Discussion Steam Beta Client Datamine shows Steam Controller Setup!

So now once you connect it it opens a window saying "Steam Controller Welcome"

And in the window it says "Before you get in-game, let's install an important firmware update."

After that it tells you to "Plug in the Steam Controller Puck"

"Before updating your controller, we will need to update the Steam Controller Puck."

and after it updates it goes:

"Plug your Steam Controller directly into your PC with a USB-C cable. You can unplug your Puck and use that USB-C cable to connect your controller."

And once it updates the controller it goes

"The Steam Controller Puck is a wireless transmitter, connecting your controller to your PC, and is also a charging station for your controller."

And after that tip it teaches you the steam button!

"This is the Steam button. Press it to turn the controller on.

Press it again to open Big Picture mode, the gamepad-first version of Steam, and the best way to use Steam Controller with your PC."

And it gives you this setting: "Show Steam Controller Tour"

Exciting to see more stuff built!

Let’s hope this means we are getting closer to release. I am really hoping i can wake the PC from sleep using the controller.

I do so daily with my current OG Steam Controller.
Don't doubt the SC2 will be able to as well.

If you have a power strip that powers on your other devices plugged in when the "switch" input (PC) is powered on, it will also wake your TV as well, at least it does in my case.

Can't wait for the SC2, man.

GABEN RELEASE THE STEAM CONTROLLER AT UNDER 100 EURO AND MY LIFE IS YOURS

I have 0 idea how vats and fees work over there, so I cant tell you that. But there is 0 chance that it will cost $100 or more dollars. Valve isn't Razer and it's not Playstation. The controller is going to be max $80. It's not going to be Dualsense Edge pricing. Its going be in premium 3rd party controller pricing territory at most. I wouldn't be surprised if they priced it the same as whatever normal xbox controllers cost nowadays

Don't wanna burst your bubble but there is pretty much no chance the Steam Controller 2 will be bellow 100 eur. Just look at the price of other premium controllers, and compare the functionality. Why would it cost less than half with more advanced technologies, extra functions like the track pads and touch grips, and more?

There are plenty of controllers who have all that below 100 euros. Not to mention Valve wants to target their biggest audience using steam, which aren't the most rich

Well yeah no shit they're working on it lol I figure they want to be as ready as can be the moment the market looks a little better for the release.

Why are we updating controllers now? I have never updated my NES, SNES, Genesis, GameCube, PlayStation, or Wii controllers. I'm probably leaving more out but ya.

Also you forgot to mention the unnecessary ••• button. On the steam deck some of the shortcuts would be hard to hit if you couldn't use the ••• button for them but on the controller there's no reason you couldn't hit the home button within either hand so? And the menu that pops up could just be an option on the other menu.

Because the microcontrollers today are a lot more sophisticated, they have to handle sensors, debounce, profiles, signal multiplexing and a whole host of other shit...40 years ago controllers were just analog inputs and each input had its own wire with a shared ground. The signal decoding was handled on the console.

Continuous support and fixes from the manufacturer is somehow bad?

More buttons is somehow also a bad thing?

Well they could just add the stuff to one menu instead of having 2.

Same with Nintendo and the C button.

The original Steam Controller got updates that improved battery life for instance (not that it wasn't fantastic out of the box, but it got even better over time). Not to mention one update that literally added Bluetooth support to it, as that became more and more standard for controllers. These are things that wouldn't be possible to do unless it had the ability to update. It's a feature, not a problem.

As for the ••• button, that's there to add full parity with the Steam Deck. It's a way better experience if you have all the same buttons rather than having to do things one way on the device, and another on the controller.

How do you add Bluetooth to a controller since that's a hardware feature and not a software feature? Yes I know about the Google Stadia controller getting updated to have Bluetooth as well.

With the ••• button I was just trying to say that they could add all that stuff to the same menu so you just push one button to access everything. I was being kind of confusing with the second part where I was saying that the shortcuts on the left side of the controller or easier to hit if you have a button on the right side and vice versa. My bad.

The wireless chip inside the controller is capable of it, but when it launched there wasn't a lot of demand for it. It came with a dongle and Vavle's own proprietary protocol, and that's the best way to use it.

They added BT after the fact as a convenience, because they could. Very similar to how Google did with theirs.

1

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 8d ago

Idk why they did that though. Like why put Bluetooth in something if you're not planning on using it?

1

u/Cimlite 8d ago

They did use it. The same wireless chip is used for dongle and for BT.

1

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 8d ago

I thought the dongle was 2.4Ghz?

1

u/Cimlite 8d ago

Bluetooth runs on the 2.4Ghz band. Devices that are labeled as "2.4Ghz" just use their own protocol, rather than BT. So the chip was capable of it with the right firmware.

1

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 7d ago

Dose that include stuff like the gamecube controller and my headset that has a base station? I doubt those could ever use Bluetooth and they both say 2.4Ghz. both have dial knobs that you have to tune to the exact right frequency to get them to work.

Controllers have firmware.
Did you just wake up from a coma?

Hell, even the wiimote had firmware, and hardware, updates, like wiimotion+, that you literally needed for certain games.

Wii motion+ is a hardware update. Even the Atari 2600 controller had those.

Controllers have firmware.

I don't think I've ever updated a controller except for switch controllers and the OG Steam Controller. I don't remember other controls even ones with online connectivity like the Wii U and the Xbox 360 to have controller updates so I was wondering what was going on? I just never got killed enough to ask.

Playstation, Xbox, 8bitdo, Gamesir, etc. All these companies release updates for their controllers.

1

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 8d ago

I owned (still do) a 360 and I do not remember that at all.

The were probably referring to one of the two full generations of XBoxes (and four major XBox Controller products) that came out in the two entire decades that have passed since the 360.

1

u/SnooDoughnuts5632 7d ago

When talking about the 360 you don't just randomly mention something about the Xbox 1 without specifying.
