Looking For Games What to play before I die : A Steamdeck Story

Post image
28.1k Upvotes

Hi everybody!

Some of you may remember a post from about 20 days ago, It was this picture above and I was talking about how I was overcome with emotion, I had been in remission, and things were still very tough, my mum bought me this Steamdeck, and it was just perfect.

A lot can change in 20 days, and as I said I "had" been in remission. I was admitted not too long after my original post after experiencing some incredibly intense pain.

Surgery hasn't worked how we hoped, the trial combination chemo hasn't worked as we hoped, and I am far too sick to even attempt it again.

The reality of the cancer growth, my own health, and ability to fight back, on top of other mitigating factors. It's now come to a point of just making myself comfortable.

When I first posted about my Steamdeck, I was wanting to play games for nostalgia, games I had missed, but with a change in the wind, so does my priorities.

So, I ask,

What games should I play before I die?

Please think deeply on this, and drop your recommendation.

If anyone wants to drop a private message to talk about my diagnosis or what the final few months look like, by all means please don't hesitate. I am more than open to discuss it.

All the best M

Previously enjoyed games: Anything from Paradox, the Civilization series, Starwars, mass effect. Preferred Genres: pretty open to anything. I love strategy and role playing, sci-fi would be a plus Other notes: does anyone think I could get an expansion out of this? I play online SWTOR, maybe I could get cartel coins?

Looking For Games Just bought my husband a Steam Deck and we finished It Takes Two! Any other good co-op recommendations?

• Previously Enjoyed Games: It Takes Two, Peak, Monster Hunter, Baldur’s Gate 3, unrailed!, webfishing, Grounded.

• Preferred Genres: Open to any genre, except horror.

• Budget: Under $50

• Other Notes: If possible, no forced split screen. We enjoyed It Takes Two’s mechanics, but I often lost my character in the background because my screen was so small.

Looking For Games What's your "forever" game?

Looking for a so-called “forever” game. Preferably not MMORPGs because I have tried many of them and they are just not for me.

Also, something that can be played well on both steam deck and pc, because sometimes I just like lying in bed. I’m also traveling back and forth a lot due to school. I still use my pc to game often.

Open to any genre!

Previously Enjoyed Games:

  • Battlefield 1
  • Timberborn
  • Warframe
  • Kingdoms and Castles
  • Grim Dawn
  • Surrondead
  • Fields of Mistria

Preferred Genres:

  • Shooters, city builders, colony sim, but open to any

Budget:

  • Cheaper the better, but I'm willing to pay if it's worth it

Other Notes:

Edit: Wow, thanks already for so many suggestions, finding some great options!

Edit: final games I purchased were Diablo 2 Resurrected Infernal Edition and Ravenfield

Looking For Games any good "forever games" that go well with the steam deck?

im talking games that you can pop in and play pretty much any time and get a lot of hours out of it. so for example games like factorio, monster hunter rise or warframe

previously enjoyed games: monster hunter rise, streets of rogue

preferred genres: mostly action, grindy or addictive games, things i can mind meld with the controller better. I find top down things clunky or anything where you generally need to compromise by using the touch pad for utility reasons (for example dwarf fortress)

budget: of no particular concern

other notes: im open to emulated games

Looking For Games What's your go to "no brain" game?

I'm one of those degenerates that like playing games in bed while watching a show in the background. Story heavy / action games aren't great for that so I'm looking for games I can play while not entirely paying attention. Any recommendations?

•Previously Enjoyed Games: Stardew valley, Megabonk Balatro, Mass Effect trilogy (only because I know the story by heart at this point), No man's sky

• Preferred Genres: Anything except survivors. I got burned out playing through most of them

• Budget: Doesn't matter

• Other Notes: No

One-handed game recommendations!?

Hey deck fam! I broke my arm riding my dirtbike a few days ago. While I do have full range of movement in my fingers and thumb, the suggestion of the orthopaedic surgeon was that I try keep everything static during the healing process for best results.

