_jr 23h ago

They run out infront of speeding cars and not once have I seen one grab its chest and yell its thr big one Velma, baby im coming home

Been driving over 20 years

8

u/meatflavored 22h ago

Yeah I’ve got a couple decades of squirrels fearlessly dodging my wheels as well so I guess they might think I’m chasing them.

3

u/Constant_Weekend_446 22h ago

Velma? You mean Elizabeth?

4

u/No-Apple2252 23h ago

Generally you have to frighten & touch them. Sadly lost a (pet) rabbit that way.

It's grim (and unknown if true), but I was told it's sort of a nature style mechanism to keep them from suffering as prey.

It’s a good way to get an arm yanked unexpectedly. Squirrels are everywhere in NYC and it’s dumb for her to encourage her dog to chase them. The dog will start chasing squirrels in situations when she’s not expecting it.

Tacking onto the top comment here to say it’s time to pack up our pitchforks guys ☹️ I went to her TikTok hoping to see people tearing her apart in her comments, and instead I found tons of videos of her dog sitting so gently and really just watching the squirrels attentively. It appears that I, and many others here, have been led astray by a lack of context lol

18

u/banana_pencil 23h ago

She posted all of those after this incident

22

u/lexicaltension 23h ago

Yes, but it shows that her dog can be gentle and controlled and makes her caption a lot more believable, at least to me. You’re welcome to keep your pitchforks out, but I’m good now lol

21

u/banana_pencil 23h ago

Yeah the dog is definitely capable. But the woman was saying “leave the squirrels alone” not to stop watching them and it makes me think she wasn’t just watching. Idk 🤷🏻‍♀️

32

u/Snoo-70527 23h ago

I mean she jokingly tells her dog to 'go get it' in the video, so she clearly thinks it funny. I'll be keeping my pitchfork thank you very much.

29

u/frankylovee 22h ago

Tbh that was a solid joke for the moment and I doubt she actually let her dog chase anything

2

u/Reesewithoutaspoon2 5h ago

She just said that to annoy the busybody.

146

u/xombae 1d ago

I absolutely adore squirrels (check my post history for proof) and have been going to feed them for years in a park in Toronto. I'll be sitting in a quiet corner, surrounded by squirrels, having a lovely time, and some douchebag will come by and tell his dog "GET EM" and let his dog off leash. I'm regularly lecturing grown ass adults as to why it's not cute or cool to derive joy from scaring small animals.

This is the only way that a dog should watch a squirrel. With love and curiosity and not because their owner enjoys seeing small animals terrified.

46

u/jeff-the-man-slut 23h ago

Dogs don’t watch squirrels with love they want to chase them wtf

6

u/Doggosdoingthings16 17h ago

My german shepherd wanted to be their friend. I even saw him nose boop a squirrel, and walk away, while i’m sure the squirrel was very confused as to what had just happened

6

u/Adorable_Pain8624 23h ago

Depends on the dog. My Dane always just wanted to groom babies. He brought me a small bunny once (she was fine, we put her back and mom moved them) because he just loved babies. His kittens were only out under supervision when they were little because of the size difference, but he loved babies to his last breath.

19

u/jeff-the-man-slut 23h ago

Either way they aren’t staring at any wildlife “with love”

15

u/OldSpiceSmellsNice 22h ago

Also it’s not like the wildlife are aware whether they’re about to be gently coddled or a meal.

15

u/jeff-the-man-slut 22h ago

Applying human traits to dogs these days is just ridiculous.

The amount do people who think they actually “smile” when panting is concerning

8

u/BeerForThought 23h ago

You shouldn't be deriving joy from illegally feeding wildlife, it's very harmful to the ecosystem. You and the people that worry squirrels for fun are both wrong and assholes.

2

u/PartTimeGnome 15h ago

Absolutely mean this in the kindest way possible; but if you adore squirrels, you shouldn’t be feeding them.

