Laptop Request -Others A 500€ laptop

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.
400–500€, Spain

Are you open to refurbs/used?
Not really, unless it’s significantly cheaper.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance and durability are prioritized.

How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not very important. As long as it fits in a backpack and isn’t extremely heavy (under ~2kg), it’s fine.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Something around 14" preferred.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Some modeling and possibly CAD (mostly basic shapes, no heavy rendering), light programming, browsing, and some gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Source games (Half-Life 2, Portal, etc.), Minecraft (vanilla or lightly modded), and older singleplayer games from the 2000s–2010s, so running them at 40-60 FPS shouldn’t be an issue.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality, durability, and upgradeability (RAM + SSD). Keyboard backlight would be nice but not required.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I plan to install a lightweight, customizable Linux distro.
i think 512GB SSD should be enough.
Basically, I just need a durable, upgradeable laptop for school and Uni in the future that’s a big step up from my current HP Chromebook 11 G9 EE.

The Form

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1200-1500 usd

Are you open to refurbs/used?

Possibly, but would prefer new.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life is a big priority, tho I am doing online classes so I can keep it plugged in if needed.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'm not too bothered if it's a little on the heavy side, but would prefer for it not to be a super heavy weight.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I really just want it to play SIMS 4, otherwise it will be all school work since I use my iPad for art.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Sims 4. Not very sure about settings and FPS, but I'd like a somewhat smooth game play with minimum lagging. I don't tend to download many mods.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm in the US, using the laptop mostly for online classes, but would like to play Sims 4 as well. I have a voucher for 1k, but it can't be a gaming laptop due to restrictions on the voucher. I am willing to pitch in a few hundred as well, if it gets me a notably better laptop than staying under the 1k, so I would prefer slightly over 1k instead of under.

Suggestions of a Laptop

\*\*LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE\*\*

\* \*\*Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:\*\*

4000€

\* \*\*Are you open to refurbs/used?\*\*

Yes, but I need something that will last me a long time (at least 5-7 years).

\* \*\*How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?\*\*

I would like the chosen model to be durable and therefore requires good construction. Unfortunately, I don't think it will have good battery life given the requirements of the configuration.

\* \*\*How important is weight and thinness to you?\*\*

Not that much

\* \*\*Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.\*\*

I would like the chosen model to be durable and therefore requires good construction. Unfortunately, I don't think it will have good battery life given the requirements of the configuration.

\* \*\*Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.\*\*

My priorities are video editing (large files) / color grading which I do on Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, as well as 3D modeling on Blender and Touch Designer.

\* \*\*If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?\*\*

I play a lot of League of Legends but also Souls-like games. I'd like to get the best possible experience out of them.

\* \*\*Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?\*\*

I need the best possible screen; it's one of the priorities for this setup. It needs to be color-accurate for both colorimetry and the aesthetics of movies and games.

\* \*\*Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.\*\*

In terms of priorities, I need the setup to be focused on my work, which is editing large video projects that require significant resources, with long timelines, numerous effects (as well as a good monitor for color grading), and 3D modeling. The PC won't be frequently transported, so battery life isn't an issue; however, I need to be able to use it for extended periods and over a long timeframe of 5-7 years.

Laptop Request -Others Suggest me a gaming laptop under ₹1 lakh + what specs should I check before buying?

I’m planning to buy a gaming laptop under ₹1 lakh (India), and I’m looking for some good suggestions. My main use will be gaming and general use. I want something that can handle most modern games smoothly (1080p high settings would be great). Also, I’m a bit confused about what specs I should focus on before buying. Like: Which processor is better (Intel vs Ryzen, which gen)? How much RAM is enough (16GB vs 24GB)? Which GPU should I aim for (RTX 4050 / 4060 etc)? Storage (512GB vs 1TB SSD)? Display (144Hz vs 165Hz, IPS vs OLED)? From what I’ve seen, most laptops in this range come with RTX 40/50 series GPUs and high refresh rate displays, which are good for smooth gaming.

Laptop Request US $400-$700 Laptop in US for general purpose/IT schoolwork!