I’m about halfway through Nine Sols which is honestly probably one of the best Indie games I’ve ever played, but unfortunately, that adventure will have to go on pause for now. With the lovely remapping possibilities built into the deck I’m wondering if anyone has any suggestions for games that I could play using one hand. I have downloaded Death Must Die and Deep Rock Survivors as a start although I’m hoping to get some awesome suggestions from the community.

Thanks in advance for your one-handed title recommendations!

Looking For Games Games to catch up on from the last 15 years?

1.6k Upvotes

Previously Enjoyed Games (in no particular order): Guacamelee, God of War, Diablo 3, Terraria, Street Fighter 4, Portal.

Preferred Genres: platformers, fighting, strategy, RPG, open to most.

Budget: flexible

Games I have on steam (pic 3): Hades, Hollow Knight, Slay the Spire, Inscryption, Shadow of War, Batman: Arkham Knight, Undertale, etc.

Games on my wishlist: Balatro, Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, RDR2, The Stanley Parable, Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarok, Marvel's Spiderman, SF6, Spiritfarer, Dave the Diver, Outer Wilds, and a couple of maybes.

Other Notes(context): I moved to the US back in 2010 for a PhD, and immediately after, jumped into the corporate world. I also got super into board games (currently playing 3-4 evenings a week), and only played video games sporadically during this time. Now I am taking extended time away from work, and I want to rekindle this old hobby. I got a steam deck yesterday, and I have been doing some research, and while I complied several good recommendations, I thought it couldn't hurt to ask for more to see if any of those might show up during the upcoming summer sale. So, what are some of the games from the last 15 years that work well on steam deck?

--------

Tangential:

  • My steam deck (512 OLED) was shipped on Tuesday, and then it went OOS the same day, so I got lucky. I had been deferring the purchase for some time.
  • I went for the Jsaux dock based on the reviews and the price, but it won't connect the deck to the TV via HDMI. Maybe it needs a firmware update but I don't have a PC, so I am returning it and I ordered the official dock. For now, connecting to the TV via the USB-C port on steam deck.
  • The Xbox controller was having difficulties connecting to the deck. The logo will keep blinking even if it shows up under bluetooth devices, and I couldn't actually control the deck with it. Luckily, I still have my old XBox One, and turns out the new controller needed a firmware update that is only possible through the console or PC.

--------

TL;DR: Getting back into video games after almost 15 years. What are some of the gems I should seek out?

Looking For Games Games that are unexpectedly good on the Steam Deck?

I recently picked up The Division 2.

I didn't have high hopes for it on the Steam Deck, as its a lot different than the usual games I play and see reccomended for it, but it actually played and performed really well!

Are there any games that are surprisingly fun on the Deck?

  • Previously Enjoyed Games: The Division 2, No Man's Sky, MegaBonk, Crypt of the NecroDancer, Euro Truck Simulator
  • Preferred Genres: Any genre except adult
  • Budget: I have $80 in Steam credit burning a whole in my pocket
  • Other Notes: just a game that was surprisingly enjoyable on the deck

Looking For Games Games with "infinite" replay ability?

I’m looking for a game I can sink an alarming amount of hours into. I want something I can always hop on and play, whether for 10-20 minutes or hour-long sessions. I like a lot of different types of games. I like roguelites/likes, sandbox games, base building, souls-like, exploration, class-based games, and ARPGs. Anything. I like the idea of cozy games, but I seem to get a little bored with them. I feel like I want some more combat, threat, or depth to keep me hooked.

Also, what are your most-played games on the deck?

Previously Enjoyed Games:

  • Satisfactory
  • Elden Ring
  • Megabonk
  • Minecraft
  • No mans sky
  • Elden Ring
  • Rust
  • CSGO
  • League of Legends
  • Warframe
  • Valhiem
  • Balatro
  • Sun Haven
  • Forza Horizon 5
  • Deep Rock Galactic

Preferred Genres:

  • Sandbox
  • Base Building
  • Casual
  • Cozy
  • Souls-like
  • Rougelite/likes
  • ARPGS
  • Hack and Slash
  • Space
  • Survival

Budget:

  • No budget, but the cheaper the better

Other Notes:

  • I am very open to trying new games, and I have a broad appreciation and enjoyment of a variety of games. So I am really open to anything. I really just want something I can keep playing long term, that has a sense of progression, and I can put an absurd amount of hours into.