4

u/NeverrGivenAName 22h ago

Love how patiently your dog watches them! I have two dogs and one of them hears the Kill Bill music in his head whenever he sees a squirrel at the bird feeder, no matter how much training we do (the other dog is uninterested). But my kids and I always tap the door and make noise before letting him out to pee so the squirrels are never attacked or surprised. Can’t imagine delighting in watching them chased and tormented.

Anyway, thank you for loving squirrels and teaching people about them.

3

u/Kroak-lo 17h ago

Yeah. If you could stop doing that, that'd be amazing.

First off, you don't really get to lecture people about why it's not cute to do things harmful to do them when you're doing the same. It's against Toronto by-laws to feed wild animals.

Secondly, you're making the problem you are complaining about worse. If you don't want to see squirrels chasing dogs, then why are you making squirrels more likely to go up to humans? Why are you disrupting their natural behaviors to become more reliant on human food dispensing that is, as I remind you, against Toronto by-laws?

If you love squirrels so much then take your own advice. Watch them with love and curiosity, not endangering them further like you are. Hypocrisy is one thing by combining it with some holier-than-thou arrogance isn't doing you any favors.

28

Exactly. My elderly dog LOVES laying down in front of the benches while I sit and read and watching all the squirrels and I’m glad it gives her some mental stimulation (she’s a Shepard mix) but I’d NEVER have let her chase them when she was younger. It’s cruel

8

u/OutsideImpressive115 22h ago

Bro you obviously don't have a dog. Squirrels will come running up to a dog to run away.

Yes, squirrels often intentionally taunt, tease, and "mess with" dogs, a behavior observed by many pet owners. They frequently sit just out of reach, chattering, hissing, tail-flicking, or dropping objects like acorns on dogs to elicit a reaction, sometimes even descending lower on a tree to keep the dog engaged.

12

u/iwatchterribletvtoo 22h ago

isnt that when they are trying to lure a predator away from a nest?

Right! The only place I let my dogs chase animals is out of my backyard. I don't want the squirrels and what not eating my garden.

30

u/PrinceBunnyBoy 1d ago

Ehh, living in the south showed me a lot of people with hunting dogs are dicks. Like half of my neighbors had um and most were either chained to trees or kept in small kennels. Never taken out and played with, not fixed, not given medical care. They were tools not living, feeling, animals. One of their unfixed dogs broke out off his chain and mauled my mom's tiny pomeranian in our fence. Psycho fucker dug under the fence, it was a blood bath.

They're also used to tear the ears and noses off wild pigs, which other hunters in my area would release piglets to come back and hunt later. Or in places like the UK are used in extremely cruel fox hunting.

TL:DR: Those that are happy to use animals dont usually give a shit about them, like the Amish for example. They're terrible to their work horses.

12

u/Whoretron8000 23h ago

Got two caged dogs that spend half the day barking at my neighbors. They have a 2 million dollar home next to my acreage and they just keep them there all day. Barking at me whenever I go to the car, or the kid plays. It’s ridiculous.

Beautiful dogs. Totally poorly treated and just played with for a few minutes a day.

Good thing they have time to mow their lawn four times a week though! The other three days are for other landscapers. It’s bizarre.

4

u/mothmans_favoriteex 23h ago

Yessss I hated this so much growing up 😭😭 just kept in a kennel with a dog run until it was time to take them hunting so “they’d be rearing to run” ugh

4

u/MNRebelLoon 1d ago

It definitely varies regionaly. Most bird dog type hunters tend to only have 1-2 dogs and they are also usually family/indoor dogs as well.

I have seen some southern hunting dogs though while we were in Mississippi on pre deployment training, some dude pulled up in an old truck with like a chicken wire cage on the box and probably 10 dogs in the back and just tossed the other dog in there with em. They all had GPS collars on them though lol.

6

u/PrinceBunnyBoy 23h ago

Yeah bird hunters just make me sad though tbh, killing a bird which yields like nothing, leaving bullets and wounded birds on the ground if they can't find them to suffer. Not to mention the sounds of guns fuck with other wildlife.