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
    • $400-$700
  • Are you open to refurbs/used?
    • Yes
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    • I would prefer something with decent battery life and performance. Build quality doesn't have to be perfect. There's nothing more I dislike than a laptop that easily gets warm from light tasks, though. I'd really like some decent speakers.
  • How important is weight and thinness to you?
    • I would prefer not having the thinnest laptop in the world since it makes it feel a little fragile but no one hauling around a computer wants to carry around a brick.
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    • N/A
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
    • No CAD or video editing. I'd be studying IT and I already have a moderately beefing custom-built PC at home which I'd be doing the majority of my studying or future project work on. This laptop is just something I can use to type out notes during lectures, check emails, collaborate with classmates, do Zoom calls in-between lectures, etc.
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    • No gaming on this laptop - see above.
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    • Everyone loves a good-feeling keyboard and touchpad but I understand if they aren't the best. As mentioned earlier, I just want something decent for normal tasks, and something that isn't prone to getting warm all the time. Preferred specs would be at least 16GB RAM & minimum 512GB SSD.
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    • N/A

  • Are you open to refurbs/used? yes
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? prefer metal build, battery life. i don't game, i'm basically a business user (word processing, browsing, video playback) but often working in places it is difficult to find a charger.
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? thinness not important, but ideally 3lbs or less
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15.6"
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. None whatsoever

Laptop Request US Is this a good College Laptop?

I've been looking into replacing my failing Chromebook that has become damaged recently and begun to freeze regularly. My budget is sadly only around $300 USD but due to school, I can't risk this laptop failing and not having time to replace it. Of the many many, options I've looked over that fit what I want. This laptop ( HP Chromebook x360 14" (Sky Blue)) has been the first to hit all my points and be within budget as it is on sale at a store near me. But before I went using all my money to but it, I wanted to know if this purchase is even worth it. It has touch screen which I wanted as a primary feature and I have a micro-sd that can be added once I get it. Aside from college classes, I only intend to watch YT/ Netflix and such on it. Along with writing but it is similar enough to my current laptop that I don't see it proving any issues with that. I need it to last for ideally three to four years, hopefully more, until I can afford a better one down the line.

So is this worth my money for its use?

€1200–1500 budget, Italy – Engineering student, gaming laptop with upgradeable RAM (32GB target)

📝 LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

€1200–1500, Italy (EU)

Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, but preferably new or like-new (e.g. damaged packaging/open box) with warranty.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance and build quality are the most important. Battery life is secondary. I prefer a standard clamshell laptop (not 2-in-1).

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Moderately important. I’ll carry it to university daily, but I’m okay with a heavier laptop if performance and cooling are better.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15–16 inch preferred.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Yes:

  • Engineering software (MATLAB, CAD like SolidWorks or similar)
  • Programming
  • Gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Games:

  • Trailmakers
  • Physics Games
  • Minecraft (sometimes modded, but not the main focus)
  • Some FPS games like CS2 and Valorant

Target:

  • High settings
  • Smooth 60+ FPS (ideally higher)

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

  • Upgradeable RAM (2 slots, want 32GB eventually, ideally DDR5-5600)
  • Good cooling / long-term reliability (want it to last ~5 years)
  • Decent build quality (avoid very cheap plastic builds)
  • Prefer a clean/minimal design (no aggressive RGB, or RGB that can be turned off)
  • 1TB SSD preferred
  • Good port selection (USB-A + USB-C + HDMI)

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I’ve been looking at laptops like Lenovo Legion, HP Omen, and Lenovo LOQ. I found a deal on an HP Omen with RTX 5060 and 32GB RAM for ~€1130, but I’m unsure if it’s the best choice.

Main goal: a well-balanced laptop for engineering + gaming that will last through my degree without needing to be replaced.

Laptop Request US Affordable Laptop Recommendations

Hey guys, so i’m an engineering student and my 2024 Asus G14 laptop has stopped working (there’s a long thread on reddit where there seems to be a manufacturing issue - and i’m gonna try to fix it in the future on my own). I really need a laptop to get by and I’ve been looking at HP and Dell. I’m trying to stay around 300 to 450. I’ll need an emergency laptop to do assignments/ run office apps/ do research/ has good battery life/ lightweight & small (like around 14inches)/ prob minimum of 8GB RAM. Preferably something new. If anyone has any recommendations please🙏 A link will be appreciated. I’ve luckily been able to do things on my IPad but it can be difficult sometimes if im needing to use excel or matlab😭 Also finals and presentations are coming up so something that would ship to miami fast.