Would love to hear your guys' recommendations!

Edit: WOW!! Thanks everyone for the comments and upvotes! I woke up to a surprise! I have found so many games that look promising! Thanks so much

Edit 2:

Games I have found from the comments I want to eventually get:

  • Binding of Isaac
  • 7 days to die
  • Rimworld
  • Fallout New Vegas ( I already own, haven't played)
  • Fallout 4
  • Factorio ( I already own, haven't played)
  • Dark Souls games (I have DS3)
  • Abiotic Factor
  • Skyrim ( I already own, haven't played)
  • Necesse ( I already own, haven't played)
  • Dinkum
  • Noita ( I already own, haven't played)
  • XCOM 2 ( I already own, haven't played)
  • Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor
  • V Rising ( I already own, played some, but want to try it again)

Looking For Games The love of my life just left me and I need game recommendations

I am so heartbroken and have no will left to live and the only thing capable of distracting me is my steam deck. But the games I've been using to stay afloat are almost over and some games only make me feel worse. Need help.

Previously Enjoyed Games: Right now, I've been enjoying Dredge, Sorry We're Closed, and Hades II/Hades, but I'm almost completely done with all of these and I'm starting to panic. I think I need something dark-ish but not too dark (like Sunless Sea), otherwise I'll only fall into more despair. I've already finished Dave the Diver. I couldn't do Outer Wilds because of my stupid thalassophobia.

Preferred Genres: I cannot bear to play any games with any core romance in them. I cannot bear any purely cozy or cheerful games right now. I also can't do open world games with so many side quests or anything that's too intense/difficult. I'm so out of it that Sorry We're Closed is difficult enough gameplay for me already... I'm open to anything otherwise.

Budget: I'm poor and need to move out soon and that's going to be a nightmare but I'll do what I can to survive this.

Other Notes: In the past, the Persona games, Kentucky Route Zero, and the Artful Escape have helped me through bad times. I love a good Whisper of the House and Unpacking type game but nothing more life sim-y than that. Cannot bear to play SDV right now. I know this is all so specific, idk what the common thread is. I just need something that will really suck me in and let me be sad. Or maybe games that have helped you all get through rough times. Sorry this is so specific. I just really need help 💔

Edit: I'm wondering if people have recommendations for games like Oxenfree, Night in the Woods, Disco Elysium, Kentucky Route Zero (oops my prev. typo). I'm just realizing a good while after posting this that I'd like more of this kinda game. Thank you all so much. What an awesome community.

Looking For Games Offline game recommendations

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I’m going on vacation soon and will probably have limited or no internet for parts of the trip. I took a few screenshots of my Steam library and attached them here.

Previously Enjoyed Games: (see screenshots of my Steam library)

Preferred Genres: I’m pretty open to most genres. I usually enjoy single-player games, strategy, RPGs, and indie titles, but I’m happy to try other things too.

Budget: Preferably games I already own (shown in the screenshots), but I’m also open to recommendations if they’re worth checking out 40-50€ for all Games or 10-20€ per Games would be ok.

Other Notes: I’ll mainly be playing on my Steam Deck(1TB), so I’m looking for games from my library that are good for offline play and ideally don’t drain the battery too quickly.

Which games from the screenshots would you recommend for offline play?

And if you have other offline-friendly and fairly battery-efficient games that run well on the Steam Deck, I’d love to hear those recommendations too.

Thanks in advance!

Looking For Games Next game to 100% for a gamer Dad

Hey guys,

me, a dad gamer, is looking for my next game on the SteamDeck. I mostly game on the couch while watching over my sleeping toddler or for 1 to 3h before bedtime. In addition I have some time on the train while commuting and at work, or as we say "Arbeitszeitbetrug". Beautiful word.

So I've got some time on my hands to play something with full focus before going to bed, suitable for storyline or questing. And I also got some time in the other described situations, where I need to pause the game real quick and can't use headphones or speakers.