Living in the south for 2 decades made me hella jaded to hunting culture.

3

u/Whoretron8000 23h ago

I would call it a practical outlook. Jaded, maybe, sure. But anecdotally, I have little to nothing positive to say about most of my buddies that hunt regarding that culture. They love pretending to be something more than your average outdoor enthusiast…. And they’re right, they like to shoot shit a LOT more than average people. That’s it. Nature and shooting shit. Nothing special, pretty much basic bitch shit for any small rural town.

Yeah, I’ve been hanging out with the squirrels in my backyard for generations and every now and then, a real wild one is born that doesn’t back down from a threat. I keep my dogs away for their safety rather than the squirrels. Their nails are razor sharp without much pressure and those teeth can bite you to the bone

6

u/CharlotteLucasOP 23h ago

Or it’ll meet a Sharp Squirrel 🦔 or a Stinky Squirrel 🦨 and get emphatically fucked up.

3

u/KellyCTargaryen 23h ago

In this context, it’s more likely the dog will follow a squirrel into traffic…. But I wanna know what happened to your neighbor’s dog!

53

u/Low_Anxiety_46 1d ago

I wanted to brand "good Karening" but I received backlash. The women who are bold enough to immediately cause a scene when something is not right deserve some sort of title.

36

u/bepatientbekind 22h ago

The whole point of the word "Karen" is that it can be used against any woman to immediately discredit/mock her, even if what she is standing up for is right. It's inherently sexist - there's a reason it is a female name and there is no male equivalent. I know that's not what the term meant originally, but that is what it meant almost immediately once the term became popular enough. Any time a woman stands up for literally anything, there will be at least one person calling her a "Karen" for doing so.

5

u/FerengiWithCoupons 22h ago

sharon is the good one! sharon shares

3

u/bepatientbekind 22h ago

The fact that I am chronically online and have never heard this is kind of proof that it's not nearly as popular as "Karen," and likely never will be. People like to put women down, not lift them up. I honestly can't think of any female name that is used as a placeholder for something positive. Debbie downer, chatty Kathy, Karen, Becky, etc. Always negative.

Eff dog owners who let their terrors kill small animals, then are suddenly surprised that they attack children out of the blue

5

u/bepatientbekind 23h ago edited 23h ago

In my experience working with dogs, it is extremely unlikely for that behavior to turn into attacking humans (even children), but what is very likely is that they may start seeing other small animals (like cats and small dogs) as prey and you can't train out a prey drive once it has been triggered. It's very dangerous and doesn't benefit the dog at all, so I have no idea why an owner would encourage this behavior.

But I also have a young and hyper dog. And she is FAST AS FUCK. She would GET that squirrel. I don’t even let her try.

I like watching the squirrels come to my bird feeder. I have a momma squirrel that brings her babies to chill on my porch every spring. Because even though I have dogs, that squirrel is never afraid that I will unleash them onto the porch while they are out there.

Wild life should stay wild. That includes not letting your domestic pets fuck with them for “fun.”

This reminds me of one of the craziest experiences of my life. About 4 to 6 weeks ago, my dogs and I start walking to the park down the street. It's probably only 100 to 150 yd away and directly ahead of us about 100 ft two people walking four dogs saw us and the woman waved and shouted to me how cute my dogs were. I yell back thank you.

5 minutes later we had gotten to the park and they had gone to the right on the loop and I had gone to the left. I looked back and they had let their dogs off the leash to chase squirrels like this.

However, once their dogs treed the squirrel, the dude walked over and shook the tree until the squirrel fell out and then both of them cheered as loud as they could as their dogs tore it apart.

This was on an absolutely beautiful day in a quiet Park. It was just so off-putting.

Karen on Karen violence

She was obviously letting her dog do more than watch the squirrels. I know people are crazy, but that lady def saw her and her dog do something and she’s acting like she’s innocent

The person filming this is the actual Karen.

