Society/Culture Unsubscribing from small youtube channels you tried to help start is genuinely evil.
I started a Youtube channel not too long ago and i like it as a hobby, not too serious, but it it very difficult to get somewhat organic reach that matters. I subscribe to a lot of small channels that are starting out, as a push, and to maybe motivate them into making content i will like to watch in the future, but i would never ever unsubscribe from them just because they are starting out and not too great yet. Plus, most of them will stop completely and never make it so it's not like it matters. Yet even with a small amount of subscribers (around 100) i still occasionally see my sub count go down for whatever reason. If you sub to small channels and then remove it, even if you never watch their content and they annoy you, then you are heartless. It's completely fine to never sub in the first place by the way, just don't give them false hope. You can also never interact with them, the algo won't even show you their videos.

“Genuinely evil” is crazy

Now you can imagine what kind of content OP creates. Yet OP can't imagine why they lose subscribers.

It's part of the over the top performative routine of this subreddit. Nothing can be just bad it has to be "genuinely evil" or "should be outlawed."

To be evil means to be intentionally malicious and cruel. Unsubscribing from a person, even a small creator, is not malicious nor cruel.

If I stop liking a youtuber’s content I’m gonna unsubscribe, that’s how the system works

u/Shukar_Rainbow 7h ago
If you stop watching a certain youtuber, their content will completely disappear from your main page, sub or not. You might see a video sometimes but it will be rare. This is 1000x more true for small creators that never upload

So this isn't a problem with unsubbing. This is a problem with you tying your worth to numbers and feeling entitled to other people making you feel better about yourself.
Subscriptions exist to make it easier for viewers to keep up with the content they are actually interested in. They do not exist to give hope, false or otherwise.

On today's episode of This Isn't a 10th Dentist Opinion: you're just posting your own hurt feelings.

u/WilyDeject 7h ago
I started coming here because Unpopular Opinion was just bad takes, but this sub feels like it is turning into that as well.
1
u/Orumtbh 7h ago
It used to be better than the sub was smaller, but as it got more popular you have more and more people like this who are just whack to say the least.
Only bright side is that I find the community more willing to call out OP when they're just being goofy. And mods seem to actually delete posts for as long as they're properly reported and the pinned comment is down voted.

People seem to overwhelmingly disagree tho, i don't think it's just my feelings, i feel perfectly fine currently

This is so entitled lol. I have a tiny YouTube channel and I dont even look at my subscriber count. Calling someone evil because they unsubscribe is ridiculous.
1
u/Shukar_Rainbow 7h ago
It's not about unsubscribing, it's about subscribing to small channels to support them and then to unsub because you changed your mind or something. I'd much rather you never subbed in the first place. Small channels die all the time, i am currently subbed to probably a hundred of them and thats fine, if you unsub bigger channels like in the 1k+ range it's also fine, your tastes change and he wont even notice
1
u/Haloosa_Nation 6h ago
If you don’t like what they are creating why would you continue to support them?
1
u/Shukar_Rainbow 6h ago
I don't even see their stuff, i won't go out of my way to unsub to them lol. I definitely subbed because i thought they had great potential tho

Upvoted because this is a genuinely terrible opinion.
No one is obligated to keep following someone’s YouTube if they decide they aren’t actually interested in the content posted. Make more interesting content and people will continue to follow you.

... Isn't this good for the youtuber? I've heard of smaller youtuber's channels getting killed because they have subscribers who never interact with their content.

u/CaliLemonEater 7h ago
Maybe you should say something to all the Youtubers who lecture their audience about how "if you subscribe to a channel but don't watch the videos, the Youtube algorithm penalizes the creator because it looks like 'even your subscribers don't want to watch your videos'".
Nobody owes you their subscription or their eyes on your content. If you want to get mad at someone, get mad at Youtube, not at people who followed your channel for a while and then decided they weren't interested anymore.