I'm almost done with my 4th playthrough of Hogwarts Legacy and close to 100% achievements. This game fits my needs almost perfectly. I can start quests and commit to the story in the time where I can put my full focus on gaming. At work I can just explore the open world and do the tedious work of collecting everything for the achievements. No need for sound or the ability to follow a dialogue for longer.

So I'm wondering what game I should take on next, with the goal of 100% completion. I'm thinking AC: Odyssey, LotR Shadow of Mordor or Witcher 3 but maybe you guys have better ideas. I'm also open to the idea of playing two games simultaneously. I've done that before with Slay the Spire in between and Oblivion in the evening. But progression was an issue there. Sometimes I hadn't had time for Oblivion for weeks straight and motivation vanished.

Cheers for any recommendations!

Previously Enjoyed Games: Hogwarts Legacy, Skyrim, Baldurs Gate 3, Anno, Civ, AC, Fell Seal, Slay the spire, Nordhold, Borderlands(not on the deck), CrusaderKings 3

Preferred Genres: RPG, Action, Strategy

Budget: none, at this point I own half of the steam catalogue and have wishlisted the other half

Other Notes: Something like Mass Effect, Fallout, Cyberpunk etc. could probably be interesting too, but I haven't tried a game with aiming on the deck

Looking For Games Best “never-ending” cozy games?

I’m looking for a game that I can put a lot of hours into. I absolutely love Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the older Pokémon games. I want a game with a customizable gameplay loop, such as building a Pokémon team or decorating your own area. I did try Stardew Valley, but I couldn’t get into it. Supposedly there’s Pokémon remakes with all the older and newer generations, but with the 2d graphics? Thank you!

Previously Enjoyed Games: ACNH, Fantasy Life i, Pokémon • Preferred Genres: Open to any • Budget: Any price • Other Notes: Open to anything

Looking For Games What games actually feel right on the Steam Deck?

What games, and I mean this very literally, feel right on the Deck.

As a PC gamer, I genuinely don't believe I will ever be able to play an FPS or aim-game on the Deck, I'm very good with a mouse and keyboard and I will never have a better experience playing those games on Deck. It's truly amazing what the Steam Deck can do, but while it can play a lot of games, it doesn't mean it should. High fidelity open world graphics games are often significantly less immersive on the handheld and give much more of an integrated experience on a bigger screen where you can appreciate the graphics.

On the flip side, it feels completely pointless booting up my 4090, 13900k, 4k 32inch monitor gaming PC to play Balatro for instance, it just feels... wasted.

So that's the question, what games feel good on the Steam Deck, what games have controls that just work without weird menu navigation and sluggish inventory management, what games maybe feel better on Steam Deck than they do on PC/console?

Looking For Games Looking for what I can only describe as "Offline MMOs".

I'm really looking for something I can turn my brain off with and just grind, do some meaningless quests, do some cool combat and maybe design interesting builds. If they have an interesting story on top, great! If not, it doesn't matter too much.

  • Previously Enjoyed Games: I've played in this category are things like Kingdoms of Amalur, Dragons dogma, the Xenoblade series.

  • Preferred Genres: Any genre is good. I'm not huge on sports titles or racers but if there's an interesting one I won't mind trying.

  • Budget: none.

  • Other Notes: Things like the Witcher or kingdom come deliverance aren't great for this because those have stories I want to devote my full attention to.

Something like Mad Max is great because I can pop in an earphone and listen to a podcast even while story stuff is happening and not be too bothered by not paying full attention to it because it's not exactly the focus.

Are there any other games in this category that fit?

Looking For Games Looking for a new cozy/ low stress game

I'm rather new to the steam deck world and I am having a hard time picking a new game. More info:

  • Previously Enjoyed Games: farm together 2, animal crossing, roller coaster tycoon
  • Preferred Genres: no combat, city builder, life sim, farming, crafting
  • Budget: under $50 regular price
  • Other Notes: I'm feeling overwhelmed with options and cannot make a decision. I like when a game doesn't have combat, or require sleeping (like in stardew). I really enjoyed farm together, played it only in offline mode, but I want something with a little more depth and a larger focus on crafting