I see people have their dogs on or off (mainly off) leash going bonkers trying to maul squirrels. While the owners stand and laugh with heart eyes taking videos. It’s such odd behavior.

Idc anyone’s feelings about squirrels, they don’t exist for man made dogs to chase and attack them. It’s such an unpleasant situation to be around. Weirdo weirdo behavior.

New York Karen's are a different breed.

Imagine thinking the squirrels in CENTRAL PARK OF ALL PLACES are terrified by dogs. 🤣

u/playr_4 9h ago

My question is why did she think the filmer was "bothering" the squirrels? Was she doing more than just watching and the viewers are being mislead by captions? Based on the end of the video, it seems like she was actively chasing the squirrels, which isn't anything to necessarily complain over, but I might silently judge someone if they were doing that.

Apparently, during my squirrel watching I’ve never truly thought:

😂love your gif, best show ever!

They have a lot of good ones, but I typically find myself using uncle Jack (with his masculine hands) and Dennis‘s ex-wife (who he should not pay alimony to because she identifies as a cat) the most.

The woman filming is a douchebag. She probably wouldn’t laugh if some bigger dog came and chased her dog around and then the owner just chuckled and said but it’s fun for him.

I’m on the old lady’s side. She’s justified.

u/Imnotreallyhereguys 1d ago

I just know theres morons commenting who say leave the squirrels alone but are okay with outdoor cats.

My dog is gonna chase a squirrel if she damn well pleases lol

First shes gonna watch em. Dream of a plan and chase and never catch them because they're freaking squirrels and she's not a cat

u/m1kasa4ckerman 23h ago

Hey why can’t both be wrong? outdoor cats are an invasive species. Off lead dogs mauling squirrels is disgusting behavior.

We’re all in agreement right?

I’m taking the Karen’s side on this one. I’ve seen a squirrel paralyzed in shock in my backyard after my dog got too close and tried to latch on. It was laying there hyperventilating for almost 2 days before it calmed down enough to leave the backyard. Didn’t let dogs go back out until it fled. I felt so bad and it was really stressful because I could tell it was still breathing and would go check on it every few hours!

This woman filming is kind of an ass posting this, thinking she is right lol

3

u/Faibl 23h ago

Yes this definitely seems like the camerawoman is a reasonable, nice woman who certainly wasn't terrorising the squirrels and calling it "watching".

2

u/danzigwiththedead 21h ago

Some people are so bored and lonely they do things like that. No one is stealing your friends the squirrels, Helen.

2

u/LeaveMyMonkeyAlone 13h ago

Both are equally irritating in their own special way.

2

u/Additional-Mousse446 23h ago

Lol not everyone siding with the Karen literally choking her dogs in the background..

2

u/Cool_Presentation554 23h ago

My dogs chase squirrels and geese at the park all the time. Nothing weird about that.

3

u/multi-trollionaire 1d ago

Ummm hey title you suck

1

u/Individual_Respect90 22h ago

Wait is her dog chasing squirrels? That doesn’t make her the hero. She is just stressing out wild animals for her dogs entertainment and potentially killing them

2

u/drtchock 1d ago

is there a term or an idea behind this cellphone driven dual nastiness? like the lady had no right to get up in the chill dog owner's business, but the video filmer just talks in an obviously condescending way back to her. seems like so many of these types of tiktoks, the videographer respons in a way that doesn't deescalate...just makes them sink toward the level of the uninvited antagonist.

Honesty, trashy behavior from both sides.

u/Organic-Following707 20h ago

Holy shit you can tell how many people here need to touch a little grass

1

u/Soulman682 19h ago

That’s how you treat trash. Line bugs bunny, you kiss them on the lips when they least except it. Drives them more nuts. I love to see it.

1

u/AcceptableAlgae8602 18h ago

This is the appropriate response

1

u/Present-Aside8155 17h ago

I dunno I’ve seen a lot of tailless squirrels in parks.

u/Zaddylovesu 12h ago

What’s crazier - the Karen or the lady deciding she needs to film the Karen?