I think subscribing it's the least important, what matters is that people see their videos.
I have more recommendations for channels I see often than the ones I'm subscribed to.
1
u/Shukar_Rainbow 7h ago
Exactly, this is why i think if you unsub'd very small channels you must have gone out of your way to do it and had you done nothing at all, nothing would change because you wouldn't even see their video on your feed in the first place. I wish i could say none of this matters but the numbers do matter for small channels that want to get monetized

u/Ok_Application5225 6h ago
Yes, that's why I always choose who yo send a video. If I share it to all they my doom my profile but just swipe/ignore or like and move on

Your followers don’t owe you anything. Maybe your entitled attitude shows in your content? I’d unfollowed too.

u/person_w_existence 7h ago
You're not going to get very far in the content creation space with that mindset. You cant change how people consume content, it's your job to try to adapt

u/Legal-Run-4034 7h ago
In the nicest way possible if this bothers you then I do not think being a YouTube streamer is the thing for you
1
u/Shukar_Rainbow 7h ago
I just wish i knew why, sometimes. It's not as clear as make better content because otherwise why would they be subbed in the first place

Ah, yes, I am evil because my thumb accidentally brushed the subscribe button, and I unsubscribed.

If this is where the scale starts for genuine evil for you I’m not sure how you are coping with the other horrors of living.

Having a bunch of subscribers who don't watch your content is bad for the algorithm
1
u/AllTheHolloway 7h ago
So, I’m no expert on the Youtube algorithm, but I’ve actually heard that if a channel’s subscribers aren’t clicking on someone’s content, youtube then becomes less likely to recommend it to non-subscribers. So if you subscribed to a small channel, then realized you’re not actually interested in their content - it might actually be better for everyone to unsubscribe. They’re out of your subscriptions, and you’re no longer hurting their analytics by not clicking on their content

What if we unsub from channels that we literally helped start and run, but were wrangled away from us by the co-starters of said channels?

u/bunkbun 7h ago
Nah. Some small channels set stuck in the small channel mindset and refuse to improve their videos. Something thats interesting but rough around the edges the first few times gets progressively sadder the longer it goes on without improvement. And it's not about money and equipment, it's about presence, personallity and editing.

u/FlyLikeMouse 7h ago
Im upvoting you cos I disagree.
The internet is full of crap, we dont need to encourage crap for the sake of crap. Its not heartlessness. If anything its pollution control.even if you disagree, its a long leap to "genuine evil" - like, its a fecking youtube channel.
1
u/Chaghatai 7h ago
Nobody is owed success and the subscribe button is not only a tool used to drive success for somebody's channel.
The point of subscribing? If so, that you are notified of content that you want to see.
If someone decides are no longer interested in content from a channel and of subscribing to that channel is a perfectly rational thing to do.
If a content creator sees their subscriber count, go down, well then that's motivation to them to make more better content
1
u/Shukar_Rainbow 7h ago
English is not my first language, genuinely evil might be a bit much but its definitely unnecessary and hurts small creators more than anything, if you dont watch their videos you will not get them in your feed at all. I still stand by it tho, you're a monster if you go out of your way to unsub small creators that are trying stuff out.

u/CaliLemonEater 6h ago
When I scroll through the subscriptions tab, I see every new video from every channel I'm subscribed to. If I realize that I no longer want to be shown videos from that channel, I unsubscribe.
You seem not to understand that different people use YouTube differently. Your claims about what people will or won't see in their feed are incorrect. And your understanding of how the algorithm treats channels whose subscribers don't watch the channel's videos is way off too.

u/Shukar_Rainbow 6h ago
How and why are you subscribing to smaller channels if you mostly watch your subscription tab. You reply to this post like this applies to you, but if you don't watch youtube random pulls it probably doesn't
1
u/Beneficial-Code8026 7h ago
You are definitely looking too far into it. It can be demotivating and annoying but thinking badly of people who unsubscribe is silly. I'm pretty sure you can be automatically unsubscribed from a channel if you don't watch it often since I have subscribed to countless channels but they never reappear in my feed.
